CONFERRING THE ENTERED APPRENTICE DEGREE Opening Lodge The hour for opening the Lodge having arrived, the WM takes his station in the East and covers. Wardens columns are: Up in the South; Down in the West. WM:

(o) Brethren, any who have not signed the attendance register are directed to do so now. (Pauses to allow directed action.)

WM:

(o) Brethren, be clothed and seated. Officers assume your Jewels and stations. Brother JD (o), (JD rises) inform the Tyler that I am about to open a Lodge of EAs. Invite in all EAs, FCs, and MMs, if properly clad, and close the door.

JD:

(JD takes rod, goes to outer door which is open.) Brother Tyler, the WM is about to open a Lodge of EAs. All EAs, FCs, and MMs are invited to attend if properly clothed and vouched for. (Tyler invites in all EAs, FCs and MMs while observing that they are properly clad. JD closes door, returns to station and stands with rod in hand.)

WM:

(While the JD is attending to the above.) Brethren, I am about to open a Lodge of EAs and shall require your assistance and attention.

SW:

(ooo) Brother Sr. and Jr. Deacons, approach the West. (Deacons take rods and march to the SW’s station, arriving in unison.)

SW:

Communicate to me, in a whisper, the word of an EA. (JD whispers the pass to the SD and he to the SW.)

SW:

Now demand it with the same caution of the Brethren on the right and left, except the JW in the South, and communicate it to the WM in the East. (All remain standing. Deacons proceed to the East, each on his respective side of the Lodge, receiving the word from all present, except the JW. All but the WM come down on the floor to communicate the word).

Challenging If there be any present without the word, the Deacon will pause before him and report to the WM: Dcn:

WM, there is confusion in the craft.

WM:

Brother Sr. (or Jr.) Deacon, what is the cause of the confusion?

Dcn:

A Brother without the word.

WM:

Will any Brother present vouch for this Brother as an EA in good standing?

WM:

(If vouched for) The voucher is accepted, Brother Sr. (or Jr.) Deacon. Invest him with the word and receive it from him.

WM:

(If not vouched for) Please retire from the Lodge until a committee can be appointed to examine you. (After the visitor has retired and the Lodge opened, the WM will appoint a committee of at least three Brothers who retire from the Lodge and examine him on the Degree. If the committee finds him duly qualified, they all return to the Lodge at the proper time, go to the altar and salute the East before being seated. If the http://members.tripod.com/gh31

committee does not find him duly qualified, they will bid him a pleasant good evening and re-enter the Lodge at the proper time, going to the altar and saluting the East. They will report their findings to the WM before being seated. Neither they, nor any other person, will enter the Lodge during the Opening or Closing Ceremony, except in cases of dire emergency.) End of Challenging Deacons end up in front of the WM, facing each other. The JD whispers the word to the SD, both turn to face the WM, and the SD advances and whispers the word to the WM. WM:

(Rises to receive the word.) Brother SW, the word has safely reached the East.

SW:

All present are EAs, WM. (o) (Deacons return to stations and all but the JD are seated.)

WM:

Brother JD (o), what is the first great care of Masons when in Lodge assembled?

JD:

To see that the Lodge is duly tyled, WM.

WM:

Perform that duty. Inform the Tyler that I am about to open a Lodge of EAs and direct him to tyle accordingly. (JD goes to outer door, opens it.)

JD:

Brother Tyler, the WM is about to open a Lodge of EAs and you are directed to tyle accordingly. (Tyler acknowledges. JD closes door and returns to station.)

JD:

The Lodge is duly tyled , WM.

WM:

JW:

As the sun in the South at meridian height is the glory and beauty of the day, so stands the JW in the South, the better to observe the time; to call the craft from labor to refreshment; to superintend them during the hours thereof and see that they do not convert the purposes of refreshment into intemperance and excess; to call them on again in due season that the WM may have pleasure and the craft profit thereby.

Chap:

Most Holy and glorious Lord God, Great Architect of the Universe, the giver of all good gifts and graces, Thou hast promised that “where two or three are gathered together in Thy name, Thou wilt be in their midst, and bless them.” In Thy name we have assembled, and in Thy Name we desire to proceed in all our doings. Grant that the sublime principles of Freemasonry may so subdue every discordant passion within us, so harmonize and enrich our hearts with Thine own love and goodness, that the Lodge at this a time may humbly reflect that order and beauty which reign forever before Thy throne. Amen.

Response: So mote it be. (WM covers. All at attention) WM:

SS:

By being divested of all metals, neither naked nor clad, barefoot nor shod, his left foot, left knee, left breast and left arm bare, hoodwinked, a cable-tow once about his neck, the ends hanging over his right shoulder.

WM:

Brother Stewards, repair to the anteroom where you will find in waiting Mr. (Full name) who has been regularly elected by the members of this Lodge to be made a Mason. Propound to him the usual questions and, if he responds in the affirmative, conduct him to the preparation room and prepare him to be made an EA. When he is thus prepared, conduct him to the inner door of the Lodge and cause him to give three distinct knocks thereon with his own right hand. (Stewards pivot and march to outer door. Work of the Stewards in the Anteroom and Preparation Room The Stewards, on arriving at the anteroom, ask the prospective Candidate(s) the three questions which follow: SS:

Do you solemnly declare in the presence of these witnesses that you are a firm believer in the existence of a Supreme Being?

SS:

Do you declare that, unbiased by friends and uninfluenced by mercenary motives, you freely and voluntarily offer yourself as a candidate for the mysteries of Masonry; that you are prompted to seek this privilege by a favorable opinion conceived of the institution, a desire for knowledge and a sincere wish to be useful to your fellow creatures?

SS:

Do you promise to conform to all the established usages, customs and regulations of the fraternity?

If more than one Candidate, each must answer for himself. If replies are in the affirmative, the Stewards conduct the Candidate(s) to the preparation room where the SS addresses him or them as follows: SS:

The institution of which you are about to become a member is one by no means of a light or trifling nature, but of high importance and deep solemnity. Freemasonry consists of a course of ancient hieroglyphic and moral instructions taught according to ancient usages, by topics, emblems and allegorical figures. Even the ceremony of your gaining admission within these walls is emblematic of an event which all must sooner or later experience. It is emblematic of your final exit from this world to the world to come. You are doubtless aware that whatever a man may possess here on earth; whether in business, titles, honors or in his own reputation, will not gain him admission into the Celestial Lodge Above; but previous to his gaining admission there, he must become poor and penniless, blind and needy; dependent on the sovereign will of our Supreme Grand Master; and, in order to imprint these truths more forcibly upon your mind, it is necessary that you be divested of your outer apparel and clothed in a garment furnished you by the Lodge. Are you willing to submit to these regulations?

I am.

I receive you on the point of a sharp instrument piercing your naked left breast (SD places it as indicated on each Candidate in turn, then continues) which is to teach you that, as this is an instrument of torture to the flesh so should the remembrance thereof be to your conscience should you ever presume to reveal any of the secrets of Freemasonry unlawfully. (SD takes back rod and deposits instrument in a convenient place, steps to right side of Candidate, takes his right arm and cabletow, pivots and conducts him toward the center of the Lodge. Take one, upright, regular step with your left foot (done) Bring the heel of the right to the hollow of the left (done), thus forming a right angle, stand erect facing the East. (SW returns to station and sits.) (The SD will assist the Candidate in taking the step and forming the right angle.)

SD: WM:

(After SW is seated.) Your order has been obeyed, WM. My friend, for the first time in your life you have approached the altar of Freemasonry. You stand before us, a Candidate seeking admission into our order, but, before going any further, be warned of the solemnity and importance of the step you are about to take, and, if unwilling to proceed, withdraw while there is yet time. (Pause) The design of the Masonic Institution is to make its votaries wiser, better, and consequently happier. We receive none, knowingly, into our order who is not moral and upright before God and of good repute before the world. Such persons, when associated together, will naturally seek each other’s welfare and happiness equally with their own. That they may do so upon a common platform, and become not weary in well doing, we obligate them by solemn and irrevocable ties to perform the requirements of, and avoid the things prohibited by, Freemasonry. You have been elected by the members of this Lodge upon your own voluntary petition to become united with us in this great and good work. At your entrance into the Lodge, you professed your faith in God, that God Whom we, as Masons, revere and serve. The solemn engagements which you will be required to make before you can participate in our labors and privileges are made in the name of God, and when once taken, they may never be repudiated nor laid aside. Yet, I am free to inform you that our obligation contains nothing that can conflict with your duty to God, your country, your neighbor or yourself. Master of this Lodge, I ask you; Are you willing to take such an obligation, as all have taken before you? Cndt:

Yes, I am.

WM:

Brother SD, place the Candidate in due form to be made a Mason.

SD:

(To Candidate) Advance to the altar, kneel on your naked left knee, place your right so as to form a square, your body erect, your naked left hand supporting the Holy Bible, Square and Compasses, your naked right hand resting thereon. (Before the Candidate kneels, the SD should place the Candidates hands on the edge of the altar so that he may have some sense of security and support while kneeling. The SD will assist the Candidate to the proper form, using his hands if necessary, having deposited his rod in its holder at a prior convenient time.)

SD:

The Candidate is in due form, WM.

Arching Of the Rods (Optional) If the WM so desires, arches may be formed at this time. The SW and JW descend to the floor and move to the altar, remaining on their respective sides. The Stewards march to the West and form an arch over and in back of the SW. The Deacons march to a point to the East of the altar and form an arch through which the WM will pass, and will hold this arch immediately in back of the WM. After the WM has seated the Lodge, the arches will be broken and all who are not needed at the altar will be seated. After the Candidate has been pronounced to be in due form and/or the arches have been formed, all but the Lesser Lights will be dimmed or extinguished. WM:

(ooo) (With all but the Lesser Lights are dimmed or extinguished, the WM uncovers and advances to the East of the altar (passing through the arch). All rise and stand, but do not move forward.)

In token of your sincerity of purpose in these solemn engagements, you will disengage your hands (SD assists.) and, to make them binding on you for so long as you live, kiss the Holy Bible, now open before you. (Candidate kisses the Bible.)

WM:

Brother SD, our Brother now being bound to us by a covenant which may not be broken, you will release him from his cabletow. (SD removes cabletow and hands it to a nearby Brother.)

WM:

My Brother, for by that sacred appellation I now address you, in your present blind condition, what do you most desire?

Cndt:

(Prompted by the SD) Light in Masonry.

WM:

Light in Masonry being your desire you shall receive it. Brethren assist me in bringing our Brother to light in Masonry. (The brethren come forward and form two parallel lines from the altar to the East, one on the North, the other on the South.)

WM:

“In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said; Let there be light: and there was light.” In solemn commemoration of that sublime event, I, in like manner, Masonically declare, Let - there - be - light. (At the word, “light”, all, in unison, strike their hands together and stamp once with their right foot. The SD removes the hoodwink. The lights are turned up or on as required.)

WM:

And there is light. My Brother, being brought to light in Masonry for the first time, you discover before you the Three Great Lights of Masonry, the Holy Bible, Square and Compasses, by the light of Three Lesser Lights, of which these three lamps, placed in a triangular position, are the representatives. The Holy Bible is the rule and guide of our faith, the Square to square our actions, and the Compasses to circumscribe our desires and keep us within due bounds with all mankind, but more especially with http://members.tripod.com/gh31

a Brother Mason. The Three Lessor Lights are the sun, moon and Master of the Lodge, and are thus explained; as the sun rules the day and the moon governs the night, so ought the WM endeavor to rule and govern his Lodge with equal regularity. WM returns to the East, (passing through the arch), covers and seats the Lodge (o). Arches are broken and those carrying rods return to their stations. WM:

(o) (Advancing toward the altar.) My Brother, you now discover me approaching you from the East, on the step, (places feet on the step of an EA) under the Dueguard (gives Dueguard) and Sign (gives Sign) of an EA. An EA advances on his left foot (done), bringing the heel of the right to the hollow of the left (done), thus forming a right angle. This is the Dueguard (done) and alludes to the position in which your hands were placed when you took the Obligation. This is the Sign (done) and alludes to the symbolic penalty of the Obligation. On entering a Lodge of EAs, or retiring therefrom, while it is at labor, you will approach the altar and salute the WM with this Dueguard (done) and Sign (done). (WM continues to the altar.)

WM:

In token of Brotherly Love and Friendship, I present you my right hand, and with it, the grip and word of an EA. You being uninstructed, the SD will answer for you. (If more than one Candidate, those at the altar will assist in seeing that the grip is given properly.)

On completion the SD places the Candidate West of the altar, facing the East, and steps back.) WM:

(Goes to the altar with the apron.)

Apron Address WM:

My Brother, I now take pleasure in presenting you with this Lambskin, or White Leathern Apron. It is an emblem of innocence and the badge of a Mason, more ancient than the Golden Fleece or Roman Eagle, more honorable than the Star and Garter or any other order that can be conferred upon you at this, or any future period, by King, Prince, Potentate, or any other person except he be a Mason.

It may be that in the coming years upon your head shall rest the laurel wreath of victory; from your breast may hang jewels fit to grace the diadem of an eastern potentate; nay, more than these, with light added to the coming light, your ambitious feet may tread round after round the ladder that leads to fame in our mystic circle and even the purple of our Fraternity may rest upon your honored shoulders; but never again from mortal hands, never again until your enfranchised spirit shall have passed upward and inward through the Pearly Gates shall any honor so distinguished, so emblematic of purity and all perfection be bestowed upon you as that which I now confer. It is yours to wear through an honorable life and, at your death, to be placed upon the coffin which shall contain your earthly remains, and with them laid beneath the silent clods of the valley. Let its pure and spotless surface be to you an ever-present reminder of an unblemished purity of life and rectitude of conduct, a never-ending argument for nobler deeds, higher http://members.tripod.com/gh31

thoughts and greater achievements. And when at last your weary feet shall have come to the end of their toilsome journey, and from your nerveless grasp shall drop forever the working tools of life, may the record of your life and actions be as pure and spotless as this fair emblem which I now place in your hands. (WM hands the apron to the Candidate.) And when your trembling soul shall stand naked and alone before the Great White Throne, may it be your portion, my Brother, to hear from Him who sitteth as the Judge Supreme the welcome words, “Well done good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” (WM returns to his station and sits.) My Brother, you will now be re-conducted to the SW in the West, who will teach you to wear your apron as an EA Mason, and it is hoped that you will wear it with pleasure to yourself and with honor to the Fraternity. SD:

(About faces with the Candidate and approaches the SW’s station. (o) with rod) Brother SW, it is the will and pleasure of the WM in the East that our newly admitted Brother be taught how to wear his apron as an EA.

SW:

(Rises) Cause the Brother to face the East. (SD and Candidate pivot about face and SW descends to the floor. SW puts on and adjusts apron.)

SW:

My Brother, at the building of King Solomon’s Temple there were three principal classes of Masons, and each class, as a distinguishing badge, wore his apron in a peculiar manner. EAs, being the bearers of burdens, were directed to wear theirs with the bib turned up so as to protect their clothing. Thus my Brother, will you wear yours while laboring among us as a speculative EA, but remember, that although stains upon this garment brought credit rather than disgrace to the ancient EA, you, as a speculative EA, must keep this apron as an emblem of innocence, unspotted before the world. (SW returns to station and sits, SD conducts Candidate to altar.)

SD:

Your order has been obeyed, WM. http://members.tripod.com/gh31

The Demand WM:

My Brother, agreeable to an ancient custom in all regular and well governed Lodges of EAs, it is now necessary that you be required to deposit something of a metallic kind, not for its intrinsic worth or value, but that it may be laid up in the archives of the Lodge as a memorial that you are now made a Mason.

SD:

(To Candidate) Examine yourself strictly and see if you cannot find such an object.

Cndt:

(Prompted by SD) I find myself entirely destitute, WM.

WM:

This requirement is to remind you of your now extremely poor and penniless situation. Should you ever after meet a friend, more especially a Brother, in like circumstance, you must contribute as liberally to his relief as you can, without injury to yourself.

WM:

Brother SD, conduct our newly admitted Brother to the right hand of the WM in the East. (SD and Candidate step back, pivot left and march North and East to the NE corner of the Lodge. Both face the East and stand on the step of an EA, body erect.)

The Working Tools The Working Tools may be presented by the WM or any qualified Brother appointed by the WM. If the WM presents them, he will rise and descend to in front of the Candidate, carrying them in his hands. WM:

My Brother, I now present you with the Working Tools of an EA and will teach you their uses.

Biblioteca Masónica Humanitas 21

LITURGIA DEL PRIMER GRADO, RITO DE YORK

The Working Tools of an EA are the twenty-four inch gauge and the common gavel. The twenty-four inch gauge is an instrument made use of by operative Masons to measure and lay out their work, but we, as F&AMs, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of dividing our time. It being divided into twenty-four equal parts is emblematic of the twentyfour hours of the day, which we are taught to divide into three equal parts, whereby we find eight hours for the service of God and a distressed, worthy Brother, eight for our usual vocations, and eight for refreshment and sleep. The common gavel is an instrument made use of by operative Masons to break off the corners of rough stones, the better to fit them for the builder’s use, but we, as F& AMs, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of divesting our hearts and consciences of all the vices and superfluities of life, thereby fitting our minds, as living stones, for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens. WM or appointed Brother places the Working Tools to one side and returns to station or seat and sits. If an appointed Brother, he will first salute the WM with the proper signs. WM:

You will now be re-conducted to the place whence you came, there invested of what you were divested and returned to the Lodge for further instructions. (Stewards march to inner door and stand on either side of it, SS to the South. SD conducts Candidate to West of altar. Candidate salutes WM, instructed by the SD, if necessary. SD and Candidate step back, pivot and march to inner door. Candidate is given in charge of the Stewards, who conduct him into the preparation room. SD returns to station and sits. If the WM chooses to call the Lodge to refreshment while the Candidate is being reinvested, he may do so in the same manner as before. It is the responsibility of the SD to determine at what time the Candidate is ready to re-enter the Lodge, and to inform the WM. If the Lodge has been called to refreshment, the WM will call the craft from refreshment to labor in the same manner as before. The Tyler then advises the SS that the Lodge is at labor.) http://members.tripod.com/gh31

SD:

(SS gives (k) on inner door. SD rises and $) WM, there is an alarm at the door to the preparation room.

WM:

Brother SD, ascertain the cause of the alarm, and if it is our recently initiated Brother, conduct him West of the altar. (SD takes rod, marches to inner door, gives (k), opens it. Stewards enter with Candidate and pass him to the SD who conducts him West of the altar. All advance on the step and the Candidate salutes the WM, instructed by the SD if necessary.)

WM:

My Brother, you will now be placed in the NE corner of the Lodge as the youngest EA. (Stewards, return to stations and are seated. SD conducts Candidate to NE corner. Both face the WM.)

WM:

Form with your feet a right angle. (Assumes the step of an EA) Stand with your body erect to the East. (Done) My Brother, you now stand as a just and upright Mason and I give it you strictly in charge as such, ever to walk and act.

Second Section: The Lectures There are two Lectures in the Second Section. The first is referred to as the Work Lecture, and the second as the Recapitulation. If there is no EA present to be examined on his proficiency, the WM may postpone the Work Lecture to a time when an already initiated EA is required to be examined on his proficiency, or when two competent, appointed Brethren will give it for the benefit of the newly admitted Brother. WM:

My Brother, you will now give your attention to the Lectures of this Degree, which will be delivered to you by .... (here the WM may use his own words in informing the Candidate which Lectures will be given and by whom. SD conducts Candidate to a convenient seat to witness the Lectures, after which he returns to his station and is seated, if he is not to give the Lecture.)

Preliminary Remarks Lecturer:

My Brother, the forms and ceremonies of your Initiation may seem to you light and frivolous, if not absolutely unmeaning: yet, such is not the truth, for each of these forms and ceremonies has a definite significance, and they have been in use for so long a time that the memory of man runneth not to the contrary, and will undoubtedly continue to be so used until time shall be no more. This Section is presented in two parts, the first tracing those forms and ceremonies, and the second explaining why you were thus dealt with. (If the Work Lecture is not to be given, the speaker should mention the fact.)

Your answer?

A: By being a man, freeborn, of lawful age and well recommended. Q: A:

What followed? I was directed to wait with patience until the WM was informed of my request and his answer returned.

Q:

What answer did he return?

A:

Let him enter and be received in due and ancient form.

Q:

How were you received? A: On the point of a sharp instrument at my naked left breast, which was to teach me that, as that was an instrument of torture to the flesh, so should the remembrance thereof be to my conscience, should I ever presume to reveal any of the secrets of Masonry unlawfully.

Q:

What followed?

A:

My trust being in God, my faith was well founded. I was taken by the right hand, ordered to arise, follow my guide and fear no danger. Q:

A:

Where did you follow your guide? Once about the altar to the JW in the South; thence to the SW in the West; thence to the WM in the East, where the same questions were asked and like answers returned as at the door.

Q: A:

How did the WM dispose of you? He ordered me to be re-conducted to the SW in the W, who taught me to approach the East, advancing by one upright, regular step, my feet forming a right angle, my body erect to the WM in the East.

Q:

What did the WM then do with you?

Q:

Did you receive it?

A:

I did.

Q:

How?

A:

By order of the WM and the assistance of the Brethren.

Q:

On being brought to light in Masonry, what did you first discover upon the altar?

us within due bounds with all mankind, but more especially with a Brother Mason. Q:

What are the Three Lesser Lights?

The sun, moon and the Master of the Lodge. Q:

A:

How are they explained as such? As the sun rules the day and the moon governs the night, so should the WM endeavor to rule and govern his Lodge with equal regularity.

You were divested of all metals when made a Mason for two reasons: first, that you should carry nothing offensive or defensive into the Lodge with you; second, because at the building off King Solomon’s Temple there was not heard the sound of axe, hammer, nor any tool of iron. You may well ask, how then could a building of such stupendous magnitude be erected? It was because the stones were all hewn, squared and numbered in the quarries where they were found; the timbers felled and prepared in the forests of Lebanon, conveyed by sea in floats to Joppa, and from thence by land to Jerusalem, where they were set upon by wooden mauls prepared for that purpose. And when the building was erected, its several parts fitted with such exactness that it had more the appearance of being the handiwork of the Supreme Architect of the Universe than that of human hands. You were neither naked nor c1ad, because Masonry regards no man for his worldly wealth or honor. It was, therefore, to teach you that it was the internal, and not the external qualifications in a man that should render him worthy to be made a Mason. You were neither barefoot nor shod, agreeable to an ancient Israelitish custom, for we read in the Book of Ruth, this was the manner in former times concerning redeeming and changing, for, to confirm all things, a man plucked off his shoe and gave it to his neighbor. And this was a testament in Israel. This, therefore, was done to show the sincerity of your intentions in the business we were then engaged upon. You were hoodwinked and with a cabletow about your neck for three reasons. First, that as you were then in darkness, so should you keep the world without in future as relates to the secrets of Freemasonry until they should obtain them as lawfully as you were then about to do. Second, that your heart should be taught to conceive, before your eyes beheld, the beauties of Masonry. Third, should you have refused to submit to the forms and ceremonies of Masonry, http://members.tripod.com/gh31

being found unworthy to be taken by the hand as a Brother, you might, by help of the cabletow, have been conducted out of the Lodge without being able to discover even the form thereof. You were caused to give three distinct knocks for two reasons. First, to alarm the Lodge and inform the Master that you were prepared for initiation. Second, to remind you of a certain text of Scripture: “Ask, and ye shall receive; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you”, which applied to your situation at that time, inasmuch as you asked the recommendation of a friend to be made a Mason; through his recommendation you sought initiation; you knocked at the door of the Lodge and it was opened unto you. You were received upon the point of a sharp instrument to teach you that as that was an instrument of torture to the flesh, so should the remembrance thereof be to your conscience should you ever presume to reveal any of the secrets of Masonry, unlawfully. You were caused to kneel and attend prayer because no man should ever enter upon any great or important undertaking without first invoking the blessings of Deity. You were asked in whom you put your trust because, agreeable to an ancient Masonic custom, no atheist could be made a Mason. It was therefore necessary that you should profess your belief in Deity; otherwise no obligation would be binding upon you. You were taken by the right hand, ordered to arise, follow your guide and fear no danger, to teach you that, as at that time you could neither foresee nor prevent danger, you were in the hands of a true friend, in whose fidelity you might, with safety, confide. You were conducted once about the altar, that the brethren might see that you were duly and truly prepared. You were caused to meet with several obstructions on your passage because every regular and well governed Lodge is a representation of King Solomon’s Temple, where we learn there were guards stationed at the South, West and East gates to see that none passed nor repassed but such as were duly qualified and had permission. It was therefore necessary that you should meet with http://members.tripod.com/gh31

those several obstructions in order that you might be duly examined before you could be made a Mason. You were caused to kneel on your left knee because the left was supposed to be the weaker part of man. It was, therefore, to teach you that it was the weaker part of Masonry that you were then entering upon, being that of an EA. You were caused to rest your right hand on the Holy Bible, Square and Compasses, because the right hand was supposed, by our ancient brethren, to be the seat of fidelity, which was said sometimes to be represented by two right hands joined; at other times, by two human figures holding each other by the right hand. The right hand, therefore, was made use of as a token of your sincerity and a pledge of your fidelity in the business we were then entering upon. You were presented with a lambskin apron, which is the true badge of a Mason, because the lamb has been deemed, in all ages, an emblem of innocence. He, therefore, who wears the lambskin as a badge of Masonry, is thereby continually reminded of that purity of life and rectitude of conduct which is essentially necessary to his gaining admission into that Celestial Lodge above, where the Supreme Architect of the Universe presides. You were required to deposit something of a metallic kind to remind you of your then extremely poor and penniless situation; and, should you ever after meet a friend, more especially a Brother, in like circumstance, you should contribute as liberally to his relief as you could without injury to yourself. You were placed in the North-East corner as the youngest EA, because in operative Masonry, the first stone of a building is usually placed in the NE corner. You were therefore placed there to receive these first instructions upon which to build your future moral and Masonic edifice. (Lecturer salutes the WM and returns to his seat or station. If the WM has been the Lecturer, he returns to the East.) Third Section - Explanatory WM may chose to call the Lodge to refreshment and back to labor, using the same formula as before. This section explains what constitutes and what authorizes a Masonic Lodge; where held, its form, supports, covering, furniture, ornaments, lights and http://members.tripod.com/gh31

jewels; how situated, and to whom dedicated. A Lodge is a certain number of Masons duly assembled with the Holy Bible, Square and Compasses, and a Charter or Warrant empowering it to work. Our ancient brethren held their Lodges on high hills or in low vales, the better to observe the approach of cowans and eavesdroppers, ascending or descending. Lodge meetings at the present day are usually held in upper chambers, probably for the security which such places afford. This custom may have had its origin in a practice observed by the ancient Jews of building their temples, schools and synagogues on high hills, a practice which seems to have met the approbation of the Almighty, who said unto the Prophet Ezekiel, “Upon the top of the mountain, the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy.” The form of a Lodge is oblong. In length from East to West, in breadth between North and South, as high as heaven and as deep as from the surface to the center. A Lodge is said to be thus extensive to denote the universality of Freemasonry, and teaches that a Mason’s charity shall be equally extensive. A Lodge is supported by three great pillars denominated Wisdom, Strength and Beauty; because there should be wisdom to contrive, strength to support and beauty to adorn all great and important undertakings. They are represented by the three principal officers of the Lodge: the pillar Wisdom, by the WM in the East, who is presumed to have wisdom to open and govern the Lodge; the pillar Strength, by the Senior Warden in the West, whose duty it is to assist the WM in the discharge of his arduous labors; and the pillar Beauty, by the Junior Warden in the South, whose duty it is to call the Craft from labor to refreshment, to superintend them during the hours thereof, and see that they do not convert the purpose of refreshment into intemperance and excess, to call them on again in due season, that the WM may have pleasure, and the Craft profit thereby. The covering of a Lodge is no less than the clouded canopy, or star-decked heaven, where all good Masons hope at last to arrive by the aid of that ladder which Jacob, in his vision, saw extended from earth to heaven, the principal rounds of which are denominated Faith, Hope and Charity, which admonishes us to have Faith in God, Hope in immortality, and Charity to all mankind. The greatest of these is Charity; for our Faith may be lost in sight, Hope ends in fruition, but Charity extends beyond the grave, through the boundless realms of eternity.

Every regular and well governed Lodge is furnished with the Holy Bible, Square, and Compasses, together with a Charter or Dispensation. The Holy Bible is dedicated to the service of God, because it is the inestimable gift of God to man and on it we obligate a newly admitted brother; the Square to the Master, because it is the proper Masonic emblem of his office, and the Compasses to the Craft, because, by a due attention to its use, they are taught to circumscribe their desires and keep their passions within due bounds with all mankind, especially the brethren. The ornaments of a Lodge are the Mosaic Pavement, the Indented Tassel and the Blazing Star. The Mosaic Pavement is a representation of the ground floor of King Solomon’s Temple; the Indented Tassel, of that beautiful tessellated border or skirting which surrounded it. The Mosaic pavement is emblematic of human life, checkered with good and evil; the Indented Tassel, of the manifold blessings and comforts which constantly surround us, and which we hope to enjoy by a firm reliance on Divine Providence, which is hieroglyphically represented by the Blazing Star in the center. A Lodge has three symbolic lights, situated East, West and South. There is none in the North because King Solomon’s Temple was situated so far north of the ecliptic that the sun, even at meridian height, did not dart its rays into the northernmost parts. The North is therefore Masonically termed a place of darkness.

A Lodge has six Jewels, three immovable and three movable. The immovable Jewels are the Square, the Level and the Plumb. The Square teaches morality; the Level, equality; and the Plumb, rectitude of life. They are so termed immovable because they are appropriate to particular parts of the Lodge, where alone they should be found; the Square to the WM in the East, the Level to the SW in the West and the Plumb to the JW in the South. Although the brethren occupying those stations may from time to time be changed, still these Jewels will always be found in their respective stations in the Lodge. The movable Jewels are the Rough Ashlar, the Perfect Ashlar and the TrestleBoard. The Rough Ashlar is a stone in its rude and natural state, as taken from the quarry; the Perfect Ashlar, one prepared by the workmen to be adjusted by the working tools of the Fellow Crafts; and the Trestle-Board is for the master workman to draw his designs upon. By the Rough Ashlar we are reminded of our rude and imperfect state by nature; by the Perfect Ashlar, of that state of

46

perfection at which we hope to arrive by a virtuous education, our own endeavors and the blessing of Deity; and, as the operative workman erects his temporal building in accordance with the designs laid down upon the TrestleBoard by the master workman , so should we, both operative and speculative, endeavor to erect our spiritual building in accordance with the designs laid down by the Supreme Architect of the Universe in the Great Book of Nature and Revelation, which is our spiritual, moral and Masonic Trestle-Board. Lodges are, or ought to be, situated due East and West. King Solomon’s Temple was so situated because Moses, by divine command, after having conducted the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, through the Red Sea and into the wilderness, erected a Tabernacle to God, which he situated due East and West, to commemorate that miraculous East wind which wrought their mighty deliverance and likewise the better to receive the rays of the rising sun. King Solomon’s Temple is said, to have been a representation of that Tabernacle. Lodges were anciently dedicated to King Solomon, as he is said to have been our first Most Excellent Grand Master, but modern Masons dedicate their Lodges to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, and there is represented in every Lodge a certain Point within a Circle, bordered by two perpendicular, parallel lines representing those two Saints; and upon the Circle rests the Holy Scriptures. The point within the Circle represents an individual brother, and the Circle is the boundary beyond which he is never to suffer his passions or prejudices to betray him. In going around the circle he must necessarily touch those two lines, as well as the Holy Scriptures. While a Mason keeps himself thus circumscribed, it is impossible that he can materially err. The principal tenets of our profession are threefold, including the inculcation and practice of those truly commendable virtues, Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. By the exercise of Brotherly Love, we are taught to regard the whole human race as one family; the high, the low, the rich, the poor , who, being created by one Almighty Parent, and inhabitants of the same planet ought to aid, support and protect each other. On this principle Masonry unites men of every country, sect and opinion, and conciliates true friendship among those who might otherwise have remained at a perpetual distance. To relieve the distressed is a duty incumbent on all men, but particularly on Masons, who are linked together by an indissoluble chain of sincere affection. To soothe the unhappy, to sympathize with them in their misfortunes, to

compassionate their miseries, and to restore Peace to their troubled minds are the great aims we have in view. On this basis we form our friendships and establish our connections. Truth is a Divine attribute and the foundation of every virtue. To be good men and true is the first lesson we are taught in Free-masonry. On this theme we contemplate, and by its dictates endeavor to regulate our conduct. Hence, while influenced by this principle, hypocrisy and deceit are unknown among us, sincerity and plain dealing distinguish us, and the heart and tongue join in promoting each other’s welfare and rejoicing in each other’s prosperity. You were informed that you would be known by certain Signs, a Token, a Word and the Perfect Points of Entrance. You have been given the Sign, Token and Word. I will now explain to you the Perfect Points of Entrance, how many and what they are. They are four: the Guttural, Pectoral, Manual and the Pedal, which allude to the four cardinal virtues: Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence and Justice. Temperance is that due restraint upon our affections and passions which renders the body tame and governable, and frees the mind from the allurement of vice. This virtue would be your constant practice, as you are thereby taught to avoid excess or the contracting of any licentious or vicious habits, the indulgence of which might lead you to disclose some of those valuable secrets which you have promised to conceal and never reveal, and which would consequently subject you to the contempt and detestation of all good Masons, as well as to the symbolic penalty of your obligation, which alludes to the Guttural. (Lecturer gives Sign of an EA.) Fortitude is that noble and steady purpose off the mind whereby we are enabled to undergo any pain, peril or danger, when prudently deemed expedient. This virtue is equally distant from rashness and cowardice, and should be deeply impressed upon your mind as a safeguard or security against any attempt that may be made, by force or otherwise, to extort from you any of those valuable secrets with which you have been so solemnly entrusted, and which was emblematically represented upon your first admission into the Lodge, when you were received upon the point of a sharp instrument at your naked left breast, which alludes to the Pectoral. (Lecturer puts finger to breast.) Prudence teaches us to regulate our lives and actions agreeably to the dictates of reason, and is that habit by which we wisely judge and prudently determine on all things relative to our present as well as to our future happiness. This http://members.tripod.com/gh31

Biblioteca Masónica Humanitas 21

LITURGIA DEL PRIMER GRADO, RITO DE YORK

48

virtue should be your particular characteristic, not only for the government of your conduct while in the Lodge, but also when abroad in the world. You should be particularly cautious in all strange or mixed companies never to let fall the least Sign, Token or Word whereby the secrets of Freemasonry might be obtained, ever bearing in mind that memorable period when you knelt at the altar on your bare left knee, your right forming a square, your left hand supporting the Holy Bible, Square and Compasses, your right resting thereon, which alludes to the Manual. (Lecturer gives Due-guard of an EA.) Justice is that standard or boundary of right which enables us to render to every man his just due without distinction. This virtue is not only consistent with Divine and human laws, but it is the very cement and support of civil society; and, as Justice in a great measure constitutes the really good man, so should it be your invariable practice never to deviate from the minutest principles thereof, ever remembering the time when you were placed in the NE corner of the Lodge, your feet forming a right angle, which alludes to the Pedal. (Lecturer places his feet on the step of an EA.) Entered Apprentices should serve their master with freedom, fervency and zeal, which are emblematically represented by Chalk, Charcoal and Clay. There is nothing freer than Chalk, the slightest touch of which leaves a trace; there is nothing more fervent than Charcoal, for to it, when properly ignited, the most obdurate metals will yield: there is nothing more zealous than Clay, our Mother Earth, for it alone of all the elements has never proved unfriendly to man. Bodies of Water deluge him with rains, oppress him with hail and drown him with inundation; the Air rushes in storms and prepares the tempest; and Fire lights up the volcano; but the Earth, ever kind and indulgent, is found subservient to his wishes. Though constantly harassed, more to furnish the luxuries than the necessities of life, she never refuses man her customary yield, spreading his pathway with flowers and his table with plenty. Though she produces poison, still she supplies the antidote, and returns with interest every good committed to her care; and when at last we are called upon to pass through the “dark valley of the shadow of death” she once more receives us, and piously covers our remains within her bosom, thus admonishing us that as from earth we came, so to it we must surely return. Lecturer salutes the WM and returns to his seat or station. If WM has been the lecturer, he returns to the East. The SD approaches and stands by the Candidate.

WM:

Brother SD, conduct our Brother West of the Altar. (SD complies.)

WM:

This, my Brother, concludes the Lectures belonging to this Degree. I will now give you the Charge. (ooo) (If the WM has appointed another Brother to give the Charge, he will introduce him and such Brother will approach the Candidate.)

Charge at Initiation My Brother, as you are now introduced to the first principles of Freemasonry, I congratulate you on being accepted into this ancient and honorable Fraternity. Ancient, as having existed from time immemorial; and honorable as tending in every particular so to render all men who will be conformable to its precepts. No institution was ever raised on a better principle or more solid foundation, nor were ever more excellent rules and useful maxims laid down than are contained in the several Masonic lectures. The wisest and best of men in all ages have been encouragers and promoters of our Art, and have never deemed it derogatory to their reputation to level themselves with the Fraternity, to extend its privileges, and to patronize its assemblies. There are three great duties which, as a Mason, you are charged to inculcate: to God, to your neighbor, and to yourself. To God, in never mentioning His name save with that reverential awe which is due from the creature to his Creator, to implore His aid in all your laudable undertakings, and to esteem Him as the Chief Good. To your neighbor, in acting upon the square and in doing unto him as you would that he should do unto you. And to yourself, in avoiding all irregularities and intemperance, which may impair your faculties or debase the dignity of your profession. A zealous attachment to these duties will insure public and private esteem. In the State you are to be a quiet and peaceable citizen, true to your government and just to your country. You are not to countenance, disloyalty or rebellion, but patiently submit to legal authority and conform with cheerfulness to the government of the country in which you live.

In your outward demeanor be particularly careful to avoid censure and reproach. Let not interest, favor or prejudice bias your integrity or influence you to be guilty of a dishonorable notion. Although your frequent appearance at our regular meetings is earnestly solicited, yet it is not meant that Freemasonry should interfere with your necessary vocations, for these are on no account to be neglected: neither are you to suffer your zeal for the institution to lead you into argument with those who, through ignorance, may ridicule it. At your leisure hours, that you may improve in Masonic knowledge, you are to converse with well-informed brethren, who will always be as ready to give as you will be to receive instruction. Finally, my Brother, keep inviolate the mysteries of the Order, as these are to distinguish you from the rest of the community and mark your consequence among Masons. If, in the circle of your acquaintance, you find a person desirous of being initiated into the Fraternity, be particularly careful not to recommend him unless you are convinced that he will conform to our rules, that the honor, glory and reputation of the institution may be firmly established, and the world at large be convinced of its good effects. After the Charge, if an appointed Brother has delivered it, he will salute the WM and return to his seat or station. WM:

(o) Before you can be Passed to the Degree of Fellowcraft, it will be necessary for you to pass an examination in open Lodge on the work of this Degree. Any Brother will gladly assist you, and, when ready, you will inform the WM or Secretary and a time will be fixed for your examination. This, my Brother, concludes the ceremonies of this Degree. You are now entitled to a seat among the brethren. (SD instructs the Candidate to salute the WM. SD takes the Candidate as before, they pivot right and SD conducts the Candidate to any convenient seat. SD marches to his station and is seated.)
