Properly Funny Carrot Top, aka Scott Thompson, has a lot to be happy about right now: 1.) He is in his 17th year as a Luxor headliner; 2.) He has ardent supporters in the comedy community, including Brad Garrett; 3.) The prop comic’s show continues to evolve, including the introduction of several new props at a recent performance. (Like a new device that could prevent motorists from driving at high rates of speed—so twisted, but so right!) And it’s not just prop comedy that will have you entertained. Top also has plenty of observational comedy at the ready, including dissections of how popular music can be extremely absurd. But it’s all done lovingly—he’s a huge music fan, which he demonstrates at the end with a high-energy dance routine to a variety of genres. –Ken Miller

Shark Reef Aquarium is an attraction unlike any other in Las Vegas. It’s a self-contained habitat containing creatures that are as far away from their natural environment as you can get. First there are jungle habitats, aquatic environments, touchable stingrays and a shipwreck to explore. Meet a submerged Johnston’s crocodile in the ancient sunken temple and learn how they hunt and hold prey with their 70 dagger-like teeth. Get winked at by a large Komodo dragon without being consumed in entirety by the voracious reptile. Encounter a Burmese python with a seize-and-squeeze mentality and witness piranha from a safe distance. Exotic underwater life in the tanks such as zebra sharks swim in harmony with beak-bearing parrotfish and teeth-grinding French grunts. Queen triggerfish crowned with protective dorsal spines reside in reefs with fierce-fighting sergeant majors and French angelfish. The shark tube leading to the touch pool o ers a dynamic and dramatic visual experience. Hammerheads swim up and over the glass enclosures, enabling views of every angle of the graceful fish’s anatomy. The “kings of sting,” as mounted wall placards dub them, rule the pool where a very gentle one-finger touch is allowed. These rays have their stingers trimmed, so it is not necessary to learn the pain-alleviating “stingray shu e” before an encounter. It’s possible to lose track of time while zoning out on the cylindrical sea jellies tank. Nearby, lionfish get a brightly lit habitat fit for spectacular royal scale patterns. Starfish of all sizes room with a giant Pacific octopus skilled at hiding in plainThesight.grand finale is the viewing area designed to resemble a shipwreck with windows providing views out to the “ocean” floor. Several species of sharks swim about, with bowmouth guitarfish and sawtooth sharks having the fanciest faces. Visitors can sign up to feed Shark Reef’s zebra sharks alongside animal care sta (You must be at least 13 years old and accompanied by a paying adult). –Matt Kelemen Mandalay 702.632.4555Bay,

He’s one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but Dwayne Johnson is famous for so much more than that—his wrestling career as The Rock, his work on television shows like HBO’s Ballers, and his entrepreneurial work have all combined to help make him a global brand. And among his more famous business ventures include Teremana tequila and Voss Water.

Some things never change. In Las Vegas, the topless adults-only revue has enjoyed a long, rich history, one that lives on in shows like Fantasy, a tremendously enduring pro duction that recently celebrated its 20th anniversary on the Las Vegas Strip. The elements that make this show a hit are all still in place: Cute-as-a-button emcee Lorena Peril, whose sexiness is matched only by her amazing voice (not to mention audience banter, guaranteed to help lower your inhibitions), a cast of gorgeous, athletic women performing a variety of dance styles to hits of today and yesteryear, and comic relief courtesy of a rotation of Murray the Magician and Shayma Tash.
It’s one thing to see a master’s immortal works in a museum. It’s another thing entirely to see them as they are displayed in The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Las Vegas, where some of the most famous works of art are shown in a way you’ve never seen before. You enter a large, rectangular room, and as the lights dim, Van Gogh’s works like The Starry Night, Wheatfield with Crows and The Yellow House are projected on every inch of space on the walls, as plaintive music takes you on a tour of the artist’s journey. It’s fascinating, it’s cutting-edge, it’s emotional.
To celebrate Johnson’s achievements in the business world, Madame Tussauds Las Vegas has installed a Johnson wax figure, one that represents both his tequila and his water.

Kid ‘N Play photo by Gerard Burkhart, Ceelo Green photo by Alysse Gafkjen C’mon, admit it: You’ve got a station on Pandora for the music of the ’80s. And the ’90s. Heck, probably even the aughts. As much as today’s musical artists of today are packing stadiums and arenas across the country, there’s just something about the music of those decades that…Andresonates.thatmusic will fill Westgate Las Vegas for the next few weeks with the arrival of BOOMBOX!—A Vegas Residency on Shu e, featuring some of the artists who helped define those decades. It’s like you’re listening to Pandora, only the artists making those beautiful, nostalgic sounds are directly in front of you! Artists like Ceelo Green, Kid ‘N Play, J.J. Fad, and more. Green’s massive appeal stems from both his work with Gnarls Barkley, which produced hits like “Crazy” in 2006, to his solo work, which culminated in “Forget You,” a hit that garnered five GRAMMY nominations. Green is no stranger to Las Vegas—he performed at Planet Hollywood during his Loberace residency in 2012. His over-the-top style is ideally suited for Vegas, and there’s no doubt he’ll have fans dancing. It was nearly impossible to miss Tone LoC at the height of his popularity. In addition to his chart-topping hit “Wild Thing” in 1989, the award-winning artist also hit the silver screen in movies like Ace Venture: Pet Detective, Heat, Poetic Justice and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane He’s shared the stage with everyone from Boyz II Men to Britney Spears. Who doesn’t have a soft spot in their heart for the movie House Party and its central duo, Kid ‘N Play? The pure, unadulterated joy Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin generated together has had crowds dancing for years, and songs like “Rollin’ with Kid ‘N Play” and “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody” are classics of their type. We haven’t even mentioned the look—the hightop fade haircut on Reid and the low top fade on Martin were major trend-setters from the late’80s to the early ’90s. –Ken Miller Westgate Las Vegas, Aug. 31-Sept. 4 and Sept. 28-Oct. 2, ticketmaster.com From the Past Residency ‘shu es’ the sounds of favorite decades

Even if you have been to other Cirque du Soleil shows, you’ll find that the newest show in its stable is a different kind of animal. Mad Apple merges comedy, acrobatics, singing and dancing with Cirque’s penchant for over-the-top costumes, creating a dynamic, engaging show. As you’re filtering into the theater, you’ll have a chance to grab a drink, but you may want to wait until you’re inside, since the preshow involves an actual bar on the stage and magicians circulating through the crowd.
Some numbers feature the full member cast, while others celebrate New York musically—music director Xharlie Black, five vocalists and a five-piece band present incredible mashups of Big Apple-themed songs. There’s plenty of clowning around, but stand-ups like Brad Williams and Harrison Greenbaum re-create a comedy club vibe. The acrobatics will amaze you, from two-man balancing acts that quickly morph in a flipping frenzy, to trampoline experts that make amazing roundball shots while sailing through the air. And that’s just a portion of the eclectic mix; Mad Apple might be even more entertaining than a night in the Big Apple itself.
Airborne Escape When you walk through the floor-to-ceiling doors of Alle Lounge on 66 your jaw will drop. The cocktail menu at Alle delivers handcrafted mixology, with the specialty cocktails combining delicious ingredients. Rare spirits are available, as well as light bites like oysters, lobster rolls and wagyu sliders.
Don’t be fooled by the name—although Iceland has its share of ice, it also has waterfalls, cliffs, volcanoes and fields of flowers. In FlyOver Las Vegas’ new flight ride film, Legendary Iceland, you soar over all of them, and it’s incredibly moving. Before the main film, a special preshow film in a special antechamber introduces you to Iceland’s history (and the main character is indeed memorable). When it is over, head into FlyOver’s theater, where you’re belted into seats that face a nearly 53-foot spherical screen. But you quickly realize the theme here: Look closer. As you scan the various cans, boxes, packages and bags, you see that things are not quite what they seem—and that the humorous, askew personality of Meow Wolf is absolutely everywhere. For Omega Mart is ready to bend your mind—in a good way
Other than the part about being unhappy, these song lyrics by The Clash could have been written specifically about one of the newest, most exciting venues to open in Las Vegas for some time: Omega Mart by Meow Wolf, an otherworldly experience with personality to spare. At first glance, it appears to be just a grocery store like any other, with brightly lit shelves popping with colorful products to stoke your impulse to buy, buy, buy.
“I’m all lost in the supermarket/ I can no longer shop happily/ I came here for that special offer/ A guaranteed personality.”

This entire area is very nonlinear; you can walk anywhere you want at any time. There are hallways with seemingly endless pathways, staircases, hidden rope climbs, hidden doors, interactive displays and so much more. Along the way, marketing analysts ask you questions that make no sense (at least on the surface). But you’ll answer them anyway, because when in Rome … And if you’re planning on visiting Meow Wolf’s other installations (there’s one in Santa Fe, NM, and another in Denver, CO), you’ll find that the Omega Mart story is only the beginning. instance, the can that you think contains peaches actually says “Canned Beaches,” with the word “Unexpectables” below it. They’re “Ramen Notes” for when you want to leave a sticky note behind for a friend. That bottle of “Tomato Milk”? It’s actually a phone charger. Using his own recipe, the espresso martini is a mix of Stoli Vanil vodka, Kahlúa and a double shot of fresh-brewed Illy espresso. Yung even comments that once guests have tried it, they came back the very next day and the next day—even bringing their friends along—to order the cocktail again. The watermelon salad, with feta, avocado, onion and mint in a citrus vinaigrette, makes such a refreshing bite to cut the richness of your appetizer, but the Harvest salad may be more to your liking, with mixed greens, squash, pear, goat cheese and toasted pecans. For entrées, there are plenty of options, from a French dip that will elicit jealous looks from other tables (seriously) to cheeseburgers, Im possible burgers and New England lobster rolls. If you order pizza, you can try to catch a glimpse of it in the pizza oven, where a number of sides are cooked, also. In addition to the usual, delicious suspects, short rib pizza with Calabrian chile, meatball and mushroom pizza
If you’re looking to get off the Strip for dinner, head out to Red Rock Resort, where you’ll find one of Las Vegas’ favorite locals restaurants.
The cocktails are also pleasant, pleasant, pleasant, ranging from classics like Sidecars with Remy Martin and Aperol spritzes to fun lychee martinis and mojitos (created with Casamigos reposado, strawberries, lime and mint). You can find a good range of beer, from classic domestics to Elysian Space Dust (on draft). And the wine selection is a really good size (hence the “cellar” in the name).

Many of the dishes on this American menu are suitable for sharing, including the flaming crab dip. This impressive appetizer comes conveyed to your table on a chunky cutting board, in a silver serving vessel that looks like a crab. Flaming cognac is poured over the dish for an exciting presentation—dip into it with garlic naan and you’ll find plenty of crab inside. Fresh oysters are shucked at a pleasant little bar off the kitchen—order as many as you like.
Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar is tucked off the casino floor and sports a beautiful dining room flanked by booths and the kitchen and bar. It’s really welcoming, too, with seating along the kitchen counter and tables throughout, creating a sort of farmhouse vibe. A patio is cooled by misters, making an outdoor experience quite pleasant. There are plenty of TVs here, making this a great place to stop to watch a game, too.
And although dessert is sometimes skipped, please don’t skip the lemon icebox pie—it’s that good, and that pretty, with a toasted meringue top accented with a fresh flower.
with truffle, fromage blanc, gouda and chives offer good variety. Braised short rib comes with butternut squash and truffle ricotta; and if you love that truffle flavor, go for the truffle penne pasta with peas, prosciutto and truffle cream. The fragrance of the pasta makes for an almost transporting experience; and this pasta is well balanced, so that intense flavor never over whelms the rest of your dishes. If you want steaks or fish, there are several options, such as striped bass and prime rib. For the complete sharing experience, order the Whole Beast Feast, where a carved suckling pig is served with country bread, apple-quinoa salad and roasted apple butter.

The sides here are darned good—the creamed “street corn” is like elote in a bowl, with pepper, whipped corn crema, cotija cheese and Tajin spice. Nice! Mac and cheese is velvety, with roasted garlic cream and four cheeses.
Fried chicken is a classic dish of the South. It’s a fast-food phenomenon. It’s a hearty, homey meal everyone craves. It’s all those things and more, and dashing around the diverse restaurant scene in Las Vegas, it’s clear there are many different and dynamic ways to enjoy it. Nellie’s Southern Kitchen (702.640.0156) at MGM Grand is the latest Las Vegas Strip arrival to make fried chicken a cornerstone of its delicious offerings, and it’s a celebrity restaurant to boot—Nellie’s comes from the family of pop stars the Jonas Brothers. It’s named after their great-grandmother, who used to cook for her family in the small town of Belmont, N.C., and poultry was a specialty. Thanks to recent fast-food trends and COVID-era crazes, plenty of people hear the term “fried chicken” and immediately hit their favorite drive-thru window for a crispy, indulgent sandwich. Las Vegas has all those well-known franchises to choose from, but it also has local spots that often exceed chicken sandwich expectations, including the friendly neighborhood restaurant known as Honey Salt (702.445.6100).

No matter how you like it, you’ll feel you were invited to the family home for a memorable meal after enjoying this unique experience. Many Vegas regulars consider Yardbird Southern Table & Bar (702.297.6541) at The Venetian to be the standard-bearer when it comes to fried chicken on the Strip, and it’ll only take one bite to find out why. Nominated for a James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant when it first arrived on the scene in Miami in 2011, Yardbird has expanded its presence across the country, and the Vegas version is as popular as it gets, with people from all over visiting this warm and welcoming dining room to feast on crunchy, juicy fried chicken with honey hot sauce on the side. Order “the whole bird” and you’ll get enough to share with the table, plus chilled spiced watermelon, Vermont cheddar cheese wa es and bourbon-laced maple syrup.
One of the most eagerly anticipated new restaurants of the year in Las Vegas is without a doubt chicken-centric. From the team behind the acclaimed Sparrow + Wolf comes Half Bird Chicken & Beer (702.476.4642), recently opened in Chinatown, and while this kitchen focuses on rotisserie bird, there are fried chicken sandwiches and nuggets to pass around the table when you try it for the first time. PASSAGE TO awaitWonderfulTHEthingsatDiscovering King Tut’s Tomb By Matt Kelemen
Luckily for Vegas visitors, it’s a lot easier to get to King Tut’s Tomb than it was for Carter to get to Tutankhamen’s fi nal resting place. Ascending stairs to the Luxor’s mezzanine level leads to the wonderful things Imagine Exhibitions has in store for contemporary budding Egyptologists.
“If you want to see the original King Tut artifacts, the only way you can see them is in Egypt when they open the new Grand Egyptian Museum,” says Zaller.
Luxor ,kingtutvegas.com
Courtesy photo Nearly 100 years ago, archeologist Howard Carter descended stairs that had been hidden beneath sand in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings and drilled a hole through a door that led to the tomb of Tutankhamen, a pharaoh who ruled from Thebes during the New Kingdom era (15701069 BC). Legend has it that he exclaimed he saw “wonderful things” upon peering inside the undisturbed tomb, many of which are represented at the Luxor’s newest attraction, Discovering King Tut’s Tomb.
LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE 8.28.22 31
Tutankhamen’s gold funeral mask has become a symbol of Egypt and Egyptology for the masses, with the treasures of the tomb becoming a source of nationalistic pride. The actual tomb is nearly empty, although its contents remain in their motherland.
“The King Tut story is a great story. People like it,” says Zaller. And there really couldn’t be a more appropriate place for it than the only pyramid-shaped property on the Strip, named for the city known as Thebes in Tutankhamen’s day. “I don’t think you should be anyplace but the Luxor if you’re going to have a King Tut exhibit, right?”
Although Tutankhamen was a relatively minor pharaoh and died young, his tomb was fi lled with artifacts that Carter found before thieves could loot them as they had other tombs. Tutankhamen was provided with every luxury item he needed to be comfortable in the afterlife, and items such as jeweled scarabs that had symbolic meaning. The pharaoh himself was part of the fi nd, enclosed in a shroud in a co n within a sarcophagus like a nesting doll.
“I wanted to put a King Tut exhibit in the Luxor as long as I can remember,” says Tom Zaller, president and CEO of Imagine Exhibitions. Imagine already has three presences at Bally’s, REAL BODIES at Bally’s, Rarely Seen and recently opened craft cocktail bar The Cabinet of Curiosities (with hidden speakeasy The Lock inside). “It’s serendipitous that this year is King Tut’s anniversary,Cartertoo.” stumbled across the tomb in November 1922.
And there’s no need to worry about the legendary curse affl icting anyone who violates the sacred space of Tutankhamen. Or is there? ...
Discovering King Tut’s Tomb is the closest one can get to reliving Carter’s experience, starting with a passageway to a burial chamber. Animations explain the mummification process and its significance to society in ancient Egypt. More than 300 replicas of artifacts, galleries that relate the legacy of Carter’s discovery and modern archeological practices, and virtual reality pods that take guests on extended explorations of King Tut’s tomb are part of the journey, with storytelling and educational information related along the way.
Photo by Jerry Metellus Musician Michael Shapiro and Reckless in Vegas deliver the goods By Brock Radke
Michael Shapiro is a well-traveled musician who has toured the country, opened for acts like Cheap Trick and The Romantics, and produced and recorded his own album. He’s done it all, but for the past seven years he has returned to Las Vegas, the town where he grew up, to take over assorted lounges and showrooms with Reckless In Vegas, a hard-edged take on a power trio. This summer, the band landed a residency at the renovated Sahara Theater in a resort that similarly combines modern twists with classic Vegas style. Now, along with bandmates Jack E. Roth and Chris Nichols and their extended cast of dancers, singers and performers, Shapiro is delivering a unique night of entertainment you can only find at this iconic Strip destination. We’ve done plenty of shows (around town) and we started to build a pretty good following. We realized there’s just a lot of people in town that have come to our shows, and we just want to give back to them. Some locals are reluctant to come to the Strip because of high prices and parking fees and overpriced cocktails, and because it’s just hard to get in and out of casinos.
Our whole mission is to keep vintage Vegas alive and present it with a modern approach. We want to pay homage but make it more accessible to people who maybe want to have more edge to it. The Sahara recognizes that and who knows, maybe this can be the catalyst to show this type of show does have value. But I’m doing what I love, and my cast is having a ball. The idea that we’re onstage playing music to someone who bought a ticket and some of the money is going to a local charity, it doesn’t get better than that.
The Sahara is a really unique, beautiful boutique property, it’s moderately priced, and it’s an easy in and out. We changed a couple of things, but the integrity of the show hasn’t changed. We take a lot of time to be very careful with our arrangements, our interpretations of classic songs. There are a lot of traditionalists out there that don’t want you to mess with Sinatra, so we have to be very careful. We changed the opening and ending into these three-song medleys, so it really moves and keeps people captivated. We hired a great choreographer and brought in some dancers for a few numbers, and there’s more costumes, more set design, and more production than ever before.

The “Mack the Knife” crooner passed “Danke Schoen” to his protégé, giving Newton his signature song and his first hit in 1963 at age 21. That November, he was booked at the Flamingo for his first headlining gig.
AN EVENING WITH A Stories accent Wayne Newton’s latest Vegas
hen Wayne Newton’s close friend Elvis Presley played his last show at the Las Vegas Hilton (now Westgate) in 1976, he wrote the message “kind of to God and himself,” according to Newton, on a notepad by his bed. When Newton heard what the note said he obtained it, and eventually co-wrote a song to address the many requests for copies of the contents. That song, “The Letter,” became a No. 1 country hit, with the circumstances behind it becoming the kind of Vegas story that Newton tells so well at his residency, Wayne: Up Close and Personal. No living entertainer embod ies the history and spirit of Vegas more than Newton. He earned the sobriquet “Mr. Las Vegas” the hard way, starting out by performing six shows a night six days a week with older brother Jerry at downtown’s Fremont Hotel. He knew he was destined to entertain by age 4, when his parents took him to a Grand Ole Opry touring show and he saw the effect Hank Williams had on the crowd. He proceeded to familiarize himself with guitar, piano and steel guitar before he began singing at a daily radio show. By 16, he was in Vegas, where Bobby Darin took the tall, baby-faced singer under his wing and groomed him for future success.
Other entertainers helped raise Newton’s profile in main showrooms and on television, including Jack Benny and Jackie Gleason. He was embraced by mainstream America for his outgoing showmanship, clear voice and musicianship. He had learned to play multiple instruments in his early days to preserve his vocals during six-show dates, and he had evolved into an all-around performer. The same year of Presley’s ’68 Comeback Special, Newton hosted a prime-time program that featured many of the entertainment figures that had supported him on the way up. It was in the ’70s that he became Mr. Las Vegas. He dropped 60 pounds, grew a moustache and sideburns, and began singing an octave lower than fans heard on his 1972 song “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast.” After Presley passed, there was no one who rivaled his popularity on The Strip, and he continues to pay homage to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with Elvis covers to this day.

Newton lives to perform live. The intimate layout of Bugsy’s Cabaret not only brings him full-circle back to the Flamingo but allows him to emphasize storytelling in a personal way and easily field questions from the audience during ask-Wayne-anything segments. His up-tempo versions of “See See Rider” and “Viva Las Vegas” are delivered with the help of a live band and he is as adept a musician as ever. Mr. Las Vegas can’t stop, won’t stop.

The bagel is king here, and you’ll find it all over the menu, in the place of the ubiquitous toast, and the recipe for those bagels was painstakingly developed from the original restaurant’s signature item. And with windows looking over the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, the location is hard to beat. One of the most striking cafés in Vegas, The Kitchen (Resorts World, 702.676.6963), looks like a high-end restaurant, with a nod to midcentury modern design. For sheer number of choices, pop into the Grand Lux Café (The Venetian, 702.414.3888, and The Palazzo, 702.733.7411), a sister chain of The Cheesecake Factory. The menu is the same at both locations, and I’m partial to The Palazzo location. It’s hard to go wrong with anything you order, but the Asian chicken nachos are phenomenal (I love them without chicken), and the Specials Card has great limited-time options. EVEN BEGINS, something wonderful happens: An an nouncer invites you to participate in the kids’ singalong “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” Sure, there’s bound to be plenty of eye-rolling at this request (maybe by you yourself), but once that jaunty music starts playing, you just cannot help yourself—you’re clapping your hands, stomp ing your feet and shouting “Hurray!” along with everyone else. The best part? It instantly puts you in a better mood. The cares of the world fade away, and suddenly you’re a kid again, smiling and excited for what’s to come. That feeling continues unabated throughout King’s set. The Kentucky-born-and-raised magician instantly connects with his audiences through down-home humor and a self-effacing nature—no one is quicker to acknowledge that a joke didn’t work than King, which in itself is pretty hilarious.
