NOTES

From the Editor Over-the-Top Fun

Like many of you, I was one of the millions watching the Raiders/Chargers game a few weeks ago on Sunday night. And like many of you, I was on my feet during much of that insane game, one that directly affected the post-season fates of both teams (as well as one other team watching nervously at home). And I had to continually remind myself: “This is happening in my city!” I mean, I would have been watching that game anyway, but the entertainment value it offered on top of everything else ... it feels like it could have only happened in Las Vegas, a city that practically invented over-the-top experiences. This week’s issue is packed with such shows, restaurants, attractions and much more, all guaranteed to keep you coming back. One of the Strip’s longest-running shows, Fantasy, features some of the most stunning women on the planet. In this issue, writer Matt Kelemen interviews Yesi Burgess, a longtime cast member of the Luxor show (“The Right Moves,” p. 30). And we’re just getting started. Over at Harrah’s, state-of-the-art technology allows a legendary superstar to “perform” for audiences: An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Concert (“Star Power,” p. 11), one of the newest shows to hit the Las Vegas Strip—and also one of its most buzzworthy.

Another recently arrived production, iLuminate at The STRAT, will no doubt be familiar to fans of America’s Got Talent. In this issue, editor at large Brock Radke interviews Miral Kotb, the show’s creator (“Visual Momentum,” p. 34). But great shows are just the beginning. Wait until you check out some of our city’s dining destinations. If you’ve never visited Resorts World Las Vegas, the Strip’s newest property, you should go right now to check out Brezza, highlighted in this week’s issue by managing editor Nina King (“Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” p. 24). And yours truly recently visited NoMad Library at NoMad Las Vegas for an unforgettable dinner (“Book It Now!” p. 10). I can’t recommend this place enough. Elsewhere in this week’s issue, we’ll take you for a ride on the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York (“Hold On!” p. 11), show you classic paintings like you’ve never seen them before at The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Las Vegas at The Shops at Crystals (“A Master Class,” p. 9), and introduce you to pop-up experience Rose Rooftop at Resorts World Las Vegas (“A Heightened Experience,” p. 22). Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t panic. That’s pretty normal when trying to take in the over-the-top city that is Las Vegas. Just pick a starting point and have fun!

A Master Class It’s one thing to see a master’s works in a museum. It’s another thing entirely to see them as they are displayed in The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Las Vegas, where some of the most famous works of art

are shown in a way you’ve never seen before. You enter a large, rectangular room, and as the lights dim, Van Gogh’s works like “The Starry Night,” “Wheatfield with Crows” and “The Yellow House” are projected on every

inch of space on the walls, as plaintive music takes you on a tour of the artist’s journey. It’s fascinating, it’s cutting-edge, it’s emotional. It’s also one of the most unforgettable art exhibits you’ll ever experience. –Ken Miller

Book It Now!

NoMad Hotel restaurant excels in every department A big part of dining on the Las Vegas Strip is the dining room itself. Your surroundings can have an enormous effect on the overall experience, and that’s absolutely the case at NoMad Library. The name says it all: It’s a large, four-walled room, populated by books which were collected from a wide variety of sources (including the David & Peggy Rockefeller Auction). All the books have been arranged by color (reds on one side, blues on the other) for a pleasant visual contrast, and all can be plucked from the shelves for reading enjoyment. Adding to the relaxing feel of this space are the seating arrangements themselves. Red leather banquettes are extremely comfortable,

and soft lighting from chandeliers only enhances the ambience. Add in amazing service and you have an experience you’ll be recommending to all your family and friends. And we haven’t even gotten to the menu yet! Make sure to start your evening with one of the signature cocktails, from the Runyon Canyon (a tiki-ish delight made with Elyx vodka, vermouth di Torino, amontillado sherry, cranberries and lime) to the Gentlemen’s Exchange (a variation on the Manhattan with rye, Suze, Foro Amaro, vermouth Di Torino, coffee, absinthe and Angostura bitters). The menu is loaded with tempting choices, but we definitely recommend the NoMad roast

chicken, so succulent and flavorful, stuffed with foie gras, black truffle and brioche. Pair it with sides such as the dessert-like honeynut squash, served with sage and lemon ricotta, and Ridiculous mac and cheese, smothered with lobster and black truffle. If you’re in a seafood mood, few restaurants do branzino better. This version is served with grilled whole baby leeks, tomatillos and poblano peppers. Meat lovers will definitely want to try the American wagyu prime rib for two, rubbed with porcini and black garlic and served with horseradish cream, sauce bordelaise and pommes aligot. –Ken Miller NoMad Las Vegas, 702.730.7000

Star Power An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Concert, a new Strip production, has all the energy of a Whitney Houston concert—even though the person singing onstage isn’t really there. Through state-of-the-art technology, Houston appears, along with four live backup dancers and a live band, in various costumes to sing the best songs from her discography. And when the audience hears songs like “Greatest Love of All,” “I Have Nothing” and “All the Man That I Need,” you swear the genuine article was performing before them—they stand up, raising their hands and dancing. The performer may not be real, but the emotion her music generates definitely is. At times, Houston’s hologram even “addresses” the audience, which gives it a much more personal touch. And when the show ends with Houston dancing to “I’m Every Woman,” the backup dancers enter the audience, turning the entire theater into a massive dance floor. This is a different kind of entertainment, to be sure, but it’s put together with style, flash and heart. –Ken Miller Harrah’s, 702.777.2782 or ticketmaster.com

Hold On! A roller coaster that dips, turns and flips on the inside, outside and around a Las Vegas Strip casino-hotel? Totally, dudes! For many, many years The Big Apple Coaster has been delighting thrill seekers—and those that want a thrill just for the day—as the roller coaster hits a top speed of 67 mph. For a couple of white-knuckling minutes, feel free to scream your head off as the coaster takes you through a 180-degree heartline twist and dives from the height of 203 feet! You can even take this plunge while saying your “I do’s.” Yes, you can get married on the Big Apple Coaster—because Vegas! –Kiko Miyasato New York-New York, 702.740.6969

A Friendly Hang If you and your buddies just want a casual hang to enjoy some yummy food and maybe a pint of beer, head to Beer Park. This rooftop venue offers indoor-outdoor seating, faux grass with picnic tables and some of the best views of the Las Vegas Strip. Did we mention Beer Park offers nearly 40 beers on tap, as well as beer cocktails, classic cocktails and wines on tap? Besides stocking the Budweiser brands, there’s domestic and imported beer and hard-to-

Soak up all that alcohol by ordering one of Beer Park’s tempting food offerings like mac and cheese egg rolls, truffle fries, chili verde nachos and a breakfast burger; or share some meat entrées like barbecue pork ribs and short rib tacos. –Kiko Miyasato Paris, 702.444.4500

Caesars Palace venue has changed the game Rising out of the ashes of the city’s first mega club, Pure, Omnia did it bigger, better and more jaw-dropping when it opened in 2015. The running design theme is a cross-section of modern and vintage, with soft and sexy flourishes—and bold and seductive touches. However, one thing did remain the same as Pure: the expansive terrace that overlooks the lights of the neon Strip. On the terrace, guests can dance directly under the stars, order cocktails at the outdoor bar or book a luxurious VIP table that’s more reminiscent of a decked-out poolside cabana. Back inside, the 75,000-square-foot space continues with two levels and two separate rooms. The main room features the huge, kinetic

LED chandelier that fluidly moves up and down, side to side, and morphs into different shapes while glowing all the colors of the rainbow. When the chandelier is in motion, it’s definitely an Instagram moment you’ll want to document for the folks back home. On the mezzanine level, guests can book VIP tables that overlook the dance floor. Patrons can take it down a notch in size by visiting the Heart of Omnia—think ultra-lounge with a more intimate vibe, smaller dance floor and the sounds of top 40, R&B and hip hop. Omnia is also known for its roster of talent— year after year, the nightclub books some of the top EDM DJs in the world. Think Afrojack, Martin Garrix, Calvin Harris, Armin van Buuren,

Borgeous, Kaskade and more. This week, you can party and dance to the sounds of Mikey Francis (Jan. 25), Party Favor (Jan. 28) and Steve Aoki (Jan. 29). Here’s a great tip, and definitely one to consider if you’re in town for the weekend and really want to punch your party card—think about purchasing Omnia’s Las Vegas Party Pass. Starting at just $99, you’ll receive a wristband that will grant you access to multiple nightclubs over the weekend, including the behemoth Hakkasan at MGM Grand, the more intimate Jewel at Aria and the long-running Tao nightclub at The Venetian. The genesis of Starship featuring Mickey Thomas is almost as famous as its songs, neither of which have lost their appeal to generations of music fans (and, to a slightly lesser extent, moviegoers, who can’t ever hear the song “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” without thinking about the movie Mannequin). It goes all the way back to Jefferson Airplane in the 1960s, which spun off into iterations Jefferson Starship, Starship Jefferson, Starship and, ultimately, the group that will be performing at Golden Nugget this week. It’s a long and winding road, to be sure, but all you really need to know is that you’ll hear all the hits you know and love, including “Jane,” “Sara,” “We Built This City,” “No Way Out,” “It’s Not Over Til It’s Over” and so many more. Thomas will also include cuts from his work with other groups, including “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” with the Elvin Bishop Band (another song that’s almost impossible to separate from the iconic movie it was featured in, Boogie Nights). –Ken Miller

Beyond the Movies Odds are you’re going to have a good time at The Hunger Games: The Exhibition, an immersive experience that explores the world of Panem and the empowering journey of heroine Katniss Everdeen. Not only will you surround yourself with all things based off the hit book and film series, you might also learn a thing or two, even if you’re a Hunger Games superfan. Upon entering the exhibit, you’ll walk into replicas of iconic sets and locations from

Farther along into your journey, you’ll walk through galleries that feature interactive touchscreen displays, original props and nearly 30 authentic costumes. Luxor exhibit explores the human form like never before You can view it as a learning experience. You can view it as entertainment. Either way you choose to view Bodies … The Exhibition, you’ll walk away from the attraction with a better understanding and appreciation for that body that actually just carried you through said exhibit. Bodies is human anatomy come to life in a unique, curious and teachable way. Put through a method known as polymer preservation, 13 real, whole-body specimens and more than 250 actual organs and body parts are on display (as well as skeletal structures). The self-guided, walkthrough experience is also chock-full of facts you can read throughout the exhibit. Every drop of blood in the body passes through the heart

once per minute. The tongue is made up of 16 individual muscles. The kidneys filter impurities from the blood at a rate of 15 gallons per hour. See what a lung looks like after years of smoking (guests that do smoke have the chance to toss their packs of cigarettes into a clear plastic box as a sign of a commitment to quit); what a liver looks like from cirrhosis damage; what the brain looks like after suffering a stroke; what organs look like from overeating or lack of exercise. The exhibit is also divided into sections so guests can explore the body’s muscular, skeletal, circulatory and respiratory systems. A highly sensitive exhibit explains and shows fetal development (this is a room you can choose to skip entirely).

For an extremely timely exploration, Bodies recently added a few displays that explore the effects that COVID-19 has on the body. Read about what the virus does to the circulatory system, the reproductive system, the respiratory system, the digestive system and more. Perhaps the most meaningful quote on display says, “Why all this interest in the human body? The answer to this question seems quite clear to me: Your body is the only thing you can carry with you from the moment you are born until your very last breath.” So why wouldn’t you want to learn as much as you can about your body, right? And that makes Bodies … The Exhibition a mustsee. –Kiko Miyasato

Several dishes are meant to be shared, like the beef carpaccio with gorgonzola polenta, balsamic onion, scallion cream and shaved Parmigiano; and pastas including tortelli, a mix of sweet and savory, composed of butternut squash and sage brown butter; and agnolotti, filled with veal breast cooked slow and low, joined with basil and lemon ricotta. Entrées present as works of art with a range of colors, like the 12-ounce wood-grilled sirloin block served with Tuscan croutons, balsamic onions topped with a rich Gorgonzola cheese sauce; shawarma-spiced salmon with red quinoa tabouli and cherry raita; salt-crusted sea bass with miso glaze and asparagus; and classic chicken Milanese with arugula, tomato, reggiano and lemon vinaigrette. The New York native studied singing, dance and acting in college, and after graduation spent a few years on the amusement park and cruise ship circuit out of Florida before bringing his

After spending some time involved in community theater and some Strip productions, he auditioned for Omega Mart and has been with the company since it opened its doors in early 2021. NOSH CHEERS There are places that feel comfortable no matter how sophisticated they are. Brezza in Resorts World Las Vegas is one such environment, with sleek wood and metal elements evoking mid-century modern design in a low-key way. Along the sides of the dining area are slightly elevated, plush booths, with a variety of tables leading out to a patio area. On the opposite side of the dining room is a sweeping bar, beyond which you’ll find the kitchen and a custom, Tuscan-style, wood-fired grill, where many of the signature dishes here are created. The bar can supply you with plenty of delicious cocktails, but for a completely luxurious experience, opt for wine, of which Brezza has a huge selection. The bread that is served when you are seated is phenomenal—the focaccia is soft and almost melts in your mouth. Choices for starters include heirloom tomatoes served in a caprese with buffalo mozzarella and grilled crostini with basil pesto, and a flavorful tricolor salad with arugula, pomegranate and goat cheese. Order the chef’s salumi and Italian cheese board and you will request it be left on the table until the meal ends—you’ll be picking at the olives and pickled vegetables until it is decimated, or dessert is served. The primi course will leave you completely satisfied, with dishes such as bucatini alla amatriciana, a toothy pasta accented

For an entrée, you can choose from an luscious osso buco with saffron orzo, veal Marsala or pan-seared salmon; but you can also go for one of chef Nicole Brisson’s celebrated steaks—Piemontese filet, dry-aged New York strip or the bistecca di Fiorentina from Creekstone Farms—cooked on that wood-fired grill. If you like, add on half a Maine lobster, nduja bay scallops or shrimp plus one of the quartet of inventive sauces like cacio e pepe zabaglione. Other grilled specialties include whole branzino or a Heirloom tomatoes Heritage Farms T-bone pork chop. One of my favorites (it left me exclaiming, “This is what I come to an Italian restaurant for!”) is the cappellacci “oreganata,” pockets whose lemon and garlic fragrances transport you out of Vegas. Greet the Tiger

Aiming a spotlight at revered Asian restaurants Chinese New Year celebrations begin this year when February arrives, but there’s no reason to wait to mark the start of the Year of the Tiger, especially if you want to do it through food. Las Vegas is without question one of the greatest destinations on the planet for all different types of Chinese cuisine, from fine-dining restaurants on the Strip you can’t find anywhere else to affordable and satisfying neighborhood takeout joints and everything in between. Since the new Resorts World Las Vegas was built by Malaysian company Genting Berhad, it’s no surprise that there’s an emphasis on Asian cuisine at the new hotel and casino, and its Chinese restaurant is already garnering acclaim. Genting Palace (702.676.8888) offers a glamorous environment with a menu running the

gamut from seafood specialties to noodle dishes and dim sum. The prix fixe menu is a great way to explore this exciting new eatery, featuring dishes like roasted pork two ways with pork belly and barbecue honey-glazed pork, sweet and sour Chilean seabass, Sichuan-style braised tofu and chicken, and crispy vegan spring rolls. China Mama (702.873.1977) has long been a favorite of locals craving soulful, authentic eats, as well as Vegas visitors who love to explore the city’s Chinatown district west of the Strip along Spring Mountain Road. The savory steamed soup dumplings xiao long bao are one of the specialties of the house and most popular dishes, but this talented kitchen team is equally adept at everything from pot stickers to pork buns, including a rich and delicious version of mapo tofu.

If you want to check out the Strip’s best versions of those memorable soup dumplings, best to head to Aria to explore the menu at Din Tai Fung (702.590.8650) or slide over to The Palazzo to experience the spicier version at Mott 32 (702.607.3232). Of course, both of these regal restaurants have plenty more to offer, but there’s no shame in touring the city to find your favorite dumpling. If you want to experience a true Vegas institution in this culinary category, head to the Gold Coast on Flamingo Road and try everything at Ping Pang Pong (702.247.8136). This place famously fills up on the weekends for an irresistible dim sum brunch, but you can order its deep-fried handmade shrimp balls and cumin lamb skewers any time of day, any day of the week. Yesi Burgess is solid gold as dance captain of Fantasy

Luxor 702.262.4400

When Yesi Burgess attended Fantasy shortly after arriving in the United States, she was easily able to see herself onstage as part of the Luxor’s sultry, sophisticated topless revue. The Cuban-born dancer had a firm foundation in contemporary ballet enhanced with training in salsa, tango, flamenco and bachata, and felt her style more in step with Sin City stages than the audition grind of L.A. she had experienced. “Fantasy was actually the first show I watched when I came to Vegas to visit,” says Burgess, who joined the show in 2008 and has been dance captain since 2018. “I was like, ‘I want to be in that show,’ before I auditioned for it. After being here and seeing a few shows, I knew without a doubt in my mind that this was the place for me and my career.” She says she remembers her first time onstage as a Fantasy dancer as if it was today. Burgess, the featured dancer for January in the 2022: The Gold Standard edition of the show’s annual pin-up calendar, added spice to Fantasy with ballet grace and expertise in Latin steps. She was also able to buy a home, arrange to bring her parents and sister to the States, and was surrounded by a second family of cast members she easily related to. “I’ve taken little breaks here and there, but it’s been such a blessing to me being in the show. I’ve been able to accomplish a lot because of it in my life and grow a lot because of it, and I stayed in it. I don’t want to do any other shows,” she says with a laugh. She attributes the continuing success of the show, which celebrated its 22nd anniversary with grand celebration shows in October, in large part to creator/producer Anita Mann. “She definitely understands us,” says Burgess of the visionary behind the legendary dancers from ’80s top-10 countdown television program Solid Gold. “She’s an incredible, remarkable woman. She paved the way,” She was the first woman to direct cameras on TV and be the boss lady. Solid Gold. I look up to her, and I’m lucky to be working so close to her now because she’s such a mentor to me. I learned a lot from her.” As dance captain, Burgess has a lot of responsibility. New routines are added and new alternates have to learn the moves to ensure there are always eight cast members onstage each night with singer Lorena Peril, who belts out “Proud Mary” during a highlight of Burgess’s choreographic skills as demonstrated by her stage sisters. “We have an ever-changing cast,” says Burgess, who shows her ability to teach salsa on Las Vegas Magazine’s YouTube channel (“Vegas At Home, Ep. 10—Yesi”). “We’re always training new people, and I’m in charge of teaching new cast members, new dancers, new singers, putting them in the show. I’ve gone to a lot of rehearsals, but that’s all good. That’s my favorite part of the job. I love teaching. I love teaching the show.”

Sail away with rock band Styx on the Strip There aren’t many bands with a half-century of history, but it’s been that long since a group of young Chicago-area musicians changed their name to Styx upon signing a recording deal. One of the biggest acts in the world from the late ’70s through the early ’80s, Styx weathered changes in musical trends and personnel as they continued along a path that led to their current inspired phase, one that finds them celebrating their 50th anniversary with a return to the Venetian Theater for a five-show engagement, Jan. 28-Feb. 5, with Heart’s Nancy Wilson as opening act. Had the band not recruited Scottish/Canadian musician Lawrence Gowan in May 1999, Styx may never have made it past the millennium. “In Canada, you couldn’t possibly be unaware of Styx. It was impossible,” the classically trained keyboardist said in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “What really impressed me was they were the first American band that had prog-rock leanings.

iLuminate creator shines a light on dynamic show 34

1.23.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

Miral Kotb is the creator of one of the hottest new shows on the Las Vegas Strip, the art and technology-infused iLuminate at The STRAT. Audiences may be familiar with this talented dance crew and its unique, LED-covered uniforms from past appearances on TV and during live tours, but this version of their vibrant performance can only be found in Las Vegas. After breaking through and building buzz in 2021, Kotb and her talented cast and crew are ready to take iLuminate to the next level this year.

The STRAT 702.380.7711

After opening iLuminate last year, you took it through some pretty big changes and came out on the other end with a really fun, celebratory show. What was that process like? I’m new to Vegas and you always respect every city that you open a show, and how it has a different culture. I wanted to bring something with a little bit of comedy, dance and technology, and what I realized was what people want, knowing us from America’s Got Talent and what we’ve done nationally and internationally, is just that fantastic energy, dancing, the joy, and the mystifying illusions. So we just brought it back, and the audience response has been incredible. It’s a fascinating show for many reasons, and one is just the level of talent onstage, dancers who are expressing so much despite performing on a dark stage wearing full-body suits and masks. It’s an incredible cast. Every single person brings something unique to the table, and they are each über-talented. We’re almost like a jazz band in that every person is talented in their own way, and we feature that, then it all comes together in unison and that’s also great. The way each scene is so carefully choreographed, with the lights on the suits working with the perform-

ers’ movements, must take a lot of time and planning. Does all that programming make it difficult to adjust or add elements in the show? That’s kind of the magic behind it all. I look at myself as almost a light conductor. It is those little details that matter, that millisecond timing that takes it from a cool show to an incredible show. Every single moment is programmed so there are literally millions of cues running in this show, and not only are the dancers wearing the suits, but each light suit has many colors, and each part of the body can be a different color, and it all depends on the music we’re using and mood we want to create for each scene. The preproduction and rehearsals are intense, but once the show opens, you can still see me at the computer nudging something a bit or adding a little something. I call it adding more sparkle. Now in the new year, iLuminate has a new and different schedule at the STRAT Theater. We are very excited to move to the 8 p.m. slot, plus on the weekends we have matinees. It was great to see how many people came with their families at 10 p.m., so hopefully we’ll have more of that now at 8, but also some more dates. It’s a great date show and just for people coming to Vegas to party, because it gets your night started, it gets you into the spirit of having fun. Between the soundtrack, the energy of the dancers and the unique technology, it is a lot of fun and a different kind of fun than Vegas has seen before. It’s such a happy show. You will be dancing in your seat, even if you’re not a dancer, and you will be amazed by the technology, even if you’re not used to going to live shows. If you want to have a good time and smile and laugh, this is the perfect show.

House of Blues at Mandalay Bay 702.632.7600

By Matt Kelemen

SANTANA brings his signature sound back to Strip residency Carlos Santana’s sweet, signature six-stringed sound once again filling the hallowed hall of House of Blues is a sure sign that things are getting back to normal in post-lockdown Las Vegas and the live music world in general. Santana, who returns to the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay on Jan. 26, 28-29, 30 and Feb. 2, put his pandemic time to good use, recording what would become his 26th studio album, Blessings and Miracles, from which a handful of standout tracks have been added to his career-spanning setlist at his HOB residency. His never-ending endeavor to coax timeless tones from his instrument is well represented on the recording, but it’s in a live setting that the musician truly becomes a conduit for metaphysical melodicism. For Santana, life is a search for The Universal Tone, as his 2015 autobiography is titled. It’s a path that began for him as a boy in Jalisco, Mexico, where his father gave young Carlos violin lessons before presenting him with an electric guitar. After his 2019 album Africa Speaks, he was ready to create an

album that reached people much as his 1999 comeback album Supernatural did. Rob Thomas, of Supernatural’s smash hit “Smooth,” is back in the fold to add vocals to “Move,” along with New York City rock band American Authors. Chris Stapleton, Diane Warren, Steve Winwood, Living Colour’s Corey Glover, siblings Salvador and Stella Santana as well as late jazz keyboardist Chick Corea, who passed away last year after a battle with cancer, are part of the star-studded personnel. Stapleton’s co-write, “Joy,” came about after Santana called Stapleton and had a “long conversation about the state of the state of the world,” as Stapleton reveals in a video on Santana’s YouTube channel about the making of Blessings. Santana’s idea was to write a song about the opposite of fear, which resulted in the reggae-tinged tune that Santana included in early November HOB sets. “Nobody involved in Blessings and Miracles sounds as if they’re going through the motions,” writes Steve Erlewine in an Allmusic.com review. With Santana producing, Warren collaboration

“She’s Fire” features muscular guitar injected into a laid-back pop song with drum machines and G-Eazy giving the track trap music flavor. “Song for Cindy” is an instrumental ballad dedicated to the bandleader’s drummer and life partner Cindy Blackman Santana, and features the most expressive guitar playing on the album. Both songs have also been part of Santana’s recent sets, but one album highlight, a cover of Procol Harum’s “Whiter Shade of Pale” with Winwood on vocals, is likely only to make it if Winwood has a Vegas trip planned for the near future. The absence won’t be glaring as Santana plays classics that recently included “Soul Sacrifice,” “Jingo,” “Evil Ways,” “Black Magic Woman” and “Oyo Como Va,” as well as a cover of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There.” Santana’s inspiration shows no sign of slowing, fueled by a multigenerational fan base. “I’m 74, and somehow I’m still relevant,” he says later in the video. “It means if I play the right song at the right time, grandparents, parents, teenagers and children will go, ‘Play it again!’”

Caesars Palace production Absinthe pushes all the boundaries

It’s a question anyone who’s lived long enough in Las Vegas is eventually asked by their guests: “If you could only see one show while you’re in town, which one would it be?” For at least the last 10 years, that answer more often than not is probably Absinthe, a one-of-a-kind production in a one-of-a-kind venue that has been drawing rave reviews since it debuted on the Strip in 2011. It’s the kind of show you can’t wait to tell everyone about once you’ve seen it. Name your favorite celebrity, and odds are they’ve

probably seen the show—many more than once. Even before you enter the Absinthe’s Spiegeltent, you’re excited; how can you not have a sense of wonder upon seeing that huge, festive structure right outside Caesars Palace? It’s easily one of the most eye-catching venues on the entire Strip. And the interior! The whole space is ornately decorated to give it a steampunk feel, making you immediately feel like you’re part of something special. The circular space features a bar, hundreds

of seats, tables, and a smallish circular stage at the center. You might be wondering, “What are they going to be able to fit in there?” As it turns out, plenty. Acts parade across, over and around the space, all connected by the extremely foul-mouthed (and extremely funny) Gazillionaire, a sleazy “producer” who brags about his money when he’s not insulting the audience and abusing his poor assistant, Wanda Widdles, who’s not above being a bit blue herself. The acts themselves are all worldclass, starting with one that may induce vertigo in some audience members—an acrobat slowly ascends to the top of a chair mountain he builds, balancing himself along the way and sometimes actually moving the chair mountain around. Once he reaches the top, down comes The Green Fairy, an iconic part of the show displaying great curves and great pipes as she serenades the crowd with “Come On-A My House.” It’s the perfect segue into the show’s raunchy— but fun—style. Another signature segment includes tap-dancing twins Sean and John Scott, dazzling in their technique and hilarious in the way they constantly try to one-up one another. But there’s so much more to enjoy here, including acrobats, jugglers, sensual dancers, strongmen and a few naughty intermissions that will have you doubled over with laughter. It’s almost impossible to not be swept up in all this craziness and ribaldry. Make sure to grab a drink (or two) at the bar; an altered state only heightens the euphoria you’ll get from the show. Because just like the drink itself, Absinthe is intoxicating—and maybe just a little addictive.

Alaska-born, Seattleraised dancer JD Rainey has been adding his own personal magic to Magic Mike Live Las Vegas since the show first opened in Las Vegas. Onstage, he’s one of the most acrobatic performers you’ll find in this or any other dance-based production on the Strip, pulling incredible tricks and moves he’s been honing for years as a touring artist and founding member of the acclaimed Massive Monkeys dance crew, which won international championships in its heyday. Off the stage, Rainey is the definition of calm and cool, displaying a humble personality influenced by his upbringing in martial arts and sports

and always focused on staying in peak physical and mental shape so he can bring the best version of himself to any endeavor. Your dance crew competed on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and won international championships in London and Korea. What was it like to take this very local style of dance and culture around the world? It was very surreal for us because we were part of this subculture that was like skating in the ’90s. It had its own circuit and had stars within that circuit, wellknown dancers and teams that had the reputation of being the best. People who were into this dance style

knew about these stars, but if you’re not into the culture, you’re oblivious to it. But we got to travel and had sponsors and promoters that paid for it all just so we could compete, and that was our existence from when we were 17 into our mid 20s. We made a name for ourselves and did some monumental things in this subculture that led to more mainstream stuff. What was your first impression of Magic Mike Live Las Vegas, and how did this job come together?

Sahara Las Vegas 18+, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

I was booked on a small tour based on the premiere of the second Magic Mike movie where they would start the movie with a flash mob dance sequence, so I was doing these small performances in the theater to get the audience riled up to see the movie. They just kept me in that network

until the live show started to develop, and the idea of the show and how they pitched it was something intriguing because it was so revolutionary. It took something very stereotypically thought of and flipped it on its head. It was something that was going to change how male revues were looked at. And the fact that we get to be our own stars, our own artists in the show, that was a real selling point because a dancing career has a shelf life, and I wanted to eventually be my own star instead of dancing behind stars. At the time you had been touring as a backup dancer with artists like Chris Brown and Jason Derulo.

Did those experiences prepare you for the way the audience reacts during Magic Mike Live Las Vegas? The first time I heard a girl scream at me at the top of her lungs, that changed everything. I played sports growing up, but I didn’t hear that on the football field. It was like, “What’s going on? That loud squeal, what is that?” That happened from dancing, but I still needed to find a style I liked. I was a big comicbook nerd growing up, so when I found breaking, everything clicked, I needed to do that. The first time I saw someone spin on their head and do a flip and stand up, I thought, “That’s a superpower.”
