GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

Vision

We envision a world in which health â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the ability to not only survive but thrive â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

Presidents’ Message GlobeMed AT UW-MADISON Looking back on the past two years of GlobeMed at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, I am truly astounded by what we have been able to accomplish. Raising nearly $30,000 in two years – at the same time as founding a tight-knit community, volunteering locally, and putting on multiple large educational events on campus – is no small feat, and I’m endlessly proud of everyone who has been involved. More than anything, I’m grateful. Grateful for the friends I’ve made, the people I’ve met, the lessons I’ve learned, and, more than anything, I’m grateful to GlobeMed for the chance it’s given me to have my life these past two years mean something important. Through GlobeMed, our lives take on a deeper level of importance, and none of us could do it alone. Our partner and the wonderful community we’ve built on campus allow us to be part of something bigger and better than most college students have the chance at. Stepping down after two years of co-presidency, I can honestly say that my proudest moment was when I realized I was not needed anymore. The leaders who are stepping up next year will continue to grow our chapter, foster our relationship with our partner, and network on campus in bigger and better ways than we could have dreamed. About Us In the spring of 2011, a fellow UW-Madison student yearned to find a cause that would seize her passion, Captivated by the details online she applied and was accepted to launch a chapter. We formed our partnership in September of 2011 with the Cambodian Organization for Women’s Support via Skype. Our team gained momentum, with 42 active members, enthusiastically committed to health for all. Now, about three years later, our chapter here at UW-Madison is stronger than ever. We have 47 active members, all of which have played a crucial role in our incredible successes. We more than doubled our fundraising goal from last year and through our fundraising and education efforts have been able to educate and empower our campus on the health issues we face today. We will be going on our first GROW trip in the summer of 2013 to Cambodia which will help us to better understand the people we are partnered with which will only lead to a stronger partnership. If every year is as successful as this one, imagine what GlobeMed as an organization will be able to accomplish in the future.

Our Partnership Cambodian Organization for Women's Support (COWS) Kampong Thom Population: 708,398 There was much disunity among citizens during the Vietnam War because the US and the South Vietnamese were trying to disrupt the Viet Cong and Khmer Rouge and in 1975, the Khmer Rouge overthrew the government and would lead to one of the worst genocides in history. Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge wanted to create an agrarian society with communist ideals and later eliminated many groups of people who might negatively inﬂuence his eﬀorts. Therefore, all intellectuals were killed, political and civil rights were completely abolished and thousands were sent to labor camps. By 1979, 1.7 million people had been killed (21% of the population).

Cambodian Organization for Women's Support (COWS) Founded in 1993

Founded in 1993 by five women after 1st UN-facilitated elections in Cambodia. COWS works in 99 villages in 19 communes in 6 districts in Kampong Thom Province. COWS projects include family planning, promoting good governance, distributing agricultural inputs to farmers (seeds, fertilizers, cooking stoves, etc.), support handicraft producers, education on domestic violence, Environment and fishing (recently ended in 2010), protecting community’s women and children, Promoting democratic participation in government, prevention of child trafficking. COWS envisions that Cambodian people, especially women, including the vulnerable and marginal live healthy and with dignity in peaceful communities, upholding gender sensitivity and exercising effective participation in governance and development. GlobeMed's partnership with COWS began in 2011.

Why Vocational Training & Entrepreneurship? Our project focuses on the economic empowerment of rural youth by creating local jobs in critical areas of need within Kampong Thom. Stable jobs will boost local economic opportunity and prevent unsafe emigration, allowing people to lead healthier lives. Matching participants with local tradesmen, teaching them entrepreneurial skills, and providing seed money, gives them the opportunity to start their own business, sustain their ﬁnancial independence, and support an improved quality of life.

GlobeMed at UW-Madison raised over $15,000 to provide vocational training to 30 individuals in Kampong Thom. Dance party fundraiser collaboration with campus Chi Phi fraternity.

GlobeMed Bake Sales

We prepared baked goods including chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and bars and sold them for one dollar each in front of Campus Sportswear on State Street from 10pm to 2am on a Friday night. All proceeds went to COWS.

Cup Night at Chasers

We hosted a Cup night at a local bar called Chasers as a fundraising event. We sold $5 cups at the door and then buyers received half price drinks at the bar.

Serving for a Cause

We hosted a volleyball tournament with 9 teams at the SERF on April 20th. The event lasted from 11-3:30, with 6 rounds of play. Campus Candy sponsored the event and donated free frozen yogurt to all members of the winning team.

5K Run for Global Health

We teamed up with PIH Engage to put on a 5K. The course started and ended at the Nat. The hope is to make this even bigger in the future!

$15,382.50 Since 2011, GlobeMed at the University of Wisconsin - Madison has raised just over $24,000 to support the Cambodian Organization for Women's Support (COWS) in Kampong Thom, Cambodia.

Campaigns Highlights from the year 5K Run for Global Health GlobeMed at UW-Madison put on a 5k with Madison's PIH Engage and had a total of 75 people participate in the run/walk. There were diďŹ&#x20AC;erent people stationed around the route holding various facts about Global Health and the Global Health Institute provided us with GlobeMed water bottles which we gave to each runner to thank them for participating.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

We as GlobeMed form sustainable partnerships, we learn about global public health, and we ignite passion for health equity in ourselves and others. Without the global health university (ghU) program, the GlobeMed model would be incomplete. Through our weekly lessons at staff meetings and our awareness campaigns, the ghU committee at UW – Madison seeks to enhance and challenge the understanding of global heath both in our chapter and in our community. This year, in addition to focusing on human rights in our weekly lessons, ghU held several campus awareness events including an informational table on World AIDS Day, a professional panel which we co-hosted with One Acre Fund, a World Day of Social Justice campaign, and an awareness event on extreme poverty called Live Below the Line. We also spent most of second semester learning about the complex global public health issue of sex trafficking and how it affects both our partner community in Cambodia and our own communities in the United States.

globalhealthU Highlights from the year

World AIDS Day In partnership with Planned Parenthood, we raised awareness about AIDS by handing out condoms in Union South. We also provided information about GlobeMed and Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood provided condoms and birth control swag.

Live Below the Line We put on 11 educational events in 2012-2013 that reached 723 people.

GlobeMed members spent 5 days feeding themselves with $1.50 a day – the U.S. equivalent of the extreme poverty line, in order to give them a glimpse into the lives of 1.4 billion people who have no choice but to live below the line every day – and who have to make $1.50 cover a lot more than food…

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

The 2012/2013 Community Building at UW-Madison has consisted of a balance between volunteering events, fun staff socials, and two day long team building retreats. Since the UWMadison chapter is fairly new any just finishing up its second year, Community Building has focused on generating strong relationships between staff members and has worked to provide activities to help members get to know one another outside their committee to build one efficient and comfortable chapter. We spent the semesters volunteering a a number of various community organizations around the local Madison community, and the second semester we focused our volunteer time on just one local non-profit to start a local partnership. We also planned various social activities such as potlucks at staff meetings, attending the comedy club as a chapter, Dinner parties, and many more fun activities. This has been a very successful year for our chapter and the friendly and close staff community has been the key to that success.

WORK DESCRIPTION: OUR TEAM OF INTERNS ASSISTED IN THE EVALUATION OF OUR CURRENT PROJECT THROUGH INTERVIEWING THE STUDENTS TO IDENTIFY ANY CHALLENGES THEY MAY BE FACING, WE ALSO TRAVELED TO MULTIPLE VILLAGES WITHIN KAMPONG THOM TO SURVEY VILLAGE MEMBERS ON DIFFICULTIES THEY FACE ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS. WITH THIS INFORMATION, OUR TEAM COLLABORATED WITH COWS TO DEVELOP THE RURAL FAMILY SANITATION PROJECT, TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN 2014.

World Day of Social Justice “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere.”

GLOBEMED AT UW-MADISON joined 49 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 5rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2013, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. OUR QUESTION

Every human deserves… BEHIND THE SCENES: Our chapter wanted to make people around campus think about universal human rights. We posed the question "Every human deserves _____" to find out what ideas students and other community members had about social justice, and to encourage reflection on human rights and what factors may be affecting access to those human rights. Our partner and many GlobeMed partner organizations around the world struggle to advocate for and exercise their own human rights. We thought it was important to get people thinking about how we are all part of one world and how every human deserves certain, inalienable rights.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports eﬀorts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.

2013 Summit The student momentum The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

This summer is our chapter’s first ever planned GROW internship and those attending are anxiously preparing to travel to Kampong Thom, Cambodia for nearly a month. While those plans are underway, GlobeMed at UW-Madison also has a team of staff preparing our Hilltop application for the upcoming year, as being granted the ability from the National Office to hold a Hilltop is a significant goal for our chapter. Our hopes are to hold a Hilltop to work towards being recognized within the GlobeMed network as a chapter with ambition and high capabilities. One of our major goals for the upcoming years is to instill a mentorship program between members of our GlobeMed chapter and leaders across various fields in the Madison community. Our goals of the mentorship program would be to provide members with the opportunity to learn applicable skills and receive hands on guidance that they can utilize not only for GlobeMed but also in their career for future years to come. In addition, the mentorship program at GlobeMed UW-Madison would fashion and fortify bonds with local members and organizations in the community to increase awareness of our cause to an audience outside of campus and hope to establish a lasting impact in the Madison area.
