“EINSTEIN’S DREAMS” BY GLORIA REFRIGERI

Throughout my academic and professional careers, I have been searching for ways to make my creativity and strategic thinking collide. I highly value learning from others and often find myself connecting with people over our shared emotional relationships to space. I excel at planning and implementing projects with a great attention to detail while never losing sight of my conceptual and artistic intentions. I am interested in all the possible intersections between sustainability and interior design, in particular the instances in which social justice plays a role in the merging of these concepts. As someone who is extremely passionate about interior architecture and design in all its forms, I am eager to meet my next project.

DIFFUSE LIGHTNESS

Located in the Gramercy area in Manhattan, between 2nd Avenue and Gramercy Park, the given space is a pre-war building with a very distinctive brownstone look. Two families are trying to re-think the residential

paradigm of apartment living vs. private housing, and have determined that they cannot afford to buy a single-family residence in the current NYC market, so they have decided to pool their resources and buy a property together.

The design approach for the interior, is to fill the space with light canalized from a central internal courtyard, and diffuse it through a series of openings, glasses and reflective and translucent surfaces that allow light to flow freely horizontally and vertically throughout the entire levels of structure, from out to inside.

DESIGN STRATEGY

The design approach for the interior, is to fill the space with light canalized from a central internal courtyard, and diffuse it through a series of openings, glasses and reflective and translucent surfaces that allow light to flow freely horizontally

and vertically throughout the entire levels of structure, from out to inside. The aim is to generate lightness, create a meditative quality shared focal point, that functions not only as light source but also able to connect people and nature.

A subtle, soft, diffuse omnidirectional glow will remain dim enough for accent lighting to stand out.

Strong constrast accent lighting will be used to highlight natural materials surfaces

A ceiling based lighting system that has a sparkle effect intends to give the space an ethereal atmosphere.

3 EXCEEDING BOUNDARIES THROUGH LIGHT

Noguchi studio is conceived as an integral part of the museum experience, where both identities are determined by the sensorial contact with the artwork displayed and the nature. “Harmonic Contrast” and “Directional Angles”, derived from the study of Noguchi’ssculptures, conceptually inform the design of the display system, while the spatial strategy focuses on flexibility, multifunctionality, and coexistence of multiple programs.

Akari light sculptures guide the visitors through the space. The distinction between retail, art exhibition, and theatrical performance is blurred as well as the concepts of inside and outside.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Noguchi has long shuttled both physically and philosophically between the Orient and the West. Directionality in angles is explored using 30, 45 and 90 degree and he use of light.

“To break away is very important to me; I shift very rapidly because that is the only way I can get away from myself. You have to escape that trap which limits your life”.

4 KULTURHUSET INDRE BY

PROJECT 100% HANDMADE

The culture house concept is deeply rooted in Danish community and can be described as Citizen’s House that is available to a city or local population that offers cultural, association and leisure facilities. Established by the municipality of Copenhagen in an old tramcar barn from 1923, “Kulturhuset “is a food culture house in Indre By (Inner City). This project aims to create a social space that can construct bridges between people and different food cultures. The interior architecture elements such as the roof garden, the vertical farm connected to the stairs and the kitchens, become the support for a livable flow of movement and deeper human relationships. LONGITUDINAL

ELEVATION

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The dramatic inclination of the roof and vertical dwelling encourage people to make an effort on climbing the stairs, farming and actively participate in the architecture. Inspired by Alvaro Alto work, the lightwell designed on the thicker inclined roof side, induce the light to expand to the inside, before casting on the stairs and bouncing from the opposite wall.

Oblique funtion = fluidity of movement. Deeper human relationship. People activily partecipate in the architecture fluidity and migration = Open the boundaries.

ADAPTIVE RE-USE

Kulturhuset is an example of adaptive reuse. The new structure of the food culture house is found in an old tramcar barn in the heart of Copenhagen. The relationship between the old and new structure follows the principle of superimposition.

TYPE OF PROJECT: Office

LOCATION: New York

The sculptural character of the interior gives the office a modern and contemporary aesthetic. The active, open space solution is suitable for a fluid program and offers recreational opportunities as well as an invitation to collaborate or be utilized as an event space.

The use of uniform material enforces the perception of a continuous ensemble. There are a few indoor gardens to improve employee health by helping them de-stress and by providing healthier air to breath.

5 SUSTAINABLE FLUCTUATION

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

RESILIENT LANDSCAPE

urban costal areas are increasily subject to extreme weather. flooding and sea level rise. working with nature to create multi-layered defenses provides several co-benefits.

Resilient = able to recoil, spring back into shape (flexible) = able to withstand, to recover quickly from difficult conditions (strong)
