NOTES

From the Editor Yes, It’s Magic

Barry Manilow, who enjoys a successful residency at Westgate Las Vegas, has many hits in his repertoire, but one that he always performs is “Could It Be Magic.” It’s a perfect song title for Las Vegas, where magic is a constant theme. It’s certainly a constant theme in this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine. Let’s start with the magicians of America’s Got Talent who are now headlining their own shows in Las Vegas: Shin Lim at The Mirage (“In the Cards,” p. 30); Piff the Magic Dragon at Flamingo (“Absurdly Entertaining,” p. 34); and Mat Franco at The Linq Hotel (“All In,” p. 40). As much as you enjoyed watching them on TV, there’s nothing that compares to seeing them live and up close. Speaking of America’s Got Talent and live shows, one of the hottest tickets at the moment is America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live at Luxor, which features a lineup of some of the show’s best acts over the years (including, in keeping with this week’s theme, magician Justin Tavella, who won season 16). This week, editor at large Brock Radke spoke with stand-up comedian and AGT competitor Preacher Lawson, who hosts the Luxor show (“The Host With the Most,” p. 38). The “magic” continues with Magic Mike Live at Sahara Las Vegas, which now fea-

tures two new cast members for a limited time: Johnny Dutch and Nate Bryan, who won first and runner-up, respectively, on HBO Max reality competition Finding Magic Mike. Freelance writer Matt Kelemen spoke to both men about their experiences on the show (“Star Turn,” p. 36). It’s a revealing, emotional look at what it takes to get your shot on the Las Vegas Strip. For a different kind of magic, check out Banachek’s Mind Games Live at The STRAT (“Real Magic?” p. 17). Just prepare to pick your jaw up off the floor more than once. And then there are just those Las Vegas experiences that many consider magical: Cirque du Soleil’s water-based production “O” at Bellagio (“Liquid Love,” p. 12); meals at high-end restaurants like Bouchon at The Venetian (“Welcome In,” p. 24), Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas (“Making the Cut,” p. 11), International Smoke at MGM Grand (“Star Power,” p. 17) and Hearthstone at Red Rock Resort (“Got What You Want,” p. 13); and concerts like Katy Perry at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Play Time,” p. 10) and Jason Isbell at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“Going Strong,” p. 32). Barry Manilow sings his classic song as if he’ll never quite know the answer. But when it comes to Las Vegas, the answer is clear: How could it not be?

So Much to Enjoy Odds are many of you have checked out Circa Resort & Casino by now, Derek Stevens’ latest project in Las Vegas. If you have, you know that he’s all about the complete experience, including great food. And it all started with Andiamo Steakhouse, Stevens’ world-class restaurant at his first property in Sin City, The D.

Courtesy photo

You really feel like you’ve stepped back in time once you walk through Andiamo’s doors. This is a classic steakhouse in every sense, from the servers who prepare Caesar salads tableside (a highlight we really recommend) to the classic cocktails on the menu. Couples will want to consider the grande meatball (pictured), or the 32-ounce tom-

ahawk, a massive ribeye that will turn every head. Whatever you decide on, we recommend the restaurant’s signature “Zip” sauce. There’s simply nothing else like it in town. There’s also lamb chops, veal osso buco and a Berkshire pork chop for meat lovers, as well as a vast pasta menu. Shrimp scampi here is a can’t-miss option. –Ken Miller

Play Time

Superstar’s residency pulls out all the stops Densely packed with hit songs and fan favorites, some of the biggest and silliest stage props ever seen in a Vegas show, and an eye-popping, kaleidoscopic array of colorful video content and production effects, Katy Perry’s Resorts World Las Vegas residency, Play, follows the journey of Katy Doll, who is purchased from a vending machine at the Perry Playground arcade and mistreated by a boy named Henry in a sort of twisted version of Toy Story. A psychedelic animated video creates the narrative as Perry assumes the live-action role of Katy Doll, performing rollicking versions of “California Gurls” and “Waking Up in Vegas” after emerging from a 16-foot-tall orange toilet

bowl, where the cartoon Henry thoughtlessly deposited the cartoon Katy. This is the second act, after Perry has already dueted with the equally gigantic and quite musical bed and chair on “Chained to the Rhythm,” showing shades of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Katy Doll makes her way from the bathroom to the backyard and into a trash can before being retrieved by a loving little girl and reunited with her friends from the arcade—you know, Left Shark and the Roaring Lion and all the rest. Perry shuffles through an infinite supply of brilliant costumes created by Zaldy, Heather Picchiottino and Johnny Wujek, and never seems to tire of cranking out the hits like “Hot N Cold,” “I Kissed

a Girl,” “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake.” She slowed briefly for a quick version of 2007 track “Lost,” eliciting more shrieks from fans clamoring for deep cuts. The finale finds Perry going full Vegas glam in an incredible yellow and orange rhinestone dress and parading with her singers and dancers across a sprawling, sparkling staircase, belting out “Teenage Dream,” “Smile” and “Roar.” Then she returns by herself for the most powerful vocal performance of the show on Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All” and her own 2010 megahit “Firework.” It’s the best of Perry and Vegas, all in one colorful package. –Brock Radke Resorts World Las Vegas, axs.com

Westgate Las Vegas, 702.732.5277

Take Your Swing Do you have a drive to succeed? But you’d rather that drive be with a golf club in your hand? Get to Topgolf Las Vegas, where you can play games in the multitiered driving range that go from beginner (like Angry Birds) to advanced. You can even virtually play some of the top courses in the world. If you want to improve your game, it’s possible to book lessons, too. With plenty of food and drink to accompany your games, it’s a guaranteed good time. –Nina King 4627 Koval Lane, 702.933.8458 Edge Steakhouse courtesy photo Adventuredome photo by Christopher DeVargas Topgolf Las Vegas photo by Michael Baxter/Baxter Imaging LLC

For one of the best steaks in Vegas, head to Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas. Start with a classic shrimp cocktail (you really don’t see those much in Vegas, so you’d better take advantage). Wedge salads and French onion soup are always popular—and with good reason. Cuts include filet mignon, bone-in and dry-aged, ribeyes, dry-aged New York strip, and a wagyu strip loin that’s to die for. Half roast chicken, Skuna Bay salmon and Alaskan red king crab legs give you even more options for your entrée. Top those off with caramelized onions, seared scallops, or roasted bone marrow. And for a decadent side, the portobello mushroom stuffed with Boursin cheese, or mac and cheese, with three cheeses and black truffle, will really give your mouth something to celebrate. And dessert? Try a trio of ice cream, cheesecake or Tahitian créme brûlée—or go big with a chocolate sphere with brownie, praline nut crunch, chocolate mousse and salted caramel sauce. –Nina King

Rides and Much More It may be a bit chilly and windy outside, but inside Adventuredome, it’s always the right time to head out with the family and play carnival games, ride a roller coaster or watch the tykes ride the merry-go-round. For the adrenaline junkies in the family, check out this trio of high-speed attractions: Canyon Blaster roller coaster, which has two loops and corkscrews and reaches

speeds of 55 mph; El Loco, another coaster that drops you 90 feet with some serious G’s; and Sling Shot, which shoots you in the air and back down again. Elsewhere in this 5-acre playground, play arcade games, hop on a rock-climbing wall and bungee jump. There’s also an Extreme Ride Theater, featuring 4D movies. –Ken Miller Circus Circus, 702.794.3939

Liquid Love

Cirque du Soleil’s water-based production shines Often described as surreal and ethereal, Cirque du Soleil’s landmark production “O” at Bellagio is more than the Montreal-based entertainment giant’s most successful show around the world. It’s one of the most technically advanced theatrical presentations anywhere, arguably equally iconic in Las Vegas to the wondrous dancing fountains that front the hotel and casino at the heart of the Strip. The water is perhaps the most celebrated element of “O”, the 1.5-million-gallon pool that serves as the diffuse foundation of one of the Strip’s all-time greatest venues. No matter how many times one has visited this theater inspired by a 14th-century European opera house, the way that water is used so masterfully to convey

12

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

the idea of infinity and other otherworldly themes continues to astound. Once the curtain rises and the stage is revealed, the introductory scene makes dramatic and immediate use of the beautiful proscenium as red-coated characters fly across the space and a trapeze duo act sets the tone. An island arises in the middle of this magical body of water and an impressive hand-balancing act performs on seemingly stable ground, a physical connection that gradually builds the scale of the show. When it seems things have taken a serious turn, it’s time to bring out the clowns, resting on the roof of their floating home. “O” is constantly, effortlessly, balancing between scenes of smile-inducing whimsy and emotional, high-ten-

sion moments. And there’s a full band along with live vocalists filling the theaters with music. Of course, everyone has favorite acts and scenes from “O”: perhaps the joyous celebration when the acrobats emerge to play on the powerful Russian swing; or the near finale when a trapeze artist descends from above, balancing on her head; or the inside-joke, blink-and-you’llmiss-it moment when the show’s underwater scuba crew surfaces like a squadron of beached seals. There are times to laugh and cheer and times to sit quietly, stunned at the artistry and befuddled at the creativity behind this masterpiece. And then there is the desire to come back and see it all over again. –Brock Radke Bellagio, 888.488.7111

Got What You Want Have you got a crew who aren’t quite sure if they want burgers or pizza or steak? Haul them off to Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar at Red Rock Resort, where you can find all those items, but given a lift with quality ingredients and an extensive wine list for the vino aficionado. Some of the highlights here might include tuna pizza; a flaming crab dip with toasted garlic naan; lollipop chicken wings; and a charcuterie board. Wood-burning stoves provide a great ambience. Go light with salads like the roasted beet, Caesar, and apple and quinoa. You can add chicken or shrimp if you need a little extra protein. The prime rib French dip features caramelized onions, Swiss cheese and horseradish cream, while the cheeseburger can be amplified with egg, bacon or avocado. The restaurant makes a mean Impossible burger, too, with vegan cheese and avocado spread. Hearthstone offers an array of entrées, from steak and chicken to salmon and pasta. As might be expected with wood-burning ovens, there are pizzas like pepperoni, meatball, short rib and truffle. –Nina King Red Rock Resort, 702.797.7344

Immersive Art London-based illustrator Vince Fraser can be considered a pioneer in perfecting a blend of sight and sound while illuminating where the immersive path can lead with Ase: Afro Frequencies, a stunning Afro-Surrealist exhibit that runs through April 18 at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art. Fraser collaborated with spoken-word artist Ursula Rucker to create Ase for a show in Miami that ran from May until December. Less than two weeks after it closed, it was installed at BGFA. Ase (ah-shay), a philosophical belief held by the Yoruba people of West Africa, is drawn on to invoke power and change. The word itself can be translated as “as it shall be done.” Here, masks move and change size as participants learn to position themselves effectively in front of adjacent cameras. The result is in-the-moment intrigue that sparks interest in the meaning behind the masks. They scintillate with the observer’s movements, but not quite so astoundingly as in Afrotude, where depth cameras concoct a life-sized figure that mesmerizingly pulses and revolves to the beats in front of a kinetic floor-projection that serves as animated carpeting. –Matt Kelemen

But fans of Ramsay will love the Notes From Gordon, a cocktail featuring Plymouth dry gin, green tea, lemongrass, peach and lemon. In addition to a delicious sip, you’ll get a note with the drink containing a bon mot Ramsay has said on his show. (“This crab is so undercooked, it just told me its name is Sebastian!”) Most know about Ramsay’s beef Wellington, a juicy cut of meat surrounded by a pastry shell in

a red wine demi-glace, but explore the rest of the menu and you’ll find other delights. Jidori chicken scallopini is pure decadence, served with roasted pee wee potatoes, artichokes and lacinato kale, while crispy skin salmon is perfectly complemented by warm white beans, sea bean salad, Iberico chorizo, all in a citrus beurre blanc. It wouldn’t be a Gordon Ramsay experience without the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, but if you want a change of pace, there’s also salted peanut decadence, a caramelized peanut crisp and peanut butter crémeux, served with salted peanut ice cream. –Ken Miller Caesars Palace, 702.731.7373

Lighting up a successful career in cigars Ian Floranza is the man to know when it comes to enjoying cigars in Las Vegas. Not only does he serve as general manager for the Strip’s newest cigar hot spot, Eight Lounge at Resorts World, the Michigan native has nearly two decades of experience in the cigar industry. In the early ’00s, while trying to launch a career in film production, Floranza’s side hustle was working retail at Davidoff of Geneva inside Mandalay Bay to earn money; he ended up working for Davidoff for 17 years. “I worked every aspect in that company and learned a great deal of knowledge,” he says. “I worked my way from sales to manager of the stores and worked at every location in Vegas—I even opened up the one at Fashion Show. Cigars—it’s a great, fun industry. As the saying goes, ‘You never work a day in your life if you love what you do.’” Last year, it was time for Floranza to make a change (still sticking with the cigar industry,

though). He joined Eight Lounge while it was being constructed. Today, he helps run the cigar bar and lounge frequented by celebs including Luke Bryan, Darren Waller, Michael Jordan and A-Rod. “Eight Lounge is my baby,” says Floranza. “It’s an upscale lounge to get together with friends and enjoy the amenities of a cigar bar and create memories.” Eight also has star amenities, like a humidor packed with cigars for purchase, and a huge patio for hanging out. “And our filtration is the best in the nation,” he says. “Once every four minutes, it brings fresh new air, no circulation.” Guests can spot Floranza throughout the evening, walking around the lounge, helping guests pick cigars and pair cocktails, and talking shop. “Dealing with people always has, always will be, my favorite part,” he says. “The common bond between two people in the cigar industry is that cigar, and they can just start a conversation from there.” –Kiko Miyasato

Piero’s Italian Cuisine

Vegas Greats

Celebrities and locals alike flock to classic venues Plenty of Las Vegas resorts, attractions, entertainers and shows are frequently described as “legendary.” Restaurants are a different story. Because those casino destinations on the Strip are constantly upgrading their offerings to keep visitors coming back for more, the dining scene is forever in flux; even the most beloved restaurants are often transitioned into something new.

But there are legendary restaurants in this city, on and off the Strip, and the best place to begin this discussion is likely at Piero’s Italian Cuisine (702.369.2305), a 40-year-old Italian institution across from the new Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall. Owner Freddie Glusman, who celebrated his 85th birthday earlier this month, has long been one of the

city’s most celebrated hosts, known to spend time with Las Vegas leaders, pro athletes and entertainers. But locals and Vegas visitors alike keep coming back to Piero’s, recently enshrined in the Las Vegas Magazine Hall of Fame, month after month, year after year, because of the oneof-a-kind atmosphere and the classic cuisine, especially signature dishes like the Caesar salad,

pasta fagioli, linguine and clams, and housemade pappardelle with mushrooms, white wine, garlic and thyme. Back on the Boulevard, Circus Circus is moving into the future while maintaining its most iconic dining room, The Steak House (702.794.3767), a favorite for more than 30 years. Known for broiling prime Midwestern beef over mesquite charcoal, this restaurant continues a grand tradition of fine service and simple, high-quality cuisine at much more affordable prices than you’ll find at many of the Strip’s other great steak spots. Once you choose your cut and maybe an added lobster tail or king crab legs, your meal comes with all the trimmings, including fresh-baked breads, soup or salad, vegetable and potato sides. It’s far from fine dining, but the equally legendary Peppermill (702.735.4177) just across the street is still a hot spot for cocktails at its neon-hued Fireside Lounge and satisfying diner fare around the clock in its comfy dining room. Catch some great people-watching in the wee hours here as post-show and post-nightclub revelers flock to the Peppermill to enjoy a latenight nosh on breakfast favorites, mountains of nachos, deli-style sandwiches and juicy halfpound burgers. Far from the lights of the Strip, the oldest Mexican restaurant in the state of Nevada happily serves great food in a casual environment from its Boulder Highway location in Henderson. First opened in 1975, El Torito Café (702.564.2309) is a different kind of legend, one that has fed generations of local families for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Familiar fare such as enchiladas, chile rellenos, sizzling fajitas and pork chile verde are some of the most popular dishes at this friendly spot. And as far as family-friendly eateries go, any longtime Las Vegan will point you in the direction of Metro Pizza (702.736.1955), founded by two affable cousins from New York, John Arena and Sam Facchini, in 1980 and now serving slices and pies and a whole lot more at five locations scattered around the valley. This kitchen’s dedication to freshness and quality ingredients shines through, and one of its newest creations, the 86th Street Sicilian-style square pizza, has been awarded at the International Pizza Expo Challenge, which is returning to Las Vegas next month. It doesn’t get any more legendary than that. –Brock Radke Peppermill Sun Media file The Steak House photo by Peter Harasty Metro Pizza photo by Christopher DeVargas

Shin Lim continues amazing Las Vegas audiences

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

By KEN MILLER

By the time Shin Lim first hit the stage of America’s Got Talent in 2018, judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel had seen many magicians over the years (including winner Mat Franco), and were learning to truly judge magic acts with a critical eye. But none of them were prepared for what Lim brought to the table—literally. As stunned host Tyra Banks looked on, Lim proceeded to put on a magic clinic at a small, felt-lined table, making cards (and entire decks) go through various states of matter, turning blank, clear, and even encased in a solid brick. The stunned looks on everyone’s faces made it clear: Lim was on his way to superstardom. Not only did he handily win season 13, he remains the only champion to win twice (on America’s Got Talent: The

Champions). No one who saw him on TV (or voted for him) was in the least bit surprised when his Las Vegas residency at The Mirage was announced in 2019. And no one who’s seen his Las Vegas show leaves disappointed. What makes Lim so accessible to audiences is his humility; he’s not afraid to share the stage with another amazing talent, in this case fellow AGT competitor Colin Cloud, a mentalist who’s also an adept comedian, engaging the audience in between Lim’s feats of wonder. In a way, Cloud is the perfect foil to Lim: What better way to enjoy mind-blowing magic than with comic interludes? The pacing is perfect throughout, with Lim’s elegant illusions (often scored to romantic music like Sting’s “Shape of My Heart”) punctuated by Cloud having a bit of fun with the audience. The pandemic shutdown of 2020 gave Lim plenty of time to work on new material. One of the most noteworthy involves a young audience volunteer (children just have

the most amazing reactions during a Lim performance!), some playing cards and one card picked by said volunteer. Even if you’ve seen the “Is this your card?” trick before, prepare to be blown away by Lim’s version. Kids figure prominently in this show. Cloud has a great bit in which he has various young volunteers shout out random words, which figure prominently later in the bit. Yes, we all know kids can say the darnedest things, but when you hear them live—and see Cloud’s unscripted reactions—it’s almost worth the price of admission alone. By now, most Lim fans are aware of his “greatest hits,” the illusions that won him AGT and the Champions edition. And yes, Lim does perform those, although in a slightly different way than you might expect. Without giving anything away, let’s just say you want to be watching the man himself as well as the cards he so skillfully manipulates. Because in Lim’s world, nothing is as it seems.

Jason Isbell draws on rich experiences

It’s been a decade since Jason Isbell’s heart has been on the run, keeping his hand on a gun while not trusting anyone. That’s how, in the first few lines of his signature song, “Cover Me Up,” he depicted his life before embracing

32

sobriety and the promise of a successful solo career. Leaving drinking and carousing behind made a successful marriage possible, enabling the stability that gave Isbell the impetus to stay self-aware and remain immersed in the

creative zone for sustained lengths of time, unobstructed by excess. Today, he is widely regarded as an accomplished singer-songwriter rather than a casualty, and he’ll perform at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on March 6.

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas axs.com

Isbell’s Alabama-bred humility might prevent him from seeing himself as part of a legacy that includes Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young, although he’d likely agree he’s spiritually akin to the ensemble sounds

of The Band, Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers and The Black Crowes. “Cover Me Up,” a chordal descendant of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” and just as evocative, is as close to perfection as a composition can be, and Isbell’s 2015 album

Southeastern is a critically acclaimed masterpiece of Americana’s country and rock realms. Southeastern might never have happened had Isbell continued down the self-destructive path that got him ejected from Drive-By Truckers. Born into a musical extended family, Isbell grew up playing stringed instruments and discovered blues progenitor Robert Johnson at an early age. “This was the ’80s in Alabama, so it wasn’t like the music was popular anymore,” Isbell told producer Rick Rubin in a May 2020 interview on podcast Broken Record. Garth Brooks was an early influence both musically and as a performer, as well as whoever was on the radio circa 1991-’92. “I loved Prince and Crowded House, and ’Til Tuesday. All these really great pop songs,” he told Rubin. “So, there was this strange combination of that, and then the arena rock and Southern rock that my dad was listening to. Dad was into ZZ Top and Skynyrd, and all these big rock bands.” Isbell became a devotee of guitar playing, developing an expressive slide technique often heard on recordings. He came to prominence after he joined Drive-By Truckers in 2001 as the Athens, Ga.-based band rode a wave of acclaim and popularity. The pleasures of the road became a preoccupation, and it would be several years before his relationship with singer/fiddle player Amanda Shires set the stage for a clear-thinking Isbell to emerge and his songwriting ability to thrive. He’s now a four-time Grammy winner, earning two with his band The 400 Unit for 2018 album The Nashville Sound and song “If We Were Vampires.” Current career-spanning live sets include Drive-By Truckers favorites as well as material from 2020 album The Reunion and 2021’s Georgia Blue, a collection of covers originated by Peach State artists. The 400 Unit reinvigorate songs by Drivin’ ‘N’ Cryin, Cat Power and R.E.M. while closing concerts with a Neil Young song ingrained into his soul as a boy, witnessing his father’s band perform “Like a Hurricane.”

NONSENSE REIGNS SUPREME during a performance of Piff the Magic Dragon. There’s no rhyme or reason to any of the proceedings; the point is to just have fun and laugh as much as possible. Whether it’s a bit of shrubbery producing strange fruit, a fortune cookie that reveals all the intimate details of an audience member’s marriage, or a volunteer producing a card from an unexpected part of their body, this is a show to make you just shrug your shoulders and get lost in the rambling, ridiculous and riotous world it creates. Piff himself is actually an accomplished magician, garnering the respect of such heavyweights as Penn Jillette (who appears, hilariously, in a fake movie preview that introduces the show). But he never draws your attention to it; rather, he’s content to keep you continually off-balance

microphone (often in large groups!). Those called onstage truly get their 15 minutes of fame—for better or worse. The silly antics that pepper this production are almost too numerous to list, including: A bit of fun with an audience member’s Apple Watch, involving five socks, a fired-up Jade Simone and the appearance of Mr. Piffles, Piff’s cuter-than-anything dog; A gumball machine off to the side, for which audience volunteers are gifted quarters to receive Piff-themed merchandise (but not always!); An audience member’s $100 bill, which goes through a series of torture tests throughout the show. Of course it will eventually reappear, but you won’t be able to guess when (or where); The transformation of an audience volunteer into “Jimmy,” a poor orphaned boy who

By Ken Miller

Piff the Magic Dragon conjures a silly world of illusion with his mix of audience participation and non sequiturs, most of them courtesy of his “squire,” who operates one of the cameras (when he’s not bringing Piff dispatches from the audience and prancing around), and Jade Simone, Piff’s real-life wife, who’s constantly in motion—and occasionally very expressive! The process of finding volunteers is a big part of the show’s entertainment value—Piff grabs a large flashlight and points it into the audience, often singling out individuals whom he continues to harass throughout the show (all in good fun, of course!). He goes out into the audience by way of an extended stage, at the end of which he’s positioned a microphone. Once potential volunteers are identified, they come over and speak into the

helps Piff in producing cards seemingly at random (and from, uh, random places). In perhaps the show’s most delightful bit, Piff becomes a magical therapist, helping a couple “fix” their relationship, complete with literal olive branches (with rubber gloves on the ends), the aforementioned piece of shrubbery, Mr. Piffles and some music by Enya. It’s hard to imagine anyone watching this unfold and keep a straight face. Even Piff occasionally lets loose with a laugh over how outrageous this all is. But Piff can’t let the show end without demonstrating some serious magic skills. He may call himself “The Loser of America’s Got Talent,” but as a Strip performer, Piff is a winner in every department.

Neither the winner or runner-up of HBO Max reality series Finding Magic Mike was named Mike, but Johnny Dutch and Nate Bryan found the magic within themselves to finish first and second, respectively. Although their reasons for competing to obtain a four-month gig as dancers with Magic Mike Live at Sahara Las Vegas were personal and specific, they both found themselves immersed in hero’s journeys in which the experiences superseded expectations and led to unexpected self-discoveries. Dutch and Bryan were not professional dancers prior to the series and weren’t even the most

prominently featured competitors in the premiere, which whittled 25 contestants down to 10. Former Olympic track-team aspirant Dutch did provide the episode’s dramatic high point when he became momentarily overwhelmed by emotion during an interview. “Anything I did, I can say I was proud of, and I tried my best,” says Dutch. “I really enjoyed my experience. The auditioning process was grueling just because there were so many guys and you had to retain all this choreo(graphy) within so many hours, and then you had to do it in front of the creative team. It was overwhelming at times, but overall, it was very positive.” Bryan, who debuted in the Sahara Las Vegas show along with Dutch on Jan. 27, found performing live more comfortable than living the unscripted reality life. “On the TV show, I guess it was a little more nerve-wracking because there were cameras taping for millions of people across America,” says the former minor league baseball player. “I’ve gotten messages from Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia. It’s crazy to think there was such a big outreach, but in the live show, it’s a different beast. I’m not there for competition. It’s my actual work.” Still, Bryan’s nervousness during his professional debut wasn’t far removed from the first leg-shaking time he stood in a minor league batter’s box. “I was like, ‘I don’t even know if I could swing the bat right now.’ So much adrenaline. It was kind of the same thing with this.” He says he found his groove on his fourth

night of performing. Bryan currently continues to get butterflies in his stomach when he hears the audience screaming as he prepares to go onstage, but he’s also in a new relationship with someone he could have only met through Finding Magic Mike. For Dutch, the nerve-wracking part was explaining Finding Magic Mike to his family. He says he relates to one of the main characters in Magic Mike the movie, who came from a conservative background. “They’ve come to be very supportive of the whole process,” says Dutch, who found it

difficult to find direction after retiring from track and field. “Being an athlete, I’m very competitive. That was the first thing on my mind: ‘This is a competition, and I have to win it, right?’ … Once I was there, I found it very welcoming and very positive. It was just a great space to be myself and try something new, to not be so scared and shy … to really be myself and not be apologetic about it.” Sahara Las Vegas ticketmaster.com

Oh yeah, I have this moment with the audience, so they know this is not just the TV show, and they feel engaged and recognize it’s live. And there’s lots of interaction. I do always have to pick on somebody a little bit or say something, so they know it’s going to be a special night. How have these last few months in Las Vegas impacted or influenced your comedy and your performance style? It’s definitely inspired me and made me want to be more open when I’m onstage. A lot of people say this is the greatest show they’ve ever seen in their lives. It can make people laugh, cry, your heart is going to drop or stop for a second, there’s every emotion in this show, and so much excitement. It’s definitely made me want to upgrade what I’m doing when I go back (on the road) and made me want to be more loose onstage. Have you been able to squeeze in some stand-up dates during this opening run of the show? I’ll definitely go back on the road (this spring) but I’m also on the road now. Whenever I can squeeze it in, every Monday and Tuesday I’m gone. And I feel like I’ve gotta get out there again (because) I have to drop this new material. Is your new comedy material taking any different directions? I definitely always want to explore new styles, but it’s still my style. I’ll be doing this for 13 years in March, and I feel like I’ve honed it, grown and evolved. If you watched my first time on AGT and then my special from three years ago, I’m just different, a little more calm. When I first got on AGT, I was yelling, all over the place, and then I went on the road to headline for the first time in my life and every weekend, I’d lose my voice. So, I had to figure that out, that I don’t need to expend the same amount of energy, that I can save myself. I feel evolved as a comedian, but I’m still me, and I definitely want to keep testing the waters.

Linq magician Mat Franco spans the generations

By Ken Miller Photograph by Christopher DeVargas

Illusionist Mat Franco is the perfect balance of young enough and old enough: Old enough that his “training” as a magician involved not YouTube or TikTok videos, but actual videotapes of legendary magicians of the ’90s, folks like David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and Lance Burton, whom Franco would watch over and over, rewinding and playing everything back in slow motion. (If you don’t know what a videotape is, ask your grandfather.) Young enough that he’s taken advantage of social media, using the pandemic downtime to post videos on Instagram showing his talents as an illusionist to full effect. Old enough that in his hit show at The Linq to pay tribute to groundbreaking magicians of generations past, including a version of Bill Malone’s classic “Sam the Bellhop” card trick, which Franco has customized in his own, unique version. Young enough that he appeals to all ages, including the kids who flock to his performances with their parents. One of his show’s most memorable moments is to when he has a youngster join him onstage for the grand finale involving numerous decks of cards, a card cannon, and a red button. (If you find it hard not to press a big red button, imagine how hard it is to resist for a 10-year-old!) Old enough to have mastered one of the hardest sleightof-hand tricks to pull off: Making cards appear as if from thin air, and not just one or two cards, but entire decks. Franco is careful to thank the magician he originally saw perform this trick, along with a great story of how he and his grandmother came up with an imaginative way of pulling it off. Young enough to know that, as accomplished as he has become in his six years at The Linq Hotel, he’s just getting started. The pandemic shutdown gave him time to reassess his show, and he ended up adding several new illusions to the proceedings, one featuring a poker table, four volunteers and a whole lot of cards, another featuring a helium-filled balloon and a contraption that seems to “drain” its ability to float. Perhaps the aspect of Franco’s show that ties it together so perfectly for fans young and old is his playfulness—Franco can be an absolute scamp at times, messing with audience members who remain oblivious because of Franco’s mastery of misdirection. Kids laugh with glee at these antics, while parents silently say, “Thank god that’s not me up there!” By far, the most engaging bits are those that involve the audience, and Franco knows this; he takes great care to take note of everything revealed during a show (ages, anniversaries, birthdays, cities volunteers are from, etc.). Why? Because he uses it all at the end of the show in a signature illusion that gives his show its name: Magic Reinvented Nightly.
