WE CAN DO MORE
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Curley,
What makes a school successful? Surely it is graduation rates, and moving students on to their next stage of education and life. Success is also in programs that accomplish their goals, and develop talents over a defined course of time. Success can be found in a sport season, or in an enjoyable concert or play. Success can be reported in financial goals reached, and projects completed. This Annual Report will certainly share such successes. But is there something more?
For a school like Curley, I think the mission’s ultimate success is in a series of characteristics that are difficult to measure. How does one measure spiritual growth, the acceptance of values which makes one act rightly, or growth in maturity? A student can get a good grade on a test, but what makes one a lifelong learner? What makes a person put their faith into action, and reach out in service to others? What develops creative thinking that leads to innovative outcomes? What leads to a graduate having positive memories, a sense of brotherhood with his fellow graduates, and a desire to share with those who follow him?
This year’s Annual Report, with the theme “Their Success is Our Success,” hopes to present some biographical vignettes that suggest those intangibles are, indeed, being accomplished. I trust you will find them of interest, and that you will also know that your support of the Curley mission is bearing fruit. Also included is the new Strategic Plan for 2022-2025, approved by the School Board in May, and setting an ambitious set of goals for continued success in the Curley mission.
On behalf of the Curley Family, and particularly the students who were part of this institution for the past year, I want to thank every donor, everyone who shared in these various successes. We are so grateful for all who helped the school reach new goals, who are helping the physical upgrades to the building to take place, and who invest their time, talent and treasure in making Curley work year-after-year. Each of you is a blessing, and we continue to pray and trust that God will bless you for what you do for others. Curley’s success is thanks to your support, and I hope you will value the success of each student and graduate with a sense of personal pride and appreciation.
Peace!

Dear Friends,
It is my privilege to thank the members of the School Board for their dedicated and creative service during this past year, and, for those completing their tenure, for many years of service. For myself, the past seven years have seen the school face a number of challenges, particularly the pandemic, but then to thrive in many ways. This first full year of the Endowment under the direct control of its own Trustees has proven beneficial for the school, and we are confident that will be the case into the future. The continuing improvements and maintenance to the school plant and grounds protect against a deferred maintenance issue that neglected buildings often face. Finally, the school’s new Strategic Plan for the years 2022-2025, approved by the Board at its May meeting, provides objectives and goals that are both realistic and ambitious.
I would also like to thank, on behalf of the Board, the faculty and staff for their dedication to the Curley mission, and particularly for the flexibility and adapting that were necessary during the pandemic.
The Board also extends its thanks to all of Curley’s donors, alumni, parents and friends, whose support reached new heights this past year. The school’s successes, and the successes of its students and graduates, are thanks to the dedication of the larger Curley Family. Please continue to be involved, offer support, and ensure further success for Curley and its young men.
Sincerely, Michael F. Brockmeyer, ’70 School Board Chair

With the support of the entire Archbishop Curley Family, each Curley Man is challenged to reach his maximum academic and personal potential in a safe and nurturing environment leading him to be a man of faith, character, discipline and service to others.
THEIR SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM,
Since its inception in 1961, Archbishop Curley High School has fostered an academic program that engages young men to grow mentally and spiritually while instilling the virtues of becoming a Curley Man.
Archbishop Curley has a rich academic tradition steeped in the Franciscan spirit. The rigorous academic program spans across nine departments, each offering students a variety of courses that establish organization and structure, along with communicating clear learning objectives, throughout the course work. Each discipline challenges the young men and provides them opportunities that fit their needs and interests. With a comprehensive offering of AP courses, elective classes, along with new bio technology and electrical vehicle engineering classes, Curley’s students continue to be challenged in the
classroom. The purpose of each course is to keep the student intrinsically motivated, establish personal and real-world relevance, and provide hands-on opportunities for learning. AP courses are challeng ing, and provide an opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Curley also continues to build relationships with local colleges and universities to offer online courses, providing students a college experience during their time at Archbishop Curley. The two pieces that are at the forefront of a successful and robust academic program are the support of a dedicated faculty and
a community of engaged students. That combination makes the program more than the sum of its parts.
To quote one student: “I know my teachers care about me because they are here early, stay late and are always willing to help. They don’t just give answers but they listen to the question and help me identify the best way to solve the problem or find the solution.” The Archbishop Curley academic experience leaves a legacy where one can say “their success is our success.”

“The young men at Curley are the future. We instill in them the charism of a Franciscan education that provides them the tools and skills necessary to think independently in order to change the world for the better. I am impressed by Curley’s faculty and their desire to continue to develop as professional educators. They really care about their students.”

“Choosing to come to Curley has been the best decision of my life. The teachers, coaches, and staff genuinely care about not only my studies and athletic performance but my well-being as an individual. When one is immersed in a community that is so connected and caring, it truly makes a difference. It is much easier to perform in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and even in life when one knows he has support.
For me, the Curley family is my support, and for that, I am forever grateful. Curley will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Joe Nwobi ’18
“Every effect starts with a cause and every purpose starts with a reason, with a little bit of motivation. For me, my path toward success started with one phrase, ‘Welcome to Archbishop Curley High School, Where Brotherhood Begins.’ Archbishop Curley gives students the knowledge and confidence to go achieve their highest aspirations in whatever area. Thanks to the excellent teachers in the classroom and the outstanding coaches on the field who constantly provide wisdom and motivation, students and athletes become better than their previous selves. In my case, my dream to have an immense impact in the medical world can now be a reality. I attended the University of Delaware and graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences, majoring in Medical Diagnostics and minoring in Biological Sciences, which is no easy feat. It requires a lot of time commitment, previous knowledge with the ability to utilize it effectively, and a lot of confidence. Luckily, I was able to receive a solid foundation at Archbishop Curley that followed me to UD, now to different medical device companies, and hopefully to many different places. You don’t have to worry about achieving success in the future while at Archbishop Curley, it’s already written in the staffs’ curriculum to ensure that students come out of Archbishop Curley a different and better man, a Curley Man.”

THEIR SUCCESS ON THE JOB,
Success can be as broad as defining and achieving goals in the workplace. It can be leaving one’s comfort zone to take on something new or working with different people. Success can be working one’s way into a leadership position or working fluidly with a large team to achieve a specific goal.
At Curley the student is prepared for his future from the moment he steps rough the doors. With the support of the entire Archbishop Curley Family, each Curley Man is challenged to reach his maximum academic and professional goals. That support is also the driving force leading the Curley man to be a man of faith, character, discipline and service to others
he true measure of student success is how well students are prepared to accomplish their current and future academic, personal, and professional goals through the development of knowledge, a sense of responsibility and self-reliance, and a connection to the college and wider community

“Curley was an integral part of my personal development during some of the most formative years in my life. You see, my three brothers and I were raised by a single mom, and while she was doing an amazing job, she recognized that I needed positive male role models in my life, men who would espouse and hold me accountable to the values of integrity, excellence, hard work and development of my faith. While I did not fully embrace and experience them until my college years and thereafter, I recognize that Curley helped implant and reinforce those attributes. That, in turn, helped me build the confidence and conviction that I had some God given gifts that could be cultivated to serve others.”

“The skills I learned during my time at Curley have formed the basis to help me be successful in my career.
Beyond the formal education I received, I rely heavily upon the time management and prioritization skills
I picked up while balancing academics, sports, theater and other extracurricular activities.
“The advancement of technology and the increasing demands on the workers of today require efficient management of information and personal energy. While undoubtedly more complicated than what I experienced during high school, I very much recognize the parallel association between organizing priorities then and now. I am grateful for having been required to cultivate those invaluable, but often overlooked, skills at Curley.”
Charlie McGuire ’83
Senior Director, Actuarial and Analytics, Travelers
“My Curley experience prepared me well for college and beyond. The academic curriculum made my transition to college a seamless one. But over the years I’ve come to better understand and appreciate the Curley values and life lessons that were just as important as the academics, if not more important. My teachers and the Friars reinforced the benefits of discipline, respect, and hard work. They also helped me develop valuable skills that I use to this day, including written and oral communication, teamwork, and time management.”

THEIR SUCCESS IN THE COMMUNITY,
Outreach to the marginalized is one of the fundamental Franciscan ideals taught and lived at Curley.
As the handbook states: “St. Francis of Assisi saw Christ in the poor and those abandoned by society, desiring to serve them by being in solidarity with them. We commit ourselves to thinking first of those who are less fortunate than we are.” Students are required to offer service hours, and to reflect on their experiences, so they appreciate their blessings and understand the impact they can have on others. Living as St. Francis did, and putting others before oneself, can be deeply meaningful. This is a lesson the Curley Man is encouraged to learn, to value, and to take with him into the community.

“Every day, Monday through Friday I walk into the Franciscan Center and into my office to sit down and start my work for the day. Behind me is the San Damiano Cross, the same cross I saw daily as a Curley Student 12+ years ago.
I am currently the Development and Marketing Director, Franciscan Center of Baltimore, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi that started all the way back in 1880.
My job here is to continue the good work that was started over 140 years ago, to tell the story of the Center, and to raise funds to help continue the mission of providing emergency assistance and supportive outreach to persons who are economically disadvantaged.

Doctor’s Without Borders
“The combination of a Catholic education at Curley and my Ukrainian heritage were essential in my desire to participate in the fundraising event for Doctors Without Borders. My career as a food scientist helped me to perfect a recipe for medivka, a traditional Ukrainian honey liqueur, and to partner with Baltimore Spirits Company, for the fundraiser. The people of Ukraine have been suffering since the unwarranted Russian invasion. I wanted to do something to help ease their pain.”
My time at Curley instilled in me those Franciscan values of service to the poor and marginalized, affirmation of the unique worth of each person, reverence for all creation, and so on.”
Josh Sutherland ’93
Chief Financial Officer, House of Ruth
“Archbishop Curley gave me a great start in my professional career. The accounting class was enjoyable and kept me engaged and interested, and a lot of that credit would fall to the teacher, Mr. Popera. I have great memories of that class and of Curley.
My career has taken me to working at The House of Ruth Maryland which was founded in 1977, and leads the fight to end violence against women and their children by confronting the attitudes, behaviors and systems that perpetuate it, and by providing victims with the services necessary to rebuild their lives safely and free of fear. In each of these opportunities, the work is challenging and difficult due to budget restraints and other factors, but working for a non-profit provides unique opportunities to expand your interests and skills. I never imagined I would one day oversee not only accounting and finance but also facilities, information technology, and our compliance team. Curley’s education and community helped me grow into a person that values hard work and service.
I enjoyed my time at Curley so much, ultimately we were able to send my son there, who graduated in 2021 and is now doing great at Temple University in Philadelphia.”

FROM THE CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN
Dear Friends,
With this Annual Report we will conclude an annual update on the capital campaign and its donors. Therefore, for the last time I extend thanks to all of the campaign’s supporters on behalf of the committee for Renewing Our Future. I also acknowledge the support and dedication of the campaign committee, and the staff of Curley’s Advancement Office for their invaluable support. I know a recognition reception is being planned for the donors, and I look forward to offering personal thanks to you.
This summer the last major phase of the new HVAC system for the academic building was completed, not to mention all the support that has been offered to financial aid and other upgrades for the classrooms. For the first time the 2022-23 school year will be in a fully climate-controlled building! Campaigns take a long time, from planning, to obtaining pledges, to collecting those pledges. Curley’s many supporters have stayed strong throughout this time, and all donors should be proud of what has been accomplished.
Curley is truly blessed to have so many faithful alumni, friends and donors who support the school and its mission. Please continue your support, to assure that the mission remains viable for generations to come.

CURLEY Annual Report of Gifts I 2021-202214
OUR FRANCISCAN IDEALS
DEDICATION TO CHRIST IN THE CHURCH
• St. Francis of Assisi was dedicated to a perfect following of Christ that would rebuild the Church from within.
• We commit ourselves to embracing Christ and witnessing that within our Church communities.
STRONG COMMUNITY RELATIONS
• St. Francis of Assisi was overjoyed that God gave him brothers to share his life.
• We commit ourselves to creating a brotherhood among our classmates and a sense of Family within our school.
OUTREACH TO THE MARGINALIZED
• St. Francis of Assisi saw Christ in the poor and those abandoned by society, desiring to serve them by being in solidarity with them.
• We commit ourselves to thinking first of those who are less fortunate than we are.
CONCERN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
• St. Francis of Assisi saw all of creation as a holy gift from God to be cherished.
• We commit ourselves to being grateful stewards of all that God has given us.
PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF CONFLICT
• St. Francis of Assisi recognized that it is better to understand than to be understood.
• We commit ourselves to appreciating our differences by seeking first to understand others.

Michael J. Curley Legacy Trust
Members of the Michael J. Curley Legacy Trust have expressed their commitment to Archbishop Curley High School through a very special and important form of financial support.
These donors have named Curley as the ultimate beneficiary of a planned gift. Such gifts might include a bequest and/or charitable income gifts such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts. Donors can make a gift of life insurance by making Curley the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of a policy.
Your membership involves no dues, obligations, or solicitations, but it does allow us to thank you and recognize you for the plans you have made, and it may inspire generosity in others.
How It Works
• Include a bequest to Archbishop Curley High School in your will or trust.
• Make your bequest unrestricted or direct it to a specific purpose.
• Indicate a specific amount, or a percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or trust.
Benefits
• Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime.
• You can modify your gift to address changing circumstances.
• You can direct your gift to a particular purpose (be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended).
• Remembering Archbishop Curley High School in one’s will provides a gift that will make an impact for years to come.
