About GlobeMed Mission GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people.

The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, GlobeMed at the University of South Carolina has set out to improve the lives of big-hearted and sincere members of the district Balasore in Odisha, India for approximately six years. Each year, we strive to raise as much money as possible through our fundraisers, donors, public GHU and our benefit dinner, all successfully executed by having the unanimous passion of achieving social justice. In the 2016-2017 year, we welcomed new members in our chapter and shed light on various struggles/lack of resources that the community faces in India. Percent nights at popular restaurants, college events, and generous donations from friends and family allowed us to raise a substantial amount of money in the short timeframe we had. In addition to that, our GROW team started to build a stronger relationship with one another and their energy towards the grassroots trip increased and became more of value. Our GROW Trip was a major highlight of the year because our partner and the community developed a strong bond with our team. Despite not reaching our fundraising goal of the year, we were grateful for such kind and understanding partners who reminded us the true meaning of GROW and our partnership: success will always be present as long as you connect with each other, because without that there is no shared passion. Departing our partner location, our members reflected on what was successful and areas that could have used improvement throughout the year. Currently, the University of South Carolina chapter will focus primarily on recruiting and strengthening relationships between all members. The passion will act as a fuel for the actions of informing our campus about our partner and what we strive to achieve. With positivity and punctuality, we expect that not only will we achieve our fundraising goal, but will change the lives of all those involved in this partnership. Sincerely, Sava Patel and Maggie Pokalsky 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at the University of South Carolina
About our Chapter
GlobeMed at the University of South Carolina GlobeMed at the University of South Carolina was founded in the Spring of 2012 in a Physics classroom, with six students in agreeance to the amount of impact a global health organization could make in Columbia, SC. Our chapter was drawn to Alternative for Rural Movement’s community-based approach to their grassroots health initiatives, and a partnership formed that same year in the Fall. The chapter, existing for six years now, retained approximately fifteen members in the 2016-2017 year with a total of 30 alumni, 4 GROW trips, more than $10,500 raised, 5-6 projects funded, and the Magellan Scholar awarded to fund research regarding women’s health in Odisha, India.
since our founding in Spring of 2012, our chapter has grown from 10 to 92 members
since our founding in Spring of 2012, our chapter has raised $16,000.
KEY FACT: School dropout rate has decreased significantly from 66% to 12% in Orissa since ARM started educational intervention in 1997
Our Partnership
[Alternative for Rural Movement (ARM)] Founded in 1989 Alternative for Rural Movement was founded by Rajendra Rana in 1989. Mr. Rana started the non-profit organization shortly after living in Kolkata, seeing all the waste in his city and all the problems people of lower class faced. Understanding the severity of conditions in Odisha, Rana founded the organization and constantly worked on projects such as education, women’s health, agriculture, child abuse, and many others, targeting the rural areas. The University of South Carolina partnered with this wonderful non-profit organization in 2012 when the chapter first introduced the GlobeMed. Our mission is to help empower the deprived people of Odisha, India and to maintain a strong relationship with our partners. Some projects we are involved in include construction of sustainable latrines to combat communicable disease, creation and support of women’s self-help groups and financial and technical support for childline: a free hotline for abused and neglected children.
[Odisha, India] Population: 177,800 Balasore is a district inside the city of Baliapal in the state of Odisha. It’s greenery and peacefulness is what brings attraction as well as their beautiful Hindu and Buddhist temples. Although, the simplicity of these rural areas is what causes health problems to arise and become prominent. The community lacks proper water sanitation, medicine, a proper accessible hospital, higher yet affordable education, and sanitation overall. ARM strives to alleviate these problems in the best way they can, and because of them, many of the community members are beyond grateful.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Key metric: [7,750 people that will benefit] Cost of project: [$4,004.46] What the money directly funded: [10 Health Awareness camps, 3 Antenatal/Postnatal training, 200 mosquito nets, 30 first-aid boxes, 30 sports materials for schools]
GlobeMed at USC works with ARM in Odisha, India to fund multiple projects such as health awareness camps, tailoring machines, mosquito nets, sports equipment for the children at school, first-aid kits for the schools and antenatal and postnatal training for women.
] We provided 200 mosquito nets to the community in rural Balasore in order to prevent/minimize the spread of Malaria disease. This project impacted approximately 100 families and allowed community members to understand prevention and awareness to improve health conditions.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
Although we did not have too many members in our chapter this year, we tried our best to provide informative and take-home ideas and presentations. A couple of ghU activities that really stuck out to me were videos of people being interviewed about the spread of AIDS in their community, and a poverty simulation where we had to reevaluate our priorities in the situation of a natural disaster. GlobalhealthU is an extremely important aspect of GlobeMed because we, living in a developed country, need to be reminded the importance of our accessibility to numerous necessities and how we can carry over that accessibility to those in developing countries.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR [What are some benefits of being aware of the privilege that an individual has?]
[What can you do with this information in the future?]
[What are some of the major issues systematically in Mental Health in India? In the US?]
[How are rights influenced by ones environment?]
[How do we translate human rights into action?]
globalhealthU highlights from the year
[Girl Rising Film] [Staff members and friends attended the viewing of the film Girl Rising that informed us all about the high rate of illiteracy in young girls and women. Approximately 20 people attended and enjoyed the event. It was our biggest hit!
[Mental Health Crises: US and India] One of our successful ghU events was a presentation and simulation involving the mental health surrounding the US and India. We informed staff members of mental health issues that involved our developed country and tied it back to our partner’s country, and identified distinctions between both countrie’s beliefs.
[Maternal and Child Health Presentation] Our chapter had a presentation involving maternal and child health that occurred in the US and in our partner organization's location. It was a great presentation because it included surprising facts about the health deterioration in India as well as the healthcare in the US.
World Day of Social Justice [March 2nd, 2017]
[What did you do for WDSJ 2016?] For World Day of Justice, the movie Girl Rising was uploaded to watch for free in celebration of world day of justice and staff members and friends of GlobeMed at USC attended this viewing. We hoped people would understand the prevalence of young girls and women who are illiterate and how important it is to try to eradicate the illiteracy, especially since it is one of our targets with our partner organization. At the end of the viewing, many people commented on how much they enjoyed the movie and how surprised they were by some of the personal stories.

Our Future Dear Friends, GROW Interns and the coordinator will be visiting our partner, ARM, in Odisha, India in the summer of 2017. They are very excited and are ready to get to know all the amazing people they have heard about from previous GROW interns. Goals of 2017-2018 include fundraising more money, bonding with staff members and new members, and thinking of creative events for the upcoming year! We would also like to collaborate with other organizations in order to network and get to know other people who share the same passion of global health equity! If you would like to donate to our fellow partner organization, ARM, we would be most appreciative and it would directly benefit a myriad of people. We are accepting donations big and small on our Razoo page as well as personal checks and donations! Thank you for your time! Sincerely, Sava Patel and Maggie Pokalsky 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at the University of South Carolina
