A Note from the Artistic Director Welcome to STEEL MAGNOLIAS! As we were planting the seeds of our 2019-20 season here at Studio Tenn, we knew we wanted to honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Ratified by Congress on Aug. 18, 1920, the amendment granted women the right to vote. We couldn’t think of a better way to mark this historic occasion than by cultivating a season that celebrates female characters and entertainers. This past December, you met a girl named Cinderella, who refused to let her dreams of a better life be suppressed by her bullying family. Now we’re harvesting STEEL MAGNOLIAS, Robert Harling’s Southern-fried masterpiece that’s full of heart, hilarity, heartache and hairspray. Lots and lots of hairspray. The women who populate Truvy’s beauty salon aren’t just there to gossip and get their roots touched up, they are there in search of something deeper: friendship. Beneath the sometimes acerbic banter is a care and compassion for one another that runs deep. By helping each other cope with both love and loss, these women show themselves to be as strong as they are delicate. That combination has long fascinated Harling. “My mother would always say to handle magnolia blossoms carefully because they bruise so easily,” he told Country Living in 2017. “You think of this flower that is so delicate and has to be handled with care, but is actually made of much stronger stuff.” Next month, from March 26 to 29, we’re going to raise the roof of the Franklin Theatre when we honor a singer who was made of some pretty strong stuff: the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin. Dubbed The Aretha Legacy, this tribute is going to feature wall-to-wall hits, from Respect to Freeway of Love. Then it’s back here to the Jamison as we wrap things up May 8 to 24 with 9 to 5: The Musical. Based on the hit 1980 movie starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton, this showfollows three co-workers who are pushed to the boiling point by their sexist, egotistical, lying boss. Kelsie Louise Craig is excited to make her Studio Tenn debut with STEEL MAGNOLIAS. She is originally from Arkansas where she studied English and Theater at The University of Central Arkansas. While in Arkansas she hosted 109 episodes of “The Channel 5 Kids Club.” It was set in space. Yes there were cardboard robots and a talking dog. Since moving to Nashville in 2011 she has taught at Centennial Performing Art Studios as well as Nashville Children’s Theatre. You can see her at Third Coast Comedy Club the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month in their family friendly kids shows at 10 am. Catch her as “Trudy” in Aleta Myles Judith Speaks web series coming out in 2020! Kelsie is grateful for the opportunity to bring Annelle to the stage. A BROADWAY SPOTLIGHT LISSA DEGUZMAN Last seen on the Studio Tenn stage as Maria in WEST SIDE STORY, Lissa deGuzman can now be seen in the national tour of ALADDIN as Jasmine. Lissa recently made her Broadway debut in KING KONG as a member of the ensemble and as the Ann understudy. You have seen her on the Studio Tenn stage in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, THE WIZARD OF OZ and LES MISÉRABLES. Born and raised in Wauwatosa, WI, Lissa graduated from Belmont University with a BFA in Musical Theatre. While at Belmont University, Lissa auditioned for Studio Tenn and began her journey into professional theater. We are proud to call her a Studio Tenn alum.

Studio Tenn has an official partnership with the Belmont University Musical Theatre program, providing professional training for students seeking a career in theatre. Over 80 students from Belmont University and other area universities have performed on our stage, and have gone on to perform in Hamilton in Chicago, The Legacies on CW, National Tour of ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE and AMAZING GRACE, among others.
CREATIVE TEAM PATRICK CASSIDY Artistic Director
Patrick Cassidy is the son of Oscar winner Shirley Jones and Tony winner Jack Cassidy. Patrick comes to Studio Tenn from Southern California, where he was artistic director of the regional theater company 5-Star Theatricals. He produced a string of acclaimed productions there, including THE MUSIC MAN starring Adam Pascal (RENT) as Harold Hill and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST with Susan Egan reprising her Tony-nominated role as Belle. His directing resume includes THE MUSIC MAN at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and OHKLAHOMA! at Pittsburgh Playhouse. At Las Vegas’ Wynn Hotel, he was resident director of SHOWSTOPPERS and acting coach for LE RÊVE.” Patrick’s long history on Broadway includes starring roles in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, LEADER OF THE PACK, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and Elton John’s AIDA. When he and his mom joined the revival of 42ND STREET, they became the first mother and son to ever star together in a Broadway show. Off-Broadway, he originated the role of the Balladeer in Stephen Sondheim’s ASSASSINS. On TV, Patrick starred with Alec Baldwin in the miniseries DRESS GRAY, filled Patrick Swayze’s dancing shoes in DIRTY DANCING and guested on ER, SMALLVILLE, CSI: MIAMI, K.C. UNDERCOVER and LAW & ORDER: SVU. The ABC Family series “RUBY & THE ROCKITS gave Patrick a chance to work with his brothers: David was his co-star, Shaun was the creator and Ryan was set decorator. On the big screen, his most cherished project is LONGTIME COMPANION, the groundbreaking drama that was the first to depict the emotional toll of the AIDS crisis. Patrick and his wife of 25 years, choreographer/dance teacher Melissa Hurley Cassidy, have two sons: Cole, a mechanical engineer/guitarist in Irvine, Calif., and Jack, a singer-songwriter (and Franklin resident) signed to Nashville’s Fair Trade Services label.
TODD MORGAN

Todd Morgan joined Studio Tenn in September of 2017 with a plethora of experience and expertise. After earning his B.S. in Musical Theatre at Lees-McRae College, Morgan founded the North Carolina Stage Ensemble where he oversaw the production of seventeen classic musicals for various theatrical venues. Such productions include LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE, FOREVER PLAID and THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES. He later earned his M.F.A. in Performing Arts Management from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts which included an internship at the prestigious Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. Morgan would go on to serve as the theater programming coordinator for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where he worked on several Broadway bound productions including LITTLE DANCER, starring Tyler Peck and Boyd Gaines, as well as the newly revised production of SIDE SHOW which transferred to Broadway in the fall of 2014. Morgan also had the pleasure to facilitate cabaret performances featuring artists such as Mandy Patinkin, Patti LuPone, Judy Kuhn, Tommy Tune, Megan Hilty, Brian D’Arcy James and Barbara Cook. Morgan later became the Management Associate for the Tony Award-winning Signature theatre in Arlington, VA., Signature is a prominent home for the development and production of new and innovative works of musical theatre. Todd is accompanied by his wife Donna and their daughters, Molly and Allyssa.

Benji Kern currently serves as the associate artistic director for Studio Tenn Theatre Company. Previously, he served as the associate producer and interim artistic director helping to mount productions including THE GLEN CAMPBELL LEGACY at The Ryman Auditorium and GREASE with American Idols Melinda Doolittle, Diana DeGarmo, and Ace Young. Benji got his start at the Lortel Winning Theater, Primary Stages, where he served as the artistic assistant and produced the readings and workshops of the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer’s Group. There he also served as the assistant director for Jonathan Tollin, Secrets of the Trade with John Glover and The Morini Stradd starring Mary Beth Peil. At Studio Tenn Benji has helped to produce new plays and workshops of FRANKENSTEIN (Pete Peterson,) THE GREAT YAWNING (Cheri Magid,) WONDER WOMAN (Greg Becker,) and TRAUMA QUEEN (Crystal Bowersox and Willy Holtzman.) In addition, he launched the Studio Tenn internship program, educational classes, and is proud to continue engaging the Franklin community and Middle Tennessee in the arts programming. Benji serves as an adjudicator for The Jimmy Awards through TPAC. Prior to move to Nashville, Benji was a equity stage manager, select credits include: EVITA (Eden Espinosa and Ben Crawford, STUDIO TENN) DAMN YANKEES (Carson Kressly, OGUNQUIT PLAYHOUSE) the national tour of I LOVE LUCY, and industrial work at Lincoln Center.
BEKI BAKER Director
Beki Baker’s directing credits include the Nashville Repertory Theatre’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL as well as TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING A POEM, SHOWING, PATTERN SEEKING ANIMALS, THE VERY LAST WISHES OF GRANDPA JOE and THE SECOND AVENUE SUBWAY for their Ingram New Works Festival. Beki also directed JULIUS CAESAR (starring Eddie George) and SHAKESPEARE’S CASE for the Nashville Shakespeare Festival. Blackbird Theater Company credits include MAN AND SUPERMAN and THE CRUCIBLE. She directed Eden Espinosa in TARZAN for the National Association for Music Education as well as Tony Award nominee Elizabeth A. Davis in Tablerock Repertory Theatre’s TOMORROW. Beki is Chair of Theatre at Lipscomb University where she’s directed eight shows. She holds an M.F.A. in Directing from Baylor University. All my love to Scott and our children. Ms. Biggerstaff is thrilled to be working with Studio Tenn and Beki Baker this season on STEEL MAGNOLIAS. She is a senior Theatre: Directing and Acting double major at Lipscomb University. This past fall, Anna had her directorial debut with the 2nd Theatre Company directing SIGNIFICANT OTHER by Joshua Harmon. While directing is her passion, Anna loves stage management as well and was the stage manager for SILENT SKY and BRIGHT STAR at Lipscomb University. You can find Anna when she is not in the theatre cackling with her friends or watching the Nashville Predators. She wants to give a big thanks to Beki Baker for taking her under her wing for this amazing project. She also wants to thank all those that cultivate her passion for theatre. Enjoy the show!

Will Butler is a professional scenic designer and teacher at Hillsboro High School. A graduate of Belmont University, his passion for scenic and production design comes from marrying his eye for interior design to his love of theatre. To that end, he works tirelessly to ensure that he delivers conceptually strong sets with an acute eye to detail. Some of his favorite designs include HAIRSPRAY (Winner “Best Set”; Spotlight Awards), GODSPELL (Winner “Best Show” and “Best Overall Design Concept”; Spotlight Awards), INTO THE WOODS (Winner “Best Overall Design Concept”; Spotlight Awards), BILOXI BLUES (Belmont University and Hillsboro Players), THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE (Hillsboro Players), and ROCK OF AGES (Winner “Best Scenic Design” and “Outstanding Design Concept”; Spotlight Awards). MITCH WHITE
Technical Director
A master-level craftsman and experienced production professional, Mitch White makes Studio Tenn’s custom stage designs into reality with surgical precision and artistic ingenuity. White segued into professional theatre after a 25-year career in the music industry working in management, artist development, touring, marketing and promotion with numerous performers including Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Toby Mac, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow and more. He was first introduced to Studio Tenn when his wife Susannah was cast in the company’s inaugural season opener HELLO, DOLLY!. He began building sets and soon realized he’d found his perfect niche: combining his entertainment industry and construction experience along with his organizational and creative skills. White has served as Technical Director and Set Co-designer for all of Studio Tenn’s productions since 2011. Other theatre credits include productions by Tennessee Repertory Theatre and Belmont University. Additionally, White is commissioned to design and produce custom pieces and installations by bands, artists and venues including the Nashville Public Library and the Frist Museum.
ROBERT HELVEY
Assistant Technical Director
Robert Helvey has lived and worked all around the country and world. He moved to Nashville to pursue a BFA in Theater Production Design at Belmont University, where he was given many opportunities to design for student productions, including five scenic and twelve lighting designs. He also worked closely with Belmont’s Technical Director to build the sets and run the workshop, and was fortunate enough to study abroad at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He joined the Studio Tenn team in 2013 building sets and setting up lighting for productions. During summers off school, he worked with Wolf Trap Opera near Washington D.C. and Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico. After graduation in 2017, he returned full-time as the Assistant Technical Director for Studio Tenn, and is excited to get back into designing. He is thankful for the opportunities Nashville has given him, and is honored to serve his community and nation as a member of the Tennessee Air National Guard.

Kaitlin Barnett graduated from Belmont University with a B.S. in Audio Engineering. She is excited to be back with Studio Tenn as a sound designer. Costume Designer
Trish Clark is delighted to make her debut for Studio Tenn, designing costumes for STEEL MAGNOLIAS. Her costume design work, however, is not exactly new to Middle Tennessee audiences. Trish and her husband Rick live in Murfreesboro, where she now works as the Costume Coordinator for Middle Tennessee State University’s Theatre and Dance Department. She teaches courses in stage make-up, costume technology and wig styling. Before joining the faculty at MTSU, Trish was the Resident Costume Designer at Tennessee Repertory Theatre, now Nashville Repertory Theatre, designing costumes for over 50 productions there. She has guest designed at The Nashville Shakespeare Festival, Nashville Children’s Theatre, Tennessee Shakespeare Theatre, The Tennessee Governor’s School for The Arts, Arkansas Repertory Theater and Theater Squared. Working in a recording industry town has provided her the opportunity to cross-over and work in that world as well. Ms. Clark has designed and built stage wear for music artists, designed music videos, managed costume builds for national concert tours and counts among her private clients many a-list music artists.

Hair and Wig Designer
Tori, a middle Tennessee native, is excited to make their professional debut at Studio Tenn. Tori, a soon to be graduate from Middle Tennessee State University, will be earning a theatre degree with a focus in both musical theatre performance and makeup and wig design. While at MTSU they designed KISS ME KATE (wigs), NOISES OFF (makeup and hair), A MIDSUMMERS NIGHT’S DREAM (assistant makeup), and DIDO AND AENEAS (makeup).
ROBERT HARLING Author
Robert Harling made his directorial debut with “The Evening Star” for Paramount, which he also wrote for the screen based on Larry McMurty’s novel. “The Evening Star” reunited Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson and co-stars Juliette Lewis, Bill Paxton, Scott Wolf, Miranda Richardson, and Marion Ross. “The Evening Star” is the continuation of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of our time, “Terms of Endearment.” Before launching a successful stage and screenwriting career, Robert graduated from Tulane University School of Law, but instead of taking the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voiceovers and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play STEEL MAGNOLIAS, which was based on events from his personal life. STEEL MAGNOLIAS continues to thrive in theatrical productions throughout the world. Immediately bridging a career from stage to screen, Harling adapted his original play into the popular film of the same title, which starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and Daryl Hannah. Over the years, Mr. Harling has become a much sought-after screenwriter: other credits, to name a few, include “Soapdish,” which was based on Harling’s acting experience and starred Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert Downey Jr., and “FIRST WIVES CLUB” for Paramount, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton.

PROGRAMMING The Salon by Pipeline-Collective
The Salon is a biweekly gathering of playwrights, directors, and actors to shape theatrical works-inprogress curated by Pipeline-Collective’s Producing Artistic Directors David Ian Lee and Karen Sternberg, along with Studio Tenn’s Associate Artistic Director Benji Kern. Each three-hour session is designed to bring together all collaborators, exploring new relationships and furthering the development of new, visceral theatrical work. At The Salon, playwrights can maintain the momentum of their writing and hear pages aloud at regular intervals – a critical component of new play development – while directors and actors can work “on their feet,” investigating new texts and partnerships in a model more accommodating than the constraints of an audition or the product-based needs of a rehearsal hall.
