A Letter from the President Dear Friends of Curley: The pages of this Annual Report tell a marvelous story of more than a thousand people!

More than a thousand people who in one way or another have helped our beloved school to thrive this past year. More than a thousand people who have contributed time, work, or money and in many cases all three because they believe in what happens here at Archbishop Curley High School. I say a very heartfelt thank you to each and every person who has helped sustain and further the mission of developing young men inspired to embody the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi.

There are many words that can be used to describe why so many would choose to help the Friars, Administration, Faculty and Staff in our daily efforts on behalf of the young men of Curley. But the word that I am most inclined to use about all of you who have contributed to our success this past year is loyal. I see it in all of the people who are highlighted in this year’s Annual Report who were chosen to represent all of you.

I am inspired by people like the Waldts and Wittmans who have long ago graduated or whose sons long ago graduated, but who nonetheless, because of their loyal commitment to Curley, continue to be present and helpful in so many ways. The efforts of our current parent volunteers like Suzanne Feltz and the Friar “C” Club members are incredible. All of the parent volunteers who help the parent support organizations are integral to our success. Equally important though for our long-term success is how our younger alumni are also taking their place where more veteran alumni have led the way. The long-term vitality of any organization is dependent on new and youthful participation so as to ensure our future. So is our ability to keep a Curley education affordable to as many as possible through the effort of people like the Aquias who established a named scholarship in memory of a loved one. Together the loyal support of so many in so many different ways is what helps us keep Curley the beacon it is in the community.

So again I say thank you to all whose names are inscribed in this report for your very loyal and generous support of Curley. As a school I say to you we need your continued support today, tomorrow, and every day in whatever way you are able. I also ask for others to join us in supporting Curley. There is indeed strength in numbers with each person doing what they can for the causes that make a difference in our lives. May the Lord bless you for all that you have done and, through your loyal support, help us sustain a very bright future as well.

A Letter from the School Board Chair Dear Friends, Each year as the Annual Report is published, I am reminded of all the good people who make the daily work of Archbishop Curley High School possible. Along with the entire membership of the School Board, I extend my thanks to those who gave of themselves this past year to allow our school to live its mission.

I commend the school personnel – administrators, teachers and staff – for a job well done. They worked on the daily task of educating Curley Men and helping them grow intellectually, spiritually and physically. Their work, and that of those who served the school community in the past, continues to make Curley the effective school that it is.

I am also pleased with the work of the Board, in collaboration with the school’s many constituencies, in formulating the school’s strategic plan. This long-term vision for the school addresses critical areas of school life and will keep us focused on specific objectives designed to meet our needs, both now and in the future. The plan is robust and I am pleased with the progress we have seen thus far.

My sincere gratitude also extends to those donors listed in these pages. You continue to help us satisfy our mission through your generous dedication to the school. We as a community are fortunate that so many thoughtful people believe in what our school does.

I am certain that you give because your life, and the lives of people you love, has been influenced for the better because of Archbishop Curley High School. I am also grateful to those who gave of their time and talent to allow Curley to thrive.

In the Archbishop Curley High School Annual Report, one might overlook the “PP” behind so many donors’ names. This designates the donor as a member of “Patry’s Pride,” a group of donors that have given to the Annual Fund for ten or more consecutive years. This loyalty to the school is an important part of the support that makes the Curley Family a reality. Giving back so that others may benefit is what Patry’s Pride is all about.

Gerard Waldt, a Curley alum from 1974, was one of five brothers to attend Curley. He and his wife, Barb sent their son to Curley as well (Gerard ’03.) In addition, three nephews, a cousin, and his two sons are Curley men. “With that family tradition,” says Gerard, “it is only natural to support Curley as much as possible.”

Gerard and Barb are familiar faces around school, even though their son graduated ten years ago. They chaired the Curley Gala in 2003, participated on the planning committee, and regularly attend the event.

Gerard was part of Curley’s 50th Anniversary committee and can be seen cheering from the sidelines at football and soccer games. Barb is a volunteer in the Advancement Office when called upon. Gerard looks forward to playing with his brothers and son in the annual Targarona Memorial Golf Tournament every June.

Gerard and Barb are members of Patry’s Pride. Their loyal support of the Annual Fund assists with regular operating expenses that are not covered by tuition. It is their commitment to the Annual Fund that helps Curley to provide the educational opportunities for students who want to become Curley men. Gerard sums it up well: “I am proud to be a Curley alumnus and I want to see Curley succeed for many generations to come.”

Bob and Bernie Wittman Alumni Parents “I believe in the Francisan Friars and the quality education the school provides. Curley gives young men a chance to excel.”

Bob and Bernie Wittman have not had a son at Curley since 1987.

Yet there they are, cheering on the football team during Homecoming or attending the Memorial Mass. For these alumni parents, being part of the Curley Family is a life-long commitment.

The parents of two Curley alumni, Bob ’86 and Brian ’87, Mr. and Mrs. Wittman have been active in the life of the school from the moment their oldest son enrolled. Bernie was involved in the Parents’ Guild and helped prepare the food and drink following the meetings.

Bob helped paint classrooms in the early 1980’s. They built relationships with the other parents they met through Curley and are still close with many of them today. In fact, they regularly meet for lunch or dinner with those friends from Curley and, much like their sons do at their class reunions, they share stories of their days at Curley. Once a year, Bob and Bernie participate in the annual Ocean City Retreat that was started by Fr. Dennis Jaworek, OFM Conv. more than 20 years ago.

“I believe in what Curley does for young people,” Bob is quick to state. “I believe in the Francisan Friars and the quality education the school provides.” Bernie adds, “Curley gives young men a chance to excel.”

They continue to support Curley in many ways including financial gifts to the Capital Campaign, Annual Fund, and Gala. Moreover, they have always been cheerleaders for the school, spreading the message of the value of a Curley education to everyone they meet. They are also an example to alumni parents that the connection to the Curley Family does not end at their sons’ graduation.

Suzanne Feltz Current Parent Volunteer “I like to be involved and I want to do things that make Curley better.”

Suzanne Feltz considers the hours she spends volunteering at Curley as her “fun time.” “I really enjoy it because I get to leave behind any work or home worries,” she states. Feltz is also quick to point out another benefit that comes with helping at Curley. “I can’t tell you how many new friends my husband and I have met from our involvement at the school.”

Feltz, whose son Zachary is a member of the Class of 2016, donates her time at least once a week working in the school’s bookstore throughout the year. In addition, she serves on the Parents’ Guild as the Sophomore Class Representative and is on the planning committee for one of Curley’s most important annual events, Open House.

Her reasons for being so active at her son’s school are simple. “I like to be involved and I want to do things that make Curley better,” she explains. “It also helps me to know what’s going on in the life of the school.”

The only negative that Feltz can find with Curley being like a second home is what to do after her son graduates. “I’m worried about what I’m going to do two years from now…I’ll be bored!”

Daniel Flanagan ’07 Young Alumni Volunteer

As a Curley student, Daniel Flanagan was an active member of many co-curiculars that included the CORD, It’s Academic, the Debate Club and The Curley Chronicle. After graduation in 2007, Dan attended the University of Baltimore where his law career, and his “giving back” began. He helped other students as a tutor and was editor-in-chief of “The UB Post.” Thanks to having taken Advanced Placement courses at Curley, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Jurisprudence in three years and in 2010 he started at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. There he competed as part of the Moot Court Board and the National Trial Team through which he learned trial techniques from a Curley alumnus, Professor Jerome Deise '65. In 2013, he earned a Juris Doctor and became a law clerk to The Honorable Shirley M. Watts, the first female African-American judge to serve on the Court of Appeals of Maryland, the state’s highest court.

This year Dan started coaching the Mock Trial Team at Curley, succeeding his mentor, Professor Deise, in this role. When asked about giving back to his alma mater, Dan replied, “Before I attended Curley, I spoke hesitantly. I rarely made eye contact and I looked at the ground while walking. After graduating from Curley, I spoke assertively, I looked others in the eye and I kept my eyes on what was ahead, both while walking and in general. Simply put, Curley instilled in me a sense of confidence that has benefited me throughout college, law school, and my career. I hope that, through my coaching and the invaluable leadership of moderator Friar Douglas McMillan, Curley’s Trial Team will give students confidence that will be an asset in any career path.”

Just Starting Out Young Alumni Giving Back

The older we get, the more we resemble our parents. As teenagers, nothing seems scarier. The truth is that the lessons we learn from them – through their words and actions – shape us into the adults we are.

For one particular group of young alumni, seeing their parents’ generosity toward Curley has rubbed off on them. They have started giving back to the school just as they are starting to forge their own independence. Ryan ’03, Jesse ’06, and Jordan Kolodziejski ’08, Justin Heddinger ’06, Jason Kremer ’08, and Keith Hardesty ’06 reunited in the spring when they organized a table for the Curley Gala. Some of them worked the event during their student years and some had attended in the past, but this was the first time they participated as a group. “It was a night of laughs, a couple of drinks, and bidding on random things…it was like winning the lottery,” notes Jesse.

For most of them, they were witness to their parents’ support of this event in the past as regular Gala attendees. “It has always been what my father taught me – The Curley Way,” states Jordan when speaking of his father Gerard Kolodziejski ’73. Justin adds, “The school gave so much to me and my bother (Ryan ’12) who just graduated. It amplified what my parents taught me about life.” These sentiments speak to a growing appreciation of the important role the school played in the formation of these young men. “Funny,” Jesse reflects, “looking back on it you don’t appreciate the education you received until you compare it to what others received.”

Ryan, the oldest of the Kolodziejski boys, echoes his brothers.

“Ultimately I saw how much my Dad sacrificed working six days a week to give us a great education,” he says. “I am happy to give back to Curley.” For Ryan and his two younger brothers it was also a night for them to say thank you to their parents. When the time came during the verbal auction to bid on the Couch Potato Package (50” TV, sound bar, and Blu-ray player), the paddles were raised at their table. They pitched in to buy the items for their parents.

Tony ’91 & Karen Aquia The Salvatore Aquia Memorial Wrestling Scholarship

The Salvatore Aquia Memorial Wrestling Scholarship was established in 2005 in honor of the Class of 1997 graduate who died tragically in the same year. Sal was an outstanding wrestler and good student at Curley who continued his career on the mat at the University of Maryland.

Tony ’91, with the help of his wife Karen, is committed to keeping his brother’s memory alive through this endowed scholarship. “We want to turn a negative into a positive by giving another kid the opportunity that Sal had,” he says. The Salvatore Aquia Memorial Wrestling Scholarship is awarded each year to an incoming freshman who is an exemplary student-athlete that excels in wrestling.

The couple wants to make sure that the scholarship continues to grow so that more kids are impacted by it. Over the last eight years, with the help of family and friends, The Sal Aquia “Man of Steel Open” wrestling tournament has been held. The tournament generates $3,000$4,000 annually with all the proceeds going directly into the fund. Last March Karen decided to add another fundraiser to the calendar. The Coach/Pandora Bingo that she hosted at Curley netted $5,500. “The school was very supportive and in the end the money raised will help future students,” she explains.

Tony admits that organizing the tournament benefits more than the young man who will receive the scholarship. “I was very close to my brother. Putting this thing together each year is therapeutic in a way because it helps me get through some tough times,” he adds. Seeing kids enjoying a tournament named in honor of his brother is also very rewarding. “It makes me happy and proud to see a kid wrestle and to know that Sal’s story serves as an inspiration.”

The Friar C Club Board School Support Group

Tears began to form in Cris Wilson’s eyes as her son presented her with a flower prior to his last Homecoming soccer game. Like Cameron ’13, she has been a part of a Curley team for the past four years…The Friar C Club Board. If you’ve attended any sporting event at the school and had the craving for a hot dog and refreshment, chances are Cris or one of the other C Club Board members happily served you.

The Friar C Club is the parent support group that raises money to provide “extras” for all of Curley’s athletic teams. In addition to working the concession stands during home athletic contests, the C Club holds various fundraisers throughout the year which helps Curley teams with non-budgeted items and opportunities. Warm-up jackets, miscellaneous athletic equipment, and even monetary donations to offset the costs of hotel rooms for a traveling team are just a few of the things that the Club’s funds go toward. Each year, the Friar C also awards tuition assistance scholarships to three current student-athletes.

At the heart of all the fundraising efforts are a group of dedicated gals who have become best of friends. Along with Wilson who serves as the Secretary of the Club are Chris Remeikis (President), Charleen May (Vice President), and Debbie Antonio (Treasurer). Remeikis is quick to point out that there really isn’t a hierarchy within this group. “We’re all the same, the titles don’t mean a thing,” she says.

Despite the countless hours of volunteer work which involves juggling home and work schedules, the women are appreciative of what they take away from “helping out.” “I feel like I’m a part of the Curley community.

I not only get to meet new friends, I also get to know my son’s friends and their families,” Wilson states. Remeikis gets great satisfaction from being involved in events when the school has the opportunity to really shine.

“When the entire Curley Family comes together at Homecoming you get to see how it showcases the school and the spirit that encompasses this place. It really shows what Curley is all about,” she adds.

Wilson and Remeikis admit that there will be a void to fill without the excursions to Sam’s Club and the hours manning the concession stands on their schedules. “I’m going to miss it all,” exclaims the C Club Secretary. Wilson knows not to get too comfortable with the free time she will have when Cameron graduates in May. “My other son, Garrett will be at Curley in a couple of years and I’ll be back on the job!”
