The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, We’re excited to bring you this report, summing up another successful year of GlobeMed activities at the University of Chicago. This year marked a big step for us. Together, we determined that our partner, ASPAT had reached a state of relative financial stability, they wanted to expand the reach and scale of their work. We raised enough to fully sustain ASPAT’s core programs and overhead costs ($6,000) in order to allow for a focus on expansion, and will work with ASPAT to fortify the organization’s operational capability and to apply for a wide range of larger-scale grants. We are excited to announce that GlobeMed at the University of Chicago and ASPAT-PERU’s partnership has reached its full graduation potential. The graduation of our partnership will come into effect at the end of this academic year. While it marks the end of our funding and direct team support for ASPAT’s operations, graduation also recognizes the remarkable achievements of the organization’s dedicated team and the power of its people-centered mission. ASPAT is and will continue to be the leader in the fight against tuberculosis and for a better Peru. We look forward to the next phase of our participation in ASPAT’s unyielding advancement towards “a future without tuberculosis.” With this decision comes a new and exciting time for our chapter. Founded in 2007, ASPAT-Peru served people affected by tuberculosis (TB), working to improve both their physical and social well-being. ASPAT’s work is based on the belief that coordinated, multi-sector responses can have the greatest effect against TB. GlobeMed at the University of Chicago has been working to support ASPAT and its mission since 2010. Since then, we have raised over $55,000 in on-campus fundraising campaigns and over $120,000 in grants, awards, and prizes for ASPAT.

Our Partnership ASPAT Peru
Founded in 2007 In 2007, Melecio Mayta Ccota founded ASPAT, the Association of People Affected by Tuberculosis, with the aim of improving the social and physical well-being of people suffering from TB. ASPAT itself is made up entirely of volunteers who have either beaten TB in the past or who are currently fighting the disease. It works alongside Peru’s Ministry of Health to raise the quality of life of affected persons, alleviate social stigmatization, and increase educational and preventative measures throughout the country, particularly in Callao, one of hte poorer districts of Lima. In 2010, ASPAT and GlobeMed at the University of CHicago formed their partnership and have since collaborated on various projects including house-building initiatives, a breakfast program, a biometric data system, and psychosocial counseling sessions.
Callao, Peru Population: 8,000,000 Callao is a port city with areas of concentrated, urban poverty, and gaps in access to health. As in the rest of Peru, there is a great deal of stigma surrounding tuberculosis, which presents a hindrance to seeking treatment, makes it difficult for patients to retain employment, and often results in ostracization by friends and family. ASPAT provides a support system for those affected by TB in Callao, helping them not only to receive proper treatment, but also offering much-needed friendship and encouragement.
Our Project
Desayunos, or “breakfast” in English, is an ASPAT program in the works for many years now. Its intent is to provide breakfast along with nutritional education and psychosocial counseling for people affected by TB to recover. GlobeMed conducted a strategic analysis of the prospective program to understand how ASPAT would not only implement, but grow the program to affect the many lives affected in Peru. Our conclusion was that it would be very difficult for ASPAT to sustain Desayunos, for the latter will require a lot of human and capital resources that may be beyond ASPAT’s current capacity. ASPAT has already implemented the Charlas program, whose objective is also to provide psychosocial support to TB patients in Peru while also providing them food through canastas. Therefore, we believed that ASPAT could optimize their funding, time, and human capital to grow and amplify a proven and effective program rather than take on the risk of a similar but new program. For this reason, our recommended next steps centralized on a merger between Desayaunos and Charlas. Much of this year focused on helping ASPAT develop a plan, if they decide to move forward with this consolidation.

Campaign Highlights Bubble Tea One of the most popular fundraisers on campus, GlobeMed members had ‘tea-making parties’ to be able to deliver the popular Thai drink. Sellouts were common given the demand!
Rummage Sale Appealing to the broke college student, GlobeMed brought the thrifting to campus, allowing people to find new gems out of second-hand clothes.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016 – 2017: 61 Number of community-building events: 6 Chapter building took on a range of activities this year, running the gamut from escape the room adventures where members had to band together to fend of zombies to canvassing local neighborhoods to raise awareness of non-profits and job training opportunities. While this year had the biggest chapter yet seen for GlobeMed at the University of Chicago, community building events helped keep the small, family feel!
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
This year saw GlobeMed at the University of Chicago branch out by stepping outside our usual focus on solely international health. Armed with a new partner in the local community, we began exploring what ‘global health’ really was, and especially if it was something we could find just a few blocks south of campus. This focus on the global-local dynamic was especially poignant given American health care dynamics in the wake of the 2016 election and allowed members to consider where in the world their talents might best be put to use- especially if that place was right next door.

globalhealthU highlights from the year
GALLERY EVENT: PATIENT PERSPECTIVES Integrating work done on GROW with a chapter focus on building empathy and awareness on campus, members of the GROW team showcased the experiences, challenges, and work they felt made our partnership with ASPAT impactful- and the lives it continues to touch.
AIDS QUILT In recognition of the burgeoning epidemic of HIV/AIDS on the Southside of Chicago where 1in 3 black gay/ bisexual men will be infected in their lifetime, the chapter worked to bring two blocks of the quilt to campus, educating, memorializing, and celebrating those who fought and continue to fight the disease.
GLOBAL GETDOWN With a an eye toward inequities in health, the event brought together students, professors, and community activists for a night of discussion, debate, and reflection on our place in the world of global health. Speakers included Ms. Whitney Cross from UNICEF and Dr. Monica Peck, Associate Director for Chicago Center for Diabetes.
2017 Summit
Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity.
If you're looking for a space to be uplifted by wonderful speakers, GlobeMed staff, alumni and other GlobeMed global health peers, come to Summit. In it's entirety, the stories shared by my GlobeMed peers, speakers, and our former Executive Director about how they stand for social justice and lead bravely were inspirational. Our Future Dear Friends, Each year of GlobeMed brings with it frustrating challenges, hard-worn accomplishments, and, of course, amazing friendships. We are honored for the chance to lead another year of critical reflection and dedicated work as we continue to work to fight health inequity in all its forms- both across the world and in our own backyards in Chicago. Next year we plan to continue our work in Woodlawn with Hope Works, our local partner. After a year of building an excellent relationship with staff and volunteers in the organization, we can’t wait to further involve the chapter with the excellent work Hope Works does on the Southside. Our partnership also gives us a jumping off point to explore other non-profit, ‘global’ health work that exists in our immediate vicinity. We also remain eager to repartner as we celebrate the successful completion of our five-year partnership with ASPAT Peru. We have all felt so, incredibly fortunate to be able to grow with ASPAT and develop lasting ties though both joint challenges and successes. We wish them all of the best in their future endeavors and can’t wait to see the amazing work they will continue to do. We live in a culture that is increasingly cynical about our ability to affect change in this world. We consider ourselves the luckiest people to be surrounded by a community who shows us how much cause we still have for hope.
