Community Services Expo October 31
The Fraser Coast Community Services Expo will be on October 31 at the Maryborough City Hall. More than 400 people visited the expo last year, exploring the wide range of services available to them on the Fraser Coast. Exhibitors will offer information on government and community services including hearing services, respite services, youth services, tenancy and housing support, employment, aged care, education and training providers, mental health services, medical services, the toy library, Council services and much more. The expo runs from 9am to noon and entry is free. To book a stall phone 1300 79 49 29.
Showing their emu feather skirts are (back l-r) Kylyra Schiemer, Abina Page and Hannah Wondunna-Foley; (front) Kyrani Flanagan-Togo, Tulara Wondunna-Foley, Narmi Page, Torquasia Togo, Jedda Page and Diamond Rainbow. The children were taking part in the Emu Dreaming Workshops held at Scrub Hill, Hervey Bay over the recent school holidays. See Cultural theme inspires children, Page 2.
Fun in the sun was enjoyed by staff and students recently when Maryborough State High School held its first Duke of Edinburgh Award camp in a number of years. Eight students and four staff cycled from the Bruce Highway turn-off to Wongi Waterholes and back camping overnight at the waterholes. Students developed skills in cycling, camping and geocaching where co-ordinates of a hidden container were downloaded to a GPS from the geocaching website www.geocaching.com. The campers followed the co-ordinates to the cache at Wongi where various items could be swapped. The visit was written up in a notebook and later back at school students visited the website again and logged their find.

Alisha Pengelly has established her business, Proactive HR Solutions, in Hervey Bay.
Lifestyle lures HR guru to Fraser Coast In 2011, after spending 13 years in the Northern Territory and working with the local Aboriginal Communities of Arnhem Land it was time to resettle in Queensland and enjoy the beautiful lifestyle that the Fraser Coast has to offer. Having an extensive background in Human Resources (HR) with over 15 years’ experience both locally and internationally I decided to re-establish Proactive HR Solutions in Hervey Bay with a focus on providing a comprehensive HR consultancy service to the Fraser Coast. Proactive HR Solutions aims to provide advice, consultancy and advocacy services in the following key areas: • Employment Law (Common & Statutory). • Industrial Relations, including enterprise agreement development and implementation. • Performance Management. • Professional Development • HRM (strategic HRM, employee relations, employee orientation and induction) • Indigenous recruitment, Reconciliation Action Plans, Cross- Cultural Awareness) With the assistance of the NEIS program and Dawn Jensen, NEIS Coordinator, Sarina Russo Job Access, I completed my Certificate IV in Small Business Management in September 2012; and in October, Proactive HR Solutions was officially launched. The last twelve months has seen
my business expand its services throughout Queensland, NSW, NT and SA to a range of clients in the building and construction, clerical, civil and mechanical engineering, health, hospitality and retail sectors. I have also recently obtained online presence in the United States of America though the sharing of my online publications on various Human Resources and Industrial Relations subjects. As an Indigenous business owner I am also proud to have had the opportunity to form a strategic partnership with the Australian Human Rights Commission to support their campaign on Racism in a professional capacity. Throughout my other professional networks such linkedin and twitter I have also had an opportunity to consult and contribute to a range of other Indigenous issues. For the remainder of 2013 my current campaign is targeted at all 2013 year 12 graduates where I have devised a tailored package to assist graduates in their preparation to enter the workforce. This current package focuses on ensuring our graduates are job ready and aware of the statutory obligations surrounding the employment relationship. In 2014 I look forward to expanding the business further into the area of recruitment particularly indigenous recruitment and labour hire. - Alisha Pengelly

Cultural theme inspires children
Making emu feather skirts and traditional head dress kept little fingers busy over the school holidays when University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Fraser Coast and Koorawinga Vacation Care partnered to run workshops at Scrub Hill, Hervey Bay. USQ’s Indigenous Development Co-ordinator Linda Wondunna-Foley said the Emu Dreaming Workshops were aimed at encouraging young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to believe in themselves and their dreams. “When Butchulla Elder Auntie Irene McBride approached USQ to support a holiday program that combined the sharing of traditional cultural knowledge with motivational activities, USQ was keen to be involved.” USQ Fraser Coast Executive Manager Brett Langabeer said research indicates that children develop attitudes toward education and careers at an early age. “Being involved in school holiday cultural activities is a good opportunity for USQ to help children develop positive attitudes and aspirations.”

A literary wine and cheese evening with author, actor and scriptwriter Judy Nunn has been organised by the Fraser Coast Libraries for 6pm on Thursday 7 November at the USQ lecture theatre in Hervey Bay. While she is known to many as an actress, most notably for 13 years as Ailsa Stewart in Home and Away, Judy is a bestselling author and will be here to promote her book ‘Elianne’. The book, set in the Bundaberg cane fields, is a story of wealth, power, privilege and betrayal. This is a free event, but bookings are essential by contacting the library on 4197 4220.
Cameron’s story . . . Cameron Armstrong (left) came to EPIC Hervey Bay in July of 2012 with no skills, no direction and no idea what he wanted to do. What he did have was a pregnant girlfriend who was shortly due to give birth so he really wanted to find some work to support his new family. After discussions with his consultant, Cameron decided he would get some information regarding Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management as he liked the outdoors. EPIC agreed to consider this, but in the mean time put Cameron forward to do some work with the local Supa IGA whilst they were undergoing a refit. Cameron took as many hours as he could.
Bob Davies (front centre) and his crew with the latest graduates from the Hard Yakka training camp at Susan River.
www.issuu.com/globenews
However, he was not successful. He still had a passion for the outdoors and was really keen to undertake something outside. Cameron was referred to the STICK IT RURAL Agriculture Program with Brendan Condon in March of 2013 and took to the program like a duck to water. He excelled in every area and took on all and every challenge that Brendan presented him with. Cameron was the star pupil for that intake of the program and made massive head roads in confidence and in having a purpose and direction for his family and his life. In August this year Cameron, with the assistance of Brendan, was offered full-time employment working on a dairy farm in Conondale. He is thriving in the job. - Contributed
Once this job had finished Cameron continued to look for work and agreed to be put forward for more jobs. www.globenews.com.au Marketing: tonyb@globenews.com.au - Production: ians@globenews.com.au

USQ Fraser Coast Science and Engineering Challenge regional winning team, Aldridge State High School, achieved 2nd place in the state finals held recently in Townsville.
Accolades for Aldridge It wasn’t the gold but the second place podium finish by Maryborough’s Aldridge State High School students at the Queensland Super Challenge Series held in Townsville recently brought cheers from all those associated with the competition. “We were pipped at the post by St Joseph’s Nudgee and came second after leading almost to the end,” ASHS Head of Science Department Iain Carson said. Mr Carson said the students were very gracious in defeat yet thrilled they took out the second top spot in such a prestigious event.
The Queensland Super Challenge Series is recognised both in Australia and overseas for its success in raising the awareness of students wanting to pursue careers in the sciences and engineering. The ASHS students earned the right to compete in the series by winning the regional title in May at an event hosted by University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Fraser Coast, the Combined Rotary Clubs of Hervey Bay and the University of Newcastle. Mr Carson said ASHS had now competed in the Queensland Super Challenge Series finals three times in the past four years.
It was a busy week recently for St Mary’s Year 10s as they began the Set Plan Process. The week began with students participating in a program called Coaching Young People for Success The Career Coaching Module goes beyond traditional “best fit” career approaches to assist every young person design an inspiring Life and Career Pathway Plan that matches their strengths, interests, values and preferred lifestyle from the inside out. This was followed by a careers investigation day on the Wednesday. Eighteen guest speakers gave up some of their day to come and talk to students about their particular job, pathways to get there, what to expect in the workplace and what university life is like. Years 11 and 12 students informed the Year 10s on what to expect in the next two years.

It’s all in the science . . . Maryborough State High Physics, Chemistry and Biology students were given the choice of entering their EEI (Extended Experimental Investigation) in the 2013 Research competition. The students picked a topic to investigate, tested it and analysed and explained their results in a report. The competition was hosted by the University of the Sunshine Coast. Becky Macklin (left) and Brianna Ryan entered their Biology EEI’s on Worm farming. Sai Putha (centre) entered a Physics EEI on insulating properties of soil and a Biology EEI on enzymes. However, her career took off when she started working for the Jon Le Court hairdressing group. Jenny was able to complete her apprenticeship and went on to work for the company in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and New South Wales. During her 20 plus years in hairdressing, Jenny owned six businesses. Her experience gave her the confidence to start A’Jannafars Bad Hair Day in Lennox Street, Maryborough, about a year ago. Jenny says she has contributed to Maryborough business by offering a unique salon and by employing several people. “I wanted to create a different approach to hairdressing in Maryborough,’’ Jenny said. Goal-setting: vital for successful study Whether it is a business manager wanting to achieve increased sales, an athlete wanting to succeed in a competition or a high school student who dreams of their future career, one of the secrets of successful people is that they have clearly defined goals. Goal-setting is a skill. When it is utilised well, goal-setting can lead to motivation and success. It is ideal to start with a long term goal and work backwards. Long term goals can be difficult if a student is not sure which career path they would like to follow, but even in this situation, a more general goal, such as I plan to achieve an OP that allows me to go to university if I choose, can be helpful. Medium term goals can be easier to construct – they are often defined in periods of one or two years. Some students set these goals by determining the results to be achieved for a particular subject, others identify an organisational skill such as This year, I will complete a draft of each assignment at least one week before the due date.
Short term goals are essential, and can help students determine what they want to achieve in a week or even an individual study session. For a goal to help rather than hinder there are a few things to consider in the construction. Goals should be: Measurable: a clearly defined goal will identify what is to be achieved and when. Achievable: goals need to be realistic – too high a goal will lead to disappointment. However, at the same time, this is not an excuse to have goals that are unrealistically low. Conceivable: students need to believe they can achieve the desired outcome. Negative self-talk will only be selfdefeating. Adaptable: being able to change with new circumstances is essential to maintaining a sense of purpose. Education Rules!!! offers students assistance with the development of goal-setting and other skills essential for study success.

Business teachers Richard Weedon (seated) and left to right Kerry Pleml, Marie Morgan and Margaret Ford are ready to offer a new way of delivering training needs.
iConnect with your new Business Studies The Business Studies team at Wide Bay TAFE’s Maryborough campus can offer a whole new way of delivering your business training needs. “The new program provides greater support to all students whether they attend college or work externally, with all business programs now offered on line with support in place for individual students” said Margaret Ford, lead vocational teacher in the Business Studies Team. “Classes are programmed for those students who prefer a classroom environment with face-to-face contact. For those who prefer to organise study times to fit in with their own lifestyles, teacher contact is offered in a number of ways. For instance, the online component is available via ‘My. TAFE’. With the online resources available through My.Tafe
teachers use group forums and chats to interact with students. The features in My.Tafe also allow students to interact with each other. Margaret said they were using new technology known as iConnect where students used a videocam, headphones and a microphone to create a virtual classroom. The technology allows students to see and hear their teacher, ask questions directly and view on-screen demonstrations. Videoconferencing is another medium available that allows participants in different locations to see, hear and interact with each other just as they would in a classroom environment. To see how Wide Bay TAFE can help you iConnect with your future contact a customer care officer on 1300 656 188.
Is lack of year 10 holding you back? Most vocational education programs have a minimum entry level of Year 10 before commencing any new study. Year 10 is also needed if you are looking to join the Armed Forces, Police Service or to gain an apprenticeship or traineeship. A lot of people might think they can’t do any of these things because they haven’t passed Year 10 and having to return to school is too scary to even contemplate. But Wide Bay Institute of TAFE (WBIT) now has the answer. Teacher Fiona French says students enrolling in to the Access 10 program can now start anytime during the semester. WBIT has changed how students are accepted into the Access 10 program.
In the past students had to wait until the beginning of a new semester to start their studies. Study can be full time, completing all subjects to gain the full qualification or over a longer period, one subject at a time selecting only those subjects that you need, such as English or Maths. Adult learners wanting to join the armed forces often find they can work through their studies in record time, allowing them to enlist and start their training sooner. TAFE is also an excellent option for younger students who struggle to fit in to mainstream studies in school. Phone 1300 656 188 for more information.
Have you ever paid for a website to be developed and thought ‘If only I could do it myself?’. Wide Bay TAFE can help you with a new course on offer and you don’t have to be a computer genius to do it. Information Technology teacher Cameron Hughes said this six-week hands-on course will take students through the process of planning, developing and publishing their own website from start to finish. Using free Content Management System WordPress, the course will teach students basic principles of creating their own professional website without having to learn any coding,” Mr Hughes said.
Students will learn how to register a domain name and evaluate and select a web hosting service. You will learn how to set up and install WordPress on your web host and get the right look for your site using one of more than 2000 free templates available to download from WordPress or one of the many other sites offering both free and paid templates. Then you will learn how to add different types of content to your site like adding your own blog and how to review and select third party plug ins for functionality and appeal. Everything from adding image galleries, contact forms, calendars and surveys all the way through to adding shop-
ping cart functionality. Finally, once completed you will learn how to manage and keep your website updated and functioning. Students wanting to enrol in the program will need to have reliable internet access as well as basic computer skills such as internet searching, word processing and basic photo/image editing skills. The entire course is delivered online so that students can access the learning resources any time that fits their busy schedules and you will be able to interact with the teacher and other students through the scheduled web conferences. For more information phone 1300 656 188.

Great opportunity to explore heritage Considered to be one of Australia’s most attractive country courthouses, the Maryborough Court House is also the longest serving courthouse in Queensland. It has been in continuous use by the Supreme, District and Magistrates Courts since 1878. The historic building will be open to the public as part of Maryborough Open House on Saturday 26 October. The building holds a significant place in the city’s history, chairperson of the event’s organising committee, George Seymour, said. The courthouse was
constructed for about £7345 by local contractor John Thomas Annear. For more information
about Open House, see www. maryboroughopenhouse. com.au
The Maryborough Court House in 1890.
Register now for an opportunity to be a part of an archaeological dig at the original Maryborough town site. As a part of Maryborough Open House this year on Saturday, October 26, more than 25 historic buildings will be open to the public. This year, a two-day archaeological dig will also be conducted that weekend at the Original Maryborough town site. While everyone is welcome to come along and watch the dig, there are a limited number of spaces for people to join the excavation team. It is expected that there will be more people wanting to participate than there are available places, so a ballot may have to be undertaken. Open House organiser, George Seymour said that it was an exciting opportunity to assist in the better understanding of a highly significant site. “The site was abandoned 160 years ago and provides a rare window into a frontier town,” he said. Anyone wishing to assist in the archaeological dig should register their details with George Seymour on 0448 183 372 or email george.seymour@frasercoast.qld.gov.au by 18 October 2013.
Anzac Centenary grant now open
RIVERSIDE RIDES HIGHER! Riverside Christian College just keeps getting better and better, taking home a 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing at the Annual HPV Competition. They are overtaking past records and becoming a serious threat to their rivals. “Bring on the 2014 competition.’’
Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, has encouraged veteran’s organisations, schools, and community groups to apply for funding from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. “The Centenary of Anzac will be one of the most significant national periods of commemoration in our nation’s history,” Mr Truss said. “The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program supports local projects that commemorate the Centenary of Anzac. Projects may include special services and marches of veterans, re-enactments of recruiting marches, school education programs, refurbishing of memorials and honour boards, and the establishment of new places of commemoration and reflection.” “I encourage veterans organizations, schools and community groups to work together to plan for the Centenary of Anzac, and to consider how the sacrifices of Australia’s service men and women can be commemorated.” Mr Truss said up to $125,000 was available to support Centenary of Anzac projects in the Wide Bay electorate. A local Anzac Centenary Community Grants Committee will be formed to provide advice and recommendations on applications made by the local community. The applications and recommendations will then be submitted to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for further consideration. Applications close on 31 January 2014. Guidelines and application forms for the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program are available from the One Stop Shop Section at www.warrentruss.com or by phoning 1300 301 968. Further information is available from the website www.anzaccentenary.gov.au/ grants/. Prospective students who can benefit from an extra $1000 in their pockets are encouraged to think about a Phoenix Bursary when applying to study at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Fraser Coast. USQ Fraser Coast Executive Manager Brett Langabeer said potential students who start a bachelor degree at USQ in semester one next year are also eligible to apply for a $1000 bursary to help them with their studies. “The USQ Phoenix $1000 Bursary is relatively open with students needing to have accepted an offer to study at USQ in semester one, 2014, to enrol in a minimum of one course and tell us in 25 words or less how the bursary would make a difference to their success at USQ.” Bursary applications are now open and prospective students can find out more at usq. edu.au/phoenix-bursary. Round 1 closes October 31 and Round 2 runs from December 1 to January 31.

The Fraser Coast Scroll Saw Club was formed in 2006 by a group of locals with the aim of providing a venue to promote friendship, develop our skills, offer training to other interested people, share our interest and put something back into our community by providing articles for sale and then donating our profits to Guide Dogs Qld and Riding for Disabled, Hervey Bay. Thanks to the generosity of the Hervey Bay Boat Club who kindly let us use their premises on the corner of Pulgul and Kent Streets, Urangan for our workshop, we are going from strength to strength and at last have a venue to work and display or craft. Our workshop is open from 8.30am to noon on Thursday for sales and any interest people are always welcome. If this time is not convenient phone John McLeod on 4125 6776.

BEST EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT & TRAINING PTY LTD
• Certificate III in Hospitality trainees Steven (left), Trent and Daniel with trainer Sarah at BEST Employment, Support and Training. Trent had lots of barriers to employment, Mission Australia Maryborough helped him by showing him that there was a course with Best Employment, Support and Training. The first few weeks Trent had lots of problems with attendance and ‘getting used to’ learning again. With help from BEST Trainer Sarah Fulton, he has completed a Certificate III in Hospitality. Then working in partnership with Roger Wareing from Mission Australia, BEST was able to help Trent with work experience in the kitchen at The White Lion. Trent has now gained an Apprenticeship with the White Lion. The progression of this young person is nothing short of AMAZING ! said Managing Director, Mary Nield “ I am really proud of Trent and this shows that when partnering with other organisation’s a young person’s life can be changed for the better! BEST offers a wide range of courses including Business, Hospitality and RSG. • See below for a list of current courses.
