ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

OUR MISSION

“

GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis

Dear Friends of GlobeMed at Washington University in St. Louis, It has been a pleasure and tremendous privilege to lead our chapter of GlobeMed this past year. Over the past months our chapter expanded in numbers while also gaining a sense of community in which members took ownership over various fundraising campaigns, global health awareness initiatives, and community building events. We surpassed our fundraising goal to raise a record $13,5000 to support our partner NGO’s projects in rural and peri-urban communities in Uganda by both developing new innovative campaigns and strengthening our older ones. Much of these changes came from within the members of our general body, one of our chapter's greatest achievements. In addition to outdoing our own fundraising expectations our chapter put together an incredibly Second Annual Global Health Banquet which connected dozens of public health professionals throughout St. Louis with over 60 Washington University students in an intimate dinner atmosphere. As a result of this event, as well as others, we also are proud to say we believe we have strengthened our presence on campus as a student group of committed, passionate individuals who strive to incorporate action as an integral part of their educations. This report summarizes our efforts over the past year but falls short of embodying what cannot be described in numbers and pictures: a burgeoning community of students driven by their passion for social justice and their vision of a more equitable world.

ABOUT US

Our chapter was formed in September of 2008 after our chapter founder came upon the community based non-governmental organization Uganda Development and Health Associates (UDHA) while working on a service project in Uganda. Inspired by the dedication and passion of the NGO’s founders and staff and the efficacy of their programs, he sought a sustainable model for supporting UDHA’s initiatives. Since then, our chapter has grown from six initial members to a chapter of fifty-seven students committed to working towards equity in health. We have sent four Grassroots On-site Work Teams to work with our partner organizations for the past four years and have raised over $35,000 for our partner organization in that time.

since our founding in september 2008 , our chapter has grown from 06 to 57 members.

Uganda Development and Health Associates (UDHA) WORKS IN IGANGA, UGANDA POPULATION: 482,000 UDHA is located in a relatively rural community centered around one main street. The community and its members do not have great access or capabilities to access healthcare and AIDS and malnutrition are very prevalent. UDHA has historically, and is still today, been centered on maternal and child health and these are still the main areas we assist them in.

KEY FACT: Life expectancy = 47 years old.

ABOUT UDHA FOUNDED IN 2003 Uganda Development and Health Associates is an NGO that was founded in 2003. It is a rural based organization dedicated to serving the poor and vulnerable members of our society. Initially, the organization was involved in various community-based activities in health, specifically in the areas of HIV/AIDS, malaria control, sanitation, adolescent sexual reproductive health, school health and immunization. It continues to be active in these areas today.

UDHA

GlobeMed at WashU in St. Louis Why child and maternal health?

This area is very important in the communities of Iganga and Naigobya because newborns and young children are not receiving proper care. Often this is a result of their parents simply being uninformed about good practices. UDHA hopes to work past this primarily through education.

Malnutrition Intervention Project" We funded an education based malnutrition intervention project focused on children under the age of 5. The project utilizes 15 community health workers whose job it is to educate and inform the community members of Naigobya about what constitutes a nutritious meal, how to plant and maintain a backyard garden as well as proper care for newborns and small children.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

2011-2012 CURRICULUM ORIENTATION Chapter members were equipped with a thorough understanding of the values of GlobeMed and explored their personal values. POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.

GlobalhealthU was flat out awesome this year. This year we emphasized small group discussions and this really fostered great conversations every meeting. From discussing different economists views on foreign aid for developing countries, to discussing the difference between the words equity and equality, GHU became a highlight of every meeting for our members.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.

COMMUNITY BUILDING Â Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

We had a number of wonderful community building events this year, beginning with our fall retreat. The majority of our members spent the afternoon in nearby Forest Park discussing about what it means for us to be a member of GlobeMed. This event, as well as a number of smaller parties and dinners, gave our members the opportunity to get to know each other on a new, more personal level. It allowed us to hold in depth conversations about our beliefs while also seeing each other through new lenses. This ability to do so greatly enhanced our success in fundraising as we set a chapter record and way overshot our goal!

WORK DESCRIPTION: Two of our interns are working in a Youth Center in Iganga, Uganda. This is where UDHA is headquartered. They are working on sexual health outreach to teens throughout the area and also working with UDHA to expand the youth center's reach in the community. The other two interns are working in Naigobya on the Malnutrition project. They are working with UDHA to expand the project as well as increase its efficiency in the community.

Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

GLOBEMED AT WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS joined 45 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 4th Annual World Day of Social Justice during the week of February 20, 2012, by asking professors to dedicate five minutes of class time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. GLOBEMED TEACH-IN HIGHLIGHTS: Michelle Repice of the History Department talked about social justice issues in America and how she changed her graduate program from Economics to American Culture Studies because she didn't think her economics institutions factored social responsibility into most economic programs. She also talked about how she shaped her class in order to focus on areas of inequity. Sudeshna Bandyopadha, a senior lecturer in the Economics Department at WashU talked about a study done on child laborers after child labor laws had been enforced in southeast Asia in which most children (who were generally born to produce some sort of revenue for the parents) did not back to school, but instead went on to work some illegal industry where child labor laws are not enacted. This illustrated for one student how western powers can come in with the right idea, but it could have unforeseen negative impacts.

2012 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT

2012 DELEGATES: Tenaya Drapkin, Preethi Kembaiyan, Michelle Knopp, Michaela Kupfer, Eli Madden, Pia Marcus, Adam Nadler, Katherine Palmer, Jenni VanderWeele, Jeremy Winkler, Alaina Smith, Kim Smith

"Each year, the Summit serves as a powerful reminder of the potential of our network. It pulls into sharper focus our vision of the world that we are striving for. Seeing hundreds of students from across the country coming together to share what drives them and sustains them gives us a chance to feel, firsthand and in-person, the support and strength of our network and never fails to reinvigorate our passion and re-energize our efforts to realize health as a human right."

-- Preethi Kembaiyan,, c/o 2012

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

“My last year with GlobeMed has been an incredible culminating experience in so many ways: I've watched our chapter grow into a community of passionate and caring individuals who work together, and rely on one another to question our perspectives and involvement in our work. I've watched us learn from past experiences in our campaigns and ghU events and discussions and become a more powerful presence on campus than I could have imagined in my freshman year. Most notably I've seen so many people grow in their experiences, transformed from wide-eyed freshman to vocal advocates for global health equity. It's something I'm proud to have been a part of, and it gives me hope and will drive me to continue our work after graduation. I know the difference we can make, in our communities and in our world, and I'll always have my friends from our chapter to remind me of that. .” – Preethi Kembaiyan, c/o 2012

The future of GlobeMed-Wash U has never been brighter. With our highest membership yet, and members who have already exemplified their dedication to the organization, we are really looking forward to the year ahead. We will be setting our fundraising goal within the month but we hope to again exceed $10,000 in fundraising for UDHA. We hope to begin the year with a community building retreat and continue to foster that sense of community by creating consistent fun events outside of meetings for our members. It is also our goal to do a better job of collaborating with other public and global health groups on campus. We are really looking forward to the year and we would love your assistance in helping us reach our goals in any way possible!
