One of the best things about working for Las Vegas Magazine is the access our sta has to some of the most famous people on the planet. After all, this is the Entertainment Capital of the World; sooner or later, everyone comes here to perform. And since our publication is the premier source of entertainment information for the hundreds of thousands of tourists who come here every week, you can bet that those famous people will be liberally featured.
Which brings me to this week’s issue. In the DJ world, they don’t get much more high-profi le than Steve Aoki, whose iconic sounds (and hair!) have been packing nightclub floors in Las Vegas for years. He’s got several performances coming up at Omnia nightclub at Caesars Palace—including New Year’s Eve—and the Las Vegas Magazine team was able to get some time with him, both for a terrific interview by Kiko Miyasato and photo shoot by our incredible art team of Wesley Gatbonton, Christina Trimidal and Christopher DeVargas (“Life of the Party,” p. 32). You’ll be struck by his drive, his generous nature, and his close relationship to his family.
The famous people parade continues in this issue with Andrea Bocelli, performing with his son and daughter at MGM Grand Garden Arena (“Keeping It All in the Family,” p. 12), and Luke Bryan’s return to his residency at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Another Round,” p. 14).
Hip-hop royalty Missy Elliott also makes an appearance—sort of—with her new wax likeness at Madame Tussauds at The Venetian (“Fly Figure,” p. 16 ), while famous historical figure King Tut’s exhibit hits Luxor (“Deep Dive Like an Egyptian,” p. 18).
No matter who you follow, admire or mimic on TikTok, you’ll fi nd them here—eventually.
Singing has always been a spiritual affair for Andrea Bocelli. This holiday season, it’s a family affair as well as Bocelli embarks on a tour with his 25-year-old son Matteo and 10-year-old daughter Virginia. Both are featured on Bocelli’s latest album, A Family Christmas, and will appear at MGM Grand Arena to accompany their father on songs from that recording as well as duets Bocelli made famous with prominent chart-topping vocalists.
It’s likely that Matteo will handle the Ed Sheeran end of “Perfect Symphony,” the 2017 hit that is currently Andrea Bocelli’s top streaming pop song. The Italian tenor played classical guitar as Virginia covered Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at the White House this past Christmas and will likely do the same if “Away in a Manger” is on the holiday concert setlist.
Father and daughter sing together on “Over the Rainbow” from A Family Christmas, and the three Bocellis join voices for “Feliz Navidad.” The first single from the album, “The Greatest Gift,” is another sure bet to hear live, but there are some nonholiday songs that Bocelli will deliver to fans with pleasure.
“Time to Say Goodbye (Con Te Partirò),” the song that introduced Bocelli to millions of listeners, is rarely left out of a performance, and “Fall on Me,” the song that introduced Matteo to the world in 2018 via the end credits of 2018 Disney film The Nutcracker and The Four Realms, has special significance that assures it a place in a Bocelli family concert.
Bocelli, who last appeared in Vegas at MGM Grand in February for his In Concert For Valentine’s Tour, describes Matteo’s voice as technically different from his own but similar in attitude. Virginia has the voice of an angel. The passion Bocelli’s children will draw out of him with their presence promises an unforgettable experience for the Bocelli faithful. –Matt Kelemen

Luke Bryan knows rain makes corn, and corn makes whiskey. He believes most people are good. He’s one of the most award-winning country artists of all time and the most beloved music awards host of the modern era. With the release of his first single, “Country On,” from his upcoming eighth studio album and the success of his Resorts World Las Vegas residency, Bryan is poised to lead the way for the next Era of Good Feeling that the republic will experience as it heads towards its 250th anniversary in 2026.
Bryan scored near-universal social media kudos for pulling duty with Peyton Manning as a co-host of the 56th annual CMA Awards in Nashville. His performance of “Country On,” a celebration of working-class folks, was a highlight of the Nov. 9 ceremony. “Hey barkeep, how ’bout another round/Keep the neon lit in the crazy town” may well address the team serving up libations at Resorts World Theatre.
“Country On,” with its anthemic declaration, “I say hey hey USA/We ain’t seen our better days,” is the lead track to the upcoming album and was added to the last spate of dates of Luke Bryan Live in September. Bryan kicked off those Resorts World concerts with “That’s My Kind of Night” from 2013’s Crash My Party and closed with “I Don’t Want This Night to End” from 2011’s Tailgates & Tanlines, vocalizing the sentiment of fans in attendance.
The sprawling setlists covered nearly two dozen songs from Bryan’s catalog, from more recent tunes such as “One Margarita” and “Waves” to slice-of-life chestnuts like “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day” and “Rain Is a Good Thing” to party-bro ditties “Drunk on You” and “Drink a Beer.” Expect his latest salt-of-the-Earth single, “Prayin’ in a Deer Stand,” to be performed at his next half-dozen dates. –Matt Kelemen

Missy Elliott found herself recently, thanks to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas. Elliott was not caught off-guard as she had already gone through the process of being captured in wax by Madame Tussauds, and she had creative control over her figure’s fashion and accessory aspects. The result makes it hard to tell the two apart without knowing what Elliott chose for her doppelgänger to wear.
It’s been a quarter-century since Elliott released her Supa Dupa Fly album, cementing her place in hip-hop history
after paying dues shaping other artists’ sounds. Elliott’s arrival at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas on the first Friday of November was a silver anniversary victory lap, where she encountered Wax Missy in situ for the first time.
A Supa Dupa fan helped Elliott hand-embellish the figure’s glossy tracksuit inspired by the outfit Elliott wore to the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. Elliott donated a pair of Versace kicks, but it took 20 artists working in a London studio six months to design and construct the figure after
taking Elliott’s measurements and detailed photographs.
The results are astonishing, complete with tattoos and 10 feet of hair winding around and above Wax Missy. Prior to the reveal, Real Missy encouraged fans to work it, flip it and reverse it for an Instagram #CoolOffChallenge, for which Elliott personally chose submissions of the best dance moves for an interactive experience only featured in Las Vegas. –Matt Kelemen
One of the world’s greatest archaeological finds occurred 100 years ago this year, and you can learn all about it at a new exhibition: Discovering King Tut’s Tomb at (fittingly) Luxor.
This self-guided journey, presented by Imagine Exhibitions, takes guests to ancient Egypt and The Valley of the Kings where more than 60 tombs of kings and queens and, most importantly the famous King Tutankhamun (more commonly known as King Tut), were discovered by Howard Carter and his team in November of 1922.
The exhibition begins in the caves of the valley where the surrounding sounds of excavation can be heard, and the walls are covered in images of rock and hieroglyphics. As you step deeper and deeper into that world, you’ll come across replicas of ancient Egyptian artifacts that were uncovered from the earth—tons of gold and towering statues of Egyptian gods and everyday items like cookware and tableware used by the villagers.
Interesting points include videos and diagrams of the mummification and entombment process. You’ll also learn about King Tut’s life, a short life of only 19 years. Learn about how Tut might have died, from a possible infection from a broken leg caused by a chariot accident. Videos also reveal what Carter and his team discovered when they unearthed Tut’s body and performed autopsies showing the “boy king” suffered from a clubbed foot, cleft palate, curved spine and severe immune issues like malaria that were found in his bones.
Some of the most visually striking tableaus include the replica of the golden shrine covering King Tut’s sarcophagus and a re-creation of King Tut’s coffin—three nested golden coffins with the mummified form wrapped in royal regalia and the extraordinary replica of Tut’s death mask adorned in precious stones.

Topless Western-themed revue celebrates seven years with seven-dancer lineup
“X” Country, a top-shelf topless revue on the Strip dedicated to the music that drives American pride, celebrated its seventh anniversary on the Las Vegas Strip with an official introduction to the entertainment press of the updated seven dancer lineup. Joining now-senior cast member Melissa are Dannii, Savannah, Kayli, Nicole and Krista. Lauren, the latest dancer to join, had yet to make her stage debut but was on hand for the party on the second Thursday of November.
The energy radiating from the lithe, luscious ladies filled the room at Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux on Harrah’s second level, where the “X” Country crew met, mingled and received enthusiastic congratulations from well-wishers and friends on hand for the festivities. That energy made its way to Harrah’s Cabaret, where the night’s primary cast members took to the stage dressed as the ultimate eye-popping girls next door before freeing themselves of constricting clothing.
A new routine set to a medley of Carrie Underwood hits kicks off the current version of the show, for which the dancers raise the art of hair whipping to a new arousing level. A long-desired goal by the producers to have Shania Twain’s “Still the One” in the show has been realized, with choreography created for two dancers and a very lucky chair. For lovers of both country music and topless revues, “X” Country is the place to be. –Matt Kelemen

One of the best delicatessens in downtown Las Vegas just got a whole lot better. In addition to its enormous sandwiches (you’ll need two hands, as their slogan says), Saginaw ’s just introduced a whole bunch of new menu items, guaranteeing that there will be something for everyone here.
The space itself is meant to evoke an old deli in Detroit, complete with photos on the wall, tin ceilings, comfortable booths and tables and a classic deli counter (a large statue
of owner Paul Saginaw greets you at the door).
For some serious comfort food, get Rosie’s meatloaf, which combines Angus ground beef and ground pork with sautéed carrots, onions and celery, and is served with mashed potatoes with homemade gravy and fresh green beans. Another surefire hit is Bonnie’s grilled chicken, served with white rice and green beans.
If you’re looking for something a bit more Southern, try Vegas
Vickie’s gumbo ya ya, prepared with andouille sausage, chicken, okra, bell peppers and onions, or 1st Street fried chicken, marinated in buttermilk before it’s fried and served with potatoes and green beans.
For dessert, you’ll be more than satisfied by Stewart’s grilled cinnamon roll, topped with a scoop of butter pecan ice cream before it’s drizzled with icing and dulce de leche. –Ken Miller

into an antechamber that contains two different passages. The gatekeeper will present you with a series of puzzles. Once you’ve solved the puzzles in order, you’ll have the code to gain access to a very stylish, exclusive-feeling space.
National Geographic Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary takes travelers on virtual voyages, circumnavigating the globe from its physical location inside Bally’s with floor-toceiling photographs of extraordinary
phenomena as curated by the National Geographic Society. Fifty photos serve as 50 different backgrounds for unlimited social media photo ops. There are caves decked out with stalactite-like icicles and glassy bodies of water
that stretch into infinity. Spectacular mountain ranges, mysterious mounds and statues that seem to emerge from the earth await. A diver discovers a submerged tree. A kangaroo appears to hop on top of the surface of a lake.

stone unturned in its quest to educate us about what the body is capable of. It’s all possible through a process called plastination, and it allows looks into the body you’ve never seen before.
Fall down the rabbit hole (meaning take the escalator down from Bally’s casino floor) to The Cabinet of Curiosities and The Lock . This strange, beautiful new land is filled with drinking adventures combined with experiential storytelling, sure to make both your mind and body giddy with delight.
Your first adventure begins inside The Cabinet of Curiosities. Inside this
lounge, you can spend hours exploring cabinet after cabinet filled with oddities that have strange, funny and entertaining stories behind them. Each piece is assigned a number—find out its name and story by scanning a QR code on your phone. Look up No. 4381, the Mystical Typewriter, where folklore claims that a tale composed with the typewriter will make its author famous
but with irksome caveats. Or how about No. 6641, the Copper Watering Can once owned by Lucretia Spatz, who used it to water her prize-winning begonias. But the neighbors had no idea what she was grinding up in her basement to use for fertilizer. There’s also No. 8251, the Dancing Squid that once belonged to the breeders of competitive show-jumping squids.
Another great feature of The Cabinet is that some of the specialty cocktails are inspired by the oddities like the Bedazzled Skullcap Mojito with rum, mint leaves, lime, club soda and sugar. (Find the skullcap inside one of the cab inets and read about its strange story). Or opt for one of the other popular
cocktails that are twists on classics like the Peachtree Sweet Tea, a version of Long Island Iced Tea, mixed with vodka, gin, rum, peach liqueur, sour mix and sweetened tea.
Your adventure doesn’t end inside The Cabinet, though; it continues when you make a reservation for The Lock,
a speakeasy behind what looks like a vault door. Pick up the telephone to get a secret password, wait for a keyhole to open, give your password and the door opens into an antechamber where you and your party will have to solve a puzzle to make it into the intimate speakeasy. Inside, you’ll travel back in time and sip on specialty cocktails such as Smoke and Mirrors with tequila, mezcal, violet flower liqueur, lemon juice and hibiscus syrup, or the Key to My Pink Heart (this writer’s fave) with rum, crème de almond, crème de cocoa and oatmilk. A special touch inside The Lock is getting to build your own cocktail with the bartender based on your preferences.
“Enjoy our list, but know we can go above and beyond it,” says mixologist Daniel Ponsky. “We can cater a cocktail to your personality, your feelings and your mood and really curate an experience for you in the moment.”

Leilani Scharff is a superstar when it comes to opening and running restaurants. Before becoming vice president of operations for Brezza and Bar Zazu at Resorts World, she had helped open and run more than a dozen restaurants for star chefs including Bradley Ogden and Michael Mina. A couple of years ago, she joined chef Nicole Brisson and helped open Brezza and Bar Zazu.
“I have a lot of experience opening restaurants,” the California native says with a smile. “I love it. I love food and beverage. But I also think there’s some-

thing really special about cultivating a restaurant team, opening a restaurant— it’s a labor of love.”
As VP, it is Scharff’s job to be at both venues each day, checking in with the managers, teaching new hires about the culture of the brands, attending marketing meetings and menu meetings— basically doing it all!
“My job is to ensure my management team has what they need to do their job, and my management team needs to make sure the servers have what they need to do their job. Being able to see

all that work and translate all the way down to the guest and hear the guest say, ‘Oh my gosh, every single person I talked to was happy, was knowledgeable—it made the experience.’ It makes it all really rewarding.”
To say Scharff works hard is an understatement, but it’s easy to tell that the work she puts in is the work she loves doing. “I always say, ‘Work is my character trait,’ and I’m OK with that,” she says. “I have to be unapologetic about that fact, because I really love my job and what I do.” –Kiko Miyasato

When the Merulo Group purchased the SLS Las Vegas in 2018, it began a series of resort-wide renovations and changed the name to the Sahara Las Vegas, a nod to the glory of the historic hotel. The renovations brought a new gaming interior, the swanky lounge Casbar and a whole host of new restaurants, including the recently open Balla Italian Soul.
A collaboration between James Beard award-winner chef Shawn McClain and MC Hospitality, the restaurant stands across from the
theater, and stretches out to Las Vegas Boulevard South. You enter up a ramp, turning left for the bar scene and continuing on for the restaurant. It might be a good idea to make a detour to the bar before dinner to snag a cocktail or wine while waiting for your table. Some to consider are classics like the Manhattan, with High West rye, Carpano sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters, and the Venetian spritz, with Aperol, prosecco, club soda and dried orange slice; and house cocktails like Nonna’s

Dirty Sauce, with Moletto gin, dry vermouth and Filthy olive juice. Wine is available both by the glass and bottle (and the bottle selection is quite extensive, so you’re sure to find something you like).
The menu offers plenty of choic es without being overwhelming, starting with the antipasti. Order a classic salumi and cheese plate, with artisanal tidbits, olives and pickles; soft burrata with roasted peppers and tomato conserva; lamb tartare with preserved lemon, pickled eggplant and ricotta; or shellfish toast, with mussels, clams, calamari and ’nduja sausage.
The pasta selection features a variety of selections, from cappelletti with mortadella in brown butter to agnolotti with cheese, oyster mushroom and guanciale. There are a few pizzas here, too, like the Gotham, with a variety of cured meats, pomodoro sauce and fennel pollen. The decadent tartufo comes with confit potato, truffle salami and black truffles.
Other options include a 22-ounce Prime bone-in ribeye; pork Delmonico, which delivers a steak-like cut; Mary’s half-chicken with crispy skin; and sea bream, served with lemon, capers and wild greens. Side dishes are enjoyed by many as a necessary component of a meal, and here the contorni includes roasted potatoes with sausage, broccoli di Cicco (an heirloom Italian variety of the veggie) with garlic and lemon zest; upgrade on traditional mac and cheese with Gor-
gonzola and fontina baked lumache; baked eggplant with San Marzano tomatoes and mozzarella; and stuffed mushrooms. Oh, what riches!
And dessert isn’t neglected, either, as traditional goodies like tiramisu, panna cotta, bombolini, gelato and a chocolate tart will all make your mouth water. In the end, you may want to go with the Italian cookies and a nice espresso cocktail or limoncello, grappa or amaro. And lingering over those is never a bad thing.

Get to know Steve Aoki, one of Omnia nightclub’s—and music’s— biggest stars
RAMMY-nominated DJ and musical artist Steve Aoki describes his show at Omnia nightclub at Caesars Palace in three words: Playhouse, adventurous and journey. If you’ve ever been to one of Aoki’s shows, then you get it. If you haven’t, then you really need to get on that, because an Aoki show is one of the biggest parties you’ll experience on the Las Vegas Strip. Aoki performs at Omnia on Dec. 9—his birthday show, which promises to be an all-out bash—and he helps revelers ring in 2023 with a show on Dec. 31. If you can’t catch him this year, don’t fret; he’s on Omnia’s roster for next year, performing in January and February, as well as at the nightclub’s
sister venue, Hakkasan at MGM Grand. Recently Las Vegas Magazine had a chance to have some fun with the DJ as we photographed him inside Omnia nightclub and got to chat with the renaissance man.
Aoki has long been at the top of the DJ world—he’s consistently been rated a top-10 DJ in the world, according to DJ Magazine. His unique style in both approaching music and life have kept him an in-demand performer and beloved celebrity all around the world. Aoki is heavily involved in charity work, even starting his own Aoki Foundation
that “supports organizations in the brain science and research areas with a specific focus on regenerative medicine and brain preservation.” He’s also a supporter of nurturing new music and artists through his 27-year-old independent record label, Dim Mak. Aoki is also a restaurateur (following in his father’s footsteps, who launched the successful Benihana brand in the U.S. in the 1960s) with a portfolio of more than 10 restaurants, including Kuru Kuru Pa at Resorts World and his pizza shop brand, Pizzaoki, opening a new (and first Las Vegas) outpost this winter at Aria.

In his entrepreneurial endeavors, Aoki co-founded and launched a successful trading-card game IP called MetaZoo. “We’ve been developing and growing this IP called MetaZoo during COVID, and when everything opened up, this IP opened up, and the last 16 months it’s grown to become a $50 million company,” Aoki says.
“It really is the fastest-growing company that I ever co-founded. So this year was really about understanding, preparation, experiment ing, learning different worlds, brand building and seeing one of those IPs take over and become one of the leading IPs in its industry. We’re one of the leaders in the space. It’s incredible to see something, outside of what I usually do, grow to such a culture-im pacting company. When I think about that, I think about this year is exploring different areas outside of music and growing those.”

seventh studio album, HiROQUEST: Genesis, which was just released in September. “HiROQUEST was born during COVID,” Aoki says. “It was born during isolation. My environment informs my creative process. For the most part wherever I’m touring, wherever I’m traveling is always going to be part of my musical story. Because this album was born in isolation, I was experimenting more. Which I (had) stopped doing, which is kinda sad because of how efficient my music life is—I’m pumping out records that are from my live shows or collaborations with what is happening within culture. So I went back to my roots (with this album).
Also during the COVID-19 pandemic, Aoki took to the studio to record his
“I was playing guitar more, playing bass more. I really started thinking about seeking out artists that spoke to me; the sound, the stylings of my youth. I put on more of an A&R hat and I was really seeking out alternative-style singers and also looking at artists that
haven’t broken yet, artists on the rise, doing something fresh and cool.
“ In large part, there’s a lot of brandnew artists on the album and the core genre is more alternative. I still have to represent the global sound of Steve Aoki, which is Latin-influenced, hiphop-influenced, EDM-influenced, and I love that on this album that I made sure to showcase different genres. It’s once again a global sound, but the core genre is alternative.”

You just taped another special for Comedy Central in Washington, D.C. That must have been a lot different from your last taping, the 2020 holiday special when things were still a bit dodgy during shutdown. It was great and the fans really came out. I love that theater (Warner Theater) because I did my second Comedy Central special there and introduced the character of Achmed. But, yes, the pandemic holiday special was nuts, because I hadn’t been doing any shows; I only worked on that material at home in my office. I didn’t tell a single joke to my wife or the people that work with me, nothing, I just got onstage.
You are known for not taking much time off, so it must have been strange to have all that downtime in the past few years, even if everyone else was taking a break.
Performing really is like riding a bicycle. If you’ve done it long enough, everything falls into place. I was only worried about my voice. It’s a muscle, and you need to keep it in shape, and I’m used to being onstage and talking for two hours at a time. But I spoke to a friend who’s a singer and said it would be fine, and she was right.
And you kept busy with some online content, right?
I did a lot of videos including a behindthe-scenes sort of thing on building the next character. That seems like it was a long time ago now, but he’s ended up being really successful in the shows, and he was great in the special. I feel like I’ve been working on it for a while, but you know, Peanut and Walter, they’ve been in my life for decades. These characters take a while to form.
Tell us about the new guy in the show.
He’s always stuck on his smart device. His name is Earl, but it’s spelled “URL.”
He has his phone and he’s always typing. Like I said, it took a while to develop, but literally four shows before the taping in D.C., I changed his voice, and everything just fell into place. He’s on a different level now. I feel like this guy is going to be in the act for a while, because everybody is stuck on their phone too much of the time, and I’m always searching for characters people can identify with.
What other new elements can we expect to see in your shows?
Well, Walter has become Joe Biden. Walter is Walter, but he pretends he’s Biden. That’s a bit of a challenge to entertain everyone with that, but I try to play it like Johnny Carson or Bob Hope would have. They made fun of the president and politics, and I think that’s what comedians are supposed to do, but these days it’s difficult to do that without polarizing your act. I try to make fun of both sides just a little bit, just enough to make people laugh. We’re not calling anybody names, just pointing out some of the goofy stuff going on in the world right now.
