EDITOR’S LETTER
CONTRIBUTOR’S CORNER
When Rathnelly Group Media, publisher of business-lifestyle publication Bay Street Bull, thought about what they’d call their second foray into the market, GLORY was the obvious winner. After all, it embodies everything we wanted this sport, health and wellness media company to be. An outlier. A uplifter. A collection of triumphs. A rare birth story in a series of editorial deaths. is, of course, is just a teaser: an eight-page preview of what’s to come, as we plan our two inaugural issues; the Spring Photo: Francisco Garcia Champions Issue and the Fall Brain and Body Issue. Here is a collection of what you’ll see in our future issues—profiles on athletes like you’ve never read before, the hottest places to workout, what’s trending in health. Take our “Opener” on Chris Boucher, a 26-year-old Montrealer who climbed his way from the G League to a full NBA contract with the Toronto Raptors. Talk about the Canadian dream...one that’s filled with grit, perseverance, and a positive attitude. Elsewhere in the pages, why you should try boxercise (I’m a BOLO regular, and can attest to it being cathartic), and collagen powders (undoubtedly the new-age vitamin C). It made sense for us to have Tessa Virtue on the cover of this GLORY teasC h r i s t i n a G o n za l e s er, too. At 29, Virtue is at E D I TO R - I N - C H I E F a crossroads. e competi@X T I N A _ G O N Z A L E S tive part of her life is ending, and therein lies a new beginning. On set, Virtue was a ray of light, deserving of every “Canada’s sweetheart” cliché placed on her. It amazed me that someone so bogged down by professional and athletic commitments replies to every press email directly. (Yes, I have access to Virtue’s inbox.) What else can I say about her? She’s open and optimistic about the future. Just like we are.

TRENDY WORKOUTS YOU’RE LOVING AT THE MINUTE?
I don’t really take to trendy workouts — hot yoga is my ride or die. HOW DO YOU DETOX?
Nothing makes me feel more refreshed and free than excursions to Northern Ontario where a Finnish steam followed by a chilly dip in Lake Superior are a daily practice. DO YOU USE ANY APPS TO HELP YOU BALANCE WORK AND LIFE?
I’ve tried to get into Headspace, but my track record with the meditation app is an area that needs improvement.

HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?
I try to meditate every morning. Sometimes it feels like the most important part of my day, other times it feels like a total waste of 10 minutes.
HOW DO YOU DE-STRESS?
I put on an audio book or a podcast I’m interested in and go out for a really slow—almost lazy—jog.
WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT, GO-TO WORKOUT?
I’ve started boxing with a trainer. There’s a lot of technique and strategy to learn; I love activities that keep my brain engaged enough to distract me from how hard my body’s working.
On the cover: Adidas sports bra, $60; Code Vitesse top, $94; Veronica Beard pants, $644, at Nordstrom; Tiffany & Co. earrings, $2250, and bracelet, $2600; Marc Cain sandals, $300.
What is GLORY? Is it magnificence? A great feat or achievement? A deep sense of fulfillment or pleasure in what you do?

Millionaire Montrealer and Toronto Raptors forward Chris Boucher, also known as “Slimmduck,” takes the path less travelled W R I T T E N BY
R ay B a l a T h e o La m a r
I L LU S T R AT I O N
“When I got the call I was playing Call of Duty with my brother,” says Toronto Raptors forward Chris Boucher. “It was a happy moment for me—I didn’t really take it in until I signed the papers though.” at call officially made Boucher a member of the Raptors organization for the next two years. When Boucher talks about that career-defining phone call, and the moments immediately after, he shows little outward emotion. After all, the path that led him to this point was the path less travelled. Scotiabank Arena is a far cry from Montreal’s St-Hubert, a chain of rotisserie chicken joints, where, as a teenager, Boucher used to work as a part-time cook and dishwasher. Boucher and his mother, Mary MacVane, immigrated to Canada from Saint Lucia when Boucher was just four years old. ey came to join his Quebecois father Jean-Guy, who MacVane met when she was working in the city before Boucher was born. When he was nine years old, Boucher’s parents divorced. At 15, he moved in with his father, but their relationship was fraught with conflict. Boucher, who didn’t exert himself at school, dropped out. It was a decision his father couldn’t get behind. But there was always basketball. And whenever Boucher could, he would play. In 2012, Boucher was spotted at a local Montreal tournament by the coaches of the now-defunct basketball school Alma Academy. At Alma, Boucher’s game improved, and NCAA schools were interested, but his academics weren’t up to par. us, another detour: junior college at Northwest College in Wyoming, where Boucher would be named the 2015 NJCAA Player of the Year. And then the colleges came knocking. Boucher entered the
University of Oregon and began playing for the Ducks (hence the “Slimmduck” nickname), where he became an instant success. But so were his teammates—Tyler Dorsey, Jordan Bell, and fellow Canadian Dillon Brooks, all of whom were drafted to the NBA in 2017. In 2018, during his senior year, Boucher was well on track to join his peers in the NBA until he suffered a torn ACL in the NCAA PAC-12 tournament. Without the spotlight of March Madness, Boucher faced another major roadblock to his dream of entering the world’s best league. While Boucher was recovering from his injury, the Golden State Warriors signed him to a two-way contract, which was waived in June of 2018. But he was soon scooped up by the Raptors, who saw Boucher’s potential. At the start of the 20182019 season Boucher was on a two-way contract with Toronto’s G-League affiliate, Raptors 905. He tore up the G League to the tune of nearly 27 points, 11 rebounds and a league high of 4.2 blocks per game in 25 contests. Boucher became a regular in highlight reels for his emphatic blocks and vicious dunks. In February, the team handed Boucher a full-time NBA contract, a decision that, Boucher says, surprised him. Even though Boucher’s found a home with the Raptors, he’s staying grounded. “I’ve been through lots of ups and downs so now I stay level-headed,” Boucher says. “It’s easy to say that you’re in the league, but making it is one thing, and staying in it is another...I’ve showed that I’m capable.”

Sun’s out and we’re California dreamin’. W R I T T E N BY
Tr u c N g u ye n
The most populous American state has always enjoyed outsized cultural sway globally. In spring 2019, the Golden State is again trending — its central role in the entertainment industries, green-leaning ethos, and beautiful beaches complement and influence the current zeitgeist. California-inspired looks appeared on the runway at international labels such as Michael Kors and BOSS, and we can’t get enough of the laid-back, surf-inflected lifestyle that is so central to the (Southern) California dream. Sun, surf, and sand: we can all use more of these simple pleasures in our lives.

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in our bodies—so why are supplements so popular? W R I T T E N BY
A l ex a n d ra D o n a l d s o n
“Collagen is the most abundant source of protein in our body and is essential in providing structure to our skin, hair, nails, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones,” says Waterloo-based nutritionist Corina Crysler. Translation? Collagen helps provide flexibility and strength in your muscles and tendons, firmness and elasticity in your skin, and amino acids for your gut. But like most things, collagen wanes thanks to the hard-hitting combo of outside aggressors and aging. In your 20s, collagen in the body begins to decrease, and by the time you hit 40, collagen depletes faster than your body can replace it. “Smoking, sugar, and ultraviolet light affect collagen,” says Dr. Mark Lupin, a Victoria-based dermatologist. Stress, a poor diet, and dehydration also contribute to the reduction of collagen. e fix? A collagen supplement. Since it’s a large protein, collagen isn’t readily absorbed unless it’s been broken down into smaller amino acids and peptides, so opt for a powder formula that’s hydrolyzed. Crysler suggests drinking your collagen mix with water before a meal to help aid digestion. And while it doesn’t matter whether you take your collagen supplement before every single meal, consistency is key.

Tessa Virtue’s Olympic-sized schedule didn’t have space for the minutiae of everyday life. Take university, for example, an institution most 19-year-olds take for granted. Virtue, who is completing her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Windsor, is doing it later in life. “I’m happiest when I have a purpose, and I’m bettering myself in something,” Virtue says. “Whether I’m doing my homework, competing in the Olympics, or taking out the garbage—I want to do everything to the very best of my ability.” Since Virtue isn’t training for the competitions anymore, (her and longtime ice partner Scott Moir haven’t officially retired), she could’ve decamped on lengthy beach sabbatical. Instead, she can’t sit still. “I find that one of my greatest thrills right now is

negotiating a contract,” Virtue jokes. With brands like Nivea, Adidas and BonLook lining up, and a recent induction to Canada’s Walk of Fame, there’s no shortage of marketing teams looking to align themselves with Canada’s number one millennial influencer. Yet on social media, Virtue has remained decidedly wholesome. It’s a stark contrast to Instagram’s steady flow of over-sexualized body types, from larger-than-real-life bums to Victoria Secret legs to plumped lips. Isn’t it easier to succumb to what’s now supposed to be the norm? Nah. “It’s important to me that young girls have someone to look up to that’s healthy,” Tessa says. “It comes down to being kind to ourselves, and to our bodies; embracing all the quirks that make us unique and different, and realizing that being ‘fit’ is not one single thing.” In 10 years what will we see of Tessa Virtue? I ask. She doesn’t want to cling to her identity as an ice dancer, she says. “I hope I’m making an impact socially, and changing the conversation, you know... into something meaningful and substantial and inspiring.”

Fitness fads come, fitness fads go. Bowflex? Tae Bo? Remember them? In the last few years, sophisticated boxing studios have popped up across the continent and amassed dedicated followings amongst boutique fitness buffs. Only here’s the catch: it isn’t going to be a short-lived craze. is revival is here to stay. Boxing integrates the most effective fitness trends, from functional training and intervals to total-body routines. Boxing involves near-constant movement: It lengthens muscles, rather than bulk them up; it increases aerobic and anaerobic capacity; it strengthens, tones and sharpens you physically and mentally. Boxing is perhaps the purest expression of athleticism—and it can put you in the best shape of your life.
