Wayne Newton The Legend Returns to the Strip

NOTES

From the Editor The Legend Returns

Before moving to Las Vegas in 2003, the only way I had ever seen Wayne Newton (or heard his music) was through television and movies. But I got the appeal immediately, from his performance as a Professor Joe Butcher in the James Bond movie Licence to Kill to the use of his immortal “Danke Schoen” in one of my favorite movies scenes of the ’80s—Matthew Broderick engaging in a bit of crowd karaoke in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. By the time I actually got to see Newton perform in Vegas (at the now imploded Stardust), I felt a huge connection to him—his energy, his talent, his decency ... the man is just the best. I can’t imagine a more fitting human being getting the title Mr. Las Vegas. And here’s the best part: Newton is still at it! That’s right—you can catch him right now at his newest show, Wayne: Up Close and Personal at Flamingo. (“The Legendary Life,” p. 30). Newton may be getting older, but he’s no less entertaining. In addition to some songs, the legend will regale his audiences with stories from his life. Trust us: This is a memory of Las Vegas you really want to have. Get a ticket now. Speaking of legends ... what’s more Las Vegas than celebrity impersonators? You see them everywhere on the Las Vegas Strip (you’ve probably taken a photo with one or two!). Well, some of the best in the

world are all under one roof at Tropicana Las Vegas: Legends in Concert, a musical tribute show unlike any other in that all the performers not only look like their counterparts, they sing like them too! (“All the Right Moves,” p. 12). The entertainment options certainly don’t stop there. Over at Harrah’s, Donny Osmond is captivating audiences with his solo show (“A Life in Song,” p. 49), while America’s Got Talent winner Terry Fator is still going strong in his latest show at New York-New York (“Puppet Master,” p. 17). Don’t forget to include a great meal as part of your Vegas experience this week. Check out our feature on Picasso at Bellagio (“A Work of Art,” p .24), as much worth visiting for its food as for its art—that’s right, there are actual Picasso works here. If you’re a fan of Dungeness crab, Water Grill at The Forum Shops at Caesars has them for a limited time (“Shell Game,” p. 13”). And Margaritaville at Flamingo is the perfect place to enjoy a meal with the family (“It Helps You Hang On,” p. 17). For some cocktails to round out your dining experience, we recommend the newest bar on the Strip, S Bar at Mandalay Bay (“Smooth Operator,” p. 22). You visited Las Vegas to have a legendary experience. Start by seeing a legend; where you go from there is up to you.

A Whole New Look

Shopping mecca is about to get a complete makeover One of your favorite shopping experiences on the Las Vegas Strip is about to get a whole lot better. Miracle Mile Shops, a 500,000-squarefoot retail mecca that’s been packing in happy shoppers since 2000, will begin an extensive renovation this year, one that promises a completely new look and an even more exciting experience for the consumer. Interior and exterior renovations will begin next winter, with the new look to be unveiled in spring 2023. Aesthetic changes include new flooring, lighting, ceilings and seating, while entertainment changes will include a new sound system and an enhancement of the popular rainstorm feature. And since Miracle Mile Shops also includes plenty of places to dine, renovations will feature plenty of new and upgraded restaurant zones. In addition, the center’s exterior entrances on the Las Vegas Strip and Harmon Avenue will

10

be enhanced to include all-new, state-of-theart LED digital screens and signage, as well as modernized landscaping. And in several interior locations, shoppers can enjoy all-new projection mapping spectacles, meant to captivate imaginations and take viewers on wondrous journeys. “Miracle Mile Shops has been a highly successful shopping and entertainment destination in Las Vegas for over 20 years attracting locals, visitors and international tourists,” said Robert Buchanan, vice president and general manager of Miracle Mile Shops. “The renovations are coming at the ideal time as our city welcomes the return of domestic and international tourists. This is not only an investment in Miracle Mile Shops, but also in one of the world’s most iconic travel destinations, Las Vegas.” And, of course, the center will remain open during construction, meaning you can still enjoy all you favorite spots: Desigual, with trendy,

colorful womenswear; H&M, where if you can imagine it, you’ll probably find it; Yves Chantre Paris, for luxury skincare and makeup; Lululemon for athletic wear; LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, which features some of the best bath bombs ever; LIDS, for top-notch headgear; and Aldo, to put those tootsies in some terrific trappings; and Quiksilver, Karma and Luck, Pandora, Kay Jewelers and Swarovski will let you drape yourself as you see fit. The sports fan will find many options to show pride here—Tervis features cups with a huge array of team logos; The Raider Image showcases products that star Vegas’ pro football team; and TriStar Sports & Celebrity Memorabilia will bring out the treasure hunter in you. And speaking of treasure hunter, there are several cool galleries here, such as Royal Gallery and Wyland Galleries. –Ken Miller Planet Hollywood Resort, 702.866.0703

Long-running tribute celebrates female superstars There are many excellent tribute shows on the Las Vegas Strip, but the longest-running one, Legends in Concert, manages to remain fresh and vital 40 years into its run. It’s an ever-revolving showcase for the best celebrity impersonators on the planet—not only do they look exactly like their real-life counterparts, they move and sing like them, too! Add in a live band and some of the most talented dancers on the Strip—not to mention another Las Vegas legend, drag queen extraordinaire Frank Marino, as host—and you have the quintessential Las Vegas show. Past shows have had themes, including the legends of British rock and legends of country,

12

and the latest show, which kicks off Feb. 2, is a celebration of some of the most influential female superstars of the last five decades. The lineup includes: • Elisa Furr, who recently competed in the reality competition Clash of the Cover Bands, performing as Celine Dion. Expect plenty of goosebump-inducing high notes; • Lisa McClowry, belting out decades of hits, from “Believe” to “If I Could Turn Back Time” as Cher. • Tierney Allen, embodying the all-in-onepackage Lady Gaga and performing hits like “Shallow” and “Poker Face”;

• Janae Longo performing as Adele. For those who lost out on tickets to see the music superstar’s residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, this is the next best thing. Marino, who has been performing on the Strip for decades himself in a variety of different shows, said he’s thrilled to be a part of the Legends experience. “I can honestly say thus far it’s been one of the happiest times in my career,” Marino said in a news release. “Not only is all the management great, but I also I adore everybody in the cast. Working with Legends is like one big family, and I hope this collaboration is one that will go on forever.” –Ken Miller

Shell Game One of the treats for seafood lovers is Dungeness crab season, which is in full swing right now, including at Water Grill in The Forum Shops at Caesars. Dungeness crab is sourced from the west coast of the U.S. (it’s named for Dungeness, Wash., but can be found up and down the coast from Alaska to southern California and it’s actually the state crustacean of Oregon). Water Grill’s crabs come from the San Francisco Bay area. The slightly sweet crab can be prepared in numerous ways, and at Water Grill comes steamed, with drawn butter and homemade coleslaw. If you want to venture into lobster territory, the restaurant has charcoal-grilled spiny lobster from off the coast of southern California, also served with coleslaw. Of course, there are plenty of other dishes to indulge in while you’re here, including calamari, big eye tuna poke, oysters, hamachi nachos, Alaskan black cod, Icelandic Atlantic cod, mahi mahi, sea scallops, and even steak. –Nina King The Forum Shops at Caesars, 702.832.4777

Rise Above Have you ever fantasized about being a government operative or an action hero ? Well, put on your spy shoes and jump on FLY LINQ Zipline for an adventure. Start near Las Vegas Boulevard from a tower that’s 12 stories up. You’ll reach speeds that approach 35 mph. Zoom over the heads of crowds of people, departing as silently as you arrived. There are height and weight requirements, of course. Be sure to obey safety rules—after all, you wouldn’t want to hit a laser, set off the alarm and have to abort the mission. –Nina King The Linq Promenade, 702.777.2782

What a Doll! Perhaps the most popular toy in history has her own homage. Barbie: A Cultural Icon features not only more than 150 vintage dolls, but also interviews from some of the designers responsible for the many different incarnations. “Barbie has an amazing and inspiring history,” said Tim Clothier, the CEO of Illusion Projects Inc., which partnered with toymaker Mattel to produce the exhibit. “There is a real sense of nostalgia when you see what was happening in the world,

and in Barbie’s world, when you were a kid—and then follow the story to how she’s impacting our world today.” For Barbie fans, the holy grail might be the display with the very first doll that Mattel produced in 1959. Inviting and Flavorful When you head to Tao Asian Bistro, you’ll enter a world that seems thousands of miles away. A tunnel past marble tubs, filled with bathers and rose petals, takes you to dark, intimate environs. Statues of Buddha sit in wood-paneled niches behind plush booths, while an inviting bar makes a great place to indulge in a pre-dinner cocktail. In the main dining area, a huge Buddha looks over multiple floors. It all makes for a suitable situation to enjoy Tao’s delicious menu of Asian delights. You’ll want to order family style here, to get the most from dinner (although you can certainly enjoy an entrée all to yourself, if you choose). Appetizers include pork potstickers, Chilean sea bass satay, lobster wontons, and avocado and asparagus tempura. For those larger entrées, choose honey-glazed salmon, crispy orange chicken or the signature 12-ounce Imperial wagyu ribeye with Yuzu-cilantro butter. Share such delights as salmon sashimi; the Tao Angry Dragon roll; pad Thai with peanuts, mushrooms and tofu; Thai duck fried rice; or lobster and kimchi fried rice. –Nina King The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian & The Palazzo, 702.388.8338

The STRAT’s thrill rides will challenge your mettle “You must be high.” Whether or not you’ve ever heard that term in your day-to-day life, you’ll experience it when you head up to the observation deck at The STRAT. At the top of the iconic tower at the hotel-resort are three thrill rides that will leave you feeling brave and bemused, dazed and confused, all at the same time. The story of those amusement rides begins with the gala opening of The STRAT casino in 1996, where two rides were introduced: The Big Shot and the Let It Ride High Roller coaster. The drop tower ride Big Shot, looking like the biggest

ring-the-bell game you’ve ever seen, propels its riders straight up at approximately 45 mph from 921 feet to 1,081 feet. Although the roller coaster closed in 2005, two other heart-pounding rides opened. The X-Scream actually emulates a roller coaster itself, as a car rolls back and forth on a piece on track. Of course, it’s not exactly the gentlest of motions, and it may just startle the heck out of you. And then, of course, it’s time to get tipped over the edge—and if that doesn’t freak you out, we don’t know what will.

Wait, we do know what will: The huge arcing arms of the inverted centrifuge ride Insanity, which hangs you 64 feet over the edge of the tower while rapidly spinning (3 Gs). And it’s not even level—you will be spinning at an angle. Oh, sweet geez. All the rides have separate requirements, from age to height, weight and medical restrictions. Bonus thrill points: Jump off the tower. Yes, you can, on SkyJump, a controlled plummet all the way to the bottom, 855 feet down. Chicken out? You? No way. –Nina King

The Las Vegas Strip is populated with America’s Got Talent contestants, but Terry Fator was the first. His skill as a singer, ventriloquist and impersonator—quite the trifecta—is unmatched on the Las Vegas Strip; he has a wide variety of dummies he works with while impersonating—and throwing— the voices of everyone from Garth Brooks and Michael Jackson to Etta James and Paul McCartney. What adds to the entertainment value of Fator’s show, Who’s the Dummy Now?, is the unique personality all his dummies have. There’s Elvis impersonator Maynard Thompkins, who keeps getting ready to perform but can never seem to actually do so; Vikki the Cougar, whose libido threatens to take the entire show off the rails (but never does); Duggie Scott Walker, a very chill dude who would have been great friends with Cheech & Chong (if you know what we mean); and Walter T. Airdale, a country singer who can never seem to remember how many ex-wives he has. As much as you’ll remember Fator’s impersonations, you’ll remember the puppets equally vividly. Fator is also careful to alternate puppets from show to show, almost guaranteeing you’ll never see the same show twice. –Ken Miller

It Helps You Hang On It’s one of the biggest venues fronting the Las Vegas Strip, and also one of the funnest: Margaritaville is your headquarters for kicking back, ordering a tall, cold drink and forgetting the cares of the day. And with 12,000 square feet spread across three levels, there’s never going to be a problem finding a table or a seat at one of the six bars. In addition to wonderful signature drinks like Changes in Latitudes (given a boost

with Tropical Red Bull), indulge in shareable plates like Lava Lava shrimp, served with Thai chile sauce, and wings (the Caribbean jerk sauce is the best). Then move onto entrées like the Land Shark fish and chips (coated in batter made with the delicious beer brand) and the Cheeseburger in Paradise, featuring a 7-ounce patty and all the toppings. If you don’t have the time of your life here, it could be your fault. –Ken Miller Flamingo, 702.733.3302

Paul Saginaw

A boy from Michigan is living his Vegas dream “Most of my friends are retiring and here I am opening new operations at the age of 70, but I feel great,” says Paul Saginaw, owner of Saginaw’s Delicatessen at Circa Resort & Casino. “Here, I’m back where I started—I’m back with the staff, with the food, with the customers and that’s what I first fell in love with. I feel like this is great; I can just keep going.” Back in 1982, Saginaw and a friend opened a delicatessen called Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Mich. “All we wanted was to make a great corned beef sandwich and have an organization with soul,” he says. Fast forward to today and Saginaw now operates 11 businesses in Ann Arbor—from coffee roasting and candy manufacturing to a bakery and Korean restaurant—under the Zingerman’s brand. About six years ago, “I got the email equivalent of a cold call from Derek Stevens, owner of The D,” Saginaw says. “He’s from Detroit and went to the University of Michigan and would

eat at our deli and wanted to bring our brand out here.” While Saginaw said he didn’t bring his brand outside of Michigan he’d still like to help, so he ended up opening a coffee stand at The D, which serves Zingerman’s coffee. And when Stevens had plans to open Circa, Saginaw was tapped once again to open a deli inside the new property—and Saginaw’s Delicatessen was born. Saginaw is also owner of Circa’s modern coffee stand, Jack Pots, where they also serve Zingerman’s coffee. “I felt like I won the lottery,” Saginaw says. “I always wanted to have a business in Las Vegas. When I first realized that food and hospitality was going to be a career, my dream job was to be a food and beverage manager in a casino and live in a penthouse on the top floor of the hotel. So, I almost made it—I have a delicatessen and a coffee shop on the second floor of a casino, and I live three blocks away on the eighth floor of a condo building.” –Kiko Miyasato

Newest lounge from sbe elevates the simple cocktail Tucked close to Light Nightclub in Mandalay Bay is the newly opened S Bar (it opened on New Year’s Eve). This elevated lounge is in the former Red Square area, but it has been entirely redone. S Bar, a franchise from sbe popular in L.A., reflects a retro 1920s vibe in a modern, sophisticated way. The entrance, with curving brass-colored walls and double wood-and-glass doors, reflects that art deco influence. A black marble bar lined with upholstered blue barstools is accented by fringe hanging from the ceiling, creating the look of a tiered chandelier (or a flapper’s skirt). There’s also a small DJ booth, plus intimate booths, tables, and sultry photography throughout.

The Moonage Daydream is an unusual sip with pisco, a salted honeydew peanut cordial, tarragon and egg whites, while the Umeshu Highball combines Ume whiskey, Montenegro amaro and shisho plum wine.

The menu degustation is the most popular and includes the Chef’s Feature—jamon Iberico de bellota, served with pan de cristal and marinated tomato (a supplemental charge, but so worth it!) Your first three courses include delights like a Maine lobster salad with sauce American, tomato, citrus and caviar, pan-seared U-10 day boat scallops served with potato mousseline and jus de veau, and sautéed steak of “A” foie gras, accompanied

by saffron-poached pears, cranberry and wild rice granola. Then you get your choice of main courses—Japanese wagyu filet mignon, sautéed filet of Chilean sea bass or prime petit filet mignon. Wrong choices? We don’t think so!

The prix fixe menu is also a great way to go, where your first- and second-course choices include poached oysters with vermouth beurre blanc and Osetra caviar and sautéed crispy gnocchi made with Alaskan king crab and nantua sauce. Main courses include a roasted milk-fed veal chop served with rosemary potatoes and au jus, and a pan-seared branzino smothered with court bouillon sauce. There’s also a vegetarian menu which is no less decadent and flavorful. Enjoy roasted delicata squash, served with mushroom escabeche, plancha Chinese eggplant accompanied by hazelnut, sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onions and raisins, and sautéed asparagus and mushrooms. Want to pair your meal with a glass of wine? You’ve definitely come to the right place, as Picasso boasts one of the biggest wine collections on the Strip—more than 1,500 labels, all from the finest European vineyards. If you’re more of a spirits fan, choose from a list of more than 150 top-shelf options. And by all means, please take the time to just sit back and really take in your surroundings. This one-of-a-kind restaurant is one you’ll be thinking about years after dining there.

selection and enjoy the beautiful simplicity of griddled corn tortillas, high quality ingredients and rustic salsas and toppings that make Tacos El Gordo one of the most memorable eating experiences in the city. There’s a new challenger for the title of best Strip-side taco stand and it’s right across the street at Resorts World. San Diego transplant Tacos El Cabrón (725.204.7767), which also operates its first Vegas store near UNLV, has popped open an outdoor eatery right on the Boulevard, perfect for grabbing a late-night snack during a busy night out on the Strip. Add some melty cheese to your favorite taco for a quesadilla-like experience—a “quesataco”—or check out the selection of burritos, topped French fries and bowls. El Dorado Cantina (702.722.2289) is a unique, ingredient-driven Mexican restaurant that got its start just off the Strip adjacent to Sapphire gentleman’s club and has expanded with a few other suburban locations sprinkled about the Vegas Valley. Its menu is vast but there’s no reason to skip its impressive tacos, served in a trio of street-style tacos with carnitas, carne asada, al pastor or pulled chicken, or as a larger duo of tacos with rice and beans including filet mignon, lobster, shrimp, or crispy fish options. There’s a reason locals and visitors make it a point to return to El Dorado Cantina again and again. Similarly, Diablo’s Cantina (702.262.5225) is a vibrant restaurant that serves much more than just tacos, but its two Strip spots at The Mirage and Luxor have certainly perfected this popular signature dish. Check out the filet alambre tacos, flour tortillas filled with steak tips, bacon, roasted poblano peppers and cheese, or the slow-roasted pork carnitas tacos topped with pickled onions. You won’t find these flavors anywhere else. Back out in the ’burbs at Downtown Summerlin, the new and clubby hot spot La Neta Cocina (702.476.5484) is serving up something that they call BFTs (Big F’n Tacos). This unique taco take is as photo-worthy as it is satisfying, with multiple options including a whole butter-poached lobster, corn purée and fennel-citrus slaw in a cheese-stuffed flour tortilla, or grilled skirt steak and truffle cheese fondue with crispy onions in a crisp, golden shell. These aren’t your mother’s tacos, but they’re definitely worth the trip. –Brock Radke

Flamingo 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

As the first hotel and casino to open on what is now the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, the Flamingo made its debut the day after Christmas in 1946. That means the pink-hued landmark just passed its milestone 75th birthday, as if it needed anything else to cement its legacy as an icon of Las Vegas. But wait, there’s more. This month, Mr. Las Vegas himself returned to the Flamingo to begin a new residency show. Wayne Newton, who first performed in Las Vegas in the late 1950s as a teenager with his brother Jerry, first achieved headliner status in 1963 at this very resort. And he’s recounting many of the memorable tales from his unique career in entertainment—in Vegas and beyond—with this latest evolution of his celebrated Wayne: Up Close and Personal performance. The singer, actor, philanthropist and multi-instrument musician has of course had many residencies on and off the Strip through the years, at historic casinos including the Stardust, Las Vegas Hilton and Caesars Palace. He was part-owner

of the Aladdin for several years and his multimillion-dollar deal at the Stardust, which occupied the Strip spot where the new Resorts World Las Vegas opened last year, is considered one of the first major modern residencies, predating Celine Dion’s historic run at Caesars Palace. Newton made more Vegas history a little more than five years ago when he joined The Killers as the opening acts for T-Mobile Arena, the 20,000-seat home of the Vegas Golden Knights and one of the most popular sports and entertainment venues in the country. It’s estimated that Newton has performed more than 25,000 shows in Las Vegas for some 40 million people. You simply cannot separate Las Vegas from Wayne Newton; one is not the same without the other. And that’s why his show at the Flamingo’s intimate Bugsy’s Cabaret theater space is so significant—every performance is making more history. Never before have his fans had such access and proximity to this legendary entertainer, and he’s going out of his way to connect with every mem-

ber of the audience through music, stories and constant interaction. He’s one of those rare artists who attracts fans of varied generations, too. Consider that an entire new audience fell in love with his signature song, “Danke Schoen,” after Matthew Broderick lip-synced the hit while crashing a parade in 1986 flick Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Newton is definitely revisiting that track in his Flamingo show, as well as favorites like “Red Roses for a Blue Lady,” “Summer Wind,” and “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast.” He shares some archival videos with highlights and personal moments from a life onstage, brings out the banjo to show his stuff, and allows plenty of time for audience questions and requests. Wayne: Up Close and Personal is aptly named and almost makes you feel like you’ve been friends with this superstar for years. It’s hard not to feel a part of the special relationship Wayne Newton has with Las Vegas and the Flamingo hotel and casino. This performance is the epitome of what the city built its reputation on.

THE AGE OF IMMERSIVE ART experiences is in its embryonic stage, a digital dawning that will only evolve as shows dedicated to The Masters tantalize audiences, NFTs create new revenue streams for artists and metaverses enable new frontiers in virtual reality. Londonbased illustrator Vince Fraser can be considered a pioneer in perfecting a blend of sight and sound while illuminating where the immersive path can lead with Ase: Afro Frequencies, a stunning AfroSurrealist exhibit that runs through April 18 at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art. Fraser collaborated with spoken-word artist Ursula Rucker to create Ase for a show at Miami experiential gallery space Artechouse that ran from May until December. Less than two weeks after it closed in the Sunshine State it was installed at BGFA and ready for perusal in Las Vegas. Ase: (ah-shay), a philosophical belief held by the Yoruba people of West Africa, is drawn on to invoke power and change. The word itself can be translated as “as it shall be done,” while the wielders of the spiritual life force that cause change are considered alaase. The alaase here are Fraser, Rucker and the Artechouse creatives who served as sound designers and function facilitators. The Vegas exhibit’s three main components include the Egungun series, which captures viewers’ images on video canvasses and grafts tribal African masks onto their faces. Egungun refers

Nancy Wilson’s Heart makes its Vegas debut at Styx shows There can be second acts in American lives, sometimes more. Nancy Wilson launched the third act of her musical career with

the May release of her debut solo album You and Me, following up with a stint as special guest for Styx’s five-show 50th anniversary engagement at Venetian Theatre (through Feb. 5). The Venetian shows not only mark the debut of her band, Nancy Wilson’s Heart, in Las Vegas but also create a historical moment as Styx joins Wilson mid-show for Heart songs, and Wilson jams along to Styx classics.

The date of You and Me’s release alone indicates that Wilson managed to channel her creative energy during the height of pandemic panic. “I was kind of freaked out like everybody else,” she says. “I figured I’d better aim my focus on music because that’s going to keep me sane for one thing. ‘Do something productive and creative,’ because that’s all I really know how to do. My whole

purpose for being here is to do something creative and meaningful to other people.” That endeavor led her to reunite with songwriter Sue Ennis, who began collaborating with Heart on 1978’s Dog and Butterfly and wrote that album’s “Mistral Wind,” a favorite of Wilson’s. Ennis co-wrote You and Me’s title cut, a song dedicated to Wilson’s mother, but the first single from the album

was a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising” released last fall. It features stinging slide playing from Nancy Wilson’s Heart guitarist Ryan Waters, who shares the stage with drummer Ben Smith, bassist Andy Stoller and keyboardist Dan Walker. Also on board is singer Kimberly Nichole, who handles the more powerhouse vocals on Heart songs from Act I (’70s) and Act II (’80s through 2013’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction) of Wilson’s career. Nichole made the playoffs of The Voice in 2015, and weaved her vocals with Wilson’s in a cover of The Cranberries’ “Dreams” on You and Me. Now she’s joining Wilson at The Venetian to harmonize along with Styx. Wilson cites “Crystal Ball” as a song she’d like to perform with Styx, while Nichole enables her to include songs such as “Straight On” and “Crazy on You” in Nancy Wilson’s Heart sets. She’ll sing lead on “These Dreams,” of course, and likely choose from a selection of current favorite covers including Pearl Jam’s “Daughter” and Paul Simon’s “The Boxer.” The Venetian shows with Styx also allows Wilson to envision a residency of her own in Las Vegas, which could easily have a “storyteller” element. Heart’s career is now part of rock mythology and Wilson, an inspiration to several generations of musicians, has a personable way of expressing herself that would translate well to headlining extended engagements in the city. “I had this idea that it would be pretty cool to lean into a potential residency for Nancy Wilson’s Heart,” she says. “And Styx is an amazing band. They have so many big hits. … I think it’s all stuff that leads to other stuff that’s really fun to do.”

By Kiko Miyasato There are plenty of ways to enjoy Las Vegas other than the Strip. Get outdoors for a solo trip or bring your partner or family and check out nine great biking experiences. Whether it’s checking out the beautiful scenery on a nice slow-paced ride or putting your cycling skills to the test, there’s great options for everyone.

1

RIVER MOUNTAINS LOOP TRAIL You can actually access this bike path from the Union Pacific Railroad trail. Just cross over the bridge and this path will take you to popular points like Lake Las Vegas and Hoover Dam. This loop is more than 35 miles, so pick your paths wisely if you don’t plan on making this a long trip. The paved trails are surrounded by the River Mountains where big-horned sheep roam, so don’t be surprised if you catch sight of some along the way.

UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD TRAIL Ride nearly 8 miles following the railway tracks through the city of Henderson, a neighborhood just a short drive from the Strip. The tree-lined trails cut through residential and shopping areas and for the most part are a breeze to bike, making them good for families with little ones.

Q&A

Room for Improvement

Why staging a key area could make a world of difference in selling your home You’ve made the decision to sell your home. But are you confident that it will sell quickly once prospective buyers get a look at the interior? If not, that’s where Stately Home Staging comes in. The Las Vegas-based company specializes in really making areas of your home pop, and this week’s installment focuses on one of the most important: The living room. This issue, Las Vegas Magazine’s Ken Miller interviewed Heidi Carlsen, lead interior designer with Stately Home Staging, to get some answers that will hopefully make you make a more informed decision when you are selling your property.

44

1.30.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

Why is the living room so important to stage when selling a home? The living room is arguably one of the most utilized spaces in the home, where people spend a majority of their time. It’s a place for entertaining, spending quality time with loved ones and relaxing. Because of this, it’s important to take extra special care in staging this area so that potential buyers can truly visualize themselves cozying up with family or entertaining company. What are some of the most important things to remember when staging the living room?

It’s important to take into account how the space is going to be used by skillfully demonstrating its capabilities through design—all while simultaneously overcoming any obstacles the room may present. These obstacles often play a role in why the home may not be selling. Is the living room too large or too long? Are there floor-to-ceiling windows and very minimal wall space? In these instances, it’s important to show the buyers how to make the room function for their lifestyle. You must inspire them to think about where furniture could be placed, where a TV might be set up, or where other entertaining may happen.

Courtesy photos

LVING

It’s also important to remember that when it comes to style, to not be exceedingly taste-specific. Neutral colors are ideal and personal items from previous owners should be discarded for the staging. In general, why is staging important? First impressions are everything. Staging emphasizes a home’s strengths and minimizes its weaknesses. It allows the property to be showcased at its maximum potential. How much experience does your company have in this field? Stately Home Staging has an extensive background in retailing luxury furnishings and interior design. We have been staging for almost three years.
