GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

Message from the Co-Presidents Dear Friends,

Global health today is a topic of stark contrasts. While scientific advancements have developed sophisticated medicines, the most basic care is often out of reach for the majority of the world’s population. GlobeMed evolved out of an idea that health is a human right, and that solidarity is the only sustainable solution to the pressing needs of today’s society. As a chapter, GlobeMed at Wayne State University has been through many hurdles. From re-partnering in its first year to tirelessly working to establish a campus-wide forum for global health dialogue, our Staff and E-board members, in tandem with our partner KIHEFO have made amazing strides toward improving health access and equity abroad.

We are continuously inspired by the work that KIHEFO does in its communities, and this has been the basis of our work in Detroit. By understanding and respecting the dignity of the patients and their wellwishers in Uganda, our chapter’s efforts remain directly connected to the people we advocate for. This year’s amazing campaigns and ghU discussions are a testament to such a philosophy.

GlobeMed has personally motivated us to push for bolder visions while remaining grounded and humble in the process. We encourage that you join us in the movement for global health equity.

About Us GlobeMed at Wayne State University

GlobeMed at Wayne State University was founded in Summer 2012 after Ani Mannari saw first-hand the health disparities that people face in the developing world. He was inspired to start GlobeMed with Shreya Desai after learning of the community-based healthcare model of GlobeMed's partner organizations. Since its founding, GlobeMed at Wayne State has raised nearly $7000 to support The Nutrition Rehabilitation Center, expanded to a staff of twenty, and held two GROW Internship with ten students during summer 2013 and 2014 in Kabale, Uganda.

Our Partnership

Kigezi Healthcare Foundation (KIHEFO) Founded in 2001 Kigezi Healthcare Foundation was founded to address the needs of HIV/AIDS patients who constantly sought medical attention from Dr. Geoffrey Anguyo, the founder of KIHEFO. Upon realizing the widespread effects of HIV/AIDS on malnutrition, a Nutrition rehabilitation center was created to nurture vulnerable children back to normal health. Today, KIHEFO has numerous programs including microfinance and enterprise ventures, primary care clinic, and rural village outreaches. KIHEFO strives to partner with GlobeMed at Wayne State to address malnutrition and ignorance in a sustainable and community-based manner. KEY FACT: More than

This eventually led Uganda to become one of the most corrupt governments in the world. Governmental inaction propagates poverty and illiteracy forcing the population to further mistrust the government. Lack of public services have severely deteriorated the nutrition of the Kigezi Region, especially in children under the age of ﬁve. Although Uganda is known to be the most fertile country in Africa, ignorance and gender roles continue to propagate health disparity in Kigezi.

Our Project GlobeMed at Wayne State raised $5,000 to fund a nutrition education and agricultural training program for 40 families in Kabale, Uganda.

In an effort to address the growing problem of child malnutrition in the Kigezi region, our chapter developed a strategic plan that attacks the issue from two different angles: direct, immediate nutritional interventions and agricultural education and training programs for long-term sustainability. Our nutrition center support combined with kitchen gardens and agriculture training aims to create sustainable nutritional sources in the communities of Kabale.

Wayne Madness 3v3 Tournament Campaign date: March 13, 2014

To celebrate the spirit of March Madness, our chapter organized a benefit 3v3 Basketball Tournament. With over 50 attendees, the tournament had a great turnout. The winning team received a gift card from Slows to Go BBQ.

Rummage Sale Campaign date: April 14, 2014

The rummage sale we had included gently used clothing, shoes, games, and other items which we sold in the campus courtyard. We also shared the story of our partner organization and the value of each customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contribution to addressing malnutrition in Uganda.

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

As co-directors of community building, Yash and Chad aimed to welcome everyone to GlobeMed and introduce them to the organization's goals. During executive board retreats, members learned effective communication skills, team building, responsibility, and more skills that were required for a strong chapter. These executive board retreats mixed both staff bonding and chapter work. Staff retreats welcomed staff members into the group and connected everyone on the same level, no matter their class standing or years spent in the chapter. Yash and Chad introduced members to the history of GlobeMed through a campus scavenger hunt, as well as performing team exercises. The co-directors of community building wanted to make all members feel comfortable in the chapter and show them that no matter what class standing they were in or what knowledge that had about the organization, everyone was still an important part of the team.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. ghU contextualizes every aspect of the GlobeMed experience, and brings the reality in health disparities that GROW members witness back home to the whole chapter. Through stimulating discussions, ghU encourages us to think for ourselves and push our boundaries a little farther. The ghU model for this year created a space for connecting the specifics of our partner setting and our university setting, as articulated by one of our committed chapter members, Aayush Mittal: "Oftentimes in a global health group, individuals who do not travel are left only with fundraising. Although important, this leaves those who do not travel with little global health experience and a lack of initiative. Thanks to ghU, everyone is able to discuss important current events, relate cultures, and even come up with possible solutions to real issues. Thanks to ghU, I received a very different outlook on the way global health is perceived. The world is a changing place with an ever growing global market. With this, cultures blend and often global health is put second to the global economy. With the help of ghU and GlobeMed, hopefully we can change this and raise awareness for global health. One of my favorite activities was when we all ranked values of our cultures and compared them to each other. Even within WSU students we had major differences in culture, just imagine what we can learn about students from Uganda."

Health & Empowerment: Building Bridges from Detroit to Uganda Event date: Monday, Nov. 11, 2013

This event was in partnership with SEED Wayne, an organization dedicated to developing sustainable food systems in Detroit. The event featured Dr. Kami Pothukuchi, the founder of SEED Wayne, and Dr. Geoffrey Anguyo, the founder and director of the Kigezi Healthcare Foundation, our partner. Both spoke on the health issues facing their respective local communities, and their presentations proved how many of the nutritional issues faced in our city are not so different than the issues faced in Ugandan communities. Half the Sky Documentary Screening Event date: Sept. 26, 2013 This event was in partnership with WSU Half the Sky. The event consisted of screening the Half the Sky documentary, and was followed by a panel discussion featuring professors from Anthropology and Women's Studies as well as leaders from two non-profit organizations, buildOn and Alternatives for Girls. The diversity of the panel allowed for a good discussion on how various social issues intersect to affect all aspects of a community, and also touched upon the balance between global and local community service.

World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2014

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am privileged to have ___â&#x20AC;? & "What do you fight for?"

Behind the Scenes: We had a small activity set up that focused on global wealth disparity, and we used this to lead into the question on privilege, which was used for our photo project. The activity consisted of drawing a slip of paper from a jar, for top 1%, middle 31% or bottom 68%, and students were given either a large chocolate bar, mini chocolate bar, or a peppermint based on what they drew. The activity allowed for consideration of how we often we take for granted the choices we have that many others in the world do not. This led into the photo project question. Some students also elected to write what they fight for on a Post-it note and put it on our banner -- together, the three components shined light on how privilege can be translated into a means of giving back and extending solidarity to communities, both global and local, that are underprivileged. We also set up a guerrilla marketing poster in the dining hall to encourage consideration of privilege when it comes to food, and to promote less food wastage.

“Breaking Barriers, Building Connections” The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts. “Summit builds unity in our network. It’s a refreshing end to what can be a tiresome year. Summit’s ability to engage people in amazing discussions combined with a “oneness” that’s unique to the GlobeMed network, allows me to realistically visualize the future of our work while building strong partnerships with professionals in the field. GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dr. Anguyo took us to a burial site of a child that had just died earlier today from malnutrition. The mother was unable to bring the child to the nutrition center since it's incredibly far away and she has other children to look after. It's sad that in Ugandan tribal culture the fathers simply don't take care of the children. We offered our condolences to the mother. Our chapter is growing! From our small beginnings until today, we are striving to make great changes in the way we advocate for healthcare in our partner community in Uganda. Although we pride ourselves in our innovative model of sustainability, we also give all our credit to the Staff of KIHEFO and the individuals who are working tirelessly to get health access to the poorest of the poor. As we look to the future with an eye on the past, our chapter has solidified it operational systems and built strong partnerships with local organizations and University departments. Through our agriculture inputs programs with KIHEFO and the Rabbit Farming Project in partnership with SeedGrants, our partnership looks forward to improving health for all. On the organizational level, our values of humility keep us grounded in our goals and ensure a working philosophy of progress.

We are always looking for supporters to help us improve health in Uganda in a sustainable way.
