Celebrity Cachet

Star power is, for lack of a better term, a powerful thing indeed. It’s what sells movie tickets; it’s what makes certain streaming series successful; it’s what sells sports jerseys and athletic shoes. And it’s defi nitely a force to be reckoned with in Las Vegas, where everywhere you go, everywhere you look, there’s a celebrity influence.

The most obvious example of this is, of course, the concerts Las Vegas hosts on a weekly basis. The biggest names are always on tap at any of our world-class performance venues, highlighted this week by Bruno Mars, who returns to Las Vegas this week to perform at Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Making Moves,” p. 32). You’ll also have the chance to see Seal perform some of his most iconic hits at The Venetian (“Magnificent Kiss,” p. 34).

The star power continues with Tig Notaro, a woman of many talents who will be bringing her unique brand of stand-up comedy to Virgin Hotels Las Vegas this week (“All-Around Funny,” p. 12).

Another example of star power in Las Vegas is its many celebrity-endorsed restaurants. One of the newest is The Bedford by Martha Stewart at Paris. The domestic icon is experiencing a bit of a renaissance of late, even appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She’s as relevant as ever, and as her restaurant illustrates, sometimes simple is best (“A Warm Welcome,” p. 14).

The past stars of Las Vegas are still making an impact, thanks to tribute shows like The Rat Pack is Back at Tuscany Suites & Casino, which re-creates the energy and fun that audiences enjoyed when Frank, Sammy and Dean performed at the Sands more than 50 years ago (“The Boys Are Back,” p. 20).

But the real star of Las Vegas this week? You. Without you, there is no Las Vegas. If we could give you your own Walk of Fame star, we would!

Multitalented Tig Notaro performs in Las Vegas

Emmy- and Grammy-nominated comedian Tig Notaro, known for her work across many different forms of media, brings her charming, deadpan humor to Las Vegas this week as part of her Hello Again Tour Las Vegas Magazine’s Em Jurbala caught up with the comic ahead of her one-nightonly performance.

Since you’ve played Vegas before, is there anything you look forward to when you revisit?

I was never really the biggest fan of Vegas, but my wife and I brought our kids about a month ago for this private gig—I was hired for a wedding—and we had such a great time. Then we went back a week later for a gig in Vegas, we again brought the kids, and we had such a great time that it has changed our view and feeling about Vegas. So yes, I am genuinely excited to be back to Vegas.

In addition to stand-up, fans have also been able to enjoy your talents in movies, TV and podcasts, among other things. Is there one particular forum you enjoy more than the others?

I really do enjoy podcasting. Even though I do acting, I don’t really identify as an actor. Part of my favorite moments of working in TV and film is actually when the director yells “Cut!” and then I get to hang out with the other actors, which is kind of similar to podcasting. Just hanging out, chatting. It’s kind of crazy that that becomes a job.

What’s it like getting to hang out with so many creative people in so many realms of entertainment?

Well, sometimes there’s the bad experiences, but most of the time it’s really incredible. And you get

kind of—I don’t know if “spoiled” is the right thing— but you start to think, “Oh, this is how the world is, and how people are. They’re creative and funny,” and that’s obviously just not the case. But I would say it’s such a pleasure to get to know so many interesting, hilarious and intelligent people. That’s not always the case, but a lot of the time there’s a reason the entertainment industry drew these people there. They’ve got interesting stories to tell or different perspectives. It’s a luxury.

What’s it like walking onto stages as someone who has given fans such an in-depth look into your life through your documentary, Tig, various specials, podcasts and such?

It’s comforting. And then it’s also exciting because they might think they know me and then oftentimes they see a very different side of me that’s maybe a little sillier or something. There’s usually a curveball where people were like, “Oh I wasn’t expecting that.”

Do you like to surprise people onstage?

Yeah, of course! I think that’s a huge part of comedy, hoping for that surprise.

Where can people get more Tig?

I have two podcasts, Don’t Ask Tig and Cheryl and Tig: True Story, and then I’m also going to be on the new season of The Morning Show this fall. I don’t know when my next special is coming out, I believe that’s in fall as well. Oh, and my newest season of Star Trek: Discovery comes out this summer.

Escaping your everyday life and becoming lost in the neon playground of Sin City never disappoints. And with that, a serene taste of home can often be the breath of fresh air every Vegas vacation needs; luckily Martha Stewart has you covered.

The Bedford by Martha Stewart , a collaboration between the domestic icon and Marquee Brands, transports you to her New York farmhouse through decor and dishes that conjure feelings of comfort in a very personal but elegant way.

“No fads,” Stewart said in a recent roundtable interview at the restaurant. “We’re looking for a balanced and appealing menu.” Balanced and appealing these dishes surely are.

Patrons can enjoy a plethora of elevated appetizers like the housemade bread basket, which features an eye-catching trio of baked beauties, and the oysters Rockefeller (pictured), baked with Pernod cream, spinach and watercress with a parsley breadcrumb topping.

While there are no bad choices here, the pierogis are clearly a

standout starter with their fluffy potato filling and brown butter. “My mother, Big Martha, (the pierogis are) her recipe … Mother made great pierogi, and my record was 21 of them—and I could still eat 21. They’re so good. But that’s probably my favorite recipe,” Stewart said. “It’s a silly thing, but ethnic food, family food, is kind of important to all of us. It should be.”

Entrées like the roast chicken, stuffed with herbed breadcrumbs and the honey mustard-glazed salmon, served with wilted spinach and confit shallots, bring rich flavor, while an array of steak options are sure to satisfy. For vegetarians, the fettuccine Alfredo with summer truffle offers a hearty meal, complete with a creamy white sauce and aged Grana Padano.

Skipping sides like Big Martha’s potato purée and the roasted Brussels sprouts would surely be a major misstep, but even worse would be forgoing dessert. The upside-down lemon meringue pie is a must, with a tart lemon curd and crunchy meringue topping that is simply irresistible. –Em Jurbala

There may be shortages in some sectors of retail, but the shelves are as full at Omega Mart today as they were when the experiential art destination opened at AREA15. Dented cans of Camel’s Dream of Mushroom and Barely Barley meal substitute “sops” are abundant, as are jars of P-2000 Cracker Spackle and bottles of home freshener spray Who Told You This Was Butter?

There is no shortage of visitors from around the world either, with reactions to Meow Wolf’s off-Strip maximalist satire of consumerism expressed in a variety of languages by “shoppers” perusing the aisles. Verbal expressions

give way to speechless amazement when exploration uncovers entries to an alternate universe. Like a wardrobe enabling children to enter Narnia, Omega Mart has several passageways hidden in plain sight that allow explorers into a world of pure imagination—some 60 environments created by a collective of artists with insatiable appetites for surmounting art-world conventions including The Infinitizer. Manifesting permanent immersive art experiences that people would pay to visit has been a goal that had firmed up for the group of Santa Fe visionaries by 2011 when they created The Due

Return, a full-sized explorable ship inside a Santa Fe gallery. The next year, they made a prototype Omega Mart, with 1,000 schoolchildren helping to create its sardonic consumer goods.

Taking in the sights and sounds is sensually satisfying on its own, but there’s a storyline involving Omega Mart’s fictional parent company Dramcorp, its missing founder Walter Dram and his daughter Cecelia. Unraveling the enigma behind Dramcorp is a deep dive that conspiracy buffs may find worth the time commitment. –Matt

Mr. Las Vegas lets audiences get to know more about him in intimate Vegas show

The last time I went to see Wayne Newton in his show, Up Close and Personal, he told a story that broke my heart, but shows a side of the entertainment industry that most of us never take the time to think about:

When Newton was 23 years old, he made an appearance on TV’s The Lucy Show. His appearance made such a splash that the networks executives approached Newton about starring in his own show. He was thrilled, but Lucille Ball asked him to see her before accepting the offer.

Owing a great debt to Ball for putting him on her show, Newton valued her opinion and advice. And her advice came in the form of a question: “Have you ever heard Jim Nabors sing?” Newton, who, like Nabors, had a beautiful singing voice but a bit of a high-pitched speaking voice, said he loved Jim Nabors’ singing voice. Ball’s followup question: “What is Jim Nabors mostly known for?” And the answer came back: Gomer Pyle, the stumbling, bumbling comedy character he played on television.

The message was clear to Newton: He could either be known for his voice (and massive talent on almost every instrument known to man) or for whatever character television came up for him. It wasn’t even a choice. And, as millions of his fans who have lined up to see him perform will attest, he made the right one.

Up Close and Personal is filled with such stories, and Newton rarely tells the same ones twice. That’s right—he’s got so many stories he could keep this show going for years, and no two would be the same. But those wanting to hear music, fear not: Newton is backed by a great band, and delivers some of the classics his fans can’t get enough of, like “Viva Las Vegas,” “Daddy Don’t You Run So Fast” and several others. He’s also occasionally joined by surprise guest stars.

When you stroll through The Shops at Crystals, you’ll find far more than just a run-of-the-mill retail experience. The luxurious shopping complex not only features more than 50 of the world’s best brands, but also combines art, architecture, dining and attractions into one cohesive whole.

Head into Alexander McQueen for iconic footwear and colorful bags. Prada, whose pedigree dates back to 1913, features apparel and a selection of bags, shoes and accessories—and it’s the largest location in North America.

with tiles and adorned with seasonal flowers, while the treehouse, an imposing, three-story structure, hosts the popular Mastro’s Ocean Club inside on the second floor.

The Boys Are Back

Tribute show to a bygone era is nonstop fun

More than 50 years later, it’s still electric to listen to recordings of the Rat Pack performances at The Sands in Las Vegas. It’s hard to imagine we will ever top the energy of that period in our storied history, but The Rat Pack is Back comes darned close. This is a tribute show to set the whole city singing and laughing, a note-perfect replication of a simpler (and much, much less politically correct) time. As Chris Jason (as Frank Sinatra) tells the audience, “This is 1960. We can say whatever

we want.” And the audience (at least the one I was in) responded with wild applause and cheers.

Joined by Dean Martin (Drew Anthony), Sammy Davis Jr. (Kyle Diamond) and an on-point band that includes a piano, saxophone, trumpets, drums and bass, Sinatra warms up the crowd with “Fly Me to the Moon,” quickly joined by Martin for an audience singalong of “That’s Amore.” (Warning: This is a small venue, and the performers get up close and personal. Sitting stone-

faced and crossing your arms here is not recommended, lest you want to draw the rebuke of Martin, who might suggest you need a drink.)

Meanwhile, as you listen to standards like “That’s Life,” “My Way,” “(Theme From) New York, New York” and “The Lady Is a Tramp,” you’ll swear you’re hearing (and seeing) the genuine article in front of you. –Ken

Should the puzzles be completed, you will be welcomed into an exclusive, stylish lounge with a

full bar and robust cocktail offerings. Best yet—the mixologists at The Lock will custom make cocktails based on your mood, circumstance, and more.

New menu items

The Cabinet of Curiosities and The Lock recently debuted new artisanal cocktails for spring and summer. The floral-forward menus, each unique for the different bars, are available until June 20. Daylight Beach Club at Mandalay Bay offers two different night

swim parties. Every Saturday night, enjoy Latin-inspired reggaeton music at the dayclub’s Neon Vibra party. The evening kicks off at 10 p.m. and will feature neon décor and a mix of Latin singers, DJs and rappers performing on the huge poolside stage. On June 3, catch Nano the DJ spinning all the top

Latin and reggaeton beats. Also at the dayclub is the Daylight at Night party on select Sundays, with Simp City providing the hottest R&B and hip-hop beats on June 3, beginning at 10 p.m. and going until the wee hours.

Tao Beach Dayclub at The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian throws a packed party called Evening Tide every Sunday beginning at 10 p.m. The ambience is boho-chic, and the evening will feature top performances, cool lighting and sound design and elevated late-night bites. Head to Marquee Dayclub for its Sunday evening pool party, Drenched After Dark, beginning at 10:30 p.m. From the rooftop pool, the glowing neon of the Strip that surrounds the dayclub helps light up the party, where big-name DJs perform until the early morning hours. Director of poker operations dealt a winning hand

It’s all about poker and punk rock for Andy Rich, director of poker operations for the Golden Nugget.

During his college years, Rich started his own record label signing hardcore punk and indie bands. He ran his label for a dozen years before he switched careers to his other passion, poker.

An avid poker player himself, Rich moved to Las Vegas in 2005 to pursue a career in cards. During his tenure in dealing, floor supervising and management, he’s worked in poker rooms all over the Strip, including Harrah’s, Fla-

mingo, Caesars Palace and Rio, where he earned the title of director of operations for the World Series of Poker. By 2014, Rich brought all his knowledge to the Golden Nugget poker room.

“I run the day-to-day operations of the poker room,” says Rich. He also has a major role in the property’s Grand Poker Series, now in its 16th year (beginning this week on May 30 and running through July 3). In his first year running the tournament there were about 7,000 entries, but now with Rich’s contributions to expanding the

This is not only a high-end room, it’s a menu odyssey where even diehard Chinese fans will find plenty of surprises.

It’s hard to not be impressed by the environs here—the entire establishment resembles a beautiful, black lacquer box, with red-, gold- and jade-tinged highlights.

A large, inviting bar is a great place to hang out and enjoy cocktails or wait for a table, and the dining area gives off a welcoming vibe with its light green-upholstered chairs and banquettes. The botanical-themed panels on the walls complete the overall effect of elegance.

The choices here are simply head-spinning in their variety. Appetizers ranged from crispy vegan spring rolls stuffed with

cabbage, mushrooms, carrots, and crispy crab claws served with shrimp paste, coriander, jicama and kataifi, to braised bird’s nest soup with Alaska crab meat and minced Chinese ham in supreme broth.

If you can’t choose between the dim sum options—pork and shrimp siu mai, shrimp har gow or seafood black truffle dumpling—get them all with the dim sum platter. Barbecue options include Macau-style roasted crispy pork belly with hoisin sauce and yellow mustard, barbecued boneless duckling with fresh mango and lemon sauce, and a combo platter with barbecue pork, roasted duck, roast pork belly, beef shanks, jellyfish, hoisin sauce and plum sauce.

Seafood fans will be delighted to find out that they have the ability to get the freshest options possible. Take your pick of live Australian spotted coral grouper, Cambodian marble goby, Australian or Maine lobster, Alaska king crab or poached Santa Barbara spotted prawns (all market price, of course).

Poultry, pork and beef all get the traditional treatments here—you’ll find standbys like kung pao chicken, sweet and sour crispy Kurobuta pork and stir-fried shredded U.S. Angus beef, as well as Peking duck and wok-fried A5 Japanese wagyu beef tenderloin. If you’re vegetarian, choose from variations like sweet and sour crispy vegetarian pork, Sichuan vegan mapo tofu (made with Impossible meat) or black pepper crunchy vegetables, a flavorful array of lotus roots, wood ear, asparagus, carrots and jicama in sesame oil.

Rounding out these amazing options are rice and noodle dishes like truffle crab meat fried rice (accompanied with egg, butternut squash, scallions and broccoli), Malaysia-style kway tiao (made with Chinese sausage, shrimp, bean sprouts, green chives and crispy pork lard) and Cantonese-style wok-fried hor fun (featuring U.S. Angus beef, silver sprouts, chives, onions and sesame).

has been quiet as of late. Too quiet. His Twitter account went inactive in February, save for an April shout-out tweet to an ailing Jamie Foxx. That’s around the time he called collaborator Brody Brown into the studio to work on his fourth album, the follow-up to his comeback to the charts as part of Silk Sonic. Mars’ previous full-length release was 2016’s 24K Magic, seven years ago. The pressure was on going into Memorial Day Weekend as he prepares to resume his Las Vegas residency.

Miley Cyrus filled the void in Mars’ absence earlier this year with her monster hit “Flowers,” its chorus both paying homage to and answering Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.” Cyrus flipped

the script on Mars’ 2014 song about wistful regret with a self-care anthem that embraces empowerment and having no regrets, a final word on the end of a relationship.

Mars’ attitude is more along the lines of Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” when it comes to former or future flames. Now the door is wide open for him to reply to and reference Cyrus’ interpolation of his words,

whether live or in the studio. He and Brown co-wrote “All I Ask” for Adele, in which the singer requests her lover to grant her one more night as their relationship burns out. A clap back to “Flowers” being a result of their recent recording e orts could ride the pop culture lightning Cyrus has surfed so well this year.

The album itself needs to be a move of the kind Mars has been making

since he was a pint-sized Michael Jackson impersonator. He came up through the music industry ranks as part of a production collective and introduced himself to the world at large in 2010 by being the featured vocalist on B.o.B’s No. 1 hit “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” in 2010.

Lyrics from the latter song’s chorus (“Oh, every time I close my eyes / I see my name in shining lights / A di erent city every night”) now seem like a prophecy that Mars proved true. His net worth is considerably short of 10 figures, but when he says, “I swear the world better prepare / For when I’m a billionaire,” the audience can believe he still means it.

Beyond concerts scheduled for Korea and the Philippines during the summer, Brazil and Chile come September, and his Vegas residency dates, Mars’ touring schedule is sparse. Witnesses to his 2023 concerts may get the first tastes of new material, but he does not appear to be gearing up for a promotional tour of a new album. You’ll have to buy a ticket to find out.

The second artist in Grammy history to win Record of the Year three times is going to make a lot of noise as he forges the next phase of his career. Meanwhile, fans who come to get down to “Uptown Funk” now know the drill: Bruno Mars makes them put their phones away, because dancing and devices don’t mix.

The world better prepare Bruno Mars drops his fourth solo album

Seal revisits his biggest hits at series of Venetian shows

Some songs transcend airplay and chart success to become emblematic of their respective eras. A select few of those become canonical, universally recognized as among the greatest tunes of all time. Seal has songs that fit both descriptions, with “Crazy” forever evoking the zeitgeist of the early ’90s and career-defi ning “Kiss from a Rose” gaining massive popular and critical acclaim in 1994 after getting a boost from Batman Forever

Seal is revisiting the two self-titled albums those songs came from on his current tour, for which he is joined by their producer Trevor Horn in the role of music director. Seal fans catching his back-to-back dates this weekend in Las Vegas can rejoice that their favorite works from Seal and Seal II will be delivered by an artist very much at the top of his performance game, while audiophiles with reverence for Horn’s history of audio excellence

may be astounded to fi nd the opening act is Horn’s seminal synth-pop band The Buggles.

That would be the band with the fi rst video broadcast on MTV for the prophetic song “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Horn would go on to cofound Art of Noise and perfect his groundbreaking approach to studio work and sampling as he built an extensive body of production work. By the time he met young rave enthusiast Seal, he was ready to apply his techniques to a decidedly pop music project.

Seal, meanwhile, had survived the school of hard knocks and had the idea for “Kiss from a Rose” when DJ/musician Adamski asked him to provide vocals to uplifting EDM track “Killer.” Seal had toured Europe and Asia by that time, developing a style seasoned with the art rock of David Bowie, the artistry of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye’s tone, Frank Sinatra’s phrasing and Stevie Wonder’s soul.

He had also developed a clear concept of his identity as a recording artist, which manifest in his “solitary brother” lyrical contribution to “Killer” that made the No. 1

U.K. hit unforgettable. It would be Horn who recognized Seal’s potential as a solo star though. In Horn, Seal found not only someone who wanted to hear him when he was a broke, struggling artist but also someone who knew exactly what to do with his voice.

The result was Seal, released in November 1990. It was the album everyone had in 1991 regardless of tastes. The songs served as dance or dinner music, good for getting lost in oneself during long drives or in someone else during long evenings. The lyrics were reassuring at a time of change when nothing seemed assured: “We’re never gonna survive/ Unless we get a little crazy.”

Seal II was a big hit as well but it wasn’t until “Kiss from a Rose” became the saving grace of box-o ce flop Batman Forever that it was exposed to a wide audience via the movie’s end credits and a music video featuring Seal backlit by the Bat Signal. Now, for a short time, he’s singing the song live with its producer personally creating its sonic setting.

David Blaine puts it all on the line at ‘In Spades’

The moment I saw all the cardboard boxes stacked up on the left side of the stage at David Blaine’s Resorts World Las Vegas show, In Spades, I knew it was going to be a memorable evening. And sure enough, once the show started, it only took a few minutes for my hands to begin sweating.

Blaine, the man who has made defying death a way of life, wasted no time in revealing what those

boxes were for. Suffice it to say, it’s certifiably insane (you might have heard the recent reports of Blaine injuring his shoulder at a recent show; this is the stunt that caused it).

But as staggering as this mini-performance was, it was only the beginning of the experience. Those who have seen all Blaine’s various feats of endurance on television (as well as his ground-

breaking magic specials, in which he travels the globe and blows the minds of people from all cultures and creeds) will have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this evening. And even for those who know what’s coming, Blaine doesn’t disappoint.

In Spades is a mix of everything Blaine is famous for. You will see him: Pierce various body parts,

always producing not a single drop of blood;

Venture into the audience with nothing but a deck of cards and have everyone gobsmacked within minutes;

Produce objects from his esophagus that do not seem physically possible; Break a long-standing physical endurance record, all while children are invited onstage during said

stunt to give him fist bumps and pose for selfies.

One of the best things about In Spades is the expressions on the faces of the volunteers Blaine brings onstage. As an audience

member blurted out, “You’re crazy, man!” And the audience laughed in agreement.

It’s all alternatively exhilarating and exhausting, and the show’s final act sees Blaine sitting on some stairs on the side of the stage, talking to the audience as he recovers from the toll the show takes on him. He fully admits that it’s a bit crazy to think the show can last for long—after all, the stunts he performs in just under two hours took him years to perfect, and are meant to be performed individually, not back-to-back.

In other words, see this show while you can. It’s quintessentially Vegas in its showmanship and its wow factor, and it’s one you’ll be telling all your friends about long after you’ve left the theater.

Blaine has been a polarizing figure throughout his career; some have said he’s a fraud, while others have questioned whether he truly puts himself at risk. But with In Spades, Blaine proves himself one of the top performers currently on the Strip. I saw the show weeks ago, and just remembering it, my palms begin to sweat again.
