Last July, the GMA News and Public Affairs’ pioneering mobile journalism newscast recorded a total of 22.3 million views on Facebook via its official page. Launched just this year, SFT’s FB page currently has almost 200,000 followers to date.

Meanwhile, Nico Waje’s exclusive stories “Ex-Policemen Project: Illegal Construction sa Watershed” and “Baklas sa Baras: Illegal Construction, Binaklas na!” recorded 723,000 combined views. It includes timeline and the Philippines’ parallelism with other countries and reports given by the World Health Organization.

On top of these special features and exclusive reports, some of the mostwatched SFT stories on Facebook include Mj Geronimo’s “Women’s Desk: No Police Escort” aired last July 9, which earned 1.8 million views.

Rounding off the most-viewed stories last month is Jairo Bolledo’s report “Patay Pero Gumaling sa COVID-19” which has 930,000 views.

Our taping had to stop. The telling of the beautiful story of Prima Donnas stopped. Ngayon, with the airing of the recap, we can refresh everyone’s memory. DZBB AND DWLS Tuscany Condominium in Ayala Avenue, the then tallest building in Makati and the first residential condominium building in the Philippines; and other business ventures.”

2. From the beginning, news and public affairs were at the heart of radio With a nation then crippled from World War II, GMA knew that radio could help the nation recover through information. While other radio stations aired soap operas, musicals, and American serials, Stewart aired local newscasts the lifeblood of the station. He was after all a United Press correspondent who knew the value of closer-to-home news and information. GMA Network was founded by Robert La Rue Stewart in 1950 as Republic Broadcasting System (RBS) with flagship AM radio station DZBB

1. DZBB was founded by a journalist and visionary American war correspondent Robert “Bob” Stewart tinkered with a used transmitter on March 1, 1950 and sent out the first static-marred newscast from Escolta. According to Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, “Uncle Bob was a very resourceful and visionary businessman. He was very good at conceptualizing and starting new businesses. Thus, he started radio

station DZBB in a small room in Escolta using surplus equipment in 1950 and in 1961, Channel 7, again using secondhand transmitter and equipment. He established Tropical Airways, probably the first helicopter leasing company in the Philippines; Pana Pizza (before Shakeys, D’Marks, Pizza Hut, Greenwich, etc., invaded our shores); Panacraft which engaged in retail store operations long before the retail giants came about; Hertz Rent-a-Car thru Executive Cars before renting cars became fashionable; Makati

3. DZBB was the first to use telephone live for onthe-spot interviews The station set records with its coverage of the Hibok-Hibok volcano eruption on Camiguin island and the sensational Manila mayoralty elections where for the first time, telephones were used for on the spot telephone interviews. The following year, DZBB delivered a round-the-clock coverage of the presidential election, which was won by Ramon Magsaysay.

Congress and Senate sessions-on-air were a brainchild of DZBB While we see legislative hearings on TV and online, did you know that it was DZBB who blazed the trails by putting Congress and Senate sessions on air? The program was called Congressional Hour and was broadcast nightly from ten to midnight. Congressional Hour became Francisco “Soc” Rodrigos’s platform for delivering incisive analyses of political developments. Inviting politicians from Liberal and Nacionalista parties, the debates became a platform for listeners to understand their campaigns. Advertising guru JJ Calero in his book on Philippine advertising movers and shakers, wrote: “That debate put DZBB on the map. Both families brought in their supporters which got Escolta filled…DZBB stayed to be noticed by the listening public and the advertisers.”

5. Even before Sesame street, DZBB had its own well-loved educational program Eskwelahang Munti preceded Sesame Street by a decade was a workshop-on-air type of show that engaged kids in declamation, acting, and singing activities in the 60s. Anchored by Tinno Lapus, the homegrown children’s show honed the talents of countless performers who would later enjoy the spotlight in the movies, stage, or recording business. Lapus himself became president of FAMAS, the local motion picture academy, and the Radio-TV Federation of the Philippines.

Other radio legends include Ike Lozada, Eddie Ilarde notable for his program Napakasakit Kuya Eddie, and Barr Samson. The station also gave the careers of formidable radio talents German Moreno, Inday Badiday, and Manolo Favis a chance to take off.

Atty. Gozon said, “Going back to the early beginnings of the network, did you know that the call letters of our FM radio station, LS, in DWLS FM, stands for Loreto Stewart? Loreto was the Filipina wife of Channel 7’s founder, Bob Stewart. From its journalist founder, today’s GMA Radio is headed by GMA News Pillar and multi-awarded Mike Enriquez. Mike has led Radio’s growth and continued success with both DZBB and DWLS as the Number 1 AM and FM station in Mega Manila. “I always tell the people I work with, in radio and TV, ‘No, no, no, all of that supposed thinking out of the box is old hat. Get rid of the box! When it comes to throwing ideas around, the sky’s the limit,” Mike says. Under his leadership, DZBB created Dobol B sa News TV which airs the country’s biggest news and commentaries simultaneously via AM radio and free television – “Radyo na, TV pa!” With the pandemic hitting home, Dobol B Sa News TV has been one of the nation’s source of credible and balanced news on both platforms.

MIKE ENRIQUEZ AND HIS PASSION FOR RADIO:

IT’S MY CALLING B Y C H E S C A V I S TA L

W

hen GMA News pillar and awardwinning broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez started working in GMA in 1995, it only had four radio stations. Twenty five years later, the Network has now grown into operating and managing 24 stations nationwide under his leadership. He proudly shared that such achievement was one of the highlights of his years in GMA. But of course, he also knows that quality always topples quantity. “Nowadays, it’s no longer a question of how big you are in terms of stations. It’s the quality of service and quality of business that you conduct as a network—radio or television,” said Mike who is not only the main DZBB anchor but is also the president of RGMA who oversees the radio business of our Network. Super Radyo DZBB 594, GMA Network’s flagship AM station is the number one AM radio station and news source in Mega Manila. DZBB relentlessly delivers the latest news, important announcements, and information amidst the pandemic via the daily Bantay COVID-19 Special Coverage in addition to its programs seen on TV via Dobol B sa News TV.

The Kapuso flagship FM station DWLSFM, also known as Barangay LS 97.1, is likewise number one and is improving its performance every month as listeners enjoy the company of the quirky Barangay LS DJs and the day’s all-hits music line-up. For Mike, recognitions and good ratings performance are because of the people behind every program. These are people of integrity whose mission is to deliver the truth to the Filipino. A newsman for five decades and a loyal Kapuso for 25 years now, Mike currently headlines Super Balita sa Umaga Nationwide and Saksi sa Dobol B which air both on radio and TV via Dobol B sa News TV. On top of his radio work, he coanchors our primetime newscast 24 Oras and hosts Imbestigador. In between his program schedules, he puts on his other hat as the President of RGMA and head of the Network’s radio business which is composed of more than 600 people from all over the country. For him, that’s also equivalent to over 600 families that depend on them.

“In GMA, there are many talented people. In the department or business unit that I’m responsible for, I tell our officers that aside from the talent and the professionalism and the work ethics, aside from the IQ, I want you to give just as much importance to the EQ. In short, without meaning to sound mushy, a Kapuso is somebody who has heart or a heart for the audience, for the listeners, viewers. We wake up in the morning, and will go to sleep at night for them. And even the young ones who are about to enter the industry, they must realize that. We are not here for ourselves. The moment we think we are, that’s the beginning of our end. That probably also explains kung bakit 50 years na ako as a broadcaster.” It is truly an understatement to say that Mike is passionate about his work—he doesn’t even call it as such. “I don’t consider this a job. I consider this a vocation—a calling.” His years of experience have made Mike grounded and made him realize how this has become his calling. He would always tell aspiring broadcasters to have passion for their work and, most of all, have a passion for truth. “I don’t see my legacy as being ‘He was like this, he was like that. This is what he accomplished, this is what he built.’ I’d like my legacy to be the people that I mentor, the people I worked with, the people that I partnered with. I want to be able to be known as, ‘I worked with that guy. I learned from that guy. I learned values from that guy. I learned techniques from my job with that guy.’ And with the continued success of RGMA, it is not far-fetched to say that Mike Enriquez has been able to achieve his goal of touching people’s lives through his passion for radio.
