Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at University of Southern California
Hi everyone! I want to take a moment to reflect on what we've accomplished this year. Starting from the most fundamental principles, we've been able to build an incredible group of motivated and passionate students and empower them to achieve an incredible goal. From just two co-presidents, we have expanded our message and our influence through our meetings and activities, spread awareness and encouraged global engagement on our campus, established a close partnership with the community of Hohoe, and fundraised to achieve a very tangible and important milestone for this community. I am so incredibly proud to have had the chance to work with all of you and share the experience of creating a new model of student engagement for the USC community. I can't express how much it has meant to me to be a co-president this year and see all of our efforts create such a tangible force for change. GlobeMed at University of Southern California
ABOUT US GlobeMed at USC was founded in 2007 in partnership with Care Net Ghana, which supports maternal and child health and education in rural Hohoe, Ghana. from 2007 to 2010, GlobeMed at USC fundraised to provide Hohoe's first fetal monitor and an educational computer lab for Care Net's youth center. Our chapter was re-established in 2011 and since then has raised over $10,000 to support community health worker training and equipment. We have organized multiple fundraisers, planned awareness events to promote social justice to students, participated in two GROW trips and won the Global Health Action Grant and the Africa Fund Student award.

OUR PARTNER Care Net Ghana WORKS IN HOHOE, GHANA POPULATION: 30,120 Hohoe, Ghana is near the center of Volta, a mountainous region home to beautiful natural landscapes and waterfalls. A traditional rural community based around agriculture and herding, the region of Hohoe faces the consequences of a lack of resources and infrastructure. With few trained doctors and limited transportation to urban healthcare centers, Hohoe's population is vulnerable in many ways.
KEY FACT: In Ghana, there is less than one trained doctor for every 10,000 people.
ABOUT CARE NET GHANA FOUNDED IN 1996 Care Net Ghana is a local non-profit that is dedicated to improving the quality of life of the vulnerable in society. Founded in 1996, Care Net Ghana has extensive experience addressing numerous factors that marginalize vulnerable groups especially women and children within Ghanaian communities. Joining with partner GlobeMed at USC in 2007, Care Net has worked to develop several areas of life for the underserved of Hohoe, including a youth center, career training, child rights, maternal health, and sustainable agriculture.

GlobeMed at University of Southern California Why capacity building? Maternal and child mortality are tragically high in rural Ghana, largely due to lack of access to medical care. Lack of education and care surrounding pregnancy and birth affects a wide variety of issues, from HIV transmission to childhood nutrition. By creating a sustainable resource to improve access to care, Care Net is investing in the future health of the next generation of Ghana.

OUR PROJECT
GlobeMed at USC is fundraising to provide training and equipment to community health workers in rural Ghana." Our goal this year was to educate and train 100 volunteers, five each from the 20 villages in the Volta region of Ghana, to become community health workers (CHW). This training will transform each motivated villager into an efficient, educated, and sustainable resource for his or her community. CHWs will provide prenatal care, birth assistance, and postnatal check-ups for mothers and children in their villages, where most births occur at home and access to healthcare is rarely available. Furthermore, our project will equip CHWs with traditional birth attendant (TBA) kits, sanctioned by the World Health Organization, which contain gloves, antiseptic, and other sterile equipment for use during deliveries.
CAMPAIGNS Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Since its rebirth this year, GlobeMed at USC has been proud to support the mission and vision of Care Net Ghana to improve maternal health in Hohoe. We're ecstatic that we have been able to raise over $9,000 to supply training and Traditional Birth Attendant kits to Care Net Ghana.
globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.
My experience as a globalhealthU Coordinator for this past year enhanced my time in GlobeMed so much more than I could have asked for. There was always more to think and talk about while planning our weekly activities than we could actually bring to staff meetings, but what did end up in meetings always gave me even more to think about. The material gave me so much perspective not just on how different people are living around the world, but what kind of responsibility we have to improve their quality of life.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.
globalhealthU ON-CAMPUS EVENTS
World AIDS Day December 1, 2011 World AIDS Day was a fullcampus, full-day event. Students stopped by our table on the main road through campus throughout the day, where we took pictures, and distributed red ribbons, condoms, and informational “fact-cards” about AIDS.
globalhealthU Jeapordy April 10, 2012 globalhealthU Jeopardy was a game we created during our in-depth investigation track to sum up what we had learned about birthing practices around the world. Split into 3 teams – the TBAs, Midwives, and OB/GYNs – our members competed by answering relevant jeopardy questions and earning points which allowed them to move on to the “next step” in their day as TBAs/Midwives/OBs. By the end of the game, each team had read through a typical day-in-the-life story of their assigned birth attendant, which ended with delivering a baby.
Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

COMMUNITY BUILDING Â

The members of GlobeMed at USC are more than a student organization, but also a family with common interests. In the past, we have had potlucks, Yogurtland runs after meetings, and parties for our members. Some of our members have even been able to see Paul Farmer speak and have breakfast with various ambassadors to the United States, on separate occasions. An integral part of our bonding is working together to plan and implement our World Day of Social Justice event, our event for World AIDS Day, and our fundraising parties, which all have been hugely successful events in the past. We have raised thousands of dollars through our events with all our proceeds going back to our partner organization, Care Net Ghana. Because we all value these events, we are able to accomplish a lot and have a lot of fun while doing so. In the fall, we plan to implement a big-little program to further integrate our new members into our GlobeMed family.

WORK DESCRIPTION: During the first week, interns traveled through rural villages to interview TBAs trained and equipped by the program we funded during the year. This was to get a sense of how the training had gone, and what steps should be taken next to improve the level of service they could provide to their communities. During the last 3 weeks, interns worked in Care Net’s youth center, teaching basic health lessons to Junior High students.
Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

GLOBEMED AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA joined 45 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 4th Annual World Day of Social Justice during the week of February 20, 2012, by asking professors to dedicate five minutes of class time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. GLOBEMED TEACH-IN HIGHLIGHTS: GlobeMed at USC had the privilege of interviewing many professors from widely disparate fields about how their work and research influenced social justice. MORE WDSJ ACTION ----------------------------------WHAT DOES EVERYONE DESERVE?: At the center of campus, GlobeMed at USC hosted an interactive art exhibit where students were encouraged with free t-shirts and information handouts to write or draw what they believe everyone deserves on a giant art installation. GlobeMed at USC hoped this question would provoke reflections on the blessings each of us has been given and our responsibility to be advocates for social justice in the world.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social wellbeing and justice for all.

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

GlobeMed began anew this year. Starting with just two copresidents, GlobeMed exploded onto campus, building a tight-knit community of dedicated, passionate, and incredibly talented people. Since then, we've had incredibly successful campaigns and fundraising events, hosted ridiculously fun Community Building events, and witnessed 3 members on an amazing GROW trip to visit our partner organization, Care Net Ghana. Our humble fundraising goal of $4000 was smashed when we more than doubled it! GlobeMed is so proud of where we've been and what we've accomplished, but we're even more excited for where we can go. GlobeMed is starting off the next year with a significant presence on campus, a strong team of motivated and enthusiastic Eboard and Staff, and the knowledge that what we do in Los Angeles has a tangible impact for Care Net Ghana. What we do matters, and we're so excited to do even more. Next year, we'll be expanding our benefit concerts, spreading more GlobeMed Love with bigger Community Building events, and are challenging ourselves to an even bigger fundraising goal!
