About GlobeMed Mission

GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

Vision

We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

Presidents’ Message GlobeMed at the university of virginia Dear chapter members, friends, and supporters of GlobeMed at the University of Virginia (UVa) and the Build Your Future Today Center (BFT): We are humbled and honored to say that the second year of GlobeMed at UVa has just concluded. While our status as a GlobeMed chapter and partnership with BFT are both still relatively new, we could not feel happier to be a part of this network that we have come to regard as our family. This year, we raised $5,500 for BFT’s Safe Child and Mother Project, and hosted our second Annual Benefit Dinner where we raised $922 and had more than 90 attendees, the most we have had to date. Additionally, we organized our second GROW trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia to work alongside BFT and its founder, Sedtha Long, for five weeks. Looking back on our accomplishments, we are aware that none of them would have been possible without the continued support and encouragement you all have provided. In the future, we hope to keep moving forward in strengthening our partnership with BFT and raising awareness about our mission. Leading our chapter this year has meant being resilient, patient, understanding, and most of all, loving. We have grown tremendously, both as leaders and as individuals, and we cannot wait to do it all over again. To BFT, thank you for teaching us that “knowledge is hope” and “peace is development”. To our chapter, thank you for being some of the most motivated, inspiring, and dedicated individuals we know. And to our friends, supporters, and the rest of the GlobeMed network, thank you for giving us a new meaning of family. Yours in Solidarity, Farah Shah and Summer Nguyen 2012-2013 Co-Presidents

GlobeMed at the university of Virginia

About Us GlobeMed at the University of Virginia (UVa) was found in the Fall of 2011 by a group of 11 motivated students. Shortly after, GlobeMed at UVa was partnered with the Build Your Future Today Center (BFT) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. To date, GlobeMed at UVa has raised $9000 for BFT to fund their Safe Child and Mother Project. Additionally, GlobeMed at UVa has produced about 30 dedicated chapter members, nine outstanding alumni, and organized two successive GROW trips focused on project development and evaluation.

since our founding in august 2011, our chapter has grown from 11 to 25 members.

Our Partnership Build your future today Siem Reap, Cambodia Population: 903,030 Cambodia experienced a genocide led by the Khmer Rouge in 1975 until 1979. Siem Reap is still recovering from this fatal event, in which over 4 million Cambodians were killed. Siem Reap healthcare and facilities are very limited and do not meet international standards. Hospitals and clinics cannot provide basic medical care. Malnutrition is a common contributing cause of death among children, which can lead to premature mortality. One cause of malnutrition is insufficient access to resources. Food availability is the ability of the people to directly produce the foods they need through their own activities in agriculture.

Build Your Future Today Founded in 2006 Build Your Future Today was founded in 2006 in order to help improve lifestyles of children living in poverty. Specifically, BFT's mission is to provide education and economic tools required to attain selfsufficiency among Cambodians. GlobeMed partnership started in Fall 2011. BFT's projects center around Community Education Development, Child Support Center, Community Healthcare/Nutrition Development, Community Peace Building, and Livelihood Improvement.

KEY FACT: Malnutrition contributes to an under-five mortality rate of 83 per 1,000 live births (CDHS, 2005). KEY FACT: Sixty-six percent of pregnant women in Cambodia are anemic.

Our Project

Impact Areas:

Nutrition, Maternal Health & Capacity Building

Nutrition Program, Safe Mother and Child Project & Community Education Training

$7,000

to fund a nutrition program, Safe Mother and Child project and community education training

Why Nutrition, Maternal Health & Capacity Building? Nutrition: Children are often born with low birth weights and/or do not receive the nutrition required to develop normal height, weight and mental development during the critical early years. Childhood anemia is estimated to affect more than 60% of children and Vitamin A deficiency 20%. The outcome is permanent stunting that robs the child of the chance to be fully healthy and another generation of mothers whose poor health perpetuate the problem. BFT believes in providing villages a way to grow crops to eliminate malnutrition. Maternal Health: It is essential to achieve the concepts of Safe Mother through promoting good health seeking behaviors among pregnant women, postpartum mothers and their families regarding pregnancy, delivery and the post delivery period for the mother and infant. In addition, we want to improve access to quality healthcare and health education for the communities and reduce high mother and child morbidity and mortality rates. BFT wants to provide education to the women in villages to promote good health. Capacity Building: It improves the quality of education and eliminate illiteracy by improving the quality of teaching and learning through supporting the teachers and providing necessary materials in a child-friendly school and a school readiness program. Most of the people are illiterate (68%) although some schools have been built and approximately 60% of children going to school, so BFT wants to provide education as a tool for self-sufficiency.

Funding a nutrition program, Safe Mother and Child project, and community education training that benefit community members in Arak svay and Sre Robong... Our project provided daily nutrition to stop the cycle of malnutrition, maternal health classes to reduce rates of mortality, and community education training and support for 253 families in the villages of Sre Robong and Arak Svay, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. By the end of the 4 years, over 300 pre and school children and over 1000 community members at both communities in Arak svay and Sre Robong will benefit directly and 1000 community members of neighboring villages will benefit indirectly from the projects. This will be achieved through school enrolments, and participation in integrated community health improvement and education activities.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature yearlong global health curriculum. This studentdesigned and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

This year, we wanted globalhealthU to not only provide information about important topics, but more importantly to ignite dialogues among the chapter that staff would bring home to their friends and family. We watched videos from TED talks, from speeches by prominent global health professionals, to slideshows of the GROW trip from the previous summer to try to spark interest and start discussion at a deeper level than a normal classroom setting. Whenever possible we had staff work together in teams to guess statistics, match information, or list countries in order to make everyone really deliberate and retain information (and of course the presence of candy is always helpful!).

Expanding the Dialogue on Health and Human Rights

KEY QUESTIONS

Why do human rights exist?

Is health a human right? Who has more rights than others? How are rights influenced by one’s environment? How do we translate human rights into action?

globalhealthU Highlights from the year

Global Poverty Project Presentation

February 13, 2013 Partnering with UNICEF at UVa, Asha for Education at UVa, MEDLIFE, U.N. Women at UVA, charity: water, and FACEAIDS, we had around 125 students and faculty come out to explore what it means to live in extreme poverty and address barriers to achieving development outcomes.

"1 billion people go to bed hungry, 800 million people have no access to clean drinking water and so 2.2 million children die each year."

"There are 1.4 billion people in the world living in extreme poverty. That's 1.4 billion people living on less than $1.25 a day."

“When you first meet someone, you ask if they are strong. When you answer back, you say ‘we are strong’.”

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

30 # OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS: 05 TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS:

The goal of community building within our chapter focused on bringing the group closer together, while also building ties with the greater Charlottesville community. Throughout the year, the community building team worked to plan and execute activities which aimed to either raise funds or awareness (and sometimes both). These activities included: tabling at the local downtown farmer's market, face painting and cookie decorating at a Charlottesville arts' block party (also used this opportunity to fundraise), a party early in the semester that encouraged bonding between staff and exec, a recommended film called Escape Fire - a part of the Virginia Film Festival which focused on America's healthcare system, and a final restaurant dinner for the exec.

GROW Internship Grassroots On-site Work

04 LENGTH OF STAY: 5 weeks

May 21 2013 – JUNE 30 2013

# OF GROW INTERNS:

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, WORK DESCRIPTION: students build capacity of In 2013, the GROW interns worked with BFT to their partner organization, help conduct monitoring and evaluation on their health and wellbeing statistics of the villages they engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term are funding through the Safe Child & Mother Program. Additionally, they helped construct a stability of their health survey for the villages. Lastly, the interns partnership. helped lead health education classes in the villages and teach English at the BFT center.

My GROW experience was unbelievably inspiring and life changing thanks to our partner NGO Build Your Future Today. Founder Professor Sedtha Long and staff members shared their wealth of knowledge and compassion with us, fully welcoming us into the Cambodian culture and engaging us in their flourishing education programs in Siem Reap villages. I was deeply saddened by the inaccessibility of health care in these rural villages, but awestruck after witnessing BFT's hard work and progress with reaching out to these villages. I am honored to have had the privilege of participating in the field work with BFT staff and for the ability to interact with, learn from, and teach the kindhearted villagers. -- Nadine Skaff, c/o 2015

World Day of Social Justice “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere.”

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

GLOBEMED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA joined 49 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 5rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2013, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. !

OUR QUESTION

Everyone has the right to...? and ...is a human right. !

BEHIND THE SCENES: We chose these questions because we believed that it was simple enough to get people thinking outside of the ideas in the box that the name "GlobeMed" immediately brings to mind. The responses that we received were broader than expected, from basic human rights that are commonly referenced, to daily experiences and emotions such as laughter and love. After collecting all of our responses from the chapter and our benefit dinner, we hung them up on a commonly traversed pathway on campus, allowing everyone walking by to read them and start an inner dialogue about universal human rights.

40

We asked over people at UVa, here’s how they responded >>>

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.

World Day of Social Justice GlobeMed at the University of Virginia asked 40 people to answer the question / to fill in the blank‌

Everyone has the right to...? and ...is a human right.

2013 DELEGATES: Tarik Buli, Clare Burchenal, Farah Shah & David Vaamonde

"Sometimes it seems impossible that our one small chapter could make a meaningful impact on the health of world, but I came back from Summit feeling inspired by the network of like-minded and passionate people who I now realize are the ones that will help us reach our goals and make that impact.“

Our Future GlobeMed at the University of virginia “GlobeMed has been a milestone in my undergraduate career – actually no, in my life. The experience has not only fueled my professional and career goals, but also my personal values and ambitions. I’ve learned that the spark of the single human relationship can ignite a momentum. I’m looking forward in seeing this growth in not only myself, but at the University of Virginia, Build Your Future Today Center and the GlobeMed network as a whole. This summer, we have our second GROW team spending five weeks on an internship with BFT in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Our GROW team consists of four UVa students whose goal is to build a stronger bond in our partnership. They also want to help improve the computers system programming for BFT as well as visit villages to see how improvements can be made to improve our project. During the school year of 2013 to 2014, we hope to strengthen communication among our members and work hard and efficiently as a unit. We aim to put on a 5K run to raise money for BFT. Our goal is to make it become an annual event. We also want to expand our outreach to the Charlottesville community and raise awareness of our organization. On campus, we hope to collaborate more with other likeminded clubs and participate in fairs as well as cultural events at UVa. Five years from now, we see GlobeMed becoming a wellestablished organization with annual events that involve both our campus and community members.
