The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, This year was a big year for GlobeMed at USC! After forming our new partnership with Spark Microgrants in 2015, we had a lot of questions: How would GlobeMed fit into the unique development model of our partner Spark and their community-designed and community-implemented projects? How could we use our resources and skills as college students to best support missions of health equity, sustainability, and empowerment? How can we fight to alleviate health disparities both abroad and in our own backyards? In the 2016-2017 year, we answered a lot of these key questions as a chapter. We formed close bonds with Spark Microgrants through our fundraising efforts and GROW interns, fully funded a community project in Pugwaro, Northern Uganda, and established a new local partnership right here in South Los Angeles with the urban gardening organization Los Angeles Green Grounds. At the same time, we also continued to explore difficult questions of ethics in our weekly member meetings, exploring topics ranging from Female Genital Cutting to Mental Health for Students to the 2016 Election and its Aftermath. We also hosted a number of community building events to foster a sense of cohesion within our chapter. We hope that in this new year we will continue to forge a network of GlobeMedders, the Spark Microgrants team, the LAGG staff, and the communities that we serve! About our Chapter
GlobeMed at USC GlobeMed at USC began in August 2007 and has become one of the premier global health organizations on campus and the only organization that prioritizes the idea of social justice in its pursuit of health equity. We partnered with Spark Microgrants in Spring 2015 and since then have fundraised $19,000 in order to fund the projects of two communities in Northern Uganda and have sent five GROW interns to work on the ground with Spark. In Fall 2016, we also began a second partnership with local South LA organization Los Angeles Green Grounds to help community members gain access to fresh, healthy food.

KEY FACT: Spark has partnered with 150 communities to date and their projects have had 94% sustainability.
Our Global Partnership [Spark MicroGrants]
Founded in 2010 Founded in 2010, Spark Microgrants aims to promote a ‘community-driven, expert-supported’ model of development by empowering rural community members in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, and Ghana to be their own primary drivers of social change. GlobeMed at USC has worked with the Northern Uganda branch of Spark Microgrants for two years (and counting!).
Northern Uganda Population: 5 million Gulu in Northern Uganda is home to one of Spark MicroGrants’ teams and is where GlobeMed focuses. The rural communities in this region are still recovering from years of conflict with neighboring countries as well as the Lord’s Resistance Army. Many communities are still recovering from forced internal displacement and poverty as a result of these conflicts.

GlobeMed at USC raised $9000 this year to fund an ox-rearing project in Pugwaro in Northern Uganda to increase their agricultural output and financial security. In the wake of the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency, many natives of Northern Uganda have returned to their homeland to rebuild their lives. Spark MicroGrants and GlobeMed at USC partnered this past year to provide funding for a community in northern Uganda with this goal in mind. Pugwaro, a community made up of six smaller villages, proposed an income-generating project to rear oxen and increase their seasonal output. GlobeMed at USC funded the purchase of six pairs of oxen, which will improve upon the farmers’ abilities to produce an abundant crop. Outside of improving crop output, this project will allow the communities in Pugwaro to make efficient use of the lands they took back (after being internally displaced), and will also foster a sense of financial security for the inhabitants of the six villages.
Our Local Partnership Los Angeles Green Grounds
GlobeMed at USC believes that we need to work to address health disparities in our own nearby communities as well as on a global scale. Therefore, last year we began a partnership with the grassroots organization Los Angeles Green Grounds, founded in 2010 by Florence Nishida and Ron Finley. LAGG turns South LA residents’ front lawns and parkways into edible gardens and urban farms to address issues of food scarcity as well as obesity and its related diseases. We are excited to continue to develop this partnership in the upcoming years!

Campaign Highlights UGLY SWEATER SALE Each year, GlobeMed at USC thrifts for ugly holiday-themed sweaters for USC students to wear to their seasonal parties. Not only is this one of our biggest and most visible fundraisers, it is also a great bonding event for GlobeMed members, because everyone gets to get involved, either by collecting or selling the sweaters.
MCAT COURSES One of our newest campaigns, selling discounted MCAT courses through Kaplan and Princeton Review has proved to be one of our most successful as well. We have raised almost half of our annual goal through these courses, and they allow us to make ourselves known to the pre-med community at USC.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2015 – 2016: 30 Number of community-building events: 10 Meetings are a good way to meet like-minded individuals, but it’s always fun to get to know GlobeMed members outside of school. This year, we had a number of bonding events, including beach bonfires, bake sale prep (pictured), dinner at our favorite local Mexican restaurant, and brunches at LA’s best restaurants.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. ghUs are a staple of every general meeting, where the coordinators present fascinating topics at the intersection of social justice and public health to a diverse student body. In meetings, we are able to discuss these topics and come out more educated.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR Is it right to deem other cultural practices (like FGA) “backwards” just because our culture doesn’t believe they are ethical? How can we destigmatize the discussion around mental health? How can we sustainably provide relief to the citizens in South Sudan who are struggling with the most recent man-made famine?
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2016
For WDSJ, we wanted fellow USC students to consider the question “What do you stand for?” as well as to inspire others to reflect on social justice issues on both a local and global scale, just like GlobeMed does. We tabled on campus and took photos for a social media campaign, and ended up having a lot of great discussions about the intersectionality of everyone’s unique passions!

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
For six weeks this summer, interns Ruthra, Tara, and Ivana collected stories and photos of community members about their experience with the Spark process in northern Uganda. They also designed a research project and completed data collection on Spark's health centers in eastern Uganda for a final proposal of a revision of Spark's Facilitated Collective Action Process.

GlobeMed at USC
Our Future Dear Friends, GlobeMed at USC has been around for ten years now, which means that we have solidified our presence as a club within the GlobeMed network and with our partners. With both a local partnership and a global partnership established, we can now set out to increase our visibility on USC’s campus. One of this upcoming year’s main goals remains to branch out of our health bubble and recruit and partner with organizations that fall outside the pre-health community. We are hoping to transition smoothly into our second year of partnering with LA Green Grounds, and continue supporting them by monitoring and evaluating the success of the urban gardens. We look forward to welcoming back our GROW interns and learning from their experiences working with the wonderful Spark team. And of course, we wish to keep learning from our general members and their own experiences, through ghUs and general meetings. We also plan on hosting a HillTop conference in Spring 2018 that focuses on the intersectionality of social justice.
