GMA in the International Arena:
Business’s Collective Action Can Help Stem Corruption
Kapuso Network shares Integrity Initiative participation at the ASEAN Next-Gen CSR Forum GMA’s fellow panelists included Huguette Labelle (former Chair of Transparency International), Gerard Forlin (Cornerstone Barristers in London, Maxwell Chambers in Singapore and Denman Chambers in Sydney) and Yolanda Banks (Senior Advisor for Corporate Social Responsibility of the Export Development Canada). Shervin Majlessi (Regional Adviser on Anti-Corruption of the Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) moderated the discussion.
(L-R): Shervin Majlessi (Regional Adviser on Anti-Corruption of the Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), Ma. Teresa L. Pacis (Assistant Vice President for Corporate Affairs of GMA Network), Gerard Forlin (Cornerstone Barristers in London, Maxwell Chambers in Singapore and Denman Chambers in Sydney) and Yolanda Banks (Senior Advisor for Corporate Social Responsibility of the Export Development Canada)
The World Bank estimates that corruption increases the total cost of doing business globally by up to 10%. A Regional Working Group on Business Integrity was recently established under the auspices of the ASEAN CSR Network to explore avenues of enabling business networks to prevent corruption through collective action. In the Philippines, the leading private sector lead movement towards this end is the Integrity Initiative (II). GMA Network joined II in 2012 – the first broadcast company to do so.
According to Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, GMA’s Chairman and CEO, “Part of being a world-class media organization is having world-class standards, including ethical standards. This is not only a commitment to journalism and to the truth, but a duty to our country. Our democracy needs a media industry that is truthful, fair, competent and brave.” At the just-concluded ASEAN Next-Gen CSR Forum held in Bali, Indonesia, GMA Network was among the panelists in the focused discussion on corruption as an impediment to ASEAN’s long-term economic development, sharing its continuous participation in the Integrity Initiative.
As 2015 signals the deadline for an integrated ASEAN community, GMA’s presence in the ASEAN region is getting stronger, as well. Today, select Kapuso dramas are sold in Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia. According to Ma. Teresa L. Pacis, GMA’s Assistant Vice President for Corporate Affairs, who sat in the forum for GMA, “A strong affiliation with integrity augurs well for doing business beyond Philippine shores.” GMA fully adopted the Unified Code of Conduct for Business that was launched at the 1st Integrity Summit in 2012. The Network is rated as “Advanced” in both the Online Integrity Self-Assessment and the Pilot Validation of Integrity SelfAssessment Results spearheaded by the Integrity Initiative. Today, II counts around 2000 signatories of the Integrity Pledge.

FEBRUARY 2015 Donations From The Heart
From GMA Network to the Philippine Red Cross: Over 1,783 Blood Bags This February, the station with a heart continues to make a difference in the lives of Filipinos with the annual Kapuso Bloodletting Day held in key areas across the Philippines.
(L-R) GMA Corporate Affairs AVP Teresa L. Pacis, PRC National Blood Center OIC Dr. Edmundo N. Marra, Chairman of the Board PRC-Quezon City Chapter Dr. Hermogenes D. Jarin, and GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco.
Now on its 7th year, the Kapuso Bloodletting Day is a project of GMA Network’s Corporate Affairs Division in cooperation with the Network’s socio-civic arm, GMA Kapuso Foundation and GMA Regional TV, in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross. The event, which encouraged the entire Kapuso workforce to take part in saving lives by donating blood, was held last February 11 at GMA Network Center in Quezon City. The whole day affair saw employees, officers, artists and even their family and friends taking time out from their daily work activities to participate in the worthy cause. The initiative was also extended nationwide with bloodletting drives held in the regions, namely, Ilocos, Dagupan, Bicol, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and GenSan, on February 14.

“This event was a success, not only because the donations this year surpassed the prior year but also because this huge turnout and continued support is a testament to our solidarity with the Network’s commitment to uplift the lives of our fellow Filipinos,” says GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco.
GMA KAPUSO MAGAZINE |FEBRUARY 2015 ISSUE
“None of this would be possible without the generosity and bravery of each Kapuso donor who believe in and donated to our cause,” she furthers. GMA Corporate Affairs AVP Teresa L. Pacis says this activity is a concrete means by which employees can engage in the Network’s corporate social responsibility efforts. “The annual bloodletting program is an integral part of our CSR platform. We look after the welfare of our employees by encouraging them to mine the health benefits of donating blood. At the same time, we get our employees to actively take part in enriching the lives of our fellowFilipinos.”
