GMA News and Public Aff airs Team Meets

2019 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Ravish Kumar

The discussion with Ravish Kumar (center) was facilitated by documentarist and GMA Vice President for Professional Development Howie Severino (seventh from left ). Joining the discussion were GMA Assistant Vice President for News and Public Aff airs Digital Media Jaemark Tordecilla (third from right), as well as Kapuso journalists Atom Araullo, Dano Tingcungco, (not in photo) Raff y Tima and Mariz Umali, together with Queenie Dimapawi, Patty Gutierrez, Raff y Jimenez, and Lou Albano.

D

eclaring he was among the most trolled journalists in India, 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Ravish Kumar (center) came to the Philippines feted like a hero. He visited GMA Network two days after the awarding ceremony to interact with GMA journalists and give them fair warning that the populist authoritarian wave sweeping the world was far from over, and journalists needed to stand their ground in the face of threats and the spread of fake news. One of India’s most influential TV journalists, Kumar is currently the managing editor at New Delhi Television Network. He shared that his show in India has proven that one can rate and appeal to a large audience with serious, relevant content.

Kumar is known for tough questioning, at a time when many journalists in his country, he says, are trying to curry favor with the government. Government officials have reacted by boycotting his show. In an extraordinarily brave act, Kumar wrote an open letter to their prime minister Narendra Modi, denouncing the death threats against Kumar by government supporters. (L-R) GMA Consultant for Radio Operations Mike Enriquez, Ravish Kumar, and Vice President for Professional Development Howie Severino at the DZBB booth

His interview program features subjects that many mainstream shows and stations shy away from, including minorities, lower-caste people, and even the repulsive livelihood of septic cleaning (or “manual scavenging”).

The Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation selected Kumar for his “unfaltering commitment to a professional, ethical journalism of the highest standards; his moral courage in standing up for truth, integrity and independence; and his principled belief that it is in giving full and respectful voice to the voiceless, that journalism fulfills its noblest aims to advance democracy.”

Tahanan ko na talaga ang GMA. Kung mayroong through thick and thin ika nga, lahat ng napagdaanan kong mabibigat, they’ve been very supportive of me, regardless of any situation,” he said. Paolo is considered a household name in the entertainment industry. esting other entries from around the globe, Reel Time’s “Batang Maestro” won the highly-coveted Gold Dolphin award under the Current Affairs, Human Concerns and Social Issues category at the 10th Cannes Corporate Media and TV Awards in France on September 27. This is GMA Network’s first-ever Cannes award, which recognizes the very best in corporate media and TV. “Batang Maestro” is an episode of GMA News TV’s Reel Time, which featured the story of 12-year-old Dagul and his fellow volunteer ‘little teachers’ in the province of Sorsogon. They cross the Donsol river on board a bamboo raft to reach fellow children in remote areas who have difficulty reading because they are often absent from classes.

Despite his own struggles at home, Dagul pursues his volunteer work to bring pride and honor to his mother, his very first teacher. Giving honor to the country as well is the bimonthly documentary program The Atom Araullo Specials, which was shortlisted for its “No Leftovers: A Food Waste Trail” episode. The episode showed that food wastage remains a big problem in the Philippines. It traces how food is wasted from production to consumption. GMA Network is home to the most internationally-awarded Philippine documentary programs. This year’s Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards listed almost 1,000 submissions from 51 countries.

The results of the ComGuild Awards were based on the votes of the 72 members of the Board of Judges from different schools and universities across the country.
