Dear Friends of Curley: In last fall’s Annual Fund Appeal letter I asked you to recommit to Curley, and to support the efforts to keep Curley vital and viable. At this time I say “thank you” for the outpouring of support, in so many ways and from so many individuals. Without such generosity the work to continue providing a Catholic high school education in the Franciscan tradition would likely not be possible. Throughout this report there are a number of features on individuals who continue to commit to the school as well as share the Curley spirit in the larger community. As you will see, they include students, graduates, alumni parents and friends of the school. How blessed that those featured in these short articles represent such a cross-section of our Curley Family, and such numbers who are ready to help. As the new school year gets underway the administration is using the theme “Finding Francis at Curley.” It is a reminder to be conscious of the Franciscan attributes that are part of the Curley fabric, and which are being freshly articulated for each new class. As Pope Francis continues to draw attention to St. Francis, we ask the Curley community to live their faith with that same love of God, that same enthusiasm, and that same concern for those who might be on the margins. As part of that theme the faculty and staff are being invited to “be Francis” in their efforts to fully include each and every student and family in their endeavors. I ask you to join in that effort as well, by offering your support so Curley can continue its growing tradition. Indeed, each name in this report is a blessing to the young men of Curley. Gratefully,
Fr. Donald Grzymski, OFM Conv. ’70 President
FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR
2014-2015 School Board
Dear Friends: St. Francis reminds us, in perhaps his most famous writing Canticle of the Creatures, that wisdom can be found in the ordinary things in creation. Francis came to know the connection we have to one another and all creation in Brother Sun, Sister Moon, and all other created things. Remaining committed to that relationship with one another is one of the foundations of the Franciscan spirit that is so much a part of Curley. At graduation this past May, I was reminded of this connection. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Curley’s first graduating class. Many members of the Class of 1965 attended the commencement, and were greeted with a thunderous ovation. It was moving to see them so warmly received by the newest members of Curley’s alumni, and also to see that so many men from that first senior class remain committed to the Curley Family. Being with the Curley Family was important enough to claim a spot in their lives, even after all these years. The demands of life can be relentless, like waves on the beach in Ocean City, day and night, summer and winter, they just keep coming. Unless we remain committed to the important things in life, the demands on our time and attention will swallow them up. And so it is for the life of Archbishop Curley High School as well. As far as we have come in the last 50+ years, we must recommit ourselves, like those graduates from the Class of 1965, to stay connected to Curley, and continue living the Franciscan spirit. Thank you for all that you do, and all that you give of yourself, to support Archbishop Curley High School. Sincerely,
Martin E. Wolf ’76 School Board Chair

Neil Cashen ’72 FORMER CHAIR STILL INVOLVED Curley has been guided by its school board since 1976. Many gifted and dedicated men and women have given of their time, talent and treasure over the years. Neil Cashen ’72 was on the School Board from 2006 until 2012 and for two of those years, he served as the board chair. What makes Neil’s commitment to Curley unique is his willingness to continue to serve as an adjunct member of the School Board’s Finance Committee. When asked why he chooses to recommit himself to Curley, Cashen says: “I recognize the positive influence Archbishop Curley had on me as a young man and wanted to give something back. After my Board term expired, I was looking for ways to contribute to the school in addition to a financial gift. When asked to continue to serve on the Finance Committee, I saw this as a good opportunity to leverage some of my expertise and continue to contribute to the school, which would help other young men to have the opportunity I had to attend Curley.” Cashen’s choice to give back to Curley resonates with the Franciscan tradition of the school. As St. Francis said to the men who followed him: “Brothers, while we have time, let us do good.”

Jeff Knapp ’88 A SECOND EXPERIENCE Jeff Knapp has fond memories of his own experience at Curley as a student. He states, “To this day, I still feel a sense of brotherhood and connection to the school.” With his oldest son, Brandon, choosing to attend Curley this past fall, Knapp has had the opportunity to recommit to his alma mater as an “Alumni Parent.” The 1988 graduate has taken full advantage of the chance to get involved again. In addition to attending special events hosted by the Advancement Office and parent support groups, Knapp and his wife, Laura, served as volunteers at Open House and have assisted the Friar “C” Club. He is also a regular in the stands for Curley athletic events to watch Brandon compete in soccer and basketball for the Friars. “It’s a special feeling rooting for my son and alma mater,” he says proudly. Knapp is pleased to see that the things that differentiated Curley from other private schools when he was a student are still present on the campus today. “Curley does not portray a pretentious atmosphere as it is very grounded and accepting of all,” he points out. “The daily involvement and influence of the Franciscan Friars was something very positive from my four years, and I am glad that Brandon is also able to experience this.” Was there ever a doubt as to whether his son would choose Curley for high school? Based on the reaction after his shadow day, there was very little according to Knapp. “He immediately felt comfortable and had a positive experience.” The Knapp “pipeline” to Curley doesn’t end with Brandon as a second son, Josh, entered the 8th grade this fall. “As a father I take great pride in both my sons wanting to attend Curley and follow in my footsteps.” 6

Moke Wolfe ’87 “HOW CAN I HELP?” After spending 11 years working for Wells Fargo in the Atlanta area, Moke Wolfe was pleased when his job called for him to move farther north. After a brief stay in Northern Virginia, Wolfe was pegged by the multinational bank and financial services holding company to lead the effort to expand in the Baltimore market, thus opening the door to return to his hometown. One of the first things that Wolfe did once he settled in was reach out to his alma mater to find out how he could be of help. When asked about his desire to recommit to Curley, Wolfe responds without hesitation, “I truly believe that outside of my family, no one has done more to influence who I have become than the Curley Family.” He can readily recite the names of the many faculty and staff members who made a difference in his life. “These are the folks that pushed me to think for myself, to have original thoughts and question convention,” he states. Wolfe’s offer to get more involved wasn’t made in vain. Since his return home, the 1987 grad has spoken to students taking business classes, participated in “Career Day,” and most recently joined the Advancement Cabinet, an ad hoc committee of the School Board tasked with helping to build relationships between Curley and the business and community leaders in the Baltimore Metropolitan area.

Fr. Michael Heine, OFM Conv. ANOTHER FRIAR’S CONTRIBUTION Fr. Michael Heine’s Franciscan ministry included thirteen years on the faculty of Archbishop Curley. He was stationed at the school as a teaching friar in 1985-1986 and again as the Director of Guidance from 1994-2006. Currently serving as the Director of the Shrine of St. Anthony in Ellicott City, Maryland, Fr. Mike accepted an invitation to serve on Curley’s School Board last year. “I was excited to be involved in a new way, on another level,” he remarks. “This was a way to be a part of Curley even though I am stationed somewhere else.” In this new role he offers the Board a unique outlook that couples his Franciscan perspective with his experience as a member of the school staff. “I have an understanding of how the school runs,” he notes. Fr. Mike knows too that sharing the Gospel message as Francis did is not just the work of the friars. “It has been said that the friars are known for going above and beyond the regular school hours to help the students,” he notes. “The lay faculty certainly does that as well. That’s the Franciscan spirit!” The friar-priest, who recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination, also sees the Franciscan spirit in the students – both from his time on the faculty and now. “They are down to earth, genuine, unpretentious,” he asserts. Ultimately it is these students who made his time at Curley special and for whom he has recommitted himself to the mission of the school.

Tony Navitskis ’65 RETURNING HOME This past spring Curley celebrated the 50th reunion of its first graduating class. Among those who attended the Mass and breakfast to celebrate with the Class of 1965 was Tony Navitskis. Although Navitskis has been a loyal financial supporter of Curley for many years, this was his first visit back to the school in 50 years. “I pretty much left home around the Dundalk area at 18,” he explains. A job in the hospitality industry with Gino’s took Navitskis to many different places before a career in Human Resources allowed him the opportunity to settle down in Hanover, MA where he spent almost 30 years. Following his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service after 14 years, Tony and his wife Jean decided to relocate closer to home and chose Lewes, DE. Navitskis enjoyed seeing many of his former classmates at the reunion event and was impressed with what was happening at Curley. “It was amazing to learn that all of the students receive an iPad,” he says. “The Fine Arts wing is awesome…what an addition to the learning experience,” he adds. The “Golden Friar” plans to continue to support his alma mater because he feels he knows and has experienced the fruits of a Franciscan-based education. “My experience at Archbishop Curley High School changed and influenced my faith and my life. Perhaps subtly at first, but ever constantly growing,” he states.

Mustard Seed Match The Mustard Seed Match is being offered to schools by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, helping the school share in the results of the recent Archdiocesan capital campaign. It is a unique opportunity, in the course of the 2015 calendar year, to build the Curley endowment. For each $1.00 added to the endowment, the Mustard Seed Match is $0.50. The total possible match is $100,000, and so the School is working with donors to obtain that full match, thus growing the Endowment by $300,000. By June 30, 2015 over $108,137 in new scholarship gifts qualified for the Mustard Seed match. This included several newly established scholarships (e.g. The Class of 1965 Scholarship begun in celebration of the Class’ 50th reunion) as well as new gifts to previously established scholarships. The School would like to establish at least two new scholarships before December 31st, as well as grow existing scholarships. For additional information on starting a scholarship please contact the Advancement Office. A named scholarship can be established with an initial gift (which will qualify for the match if received by December 31) and a pledge to endow it with gifts totaling $25,000 over a defined period of years.

Joyce Becker ALUMNI PARENT EXPERTISE Like most Curley Moms, Joyce Becker’s connection to the school began during her son’s freshman year. When her son, Thomas ’05, enrolled, Joyce immediately noticed the school’s nurturing environment. Tommy, a talented musician and singer, engaged in the music program as member of both the choir and band. “The arts allowed him to establish relationships and to encounter tremendous role models,” his mother recalls. Tommy’s involvement in music led to Joyce’s membership in the Curley C-Notes. Ultimately she served this arts booster organization as the treasurer for three years. “It was good because I was able to be with parents who shared similar interests,” she notes, “but I was also able to get new people involved.” She recently committed to the school in a new way when she joined the School Board in 2014. As the Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies for Stevenson University, Becker is well suited to offer unique insights particularly as chair of the academic committee of the Board. “I work to bring a post-secondary school perspective to the topics discussed by the committee,” she states, “and that is important for a college-preparatory school.” She adds, “It is important for each student to reach his maximum academic potential at Curley in order to be successful in undergraduate and graduate studies.” Although her contributions to the Board are fueled by her professional background, her reasons for serving in this way are much more personal: “Having experienced the support of the Archbishop Curley Family and watching my son grow and mature in a safe and nurturing environment is why I continue to support Curley.” 14

Jonathan Melnick LONGTIME FRIEND OF CURLEY “I’m telling you, it’s different,” Jonathan Melnick emphatically states when reflecting on the culture of giving at Archbishop Curley. “It’s a culture that I haven’t seen replicated elsewhere.” Melnick would know. As an auctioneer, he has presided over countless charity auctions in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. He first encountered Archbishop Curley when he was asked to conduct the live auction of the first Curley Gala in 1996. In 2015, the school hosted the twentieth Gala and Jonathan was still there to lead the bidding. His efforts have helped raise more than $2 million for Curley! Melnick, who speaks proudly of his Jewish heritage and the lessons it taught him at an early age about giving, has long been connected to Catholic philanthropic efforts. He actively supports fundraising and strategic initiatives of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, including Catholic hospitals and schools, and offers high praise to the Church for its place in the Baltimore civic community. Just as the Church is an integral part of the fabric of Baltimore, Melnick holds a unique place in the Curley Family. He is often recognized in public by Gala attendees. “It is a thrilling thing to be in a restaurant or in the airport and to have someone ask, ‘Aren’t you the fella’ from the Curley Gala?’” It’s those same people who inspire him to return to Curley each year. “It’s the quality of your people,” he admits. “The good deed is being asked to return,” he states, “and I am obligated to fulfill that good deed.”

Ethan Mullen ’16 and Liam McDonnell ’16 In the hot days of July, 29 Curley men spent a week at a service camp called “Encounter the Gospel of Life.” This program is rooted in the principles of Catholic social teaching and designed to offer young people the opportunity to experience the power of service to others, and encountering Christ in others regardless of race, religion, experience, situation or status. This is the fifth year that Fr. Matt Foley OFM Conv, Campus Minister, led the group to the DC area for this experience. Two members of the Class of 2016 returned for a third year and offered some reflections. Liam McDonnell remembers, “Going to my first Encounter after my freshman year, I was not very excited. I was nervous and went in blind, but Friar Matt said it would turn out being one of the best weeks of my summer. I am happy to say it continually is the best week of summer. It’s a great place to meet new people and to make a difference serving others. I’ve learned so much, and it’s a great opportunity to strengthen my relationship with God. It’s one of the best things I have ever done. I convinced some of my friends to participate, and they have had the same experiences. I would be more than happy to return again next year as a young adult with a leadership role in the camp.” Ethan Mullen has similar memories: “Two years ago Encounter was an experience like none other for me. Before attending Curley, I hadn’t shown much interest in service, but Encounter redefined my general concept of service. I realized from these three trips just how fortunate I am, and I feel that the best way for me to show my appreciation is through action. I found that this ‘pay it forward’ mentality was something that benefited me as well as others through simple acts of kindness. To share these experiences with my Curley brothers showed me we learn from the people we meet and from one another.” 18

Michael DeMarco FORTY YEARS & GOING STRONG Beginning his 41st year on the faculty at Curley, Mr. Michael DeMarco says he only questioned his choice of vocation once. “It didn’t take long to realize that my first love was working with my students,” he says. “Doing the science without the students would get boring.” It was in spring of 1975 that DeMarco was invited by Mr. Don Lewis to apply for the teaching position. Since then, much has changed. “There has always been a need to learn and to incorporate new technology, to refine and to perfect techniques which give better results, to add new details as science has advanced,” he emphasizes. DeMarco has dedicated himself year after year to growing his personal knowledge in his areas of expertise as well as updating his methods and practices in the classroom. But ultimately it is the students who make it all worthwhile. His spirit of commitment is evident. “The challenge of teaching these students and helping them learn science is exciting for me, and I’ve tried to make it interesting for every one of them. This job has never been boring and it never grows old.” There are many students who are grateful for Mr. DeMarco’s annual recommitment to the educational enterprise at Curley.
