You’ll notice something a bit ... different with this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine: Just like the Las Vegas Strip itself, our publication is almost all about the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix. Nearly every story and feature you are about to read is centered around the high-profile race (which is, at least for now, scheduled to be held in our city for the next nine years). We’ve explored every aspect of entertainment the race affects, including: • Shopping. Check out our F1-themed gift guide for that perfect accessory for your perfectly fashioned race look (“Gear Up for F1,” p. 34). • Dining. Wait until you see the celebrity chefs coming to town for F1 week—and how up close and personal you’ll be able to get with them at some of your favorite restaurants. (“Dining With the Stars,” p. 18). • Nightlife. Just like with dining, there’s so much star power coming to town this weekend to celebrate the occasion. Make sure to get your reservations in! (“Party Like a Race Star,” p. 17) • Special events. Drai’s Beachclub and Nightclub will be transformed into Vista Las Vegas during the race, where 13-time Grand Prix race winner David Coulthard will act as commentator. Check out our exclusive interview with the F1 legend (“The Voice of a Sport,” p. 12). There’s plenty more F1 fun in the following pages, but if you’re not in town for F1, fret not: We’ve still packed this week’s issue with plenty for you to do. For starters, we’ve got two separate guides to some of the best options outside of the racing area: Dining (“Take Your Time,” p. 28); and lounges and bars (“Sip and Savor,” p. 24). This week marks the beginning of a whole new era for Las Vegas. And however you choose to celebrate it, we’ve got you covered.

The Voice of a Sport Talking to F1 commentator David Coulthard about bringing an iconic race to the Las Vegas Strip Formula 1 Las Vegas’ takeover includes The Cromwell rooftop, where Drai’s Beachclub & Nightclub becomes the Vista Las Vegas viewing experience in association with the McLaren F1 racing team. With Mark Wahlberg on board to host and keep the bars well-stocked with his Flecha Azul Tequila, the center-Strip venue will be headquarters for F1 legend and contemporary commentator David Coulthard. Las Vegas Magazine’s Matt Kelemen checked in with the 13-time Grand Prix winner last month as he attended F1 in Austin. Where does Las Vegas fit in the Formula 1 universe right now? In a number of ways. It’s part of a longterm plan of Formula 1 and it’s an element of coming home or coming back, because we had a Grand Prix in Vegas many years ago (1982) in a car park at Caesars Palace. So it’s not a completely alien situation, having Grand Prix cars racing in Las Vegas. And arguably as one of the biggest entertainment cities synonymous with big sports events like boxing and the like, to have Formula 1 there makes sense. Is it part of a push into the States? Yeah, America has always been an
12 | 11.12.23 Las Vegas Magazine
important market for Formula 1 as a whole, but it has struggled historically to find a way into it. We had Vegas many years ago. There was Phoenix, then Austin obviously came up on the calendar several years ago and has really benefitted from the growth of Formula 1. … America is the size of Europe, and we have a lot of races in Europe. Who came up with the idea of racing on the Strip and around the city? I don’t know who the catalyst for that was but Liberty, an American company, bought Formula 1. I think they clearly have a much better understanding of an American audience. There are some great sports in America that are hugely popular around the world. You might have American football putting on exhibition matches in England or elsewhere, but it’s different than in the States. Formula 1 is a truly global championship, which continues year upon year. I’ve been involved in the sport 30 years, 15 as a driver and 15 now working in broadcasting. It puts you on a global stage. From what you know about the Vegas circuit, which established Grand Prix does it compare with?
Well, as far as being in a city filled with glamour and gambling, that would be Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo’s got a much longer history, and the royal family has ruled the principality for hundreds of years. … Putting a Grand Prix in the heart of a city, the whole town becomes part of the race.

This race is, notably, happening at night. Are there any other Grands Prix that happen at night? Yeah, there’s a few now. Abu Dhabi’s at night. Singapore. I guess the Middle East being so warm during the day, and also because for timing of our scheduling, the nights basically have
become more popular and work very well. The drivers are now used to racing under lights. Have you driven the Las Vegas circuit, mentally or physically? Do you have a good grasp of what it means for the drivers?
I’ve been to Vegas several times already because of being involved with the event in Drai’s Nightclub, where we’ve got a collaboration with McLaren that we’re calling Vista Las Vegas. So, yeah, I’ve been around it a few times, about as much as you could. I think they’ve done a pretty good job.

A Legend Lands
Revered steakhouse opens its doors on the Las Vegas Strip One of the most anticipated new restaurant openings in Las Vegas this year has to be Peter Luger Steak House. The brand started in Brooklyn in 1887, and that’s the vibe found in the Vegas location, with exposed brick, paneling, and wood floors and tables. The Forman family has owned the restaurant since the ’50s after buying it from the Luger family, and there are only four locations worldwide—including the new Vegas one. Although the menu is tightly curated, it may still present a bit of a challenge when ordering, as all the classic steakhouse dishes are represented. Apps include the jumbo lump crab cake, Caesar salad, jumbo shrimp salad and Maine lobster cocktail (with a half tail) and shellfish tower with lobster, crab, oysters and jumbo shrimp. Among the entrées you’ll find extra-large, double-thick lamb loin chops, grilled Atlantic salmon, whole broiled lobster and the highlight of the menu, house dry-aged prime beef in several sizes from Steak for One, Two, Three or Four to Ribeye for Two. Steakhouse favorites include Luger’s special German fried potatoes, sautéed broccoli and sautéed cremini mushrooms. And there are plenty of cocktails to indulge in before or after a meal. The restaurant was scheduled to hold its official grand opening on Nov. 10, with a host of stars and celebrities invited. If you didn’t score an invitation, try to get a reservation now—it’ll be easier than in New York, as there are 300 seats available in the Las Vegas outpost of Peter Luger Steak House. –Nina King

30 YEARS

30
Las Vegas, 1993 – It began with an audacious vision to grow “a flower in the desert.” 30 years later, that dream has blossomed into a globally renowned dynasty of entertainment that’s captivated more than 80 million spectators. This year, Cirque du Soleil celebrates several Vegas milestones: June marks the 10th anniversary of Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, October will witness the 25th year of “O” at Bellagio Resort & Casino, and in December, Mystère, the show that started it all, will commemorate an extraordinary 30 years. Prior to Cirque’s arrival, Las Vegas entertainment was known for its crooners, comedians, showgirls, and glitzy stars, but when Guy Laliberté, Gilles Ste. Croix, and Franco Dragone debuted Mystère at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in 1993, it marked a turning point for the entertainment capital of the world.
With more than 60,000 performances, perhaps the most impressive feat Cirque has pulled off is its staying power. In the high stakes landscape of Las Vegas entertainment, shows come and go, but Cirque has managed to do what countless others have not: keep the magic fresh. Whether it’s new acrobatics, refreshed musical scores, or a seemingly endless pipeline of elite performing artists, each resident show is in a constant state of creative evolution. “30 years is spectacular,” reflects Laliberté. “Yes, it’s a surprise, but also not, because in the creative process, we consider every element that could make a show live that long.” “We’re proud to have played a role in Las Vegas’ evolution to the city it is today,” says Eric Grilly, President of Resident Shows Division, “but like us, Las Vegas is always growing and changing, and we plan to continue to be a major part of all the future evolutions to come.”

Race away from the race! If you’re not into the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix festivities but still want to party with cocktail in hand, here’s a few of our fave suggestions. A few blocks away from the raceway on the Strip sits Tropicana Las Vegas, and the property houses an awesome drinking spot, Trago Lounge. It’s upscale, offers plenty of seating, low lighting, mood music and some of the best handcrafted cocktails.

Make your way over to Westgate Las Vegas and stop into the intimate bar area of Edge Steakhouse and have super-cool bartender Mike Thompson make a super-cool cocktail. (He’s a great conversationalist, too!) Up for some live jazz music? The newly opened Fat Cat at Downtown Grand welcomes guests into a laidback venue for some snazzy beats paired with some specialty cocktails. While downtown, head over to Circa
Resort & Casino and enjoy more cocktails at Vegas Vickie’s; be sure to snap some pics with one of the most-iconic neon signs in Las Vegas (pictured). About one mile away from downtown, if you’re headed back to the Strip, stop by the burgeoning Arts District. This is the place to bar crawl if you like that combination of dives-meets-hipster bars and lounges. Plus, the choice of food in the area is some of the best you’ll have in the city. –Kiko Miyasato

Focusing on the charitable aspect of a worldwide sport As race fans gear up for the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix festivities this week, we introduce you to a whole other side of the sport—its charitable endeavors and community outreach, including the Las Vegas Grand Prix Foundation. And leading the charge is Pilar Harris, senior director of corporate social responsibility, government relations and sustainability. “I build relationships with organizations within the community, charities, as well as local government officials to make sure that (F1’s) overall economic

impact that we’re bringing (is) felt all across the valley,” says the San Francisco native. “The sustainability work I consider to be a part of that, particularly the work we’re doing around water conservation,” she explains. “The thing that I wake up every morning to do for work is think about where we need to build stronger relationships, so that people really feel the positive impact of our presence.” Harris has a decade’s worth of experience in human rights and nonprofit advocacy, and has worked all around
the world. After spending a majority of her time in the public sector, last year she decided to bring her wealth of knowledge and experience to the private sector by joining F1. “I decided what I wanted to do was be able to make meaning and really help people, but from within the private sector,” she says. “So where I am now is really the sweet spot. I love that I get to introduce people to our world through my role. I get to do this incredible work, which is to create meaning out of a grand prix.” –Kiko Miyasato

during your stay. Well, when it comes to making dinner plans, Las Vegas Magazine has you covered! We’ve collected some of the best restaurants in town where your biggest concern won’t be getting there through the traffic; it’ll be whether you should have that second cocktail or not (and yes, you should—it’s Vegas!).

After enjoying an appetizer of jumbo shrimp cocktail, smoked bone marrow or a wagyu empanada, dig into either a wood-fired grill prime cut steak or a selection from the boutique wagyu collection. No wrong choices here.
Circa Resort & Casino, 702.726.5508 The great thing about this downtown Asian eatery is that it won’t break your budget. It’s the sister eatery to downtown’s wildly popular Le Thai, and its menu is packed with surprises. Wait until you try popcorn chicken skin, cumin lamb lollipops or musubi bites (Spam, furikake

rice, sesame aioli and shoyu glaze). You’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t order the honey toast (which uses brioche in this version) for dessert.
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, 702.693.5000 The ambience here is second to none—a beachy, Mediterranean vibe, including floor-to-ceiling windows. And the menu is full of delights, from branzino and rotisserie chicken diavola to pizzas and pastas. The housemade ice cream sandwich, with pistachio gelato, marshmallow and chocolate, is just heaven.
Westgate Las Vegas, 702.732.5276 You’ll feel like you’re in Tuscany as you enjoy the Italian classics like calamari, meatballs made with slow-braised beef,
pork and veal, and a bruschetta trio of fig mostardo, pistachio-marinated eggplant and tomato and basil pesto. By the time you get to main courses like chicken Parmesan and branzino (accompanied by sides like creamy polenta or rosemary-flavored roasted mushrooms), you may never want to leave.
Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.676.7000 There are several excellent dining options at this property, but this one truly stands out, as everything it serves is 100 percent vegan. The accomplishments here are staggering; you’ll swear you’re eating the real thing when you dig into the eggplant skirt steak or the caviar and chips. And you’ll want to check out the entire menu to experience the acrossthe-board excellence on display. Chef Tal Ronnen has truly outdone himself here.

Silverton Casino Lodge, 702.263.7777 Yes, it’s definitely off the beaten path, but well worth the trip! A favorite of locals and tourists alike, this welcoming environment is the perfect way to spend an evening while you enjoy appetizers like the grilled artichoke and smoked beef tartare or main courses like a 22-ounce cowboy ribeye, 28-ounce porterhouse or 16-ounce New York sirloin. In a cool twist, if you order the Creekstone Farms

The STRAT, 800.998.6337 This restaurant, which focuses on Chinese cuisine, has a décor designed around the idea of a Chinese alley restaurant, and since it’s right off the entrance to the property, the energy is nonstop. You’ll love hanging out here while enjoying leek

Golden Nugget, 702.386.8399 It’s easy to see why this downtown staple is one of the most-awarded restaurants in town. It pays the utmost attention to every detail, from décor and waitstaff to cocktails and desserts. Its steak menu highlights include an 8-ounce filet mignon, a 40-ounce tomahawk for the table, and A5 Kobe from the Hyogo prefecture.

Southpaw Shakur Stevenson is determined to rise to the top in a clash for a vacant title
44 | 11.12.23 Las Vegas Magazine
ph o es y u rt Co
It’s officially billed as a “World Championship Doubleheader,” in which the final bout features fighter-of-the-moment Shakur Stevenson and Edwin De Los Santos vying for the vacant WBC world lightweight title. If Stevenson prevails, he will be a three-weight champion, having won belts as a featherweight and junior lightweight/super featherweight. A win for De Los Santos enables him to bring a belt back to the Dominican Republic, as well as significantly increase his worth as a marquee fighter. Losing to De Los Santos, who has a slight reach advantage, is not an option if Stevenson wants to retain his high profile. De Los Santos, who has dubbed Stevenson “Shakira,” has the motivation of national pride spurring him on. Stevenson was essentially a lightweight by the time he defeated Conceição (17-2, 8 KOs), Brazil’s first Olympic gold medalist. Navarrete (38-1, 31 KOs) last defended his WBO junior lightweight world title against fellow Mexican Valdez. Between the two headlining fights, this one is surely going to be louder, with both fighters’ contingents of supporters from back home cheering on their 130-pound fighter and drowning each other out with volume.

FLASHBACK
A NEW BET ON VEGAS
Over the past 70-plus years, Formula 1 has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the U.S. Up until now, F1 has had dalliances with 11 different tracks—the most regular partners being GP stops at Austin, Texas and Watkins Glen, New York. And in the past two years, Miami. But it has flirted with more than a few peculiar U.S. locations, and none up until now has gone more strangely than Las Vegas. F1 visited Sin City in 1981 and 1982. And both times, the race was a championship decider. But despite high expectations and a location that seemed gaudily glamorous on paper, both showdowns were let down by the venue itself. In the end, there was no disguising that the world’s fastest cars were racing around the parking lot of the Caesars Palace hotel between concrete blocks. In 1981, the tight configuration caused drivers to suffer severe neck strain. We’re not talking minor discomfort. Title contender Nelson Piquet sought help from the masseur of then-welterweight world champ Sugar Ray Leonard. The massage failed to cure Piquet’s discomfort, and midway through the race the Brazilian vomited inside his helmet. Despite the stench, Piquet finished fifth to take the first of three world titles. The following year’s title battle proved to be something of a letdown, with Finland’s Keke Rosberg finishing fifth to clinch the title, having scored only a single win all season. For fans and teams, Vegas had failed to live up to its billing as the Monte Carlo of America. But at last, the city will get another chance this week to prove itself to a global audience when it hosts a nighttime GP on the neon-soaked Strip. We feel confident the end result will be historic (in a good way).

Expectations are justifiably sky-high for the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. But many people have forgotten about two ill-fated Formula 1 races here in the early 1980s. They were, in short, a huge bust.

Is it really any surprise that Las Vegas Grand Prix can put up some extravagant numbers? F1 has long taken risks, but now the sport has made a big bet—that a race in Vegas will push U.S. interest through the roof. Formula 1, bucking its model of selling hosting fees to promote the race, has sunk over $400 million to build a
home for the sport here. So of course there’s tons of hype. Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, called the race “the biggest event in the world in 2023.” Hyperbole aside, here’s how the numbers stack up.
