Carlos Santana

Musical evolution continues with an ever-changing energy Since introducing himself to the world more than 49 years ago at the historic Woodstock music festival, Santana’s musical adventures continue. He spent a solid portion of 2018 touring Europe and now he’s gearing up to extend his Las Vegas residency show at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay into its seventh year. I caught up with the guitar legend ahead of his next House of Blues shows from Oct. 31-Nov. 11. Woodstock was almost 50 years ago and here you are, still doing what you do. When I think back to that time now, the thing that is consistent to me is how music keeps bringing unity and harmony... .There’s a reason I love the Doors. They always sound to me like I’m

12 10.28.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

(a kid) practicing in a garage and their music could take you to the four corners of the world. I utilize that and Bob Marley and John Lennon and John Coltrane and Marvin Gaye to keep working and transforming fear. People tell me I sound like a hippie. Well, guess what? I am a hippie.

How was the experience touring with your current band different from the last incarnation? With all due respect and honor to every musician who’s ever played in this band, this band has the most energy consistently. The thing we have in common is everyone is dead center with passion and emotion and is feeling a sense of purpose, good pride and clarity. There’s no doubt in this band, no uncertainty. That show was much different from the Vegas show, right? The live shows outside the House of Blues, especially in Europe, we get to take more liberties with improvising. We have pockets

and islands in the middle of the set where we just go, people just follow me and we improvise on the spot. We might create a new song right there or revisit a song from Marvin Gaye or Miles Davis. At the House of Blues, we have a 90-minute set or two hours at the most. But we know the people want to hear yesterday, today and tomorrow and no matter where we are, we bring freshness and newness and fun. We know people want to hear “Black Magic Woman” and “Smooth,” but how do you make it new? It’s a good question. It’s important to crystallize your soul and spirit to dance with the holy ghost so by the time your brain is telling your anatomy what to do, you’re imbued with newness and freshness. When you live in your mind too much, you become pathetically predictable and miserable with self-doubt. It’s not a good place to be. Step outside your brain, practice doing that and your breath will change, your energy will change, your motive will change and your enthusiasm will change. Are you planning to make any big changes to the residency? You know, I said something to Joe Cocker before he died—we played together at Woodstock and at many places and I went to see him at the Oakland Coliseum when he opened for Tom Petty. I said, “You know, you and I, we used to be charcoal but now we’re diamonds.” He stopped what he was doing and looked at me and was like, “Oh, I like that.” So you’re constantly polishing. I like that word. And I like “crystallizing.” It’s about prioritizing your focus.

Fresh material One of Las Vegas’ most legendary voices is back at the Colosseum this week, but that’s not all—Celine Dion has been spending time in the studio and there’s quite a bit of buzz circulating that would have her releasing a new album next year. Dion’s last record was the French language Encore un soir in 2016, preceded by “Loved Me Back to

Life” in 2013. If she does drop a new collection of songs soon, don’t be surprised to see Dion touring again in the second half of next year, similar to her 2018 summer trek through Asia while taking a break from her Las Vegas residency. Catch her while you can at Caesars Palace Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 2-3, 6-7, 9-10, 13-14 and 16-17.

Dance Fever Jennifer Lopez’s Las Vegas residency may be finished, but her legacy remains. The NBC competition series she co-created and produced, World of Dance, is embarking on a live tour across the country and it stops at the Grand Events Center at Green Valley Ranch Resort on Nov. 2. Like the summer TV smash, the tour features the best dancers from across different genres showcasing their unique skills in a family-friendly production. The top acts from the second season, including The Lab, Michael Dameski, Charity & Andres and S-Rank are all expected to take the stage and Las Vegas’ own The Rock Company, a 12-member junior squad that reached the divisional finals, should make an appearance, too.

Martha Stewart took over a corner of the Strip this month when MGM Resorts and USA Today teamed to present her namesake food and wine event at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds. In addition to sampling dishes from dozens of local restaurants, VIP guests mingled with Stewart during her meet-and-greet master class and learned to make salsa from scratch and decorate desserts at the Grateful House hands-on experience. The newest addition to The Linq is The Book, a combination sports book, bar, restaurant and lounge stacked with innovative gaming and entertainment technologies, a self-serve beer wall and delicious eats from the Sticky Chicken food truck. Caesars CEO and President Mark Frissora hosted NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens for a proper kickoff. Grammy winner Pink and husband Carey Hart recently visited Caesars Palace to check out Absinthe. “Thank you for the laughs, my stomach hurts!” Instagrammed the superstar singer after the show. She’ll be back for a second tour stop at T-Mobile Arena on May 26. While in town to perform at the House of Blues, Korn frontman Jonathan Davis checked in at the Hard Rock Hotel to unveil a new memorabilia case. His “uniform” of all-black AllSaints gear was worn during the release party for his new album, Black Labyrinth, and for the filming of the music video for “Basic Needs.” He’ll be back in Vegas later this year for the debut of buddy Criss Angel’s new Mindfreak show at Planet Hollywood.

Having the Time of Her Life Cher’s spotlight shining brighter than ever It seems like the only person 2018 has been indisputably good to is Cher. Her latest album of ABBA covers debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s album chart and cracked the top five in six other countries. The album follows her supporting role in the box office hit sequel to Mamma Mia! in which she sings “Fernando” with leading actor Andy Garcia. She borrowed the title of her latest tour from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, a string of concerts that recently led her to Australia, where audiences were enraptured by her covers of “Fernando,” “SOS” and “Waterloo,” not to mention earlier classics like “Believe.”

Cher photo by Macfly Corp

Now she’s back in Las Vegas, where she kicks off the fall dates of her Classic Cher residency at Park Theater at Monte Carlo with an Oct. 31 show. Expect the aforementioned covers, plus a few more if Cher takes advantage of being in one venue for nine straight shows and adds more ABBA numbers. The marriage of Cher’s instantly recognizable voice and the music of Sweden’s superstar vocal group of the ’70s is a natural fit despite the songs being harder to sing than she originally thought, as she revealed in a press release. She was happy with the results though, and so were her fans.

The album was celebrated with parties in LGBT communities across the U.S. Meanwhile, Cher’s own life inspired theatrical musical The Cher Show, which premiered in Chicago in June, and begins previews at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre this weekend in advance of a Dec. 3 opening night. To top off the year, she will receive this year’s Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. in December along with singer Reba McEntire, jazz musician Wayne Shorter and composer Philip Glass. Will Cher wind up starring in the inevitable film version of The Cher Show? How could it turn out otherwise? –Matt Kelemen

Spread on the Jam Going to a Phish concert isn’t like seeing any other band perform live. The Vermont foursome has embraced experimental improvisation as the core of its music since forming in the late 1980s, and has been the most prominent act in the jam band scene since the early ’90s. Initially influenced by jam pioneers the Grateful Dead, Phish has evolved into its own distinctive musical experience, in many ways eclipsing the popularity and impact of its predecessor. Without ever scoring mainstream radio or TV airplay or releasing a hit single, Phish has become one of the most popular touring bands in the U.S., with epic shows that feature ever-changing set lists and long, improvisatory jams. Although the band has gone on hiatus for various periods of time over the years, the core members have remained the same since 1986. Phish’s most dedicated fans have seen hundreds of shows, but newcomers can easily appreciate the intricacy and energy of a Phish concert, and the fans are always welcoming, happy to share the wonders of their favorite musical innovators. –Josh Bell

You Spin Me Round It’s All Good It may not have occurred to Peter Noone when he first read the lyrics to “I’m Into Something Good” that he’d be singing the 1964 hit more than 50 years later with his band, Herman’s Hermits. Herman’s Hermits had two No. 1 singles in the U.S. with “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” and “I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am.” They’d have more hits on both sides of the Atlantic before breaking up in 1971. Noone went solo and released a cover of

18 10.28.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

David Bowie’s “Oh You Pretty Things,” but gradually found more success in theater and television. A four-year stint as the host of VH1’s My Generation familiarized audiences with Noone once more, and he’s been successful on the nostalgia circuit. In addition to his own band’s songs, Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone has recently covered ’60s hits such as “Love Potion No. 9,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Folsom Prison Blues” in concert. –Matt Kelemen

Virgil’s Cauldron

Creative Vision Maxwell first found success as part of the neo-soul movement of the mid-’90s, alongside performers like D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, and he’s always followed his own muse rather than any pop-music trends. That’s given him hit songs like “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Sumthin’ Sumthin’” and “Fortunate,” but it’s also driven him to take long periods of time perfecting his ambitious studio albums. Maxwell is currently in the midst of completing an epic trilogy, which he began in 2009 (after an eight-year hiatus from releasing new music) with

BLACKsummers’night, continued with 2016’s blackSUMMERS’night, and is set to conclude with the final installment, Night, sometime next year. He recently released the single “Shame,” the first song off the long-awaited upcoming conclusion of the trilogy. “I was doing so much, while not doing that much,” he told Rolling Stone in 2016, describing his lengthy writing and recording process, while also joking that “I’ll be free!” following the release of Night. Given his history, though, Maxwell will almost certainly use that freedom to craft more complex, challenging music. –Josh Bell

Halloween is all about fun—scary fun, preferably. And what’s more fun than a huge, shareable cocktail? One that’s scary, that’s what. Virgil’s Real Barbecue at The Linq has the perfect concoction for the season: The 1-gallon Virgil’s Cauldron, which blends Skyy vodka with your choice of flavor— strawberry, peach, blueberry, grapefruit or raspberry lemonade—all topped off with a large, “bleeding” ice hand. For the Fans Mike Shinoda says he can tell with a look that someone sympathizes with his grief (his Linkin Park bandmate, Chester Bennington, took his own life last year), and he’s on the road as a thank you for all the fan support. He makes his statements musically right now, playing material from his latest album, Post Traumatic, in concert and mixing up set lists. There’s plenty of Linkin Park, but Shinoda intuitively adds deep cuts and B-sides as he’s

Infinite Successes Tim Allen had one of the greatest weeks an entertainer could have in November of 1994. During a seven-day span, the comedian and actor had the top television show in the country with Home Improvement, the top movie in the country with The Santa Clause and the top bestselling book in the country with Don’t Stand Too Close to a Naked Man. But it’s easy to argue that none of these are what Allen is best known for. His is the voice that has scored a place in pop culture history with the iconic catchphrase, “To Infinity and Beyond,” the call to action of fearless space explorer Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movie

In the newly introduced Corner Market Buffet (Treasure Island, 702.894.7111), you can find a range of gourmet dishes from Peruvian chicken to tandoori chicken protein bowls, as well as a farmer’s market salad station and desserts such as gelato, soufflés and bananas Foster.

franchise. (The Santa Clause has now had three films in the franchise while Toy Story will be releasing its fourth edition in 2019, plus all the spinoff specials.) Allen hit TV gold again with Last Man Standing, a sitcom with a conservative audience base that ran for six seasons on ABC. After being canceled last year, Fox picked it up for yet another season, which started in September. There is no stopping the comic and his distinctly masculine point of view. America definitely seems to love “The Toolman,” and then some. –Jason Harris

At Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops, the Once Bitten cocktail comes in a skull-shaped souvenir glass filled with Bacardi Anejo Cuatro, St.-Germain, ginger beer, lime and blood orange purée. For some clever use of lychee, head to Delmonico’s at The Venetian or Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House at MGM Grand and order the Freaky Lychee or Graveyard Ghoul, respectively. Both of the cocktails use the fruit to mimic creepylooking eyeballs! –Kiko Miyasato

Buffalo shrimp

Just a word of advice from someone who’s been there: Your friends will take umbrage at your hoarding of the smoked Gouda cheese sauce. Give it up, or at least share. At Public House in the Luxor, that advice holds for truffle-dusted fries, too. Sharing is caring, after all. Although it might be easy to dismiss Public House as just a sports bar or only a restaurant, that would be doing it a disservice. A recent remodel of the restaurant enhanced both aspects of the venue, with new, jumbo screens dominating the bar at one end of the dining room and multiple screens around the room, making it the perfect place to grab a meal while you’re watching the game. In an adjacent area, you’ll find the can bar, where there are plenty of choices—on a recent visit, we crushed a Mother Earth Sin Tax imperial peanut butter stout and a Modern Times Fruitlands sour. There are plenty of beers on draft, too, from the basics to specialty and microbrews. You can indulge in a cocktail, or get a glass of vino if you’d prefer. Appetizers here can be enormous (that really goes for the whole menu, though), like Dessert sliders the Bavarian pretzel. Although on the approach it looks normally sized, once it’s to the table, you

realize the scale of this thing. It’s served with whole grain mustard and the previously referenced Gouda sauce—lord, it’s good-a. The fry sampler is another ginormous item, with tator tots, onion rings, sweet potato and sidewinder fries, and Gouda sauce, of course! When it’s time to move on, it’s possible for everyone to get their own entrée, but you may want to go at it family style. Why? Because of the Big Boy. This monster of a burger features a 16-ounce patty, with Swiss, onion straws and portobello mushrooms, plus the traditional toppings and two bacon-wrapped onion rings. It’s all speared by a steak knife, thank heavens, because you’ll need it to divvy up the burger with your pals. There are a number of chef specials here, like the Buffalo shrimp, large, tempura-battered bites with sidewinder fries accompanying them, and slow-roasted BBQ and Philly cheese sauce; each item has a suggested beer pairing. Desserts range from elaborate milkshakes and chocolate mousse to a warm chocolate chip cookie with ice cream. They’re good, very good, but you’ll never hear a higher-pitched squeal of delight from a grown-ass woman than the one that ensued when the dessert sliders were delivered to the table. The Take It to the House sliders and funnel cake fries replicate the look of regular sliders, with cheese that’s actual fruit leather, strawberry “tomatoes” and cupcake buns. And the fries are darned delicious, especially when dipped in the raspberry "ketchup."

Alli Gustafson

Bartender reflects on an awesome career Instead of growing up around rice fields, Alli Gustafson grew up around cornfields. “When I was 3 years old I left South Korea because I was adopted and moved to Iowa,” she said. “I was really lucky to be raised by a great family.” As Gustafson reached adulthood she got the itch to move from her rural surroundings to a more urban setting, so she moved to Kansas City. It was there that she first began her bartending career. After sharpening her skills, she moved again, this time to Miami, where she helped open several bars and restaurants as both a manager and lead bartender. Then, in 2014, a friend talked her into moving to Las Vegas, where she was immediately hired by one of the hottest nightclubs, Drai’s at The Cromwell.

28 10.28.18 LasVegasMagazine.com

Not only is Gustafson continuing a successful career, she’s enjoying one of the best parts about bartending at Drai’s: getting to be around the phenomenal concerts and guest hosts. “There’s been so many good nights so far,” she said. “Future, T.I., Migos, LeBron James, Dave Chappelle. … I honestly think that stage, the live acts up there, you really can’t beat it. People love to come see their favorite artists—it’s not just about having a DJ, it’s about having the artists that connect with guests.” When asked to reflect on where her career is today, she said, “It’s awesome. It’s fun, man. I’ve gotten to be really good at bartending, I’ve been doing it long enough! It’s become a real career for me. I love it.” –Kiko Miyasato

Let Gustafson mix you one of the nightclub’s most-popular cocktails, the Drai’s Lemonade, made with Belvedere Peach Nectar vodka, peach purée, housemade sour and fresh raspberries. Have that drink in hand and get ready for some awesome performances up on Drai’s stage this week, including Fabolous (Oct. 28), Wiz Khalifa (Oct. 30) and Fat Joe (Nov. 2). –KM

Jen Kramer

What was your favorite costume? A blue M&M. When I was a kid, my family all dressed up as M&Ms together one year, so it brings back fun memories. Ever play a “trick” on anyone? And why? As a magician, absolutely. Halloween is a great time for magic tricks, especially ones that are Halloween-themed. Favorite thing about Halloween? I love the creativity it brings out in people and the sense of community around trickor-treating and Halloween events. Best Halloween memory (recent or in the past)? Many of my best Halloween memories have involved magic. It’s always a blast doing Halloween shows, and I love seeing the audience in creative costumes and ready to have fun.

Worst “treat” you ever got?

A handshake from Wayne Newton. So wet yet so strong. I was powerless. The Gazillionaire (Absinthe)

(Absinthe)

Best Halloween memory (recent or in the past)? Sitting naked in my jacuzzi while my Ukrainian acrobats bobbed for apples. Best costume you’ve ever seen? My Russian bodyguards as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. It’s what I call them every day, so it was cute. What was your favorite costume? I like to dress up as myself. That way, I’m still me, which is awesome, and everyone leaves me alone.

Lorena Peril

What was your favorite costume? Dressing up like The Hulk on Rachael Ray’s show. Best costume you’ve ever seen? A group of sisters were dressed up as lobsters. I thought it was funny. Tell us your best ghost story (real or fake)? My dad mysteriously disappeared when he told me he’d come back after going out for a pack of smokes. Spooky. Worst “treat” you ever got? Favorite candy? Least favorite candy? Candy Crush would have to be my favorite and “Candy Shop” by 50 Cent my least.

What was your first time trick-or-treating by yourself like? The first time I went out trick-or-treating I got a lot of very strange looks and when I knocked on people’s doors, a lot of them wouldn’t answer. It was also May 15 when I did this, so that might have been a factor. Worst “treat” you ever got? A personal voicemail from comedian Joey Delaware. Best costume you’ve ever seen? I saw a tree and it looked just like a tree. It was standing next to some other trees so it was really convincing. Worst costume you’ve ever seen? Gone With The Wind, as sometimes taking something out of context can just be funny or surreal. Sandwich shop with fish. Best Halloween memory (recent or in the past)? My best Halloween memory was when my friends and I went to two or three different neighborhoods and filled two grocery bags full of candy. We had candy for months! What was your favorite costume? Growing up in England, we didn’t wear costumes. We just lit fireworks in the streets of London. Favorite candy? Least favorite candy? As a Brit we call them “sweets.” Growing up people never gave you sweets, they just called the police because of the fireworks. Ever play a “trick” on anyone? And why? Every day my family, my team and I play tricks on each other. I did play one monumental trick on a bodyguard. All I can say is it involved me calling the head chef of the hotel on tour and asking him to make a chocolate laxative cake. Over 50 people were involved in this particular prank.

Matt Goss

Donny and Marie Osmond

Best costume you’ve ever seen? The bat demon form of Dracula from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was dead on—wow! What was your first time trick-or-treating by yourself like? I always went with a group of friends and we always made out like bandits! Tell us your best ghost story (real or fake)? Not really a ghost story, but I am a being from another dimension that has visited this planet many times before. Worst costume you’ve ever seen? A guy walking around in a U-Haul box. Where do you like to celebrate Halloween? (At) home scaring kids (a little), if not partying onstage with Purple Reign.

Best costume you’ve ever seen? When I saw a guy dressed as me with a fedora and four blowup dolls dressed as showgirls—he attached (them) to broomsticks and called them Dirty Virgins. Tell us your best ghost story (real or fake)? When I was a kid, one night I came in late and went to bed. After about 10 minutes my mum came in to check that I was OK. As she walked closer to me I said, “Hello mum,” but it was dark and she didn’t respond. She got closer and I sat up in my bed. She was about 12 inches from my face when I realized it was not my mum but a spirit with no features. Pretty scary stuff! Where do you like to celebrate Halloween? I like to organize a poker night with friends. It’s the best late-night joint in town.

What was your favorite costume? Dressing as Donny and him dressing as me—we went out trick-or-treating. I must say, he does have better legs than me!

Favorite candy? Least favorite candy? Favorite: Those ones that fizz and pop in your mouth. Least favorite: There is one that you eat but it’s still in your mouth much later on, it’s like some kind of super glue in your mouth disguised as candy and it’s gross. Worst “treat” you ever got? A pack of hot-and-spicy sauce that was disguised as chocolate fudge—my mouth felt like it was on fire for days! Ever play a “trick” on anyone? And why? I recall when some fans knocked on our door hoping to trick-or-treat Donny. He wasn’t home, so I gave them some of his stuff—a bottle of his favorite aftershave, some old socks, a belt. For them it was a treat, but I guess I kind of tricked Donny. Favorite thing about Halloween? Taking my grandkids out around the neighborhood and seeing their little faces light up when they get candy. Best costume you’ve ever seen? I have to be honest—I love the ones my grandkids dress up in.

The best Halloween party you’ve been to? My own. I threw a party back in the ’70s for about 30 people—1,000 people showed up.

WORST COSTUME YOU’VE EVER SEEN?

The Donny Osmond Halloween costume made back in the ’70s. Google mine, if you dare! DONNY OSMOND

Terry Fator

Tell us your best ghost story? I dreamed I was singing onstage with the scariest ghost at my side. I looked over and it was Marie. Wait … that wasn’t a dream. Worst costume you’ve seen? The Donny Osmond Halloween costume made back in the ’70s. Google mine, if you dare!

Where do you like to celebrate Halloween? Marie’s house. It scares me out of my mind! Best Halloween memory ? I was 5 years old. My brothers made a “Spook Alley” and they needed a guinea pig to test it out. They volunteered me. As I walked through it, the mouse traps on the floor snapped at my feet. I don’t know why that’s a good memory, but it takes me back to a really nice time in my life.

What was your first time trick-or-treating by yourself like? It was really scary; and the odd part, I was 43. The truth is I was about 6 and I went as Robin to my big brother’s Batman and was absolutely amazed that adults would give out free candy to children. What was your favorite costume? Assuming you’re not talking about my sex life? I had a cool robot costume that my mom made me when I was 8. Favorite candy? Least favorite candy? My favorite candy is Hot Tamales. In my world there is no “least favorite.” Favorite Halloween/scary movies? I love all the old black-and-white monster movies from Dracula to Frankenstein, and I adore Nightmare Before Christmas. Tell us your best ghost story (real or fake)? I actually tried to summon the ghost of Edgar Bergen (a legendary ventriloquist) many years ago using a technique that someone told me about. I had one of those large-headed ceramic dolls of Charlie Chaplin sitting in front of the mirror I was trying to summon Bergen through. I failed, and after I had gone to sleep I was awakened by a loud crack at the mirror. I turned on the light and the head of the Chaplin figure was laying next to the body, broken clean off. I figured my cat had broken it, but I looked down and my cat was sound asleep on the bed next to me. I’ve never dabbled in the occult again. Best Halloween memory? Several of my employees and my wife and I went to Disneyland’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and we all dressed as members of my show. Angie (my wife) wore a Turtle costume and went as Winston the Impersonating Turtle, my friend went as Duggie my annoying neighbor, my employees went as Vikki the Cougar and Hyphen the fifth Beatle. I had the best costume though … I went as Terry Fator. To read more of the Vegas celebs’ questions and answers, visit lasvegasmagazine.com.

Still in Step

AJ McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell certainly aren’t boys any more, but they’re still as Backstreet as they’ve ever been as they prove in performance after performance of Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life (Planet Hollywood Resort, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster). A year and a half after the debut of their Las Vegas headlining show, the Backstreet Boys are still

filling seats with mega-fans and infusing the atmosphere with the energy of what for many is a more innocent era. There’s nothing that can clear away gloom and doom for BSB devotees like the sunny sound of the vocal quintet. The Backstreet Boys celebrated their 25th anniversary this year with the May release of single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” They went on break in August with more than 50

residency concerts before coming back to Zappos Theater. As of October, they were still putting the finishing touches on a ninth album, although Carter managed to squeeze in a solo tour of Mexico and South America and McLean explored his interests in country music. With their break over, the Boys are back to presenting the ultimate BSB show, as only possible in Las Vegas. –Matt Kelemen
