2020 brings a Festival of contrasts – hilarious, tragic, political, mythic – great works of art separated by over two centuries, but all able to speak directly to us across the years, and to stir our contemporary imaginations. If you come several times to see different operas, you will also experience the gardens changing – lovingly tended by our green-fingered experts: our ‘seventh’ production, a very organic opera!

A visit to Glyndebourne’s Festival is about more than just the opera… Here’s a taste of what you can expect.
Your day at Escape to the country Glyndebourne is nestled in the heart of the Sussex countryside, in the South Downs National Park, happily an hour away from the distractions of London and 20 minutes from Brighton. We’ll even collect you by coach from our local mainline train station, Lewes (see page 27 for details). Dress for the occasion We encourage formal evening dress in keeping with the wishes of Glyndebourne’s founder, John Christie. Fashions have changed since 1934, but our audiences today still enjoy the thrill of dressing up. Enjoy the glorious gardens Take time to explore the gardens that surround our state-of-the-art, 1,200-seat, indoor opera house. The grounds open two hours before every performance, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the gardens, the visual art around the theatre and visit the Glyndebourne Shop. Visual Arts You’ll find art inspired by Glyndebourne in Gallery 94 and in the gardens, around the theme of Forces of Nature. In the Foyer Circle you'll find work by our 2020 Associate Artist, Tom Hammick.
Picnics and dining Our 90-minute dining interval during every performance is as much of a tradition as our opera. Enjoy a leisurely picnic – you can bring your own or order one and collect it when you arrive. You are welcome to picnic in any part of the Glyndebourne gardens, and your picnic can be set up pre-performance and left out for the duration of your visit. Alternatively, a limited number of picnic tables are available on the Upper Circle Level balcony and beside the River Cottage Deli. In addition, for a fee, places can be booked in the Greenhouse Marquee and in our new Garden Marquee via the Box Office. Prefer the great indoors? Leith’s at Glyndebourne run our three on-site restaurants, where your dining experience can range from a relaxed afternoon tea to sumptuous fine dining. Opening night The Festival is one big summer party – or like a wedding, as an audience member recently described it – and we’re starting it in style. As the Revolution reaches its bloody height, Blanche de la Force turns her back on the world, searching for peace and purpose in the convent. But life as a Carmélite has its own horrors. Faced with an agonising choice, Blanche must let go of her fears and finally find the courage to live – or die. One of the most devastatingly powerful operas in the repertoire, Dialogues des Carmélites is also one of the most beautiful. Steeped in Debussy, Monteverdi and Verdi, Poulenc’s lyrical score balances cinematic drama and scope, charged with the violence of revolution, with moments of startling simplicity and beauty. The composer may have asked rueful forgiveness for his nuns and their old-fashioned music, but this modern masterpiece needs no apology. After a triumphant Saul, Barrie Kosky returns to direct Glyndebourne’s first ever production of Dialogues des Carmélites. Robin Ticciati conducts a superb ensemble cast.

So when a travelling doctor arrives in town Nemorino pins all his hopes on a magical love potion. But nothing in this topsy-turvy comedy is ever quite as it seems… Light, lyrical and bursting with energy, L’elisir d’amore was the biggest success of Donizetti’s career – a comedy with the softest of hearts and the sweetest of melodies, including Nemorino’s much-loved aria ‘Una furtiva lagrima’. Updating the action to the 1940s, Annabel Arden’s production celebrates the opera’s original joyful, colourful spirit, painting a vivid picture of an Italy on the brink of political change. bducted by pirates, Konstanze and her maid Blonde have been sold into Pasha Selim’s harem. With the help of their lovers the two women plot their escape. But when their plans are betrayed and punishment looms, help comes from an unlikely quarter. Mozart’s first opera for Vienna is an ambitious musical calling-card, designed to establish its young composer at the heart of this sophisticated society. Exotic orchestral textures give the score its distinctive colour and vitality. Add to this many of the most demanding and dazzlingly virtuosic arias Mozart ever wrote, and you have a work of buoyant, irrepressible charm, whose lively twists and turns resolve in an unexpectedly thought-provoking conclusion. Study Events Presented by Alexandra Coghlan, our opera content consultant, these study events are designed to enhance your enjoyment of the Festival 2020 operas and to explore some broader themes emerging from them. Each event features expert presentations, a panel discussion and a musical preview. The devil has all the best tunes: morality, ethics and opera Sun 19 July, 10.30am-1.30pm, Ebert Room From Stravinsky’s twisted morality play The Rake’s Progress to Mozart’s delicate interrogation of Christianity and Islam in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, this season’s operas wrestle with ethical and moral dilemmas, colliding vice and virtue in unexpected, often provocative ways. Religion’s role at the opera, private convictions and collective values will all feature in a wide-ranging discussion. Tickets for this event are priced at £25 per person. Only here for the bier: women in opera Sat 8 August, 10.30am-4.30pm, Ebert Room Butterfly, Violetta, Manon, Carmen: opera’s women have spent centuries suffering and dying at the hands of men. They sing their pain in magnificent, memorable music, but does that make them heroines or victims? Enjoy Glyndebourne throughout the year Backstage Tours November – February Glimpse world-class opera in the making with this special 90-minute look behind the scenes – plenty to explore whether you’re new to Glyndebourne or have been an audience member for years. Tour 2019 Since 1968 the Tour has ensured that opera from Glyndebourne is accessible to audiences around the country and, just as importantly, provided a platform for emerging talent. Join the Tour this year at Glyndebourne, Canterbury, Milton Keynes, Liverpool, Woking or Norwich with our first ever production of Verdi's Rigoletto, and revivals of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Handel’s Rinaldo. Tour 2019 runs from 11 October to 15 December. Glyndebourne Chorus Christmas Concerts 2019 Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December, 3.00pm Sizzling operatic highlights, festive favourites and carols for all from the Glyndebourne Chorus, Glyndebourne Youth Opera and the Glyndebourne Tour Orchestra, conducted by Aidan Oliver.

If you have any specific requirements before you arrive you can contact us on +44 (0)1273 815 000 or start a live chat via the website. Arriving at Glyndebourne The nearest train station is Lewes. As Glyndebourne is three miles from the station we provide a free round-trip coach service. A coach will be waiting at Lewes station for audience members taking the recommended train* or the next connecting service following a delay or cancellation. If you want to arrive later, another coach will leave one hour after the departure time of the first coach. This service is not pre-bookable. Alternatively, if you arrive by car there is a large, free on-site car park for visitors. Electric cars You can recharge your electric car during a performance, please let Box Office know in advance if you would like to use this facility.
FOR THOSE WITH ACCESS NEEDS Auditorium access Conveniently located spaces are reserved for wheelchairs at Foyer Circle (ground level) only. We have a limited number of wheelchairs available if you would like to borrow one. Lift access is available at the Foyer Circle, Circle and Upper Circle levels of the auditorium and to Gallery 94. The Stalls has stepped access only. Hearing support The auditorium is equipped with a sound enhancement system. Receivers may be borrowed – please let us know if you require one. Assistance animals are welcome. We provide a free round-trip coach service from Lewes train station to Glyndebourne when you arrive on the recommended train detailed in this Performance Schedule, and there will be an additional coach service one hour later. This service is not pre-bookable and it is complimentary if used to and from Glyndebourne; a ticket is issued for your return journey. We run post-opera coaches back to Lewes train station after every performance. The last post-opera coach leaves approximately 30 minutes after a performance ends. Bus and train times are recommendations only. Glyndebourne cannot guarantee the published times as they may be subject to change. We recommend that you check with National Rail Enquiries on 03457 48 49 50 or nationalrail.co.uk before embarking on your journey. Note: Broadcast cameras will be present at certain performances. The design of the auditorium specifically allows for camera positions to cause only minimal disruption to members of the audience.
