Faces in the Crowd

I was recently having lunch with a colleague at Diablo’s Cantina, a restaurant inside the Luxor hotel, and my colleague noted that it was a terrific people-watching spot, thanks to its short walls and proximity to so many fun destinations. As our meal progressed, I had to concur—in fact, the people-watching was almost more fun than the meal itself (almost!).

This week’s issue is full of so many di erent forms of entertainment, all of which o er copious amounts of said people-watching:

Sports. This weekend, David Benavidez and Caleb Plant duke it out at MGM Grand Garden Arena for the World Boxing Council interim super-middleweight championship (“Heated Words,” p. 32).

Concerts. This week sees the continuation of both Luke Bryan’s mega-successful residency at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Doin’ His Thing,” p. 36 ) and Miranda Lambert’s residency at Planet Hollywood Resort (“She’s Got Wheels,” p. 18), the beginning of a limited engagement by Rick Springfield at The STRAT (“Rocking the Room,” p. 34), and the return of Barry Manilow to Westgate Las Vegas as he nears Elvis Presley’s concert record there (“This One’s for the Fans,” p. 12).

Theater. The Tony Award-winning smash SIX— The Musical debuts at The Venetian (“Supreme Queens,” p. 38).

Dining. People-watching venues don’t get much better than Nobu Las Vegas at Paris (“Legendary Bites,” p. 28) and ¡VIVA! at Resorts World (“A Great Meetup,” p. 14).

Nightlife. Ghostbar at Palms has some of the best views you’ll fi nd anywhere in town (“High-Spirited Nightlife,” p. 17 ).

Westgate headliner is poised to break Elvis Presley’s Las Vegas record

I was never able to see Elvis Presley when he performed at the International, and so I can’t begin to imagine the energy level from the crowd at just one of his shows. But I have seen Barry Manilow, who performs in the same space as the King did those many decades ago. And I’m here to tell ya: I’ve seen a lot of concerts in a lot of venues, and nothing in my experience matches the electricity generated by a Manilow crowd.

I’d go so far as to say it’s what keeps Manilow going. The man is 79 years old! He has nothing left to prove; he’s earned the right to retire and rest on his many laurels. But yeah, if I was in his shoes and got the reaction he does every time he steps onto a stage, I’d probably be performing into my golden years, too!

Ask any Manilow fan who’s been to countless Manilow performances, and they’ll all say the same thing: Barry is the ultimate showman, a consummate entertainer who leaves everything on the field every single time. He may be pushing 80, but this dude’s stamina is legendary. And his fans are with him every step of the way, waiting for hours sometimes after a show to pose with him for photographs and autographs. We’ve all seen those concerts where entertainers point into the audience as if they spotted someone they know; at a Manilow concert, it’s a pretty good bet Manilow actually does!

And good news: Manilow’s schedule for this year guarantees he will be breaking Elvis’ Vegas concert record by September! Manilow, in a statement, said, “I am honored and humbled to be performing on the same stage that the King once graced. Setting a new record for concerts at the Westgate Las Vegas International Theater is a true privilege.”

That means at least a few more months of favorites such as “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Copacabana” … more than I can realistically list in one writeup. Time to update the Las Vegas history books. –Ken Miller

A Great Meetup

Latin-inspired restaurant offers tasty cocktails and shareable dishes in a classy cantina setting

Get a taste of California’s Latin-inspired cuisine at Resorts World Las Vegas, where Ray Garcia’s ¡VIVA! offers brunch, lunch and dinner all week long. Garcia, whose elevated cuisine has thrilled Southern California diners for years, brought a variety of favorites to his Las Vegas showpiece.

The restaurant, situated in the District, features two patios, one indoor along the promenade and the outdoors opposite the entrance. The entire place channels a classy Latin cantina, with hanging rope walls on the interior patio, cane-back chairs and plush booths in the restaurant’s main dining area. You’ll also find large murals channeling Latin motifs on the walls throughout—it all creates a fun, yet at the same time upscale, environment.

Grab a margarita, paloma or bottomless sangria, then settle down to the serious business of chips and salsa, served with heirloom corn tortilla chips and salsa tatemada. Some diners may require guacamole, and that comes with pico de gallo and chips as well. You’ll also find a good selection of Mexican beers, tequila and mezcal, plus a variety

of other appetizers are sure to pique the appetite, like coctel camarone, a shrimp cocktail with Clamato, cucumber and avocado, or the coctel mixto, with seafood like snapper, shrimp, octopus and bay scallops.

Brunch dishes feature items such as chilaquiles, a barbacoa melt and chorizo con huevos, with pork chorizo, scrambled eggs and refried lentils for an unexpected touch. Mimosas come in flavors like mango, orange and watermelon. For lunch, grab cauliflower tacos with cashew cream or chicken tinga with guacamole and pickled red onions. Platos especiales include items like the torta (carnitas on bolillo bread), salmon with dried chorizo and chicken enchiladas.

The selection gets even bigger at dinner, where you can enjoy duck mole (a confit duck leg with mole negro), vegan squash tamales, grilled pineapple with goat cheese, shareable costillas (a rack of lamb with ancho-rubbed ribs and cabbage slaw), and carne asada in New York strip, filet mignon and skirt steak. –Nina King

Palms’ legendary lounge is back in action

It’s a hot spot that has long been home to some of the best themed parties, top DJ talents, and unbeatable views of the city—and if you have yet to visit Ghostbar, there’s no better time.

She’s Got Wheels

The Queen of Country’s high-octane residency returns to Planet Hollywood Resort

Record-shattering, award-winning country superstar Miranda Lambert may want to see the desert from a painted palomino, but she doesn’t seem to mind actin’ up on the Zappos Theater stage in Las Vegas instead.

Hosting her first-ever Las Vegas residency, Velvet Rodeo, Lambert belts out an extensive selection of hits from a catalog of tunes. With nine solo albums and four more released with Pistol Annies (a band featuring Lambert alongside Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley), the singer boasts more than 75 awards for the tracks that made her famous outside a small town.

Lambert clearly had a hankering for getting into something when she set out to create Velvet Rodeo (playing March 24-25 and 30). The stage might as well be soaked in kerosene, because the singer lights on fire when the spotlight hits— sometimes literally, thanks to a jacket that shoots out sparks.

Enlivening Velvet Rodeo, ceiling projections, dynamic lighting and fierce pyrotechnics engulf the entire theater, teleporting its audience from day to night, from music video to animated background, from hit to hit. No detail has been spared in this show, but flashy set

design or not, raw, unadulterated talent has long been paramount to the star’s success. But those qualities aren’t found just within the singer, they wind throughout the entire production. It takes all kinds of kinds to curate an excellent residency, and Lambert’s kind is simply gifted.

Guitarists Ethan Ballinger and Jerry Massey stun while steel guitarist Spencer Cullum and bassist Jonathan Murray bring richness to the stage.

Keys player Daniel Mitchell, drummer Max Zemanovic and backing vocalist Gwen Sebastian carry listeners through the songs, each bringing their own powerful sounds.

More than just a concert, this residency has a storytelling quality to it. As Lambert guides you from song to song, it’s almost as if she’s loaded you up into her little red wagon (hopefully she’s fixed the front seat and axle) and taken you on a ride through her musical journey. It’s not necessarily chronological, but by the time the curtain closes, she’s shown you what lies within a heart like hers. –Em

Vegas attraction places you fully into natural wonders

The FlyOver Las Vegas experience is transportive in more ways than one. Yes, it makes you feel like you are actually flying over some of nature’s most spectacular wonders, but the feeling of escape can be felt the moment you step through the doors. A long corridor leads you to a comfortable lounge area with soft drinks and pastries, and after you select your journey—the Canadian Rockies or the Grand Canyon—you make your way through more winding corridors. By the time you arrive at your first destination, you’ll feel like you’ve left the Strip far behind.

FlyOver is actually divided into three segments: A small room with a large rectangular screen where an image from nature plays, putting you in a contemplative mood; a round antechamber, where you’re introduced to the journey you are about to take; and the ride itself, an amazing technological achievement.

You may feel like you’re boarding an amusement park ride (you even buckle in and stow all loose items underneath your seat). Feels Like the First Time

Legendary band returns to Vegas for mini-residency

As many accolades as Foreigner has collected through the years, it can now add “Vegas Headliner.” Its history started around the time a teenage Kelly Hansen began to be recognized for his voice and joined his first band. The eras that Foreigner and Hansen’s band Hurricane emerged from are marked by memories of hedonism, but the only indulgence Hansen has planned during the band’s The Venetian stay is the caloric kind, and only if the timing is right.

“I have several friends who are

chefs at restaurants around town, although it’s very hard for me to eat a fancy meal on a gig day,” says Hansen. “Who wants to eat a heavy meal then run around onstage?”

Unlike a lot of veteran groups who experience changes, Foreigner’s former members have an open invitation to join the band in concert. Founding lead singer Lou Gramm’s continuing health issues after having surgery for a brain tumor in 1997 caused him to curtail participating in planned reunion shows, but Hansen has Gramm’s endorsement. “Lou

is great,” says Hansen. “He’s always been gracious to me, and hopefully he and everyone else has always gotten the feeling from me that I have an immense amount of respect for what he’s accomplished. In fact, it’s been the same with all the original members. They’re all such great guys. We share a thing that’s really rare, to be associated with this catalog of songs.” –

“If you don’t know it’s there, you just don’t know,” says John Pettei, Clique Hospitality partner. “Easy’s

is an intimate and sultry room with phenomenal live music and incredible drinks. We’ve had multiple people say that it is what Vegas needs more of. It’s luxurious and has a great sensibility to it.”

with two guitars.” Matching the swell sounds are the delicious specialty cocktails and the experiential cocktails called Show Stoppers.

“Our Show Stoppers are what set us apart from any other lounge,” Pettei says. “These cocktails are over-the-top drinks that usually are paired for couples, but they have a wow factor to them. That element that draws people in and really gets them to enjoy the moment.”

These cocktails include the Smoke Show, served in a vintage cigar box with candy cigarettes and smoke. The cocktail portion is a blend of Angel’s Envy bourbon, banana liqueur, sweet vermouth, chocolate bitters, dehydrated orange and mint, served up in two glass pipes. Don’t miss the Shroomin’ cocktail, too, served in mushroom glasses that are set among moss with fog rolling around it ,or the Heart of the Ocean cocktail, served in a glass seashell resting on white sands.

Specialty cocktails make the delish list, too, starting with Angel

Eyes, a blend of The Botanist gin, cantaloupe juice, orgeat, lemon and prosecco and a rose-pink sugar rim. For a unique-tasting cocktail, try the Green Monk with Bulldog gin, yellow Chartreuse, honey, lemon and cucumber, with a to-die-for mint-sugar rim. Pettei’s must-pick specialty cocktail is the 3 Lil Bears, a vodka-based cocktail “that’s beautifully crafted with a lot of dimensions in flavor,” he says. “Plus, it’s so unique in how it is poured over three ice cubes shaped like little bears and each bear has a different color and flavor—watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew.”

With some of the coolest cocktails that catch the eye and satisfy the tastebuds, live music that moves the body and satisfies the soul and opulent surroundings that transport you to another world, Easy’s Cocktail Lounge turns out to be much sweeter than that dessert you were after.

If you pay a visit to The Mirage, you’re more than likely to run into Brent Marks; the general manager of nightlife for the property clocks about 23,000 steps during a workday. “I’m always running around this property,” he says, laughing.

We got the Chicago native to slow down for a minute and meet us for a photo shoot and interview at Rhumbar Tropical Ultra Lounge. “I run the dayto-day operations for our nightlife and daylife venues, including Rhumbar, Bare Pool Lounge, Center Bar and Parlor Cocktail Lounge,” he says.

Yes, Marks is a busy man, but he’s totally into it. “My work ethic is I don’t come to anybody with problems, I come to them with solutions, and I figure it out,” Marks says. “I may not know the answers, but I’ll go and find it.” Marks uses his past work experiences to aid him in elevating The Mirage’s offerings; he has spent more than a decade in the industry, working in nightlife in Scottsdale, Ariz., and some of Vegas’ top nightlife and daylife spots. He joined The Mirage almost two years ago to head up the nightlife programming and

For now, Marks has added live music to the lounges like dueling pianos and rock bands, and live DJs at Rhumbar for that clubbier vibe, and he continues to elevate all the cocktail offerings.

Nobu Las Vegas expands an already impressive empire

Nobu brand has enjoyed great success internationally over the decades. Nobu Matsuhisa’s empire expanded to the Las Vegas Strip in 2013 with the opening of the Nobu Hotel and restaurant, and it continues to grow. The most recent addition is Nobu Las Vegas at Paris, a restaurant that fits perfectly into its surroundings and provides an unforgettable experience.

The vibe of Nobu Las Vegas is very much one of stimulation: Visual stimulation, courtesy of all the people-watching to be enjoyed from the “outdoor” patio fronting the cobblestone walkway of Le Boulevard, not to mention the ornate décor and lighting of the space itself (there’s also a cozy “indoor” space complete with dining room and sushi bar); and taste stimulation, courtesy of some of the best Japanese cuisine you’re likely to fi nd in Southern Nevada.

But fi rst, a toast! There are cocktails here for every palate on this menu. For those who like aroma and spice, try the Matsuhisa Martini, made with Belevedere vodka, Hokusetsu Junmai sake, ginger and Japanese cucumber. For fans of tart, the

garita delivers with Corralejo añejo tequila, passion fruit, lime, honey and shichimi. And if it’s boldness you desire, defi nitely try the Kunsei Old-Fashioned, featuring Shibui pure malt Japanese whiskey, Angostura and orange bitters and monkfruit syrup, all smoked with cherrywood.

Now you’re in for a real treat—if you can decide, that is. Nobu Las Vegas’ menu is simply bursting with both hot and cold dishes, all presented in the most visually appealing way possible. You’ll want to start with cold dishes like salmon, toro or yellowtail tartare with caviar, tuna tataki with tosazu, lobster shitake salad and crispy rice with spicy tuna. Nigiri and sashimi options include yellowtail with jalapeño, fresh water eel, albacore, scallop and sea urchin.

Hot dishes are equally tempting and tantalizing, from seafood (black cod butter lettuce, lobster wasabi pepper and squid “pasta” with light garlic sauce) to meats (free-range chicken with Nobu sauce, beef tenderloin tobanyaki and lamb with Nobu sauce).

Any of these selection pairs wonderfully with a large selection of vegetarian o erings, from warm mushroom salad and eggplant with miso to field greens with Matsuhisa dressing.

Super middleweights David Benavidez and Caleb Plant brawl to settle it all

It’s hard to pinpoint when David Benavidez’s dislike of Caleb Plant developed into raging hatred, but it was on full display at the Feb. 2 press conference in Los Angeles that kicked o promotion for their Saturday night fight. The World Boxing Council interim super-middleweight championship is on the line with the victor going on to face Saul “Canelo” Álvarez, but there’s more at stake.

Pride, for one. “The animus between these two guys is real,” said Showtime Sports’ Brian Custer at the opening of the press conference. “And let’s be honest. When you have that kind of hostility, it can produce iconic, great fights.”

Custer compared Benavidez-Plant to Ali-Frazier, Robinson-LaMotta and Leonard-Durán after insisting there was no hyperbole to the hype surrounding the matchup of 168-pound pugilists. As if to validate Custer’s words, both Benavidez and his father José verbally disrespected Plant with extreme belligerence during the latter’s time on the microphone. They peppered Plant with pejoratives that rhyme with “witch” and “wussy” while Plant’s passive-aggressive reference to Benavidez’s failure to pass a drug test was just one triggering transgression that caused “The Mexican Monster” to leap to his feet and attempt to menace his nemesis.

Benavidez proudly embraces the nickname bestowed upon him by Mike Tyson. The undefeated fighter specializes in battering opponents with flurries of combinations developed while training under his father. He became the youngest WBC super-mid-

dleweight champion in history at age 20 by defeating Ronald Gavril for the WBC title in a September 2017 split decision. A year later, Benavidez tested positive for cocaine and was stripped of his title.

He returned to the ring in March 2019, two months after Plant won the IBF super middleweight title from José Uzcátegui. The Nashville native defended his title three times before losing it to Álvarez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in November 2021. Álvarez stalked Plant to neutralize his mobility and fi nally clocked the taller fighter with a left hook and right uppercut in the 11th round.

Plant is game for a rematch and proved his worth by knocking out Anthony Dirrell in October. Benavidez beat David Lemieux in May to take his WBC interim super middleweight title. The match with Plant is his fi rst defense.

Benavidez alleges Plant sucker punched his welterweight brother José Jr. Plant says there were inappropriate social media comments made by the Benavidez camp regarding his deceased daughter Alia. Benavidez expressed his desire, at the press conference, to beat the living (expletive) out of Plant and “put this (expletive) in the hospital.”

Someone will walk out of the ring with a belt as well as bragging rights to coming out on top in boxing’s biggest feud of the moment. For both fighters, it’s the most important bout of their lives up until now. Benavidez, in the end, appreciates Plant for bringing out the animal in him, but predicts he’ll stop the fight in round six. Plant would like to prove him wrong.

Rick Springfield is no stranger to Las Vegas, having played everywhere from Fremont Street Experience to Mandalay Bay. He performed at the Aladdin Theatre in the early days of his success, appeared mid-career at Caesars Palace’s Circus Maximus and played the lead in a 2001-’02 theatrical concert production at MGM Grand. He most recently shared the stage with Sammy Hagar during a benefit concert at MGM Grand Garden Arena, but his next shows are at an intimate 900-seat showroom at The STRAT Theater this weekend.

Springfield’s punked-up cover of Hagar’s “I’ve Done Everything for You”

was the lead single from the Australian-American’s 1981 breakthrough album Working Class Dog and became a top 10 hit after the explosive success of his No. 1 hit “Jessie’s Girl.” Hagar would figure into Springfield’s life again after launching his own residency at The STRAT.

“I guested with him on one of his shows, and it seemed like a great place to do a residency. ... It’s a great room.” Springfield told Las Vegas Magazine. “If you want to get up close with it nice and loud, it’s the place to be.”

Springfield won a Grammy for “Jessie’s Girl” and would receive nominations for “I Get Excited,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers” and “Affair of the Heart,” all setlist staples for the musician who paid the bills as an actor until landing on the Billboard charts. Working Class Dog and 1982 follow-up Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet came after a decade of determination and disap-

pointments, becoming emblematic as examples of ’80s pop production.

The songwriting, chord riffing and attitude were clearly influenced by Elvis Costello. “Elvis was a big influence, certainly,” says Springfield. “Working Class Dog was inspired by the whole punk thing. I was pretty much done with disco, and when punk came out and went back to guitars, it was very inspiring for me.”

Springfield focused on the songwriting of artists such as Costello, The Police and Nick Lowe, and related to the brashness of the punk movement in general. He channeled pent-up frustration and his battle with depression (what he calls “The Darkness”) into a frenetic musical energy that represents a pop music moment in time.

He established his brand in the process, and has alternated between stage, screen and concert venues in the ensuing decades. A 2009 guest role satirizing himself on Californication endeared Springfield to a whole new generation; he held his own starring alongside Meryl Streep in director Jonathan Demme’s final film Ricki and the Flash; and “Jessie’s Girl” keeps popping up in film and TV soundtracks.

Every so often, Resorts World Las Vegas’ usual crowd changes. The array of people on the casino floor, seated at eateries and strolling through shops, shifts from typical travelers to a country crowd. And when you start seeing Stetsons and Tony Lamas fill the corridors, you’re in luck, because it might mean that Luke Bryan is back for another night of his Vegas residency.

“I have enjoyed so many milestones in my career, many of them were too big to even dream,” Bryan told Las Vegas Magazine. “I am truly out there loving every moment I’m onstage and, as long as I am connecting with the fans, I plan to keep doing it.”

It goes without saying that the man who has 30 No. 1 singles obviously plays great tunes (with the help of his brilliantly talented band, of course.) His residency setlist takes you from album to album, ensuring you’ll hear plenty of your favorites. In fact, Bryan makes a point to play each of his hits, using medleys to his advantage. But what makes this residency exceptionally special is the singer’s oh-so-enjoyable personality. Seriously, have you heard this man giggle? It’s infectious.

When Bryan pauses between tracks, each audience member is engaged,

never knowing what endearing anecdote is about to come. Relating tales involving his mother, his Vegas adventures and his musical inspirations, the singer fosters a unique connection with the crowd. It feels like you’re hanging with a good friend, chatting over a few beers.

In a particularly intimate bit, a glowing grid of lights lowers, separating Bryan and his vibrant blue piano from the rest of the stage. As the once-animated stage behind him goes dark, the room mellows, with the warm shine carrying comfort through the theater.

“My favorite moment in the show is sitting down by myself to play the piano,” Bryan said. “It’s a great time for me to really feel the energy in the room and go o -script a bit if I want.”

Bryan’s excitement for this moment is felt. Taking his seat at the piano, the music man takes the time to simply enjoy a few melodies with his captivated listeners, even entertaining some audience suggestions. His love and appreciation of music fills the room.

The singer is tireless when it comes to ensuring concertgoers have the opportunity to feel a connection. From running through the lower-level seats passing out cans of Two Lane American Golden Lager (the product of Bryan’s collaboration with Constellation Brands) to performing to fans in the nosebleeds from a suspended platform that shifts between the higher levels, Bryan has taken care to make sure each attendee has an incredible experience.

stories through none other than a pop concert. As part of its U.S. tour, the show opens at The Venetian on March 21 for a short residency with dates extending through May.

Created as a student project by Lucy Moss and Toby Harlow, SIX first premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017. After gaining the support of Kenny Wax and Global Musicals, the show graduated to having its first professional off-West End production later that year. And the rest was her-story.

With catchy pop tunes and an all-women cast, SIX rewrites history to tell the story of Henry VIII’s tumultuous love life through the perspective of the women who endured it, reshaping their public personas and emphasizing their own successes. It’s an uplifting show complete with strong girl-power energy.

“When I think about the message of the show, it’s acceptance, it’s community and it’s women supporting women; queens supporting queens,” Jasmine Forsberg, who plays Jane Seymour, said. “We like to say, ‘Queens fix each other’s crowns.’

In social media and reality TV, we’re so used to watching women compete with one another, and we’re so quick to compare them rather than to celebrate their (differences.) Most of all, it’s about celebrating what unique

things everybody brings to the table and how we’re stronger as a whole than we are separate.”

For the production’s single act, the leading ladies come together to form a pop group, each taking turns to sing about the hardships they faced in their marriage to the King. Some of the queens’ songs focus on their own powerful moments while other songs aim to correct the mischarac-

terization they faced due to efforts to flatter the king. And each character is inspired by the pop queens of today like Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Rihanna, of course.

“Essentially, we thought, ‘If I came to see a show where Henry’s wives were “reclaiming their stories,” what would I expect this to look like?’ The answer we found was a big, badass, Beyoncé-style ‘F-you’ to Henry,” creator Lucy Moss said in a 2019 interview with Sydney Opera House.

It’s a refreshing take on musical theater.
