GMA Public Affairs’ longest-running investigative television program Imbestigador presents “COVID-19: Special Investigative Reports ni Mike Enriquez”which brings back Imbestigador to its news-based, investigative roots. COVID-19 has become the worst pandemic the world has ever seen in the past century. It continues to cause an unprecedented global health calamity and it has become the greatest challenge that mankind has collectively faced since World War II.

While people and businesses are grappling with significant adjustments to the socalled “new normal” after more than three months of lockdown, Filipinos need to take a step back to analyze and discuss significant issues related to the pandemic. What happened to the mass testing program? Where did the billions of funds

intended for the COVID-19 response really go? Has the Social Amelioration Program been implemented well enough to support all Filipinos in need? How bad are the economic effects of the crisis to businesses and workforce? What future awaits Filipinos in the new normal?

For the special’s first part, Mike began the investigation with a deep dive into the current state of the transportation sector.

After being suspended for months, public transportation is gradually resuming its operations, although limited. As means of transportation remain few, some commuters have resorted to riding motorcycles and bicycles. Others are even forced to walk for hours to go to work and run errands because they are left without any options to commute. Meanwhile, other public transport drivers still prohibited by the government from plying their regular routes continue to suffer financially. Mike tried to find out if there were any concrete and long-term solutions in the horizon.

“COVID-19: Special Investigative Reports ni Mike Enriquez” continues every Saturday, 4:45 pm after Wish Ko Lang on GMA-7.

Wish Ko Lang! Saturdays | 4 PM | GMA 7

Wish Ko Lang!—one of the most well-loved public service programs on television— returns on air for a special season.

The award-winning program hosted by GMA News pillar Vicky Morales is set to bring hope and inspiration to Filipinos by opening its doors to deserving individuals in this time of great need.

“As the world continues to face the pandemic and its effects on our lives, there is a need for us to be inspired, to be reassured that we will get through this together. We just need to continue to hope. And Wish Ko Lang! aims to spark that hope among the hearts of everyone,” says Vicky.

For July, Sigrid Andrea Bernardo directs the dramatization segments of the episodes. Bernardo is known for the films Kita Kita and Untrue. Some of the Kapuso stars who will grace the program include Prima Donnas mainstays Elijah Alejo and Chanel Latorre.

For its first two episodes, Wish Ko Lang! features the stories of child breadwinner Manny and the construction worker mom Joan.

The program will also be asking viewers to send in their most urgent wishes so these may be featured in future episodes.

NEW NORMAL: THE SURVIVAL GUIDE

GMA Public Affairs is giving a new face to Serbisyong Totoo as it launched its newest program line-up New Normal: The Survival Guide with five different shows last July 20.

New Normal is the country’s first daily magazine program entirely conceptualized with the ‘new normal’ in mind. Born in the age of social distancing, the program capitalizes on technology and user-generated content, welcoming viewers into a virtual home but giving them the same quality of TV programs GMA Public Affairs is known for.

MONDAYS NEWSMAKERS

Ushering in the week is Prof. Winnie Monsod who dives on the most controversial issues and the biggest newsmakers via online video conference. “In the new normal, it is even more important that we have the proper information,” explains Prof. Winnie. “Not false information, but information which is based on data. And this is what I’m trying to do in this show. We talk to the experts, the ones who know the subjects better.”

Viewers are also treated to the less serious side of Prof. Winnie where she uses technology in coping with the new normal and in exploring other things that used to be unfamiliar to senior citizens like her—including gamely trying out the TikTok craze.

TUESDAYS BRIGHT SIDE

Kara David shares light stories and viral content that aims to inspire and provide them more reasons to look at the brighter side of life.

“Ang taas ng anxiety ng mga tao. But that doesn’t mean walang silver lining,” says Kara. “Bright Side looks at the inspiring stories behind this pandemic. Marami kaming story ng bayanihan, taong nag-share ng kanilang blessings, frontliners who continue to sacrifice their time and energy para lang makapaglingkod—everything inspiring na nakakapagpataba ng puso.”

THE CEO’S 2019 REPORT GMA ANNUAL STOCKHOLDERS’ MEETING

In 2019, GMA accelerated the business through its awardwinning election coverage, the breakthrough success of its digital platforms, and original programs making waves here and abroad. Learn more about the Network’s accomplishments and outlook in Atty. Felipe L. Gozon’s report.

JULY 17, 2020

As you all know, we are in the midst of a real-life pandemic movie with a frightening narrative. It started with a silent virus followed by isolation, quarantine, and the search for a vaccine or a cure. The difference is, we do not need to imagine this kind of world. We are living it. It is right outside our doors.

A crisis like this tests us as individuals, as organizations and as countries. It reminds us of what matters most—and the mission that we live for every day. In an industry reeling from lockdowns, social distancing protocols, and suspension of productions, GMA Network is providing a vital service to the Filipinos–superior Entertainment and the responsible, unbiased, and timely delivery of accurate News and Information. This has been our commitment to you in the past, today, and in the years to come. Allow me now to share with you our accomplishments for the past year, our outlook, and how this crisis is creating a new normal for our industry.

The year 2019 was a year of challenges and triumphs. We invested heavily in our digitization project, earned record-high engagement in social media, and grew our presence in emerging platforms. However, the way we experience content has changed rapidly. In the digital space, we are competing not just with other Philippine television networks, but with everyone who publishes content.

I would like to mention one of the things I am proudest of in the past year – our Eleksyon 2019 coverage, the most watched coverage nationwide based on Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. Our News organization carried out the advocacy campaign, Pusuan ang Totoo which earned a Silver prize for “Best Marketing Campaign for News Brand” at the 2019 Asian Digital Media Awards. It is a testament to how we inspired Filipinos to stand for what is true, to fight disinformation, and choose leaders who will truly serve our country.

RATINGS

Now let me walk you through our ratings for 2019. The past year saw competition getting fiercer. Based on Nielsen TV audience measurement:

• While we remained strong in Mega Manila and Urban Luzon, we lost our lead in National Urban TV Audience Measurement or NUTAM.

• But things got better. Towards the end of 2019 we had already reduced the ratings gap and in early 2020, we reclaimed the lead in NUTAM ratings.

• Our Regional TV’s newscasts Balitang Amianan in Metro Dagupan and Balitang Bisdak in Metro Cebu won in 2019, while One Mindanao in Metro Davao has closed the gap against competition.

• In March this year, we kept the lead in the nationwide television ratings despite the recent programming changes in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• GMA Network registered 33.8 percent average total day people audience share while ABS-CBN got 29.4 percent. We also won in all dayparts which include the morning, afternoon, and evening blocks.

• Our news channel, GMA News TV, is consistently neck and neck with TV-5 for the third spot in the ratings game.

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

In terms of financial performance, we entered the previous year from a position of strength.

• Despite the challenges we encountered, we managed to increase our consolidated revenues from the previous year by 8% from P15.236 billion to P16.493 billion. We increased our net income before tax (NIBT) by 13% from P3.332 billion to P3.766 billion. Our net income after tax (NIAT) also increased by 14% from P2.324 billion to P2.639 billion in 2019 over 2018. • Our core business continued to flourish. Advertising revenues contributed 92% to the total revenue of the Network. The main contributor to our success is GMA7. Its revenues were at P13.271 billion, 9% or P1.076 billion more than the same period in 2018. Political advocacies and advertisements worth P711.9 million propelled the growth. Minus this windfall, the Network still managed to surpass the previous year’s recurring sales by P394.3 million or 3%.

• Our radio business continued to grow as well, with recorded sales of P633.6 million. The business unit recorded a 7% improvement in its top line amounting to P41.0 million. While some P24.5 million worth of election-related placements lifted Radio’s top line, recurring sales increased by P21.3 million or 4% from the previous year.

• We had one of our finest years in Regional TV. On top of the ratings improvements, Regional TV sealed the year with combined revenues of P274.2 million, edging previous year by 4% or P10.7 million. • In contrast to our increase in income, we were able to keep our costs down. Total consolidated operating expenses (OPEX) for 2019 was at P12.761 billion, translating into a single-digit increase of 6% from 2018. As a result, EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) was higher by P568.4 million at P5.392 billion, or up by 12% from previous year.

• In 2019, the Network paid P2.2 billion in national and local taxes excluding withholding taxes from its employees, talents, and suppliers amounting to P1.2 billion.

• However, because of COVID-19, in 2020, our topline for the first three months was at P3.5 billion, 7% lower mainly due to election-related inflows from previous year. Net income after tax was at P583 million, likewise lower by 19% compared to 2019. • But despite these temporary financial setbacks, I am pleased to say that – your Company is debt-free as of end-March 2020.

THE NEW NORMAL: To adapt to changing times, GMA Network mounted its first ever virtual Annual Stockholders’ Meeting.

This demonstrates our ability to balance ratings growth with sound financials.

OTHER BUSINESS UNITS & SUBSIDIARIES

In the international front, airtime advertising through GMA Pinoy TV, sealed the period at P72.0 million, 9% more than that of 2018. Revenues from subscription income are at P1.057 billion.

We have closely worked with our partnercarriers to make our programs available across all traditional and digital platforms, in both linear and non-linear formats. Our dramas have also proven their universal appeal as they continue to be popular among viewers in countries like Kenya and Dominican Republic. According to data from African surveying platform Geopoll, English-dubbed versions of several GMA programs airing in Kenya exceeded expected figures for primetime viewership.

This only shows that our dramas’ unique storylines, universal themes and values make them relatable to foreign audience and help boost the ratings of broadcasters in different territories. Today’s GMA International channels are distributed in over 90 countries through our partnership with over 40 carriers.

Our digital arm, GMA New Media, continued its strong growth trajectory, with online advertisements breaching the P500-million mark, equivalent to a 62% increase from the previous year. Through the collaborative efforts of various groups within the Network, it achieved triple digital ad revenue growth which is expected to rise even more moving forward.

Revenues from Alta Productions went up by 13 percent versus the previous year while revenues from Script2010 increased by one percent.

On the other hand, GMA Music posted a 24 percent decline in revenues.

In 2019, we partnered with PLDT-Smart to introduce innovative offerings that will cement our position as the country’s leading broadcast network and revolutionize the TV viewing experience in the Philippines. The combination of our capabilities brings together great direct-to-consumer business with our world-class content creation expertise. Together, we aim to deliver the best products and experiences to our Kapuso viewers.

On June 26, we marked another milestone in our digital journey – the launch of our digital set-top box or the Affordabox. This allows our viewers to see digitally broadcast images, hear better quality sound, and receive a wider range of channels. Affordabox offers unique services such as data casting and emergency warning broadcast system – all for a price of only P888.

Lastly, I would also like to inform all of you that last July 15, GMA Network paid out P1.458 billion (net of treasury shares) total cash dividends or P0.30 per share to

shareholders of record as of June 24, 2020. Mga Kapuso, in the next months and years we will see a transformation of the broadcast industry. It will be challenging, but also filled with opportunities to enrich the lives of Filipinos. With your support, we can weather these trying times.

BUONG PUSO PARA SA PILIPINO

For 70 years, we have created timely and timeless stories. Every day, our journalists deliver news that Filipinos care about the most. Through our programs, our artists capture the country’s imagination with meaningful stories. These are the bedrock of our future – every journalist, every artist, everyone behind the camera, and you, our dear shareholders. Earlier I said we are in a real-life pandemic movie. But what makes a great science fiction movie is humanity’s triumph over darkness. It is when a sense of community powers people and when fighting for good emerges. With superheroes like our front liners, and our own journalists who brave the world to provide accurate and objective information, humanity will prevail.
