presents… “It’s Our CommUNITY” Art Show & K thru 12th Art Contest In recognition of National Bully Prevention Month

For Immediate Release: August 8th, 2014 QC United and the Pete the Purple Bull Unity Campaign invite you to participate in the “It’s Our CommUNITY” art invitational and art show! This includes a public call for art, an exhibition at a community event, an art contest with prizes and an Online Gallery. 

Open call starts August 11th, 2014 until October 3rd, 2014 for in-hand artwork and

Sizes 5x7, 8x10 or 8x11-1/2, and 11 x 17 accepted. Drawings, sketches, marker colored, watercolors, photography and non-flaking other paints accepted. If using oil pastels or charcoal, please spray for non-smearing results before submission.

1st and 2nd place awards will be given for original in-hand artwork in the following school categories: K thru 2nd , 3rd thru 5th, 6th thru 8th and 9th thru 12th All will be recognized on stage at Pete’s Party and on Pete’s website & Facebook page. Each 1st place prize winner will receive a pizza party for 30 people and a collection of art supplies for their school.

QC United in collaboration with the Eco Arts Council, will exhibit originals at “Pete's Awesome CommUNITY Party” and then donate them to the EACQC Fourth Annual Papergirl Quad Cities project in 2015. The digital images will be submitted to the International BIG DRAW online gallery resulting in the creation of the “It's Our CommUNITY” online gallery album and video!

Pete’s Awesome CommUNITY Party recognizes National Bullying Prevention Month and celebrates the positive efforts of many to ensure the Quad Cities is a friendly and welcoming place to live, learn, work and play! Pete the Purple Bull is a big cuddly mascot who is leading the Unity Year-Round Campaign and he especially wants to rid the World of “Bullying”. The event & art show is Sunday, October 12, 2014. From 1:00 – 5:00 pm at the Quad Cities Waterfront Convention Center located at 2021 State Street in Bettendorf, Iowa. Children, families and all community members can enjoy games, performances, informational booths, prizes and much more! SOME TIPS for participating in the “It's Our CommUNITY” Art & Writing Contest: GET CREATIVE with your writing and artwork. Let your words & art be a message: By Considering your home, neighborhood, school and/or work place and the actions and images that represent respect, diversity, tolerance, friendship, kindness, compassion, love and good citizenship. What does it feel like to be in a place where you are accepted and appreciated for just being you? GET THINKING about different ideas to draw and write about: By observing what’s around you, what could make your home, school, work or neighborhood a more welcoming and friendly place? Remember small steps can add up to make a big difference and we want to know your ideas that support friendship, unity and good citizenship. Draw it. Write it. GET ACTIVE. If you need inspiration, get out and get busy! By getting outside and enjoying nature and/or doing good deeds such as caring for the environment (cleaning a neighborhood or school grounds, helping with a community garden) or helping a neighbor, family member, church member, someone at school or anyone. GET UPLOADING. Have your school, club, home-school group, youth group, and or civic/community group register and submit artwork and writings online. All works can be uploaded onto our “It’s Our CommUNITY” Online Gallery Album. Become part of a video to be showcased on other social media outlets. Closing date is October 10, 2014. To celebrate Bullying Prevention Month & to spread a positive message through your art and writing, we encourage you to make copies of your original work that you submit to our art and/or writing contest and donate the copies to your school, your local library, businesses or even to friends or family members. presents… “It’s Our CommUNITY Writing Contest” for K thru 12th grade students In recognition of National Bully Prevention Month For Immediate Release: QC United and the Pete the Purple Bull Unity Campaign invite you to participate in the “It’s Our CommUNITY” Writing Contest! Students are asked to submit original stories, poems or essays, according to their skill level, for the writing contest. 1st and 2nd place awards will be given in each age category and selected writings will be included in an Online Gallery of diverse writings that support the idea of a safe, welcoming place to learn, live or work.

Writings are accepted starting August 11th, 2014 until October 3rd, 2014 for in-hand

writings and online submissions. QC United, in collaboration with the Eco Arts Council will exhibit selected original writings on a big screen at “Pete's Awesome CommUNITY Party”. The selected writings will become part of the “It's Our CommUNITY” online gallery album and video! 1st and 2nd place awards will be given in the following school categories: K thru 2nd, 3rd thru 5th, 6th thru 8th and 9th thru 12th. All winners will be recognized on stage at Pete’s Party and on Pete’s website & Facebook page. For all K thru 8th grade participants, each 1st place prize winner will receive a pizza party for 30 people and a collection of books for their classroom or school library. 

K thru 5th: Students are asked to share their ideas about Pete the Purple Bull. Pete has come to the Human World from a very friendly place called Harmony Farms because he wants to help make “Bullying” disappear. Please answer one or more of these questions: What could you do to help Pete? Why does Pete think it’s important to get rid of Bullying? What do you think Harmony Farms is like? It’s OK to get help from grown-ups to put the words on paper and pictures can be included to support the story. There are no minimum/maximum word requirements. The thoughts put on paper must be the original thoughts shared by the student.

6th thru 8th: October is National Bully Awareness Month. All over the country, people are sharing their experiences and ideas about Bullying and are finding ways to make the world safe and welcoming for everyone. Please write a story, essay or poem that helps people understand the pain caused by Bullying and share your ideas about what kids, schools, grown-ups and/or communities can do to help.

9th thru 12th: As high school students, you can serve as role models and you have the power to positively impact another person’s life, change a group for the better and even change the World. Please submit a story, essay or poem that describes how a person can make a difference for the better and why contributing in this way is important. Remember that what seems to be a small contribution can have huge results. The 1st place winner will receive a $200 scholarship for college and a Pizza party for 30 people.
