Dear friends and supporters of GlobeMed at Whitman, Wow. What a journey this has been. GlobeMed at Whitman’s inaugural year has brought challenges and rewards greater than we could have imagined. Thank you for supporting us; without the help of our incredibly dedicated leadership team and staff, and contributions from our wonderful donors, we could not have made our accomplishments possible.
IN THIS REPORT:
Our chapter began in August 2011 with one founding member and grew until the end of the year in May with over 20 committed members. It has been a year of growth and hard work for both ourselves and our partner organization, Burmese Women’s Union. We are proud to announce that we have exceeded our goal and raised over $3,775 for both a Reproductive Health training project and a Nutrition project with Burmese Women’s Union in Mae Sot, Thailand

These funds were possible from generous donations through our individual giving campaign as well as fundraisers on campus that we hope will become traditions for years to come: Hike for Burma, Wing it for Women Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, and a Coin War. We also hosted a professor panel on Global Health, an awareness event for World AIDS Day, and screened the film Burma VJ on campus. We’re proud to announce that we sent our first team of GROW interns to work on-site in Thailand Summer 2012!

Hike for Burma
Six resident Halls participated in a competition to win ice cream bars and a private concert by one of the acapella groups on campus. Dollars counted as negative points and coins counted as positive for the competition.
Students went on a hike in the Umatilla mountain range. We hiked next to a stream and looked at wildflowers.

ABOUT US In 2011, a student at Whitman saw no major outlet for global or public health through the college curriculum and so she founded GlobeMed at Whitman. Our chapter has grown from two members to twenty members this year. Our partnership with the Burmese Women's Union was established in the fall of 2011. We have raised over $3,700 this year to support a women's reproductive health program and a nursery.

Burmese Women's Union WORKS IN MAE SOT, THAILAND POPULATION: 206,000 BWU serves Burmese women in migrant communities and refugee camps in Thailand. The organization was founded by a group of young women who fled Burma in the aftermath of the military junta's violent crackdown in 1988. Preventative care and education is virtually absent in Burma; people KEY FACT: There are immigrate with little knowledge of nutrition, sexually 170,000 Burmese refugees transmitted illness (STI), and family planning. ABOUT BURMESE WOMEN’S UNION FOUNDED IN 1995 “While working in the movement for peace and democracy along the Thai-Burma border, BWU's young founders recognized that there was a lack of awareness about women's rights and gender issues, among both women and men in Burmese society. They formed BWU to work towards the acceptance of women's rights in Burmese society and to encourage women to participate in the political and social reform that is necessary for peace and stability in Burma. Today BWU operates along the ThaiBurma, India-Burma and China-Burma borders. By providing educational trainings, increasing access to accurate information and providing women a safe place to gather and [to foster discussion], BWU works to increase the capacity of women from Burma to participate in the pro-democracy movement. BWU believes that multi-ethnic unity and women's participation are imperative to the building of a democratic, peaceful society in Burma.” --Thwel Zin Toe, BWU

OUR PROJECT Burmese Women’s Organization
GlobeMed at Whitman College Why maternal health? The women’s reproductive health project is critical to filling the gap in reproductive health education for Burmese migrant and refugee women. Burmese women are denied their right an education by the corrupt Burmese education system and the economic hardships faced by lowwage migrant factory and farm laborers. Reproductive health education and the provision of family planning supplies will directly prevent the unwanted pregnancies, STIs, and unsafe abortions prevalent among migrant women, and further the long term goal of empowering Burmese women.
225 WOMEN WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS PROJECT.
$1,834 TO PURCHASE MATERIALS FOR THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH TRAININGS AND CONTRACEPTIVE MATERIALS.
GlobeMed at Whitman raised $1,833 to fund reproductive health discussions and trainings for Burmese women migrant and refugees in Mae Sot, Thailand. " The reproductive health education project includes one three-day reproductive health training for women in the Mae La Oo refugee camp, ten one-day reproductive health trainings for Burmese women in the Mae Sot migrant community, and materials providing 40 women with birth control for one year. The targeted women are refugees, or migrant laborers employed illegally to be underpaid, denied their rights, and abused by employers. Because these women lack access to education and higher paying jobs, the refugee and migrant communities see fertility rates above their economic means, and high rates of domestic abuse and accompanying mental health issues. This reproductive health training project aims to restore women’s right to reproductive health, positively impacting 225 women.
Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Whitman students living on-campus participated in a coin drive for two weeks. The section with the most amount of points won an ice cream sandwich party and a Capella performance.
Wing it for Women
Whitman students formed ultimate frisbee teams and spent an afternoon participating in a tournament.

$3,806.49 In our first year in GlobeMed partnering alongside the Burmese Women's Union in Thailand, our chapter has raised over $3,000.
CAMPAIGNS HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR
Coin War April 2-13, 2012 Whitman students in six residence halls participated in this fundraiser. Each hall was divided into sections, which then competed against themselves to earn the most points. Points were earned by donating into the halls’ containers. Coins were positive points (i.e. quarter = +25) and dollars were negative points (i.e. $1 = -100). Therefore, students placed coins in their sections' container and dollars in other sections' containers. The winning sections won an ice cream sandwich party and an a Cappella performance.
Hike For Burma May 4, 2012 18 Whitman students and GlobeMed members spent an afternoon hiking in the Umatilla Forrest located in the state of Oregon. The goal with this particular campaign was to foster solidarity with Burmese refugees that fled Burma, as well as have an afternoon in the great outdoors. Participants' registration fee included transportation, snacks, a TShirt so generously donated by Sports Authority in Holland, Ohio and a small donation to the Burmese Women's Union, our partner organization.
globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

globalhealthU
POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.
Since this was the inaugural year for GlobeMed at Whitman College, globalhealthU was a key part of setting the tone for our chapter and laying a foundation of knowledge for our members. Beginning with an overview of what global health is, identifying key terms, and exploring what poverty is, we set the stage for more in-depth discussions surrounding these issues. We had particular success creating poverty-health cycles where each small group depicted how ill health contributes to poverty, which cycles back around to influence ill health. Another successful lesson we had was our indepth investigation where we looked more closely at the political situation in Burma to better understand our partner. globalhealthU was an integral part of laying the foundation for our GlobeMed chapter because it encouraged discussions surrounding confusing topics that led people to ask questions and expand their knowledge of the issues of global health.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.

During GlobeMed’s first year at Whitman College, community building activities focused on bringing together a new group of people and developing relationships that transcended academic disciplines and grade levels to unite our chapter members around global health issues. The fall staff retreat gave the executive board an opportunity to get to know one another. In the spring, we spent a night at Whitman’s College Cabin allowing us to hang out together outside of regular meetings. After the final campaign, we held a picnic to discuss our accomplishments from the first year and to identify goals for the following year.

WORK DESCRIPTION: GROW interns will be focused on observing BWU programs, building relationships with members of the organization, and discovering the largest human rights and health disparities in the Burmese migrant and refugee population. Traveling between Mae Sot, the Mae La Oo Refugee Camp, and the BWU offices in Chiang Mai over 6 weeks, we will be able to begin to evaluate each of the GlobeMed funded programs. Developing personal relationships with women in BWU and in the migrant and refugee community will build trust and strengthen our partnership as well as our understanding of the health disparities faced by Burmese women.
Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

GLOBEMED AT WHITMAN COLLEGE joined 45 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 4th Annual World Day of Social Justice during the week of February 20, 2012, by asking professors to dedicate five minutes of class time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. GLOBEMED TEACH-IN HIGHLIGHTS: This project was special in that it allowed professors connect social justice to their personal fields and expertise. Professors could choose to talk about the economics of social justice, the environmental impacts, etc. While it was not out of the ordinary for some professors to bring the topic of social justice into their lectures, others had never seemed to do so before but we still able to make strong connections to their academic field and the ideas behind social justice.

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

All of us at GlobeMed@Whitman are very excited for the future. We are proud of all that we have accomplished this past year, but also ready to expand and build off the foundation we have laid. This past year we focused a lot of attention on getting our name and our mission "out there" and now we want to do that for BWU. We hope to see Burmese Women's Union not only become closer to our club next year, but to the campus as a whole. Therefore, we plan on focusing many of our campaigns (fundraising, educational, and awareness) on connecting the campus to BWU. However, we don't want to just stop at Whitman campus! We would also love to branch out into the Walla Walla community. We hope to make this possible by advertising our events off-campus more and even hosting some events themselves off-campus, as well volunteering more in the community as a team. Obviously, we don't want to "bite off more than we can chew" next year, but these are goals that we hope to accomplish step by step over the next few years. At the end of the day, we would like to be able to ask a student, or an active Walla Walla community member, what they know about GlobeMed and/or BWU and have them be able to say at least one thing. Perhaps by next Spring we just want them to be able to recognize the name, but the next year our goal will be to have them be able to describe our mission, and so on.
