Hitting the town tonight? Stop by your concierge to pick up a copy of our sister publication, VEGAS2GO.
Sometimes it’s easy for full-time residents of Las Vegas to lose sight of exactly how amazing this city is. What we offer visitors on a daily basis—and what’s always available to us, 365 days a year—is always changing, always evolving, always improving. We here at Las Vegas Magazine, however, are fully aware of how much this city means to our millions of tourists. And we are always striving to pack this magazine full of some of the best options available each and every week. This week, live entertainment definitely takes the spotlight. We hope you planned for a show or two while here, because we’ve got plenty to choose from: Country music currently thrives in our town; we’ve got countless residencies, all of which sell out the house every night. One of the most exciting is Miranda Lambert’s Velvet Rodeo The Las Vegas Residency at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood (“Bluebird in Her Heart,” p. 32). Some music groups never go out of style: Their timeless sound ensures fans will come back again and again. No group encapsulates this better than Depeche Mode, which returns to T-Mobile Arena this week to offer up its enormous catalog of classics (“For the Masses,” p. 20). Comedy fans are no doubt well aware of Carrot Top, whose long-running show at Luxor turns 18 this year. And, as I discovered from attending a recent performance, he’s always tweaking and improving what is already one of the best shows on the Las Vegas Strip (“Nothing But Routine,” p. 42). For more laughs, head over to Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club, which is enjoying its new digs at MGM Grand (“Centrally Located Laughs,” p. 21). The guffaws are also in great supply at Blue Man Group at Luxor (“Silliness and Skill,” p. 14). Time to buy some tickets and experience what makes this city one of the best in the world.

Body Language Exciting burlesque show combines bawdiness with intriguing variety acts The line of people waiting to get into ROUGE curved all the way around the perimeter of The STRAT Theater’s lobby, extending into the retail area eight minutes before the scheduled start time. The self-identifying “sexiest show in Las Vegas” has attracted a diverse demographic on this evening, with a good many dressed in smart-casual evening wear. The queue moves quickly though, into a mid-size venue where cast members writhe sensually on twin platforms set amidst the VIP booths. Our emcee is Dr. Libido, a mustachioed steampunk sexpert in a top hat and red pinstripe pants who delivers raucous rhetoric with a Big Easy accent. His assistant is hyper-sexual Nurse Naughty, a Southern hellion who will team up with the good doctor to demonstrate formations rarely seen in public such as the “bald eagle.” Strength, agility and enthusiasm are amply demonstrated. There will be toplessness, but first a pair of platinum blonde aerialists engage in tandem strap act physicality that is both sensual and next level. Several acts demonstrate superhuman abilities, including a trio of well-muscled men who really know how to use their heads and form a human tower that almost reaches the ceiling.
12 | 11.26.23 Las Vegas Magazine
There is top-speed skating, spinning and quite a bit of bawdiness. There are gladiators, ballerinas and bare derrieres. There is Nina Simone’s version of “I Put a Spell on You.” There is a cast member with a passing resemblance to Jason Momoa. Eighteen performers in all will step onstage as Dr. Libido provides crowd-work interludes and finds out guests’ deepest, darkest secrets. This is a part of the show where one should expect the unexpected, free speech reigns, and descriptions of audience participation may not be appropriate for a family magazine. That said, ROUGE is more about celebrating the beauty of the human body than titillation. There is tease before toplessness, and both men and women are given equal time in the spotlights. Audience enthusiasm builds until hoots and hollers accompany every impressive move and motion. The enthusiasm tempts guests to take unauthorized images or video, but those urges should be resisted as the last five minutes are reserved for capturing content with Nurse Naughty’s consent. –Matt Kelemen The STRAT, 18+. tickets. thestrat.com

Silliness and Skill Hysterical headliners combine comedy and music in one fantastic show
It’s nonsensical. It’s weird. It’s sometimes even a little gross. But that’s what we love about Blue Man Group. The almost-extraterrestrial characters embody a sort of innocence that makes them lovable and, dare I say, cute. After all, who doesn’t adore three blue-painted men in black mocknecks that don’t speak as they curiously explore the mundane world around them? The trio of mute performers and a groovy band put on a show like no other. The music alone is lively and upbeat, featuring sounds made not only by traditional instruments, but with MacGyver-style sound makers that the eccentric cast playfully employ throughout the show. The lively room becomes filled with laughter when the Blue Men begin their shenanigans—throwing marshmallows to one another, using just their mouths and some gumballs to create brightly colored art, and sitting down to enjoy some Twinkies (in a slightly disturbing way) with a special guest plucked right from the audience. Trust us, you may never look at the beloved snack cake quite the same way again after this. Speaking of audience participation, be prepared to have a close encounter no matter where you sit as the crew does roam the entire theater, creating many opportunities for the crowd to become part of the madness. And if you dare come late, you’ll have your own special moment in the spotlight. For fans who just can’t get enough of the painted pals, worry not. When you buy your ticket, you can opt for a VIP experience that includes an in-show refreshment, a swag bag and a backstage tour. Once the last of the toilet paper falls (yes, you read that right), you’ll be whisked away to the very corridor where the Blue Men practice their percussion and warm up before the show. You’ll be able to peruse some of the show’s history, and a Blue Man or two may make an appearance while you’re there. Don’t forget to snap a picture and get your VIP lanyard “signed.” –Em Jurbala

Wheelie Cool
See the Las Vegas Strip from high in the sky
There are many ways to start off an evening in Las Vegas. Few compare to getting elevated via the High Roller observation wheel at The Linq Promenade, which should be on everyone’s short list for ways to experience sundown on the Strip. Daytime rides with 360-degree views of the Las Vegas Valley beneath azure blue desert skies contrast with the neon nighttime trip, providing incentive for making two visits to High Roller. Sundown rolls come increasingly

early as winter deepens, with plenty of time to make it to The Linq Promenade’s mid-Strip location before hitting a 7 p.m. show elsewhere. It’s also good timing to indulge in an aperitif, which can be obtained at a well-stocked bar after passing through a security check at the entrance. A Happy Half Hour can be reserved for up to 25 people in one cabin, with a personal bartender serving up libations during the 30-minute turn of the wheel.
There’s a feeling of contentment on the way down that remains upon exiting the High Roller and taking a promenade through The Linq Promenade. There’s a buzz of energy, live acoustic music coming from a bar, a slew of choices for dining, including one with bowling lanes. But a burger from In-N-Out may be the perfect way to conclude your High Roller experience. –Matt Kelemen The Linq Promenade, 702.322.0593

Many Happy Returns Classic steakhouse celebrates 40 years of quality Las Vegas is ever-evolving and creating new experiences, and while that’s incredibly exciting, it’s also reassuring to know that some things stay the same—and even thrive—in that atmosphere. One of those Las Vegas institutions turns 40 this year: The Steak House at Circus Circus, a restaurant that has not only outlasted so many others, but stays true to its roots, maintaining a classic menu that customers return to again and again. And again. The dining room itself is exactly what you’d picture in your mind if you’ve never been here (and if you haven’t, why not?): Perfectly appointed tables and leather booths, with a food preparation area right in the middle of the action. You can literally watch your meal being prepared if you so choose, but we’d highly recommend getting to business with the cocktail selection, which hits on the classics you’d associate with a prestigious destination like this: Old-Fashioneds, Manhattans, dirty martinis, you name it. One of the coolest aspects of The Steak House is just to your left as you enter past the reception area: A dry-aging locker with floor-to-
18 | 11.26.23 Las Vegas Magazine
ceiling windows, allowing you to check out all the cuts you’re about to choose from. All the beef within is Midwestern in origin and aged for 21 days at 37 degrees Fahrenheit. As you pore over your steak choices, be sure to sure to take advantage of the great starters available here. The crab cake is plenty for two and full of huge chunks of the crustacean, while the French onion soup has a healthy topping of Gruyère. And if you really want to go all out, order the Seafood Sensation, a healthy portion of oysters, crab and shrimp that will have the entire table buzzing. Now onto those classic cuts. Whether you choose the New York strip, porterhouse, filet mignon or ribeye on the bone, make sure to pair it with either a lobster tail or sautéed mushrooms. And if you’re not quite in a steak frame of mind, no problem—there’s plenty of surf among the turf, including Alaskan king crab legs, grilled garlic shrimp and salmon filet. For a real treat, opt for the lamb chops, so succulent and flavorful. –Ken Miller

For the Masses
Seminal band brings its electronic sound to the Strip
Depeche Mode had 20 Top 40 hits in the U.K. in the decade following its 1980 formation. What started out as a band of friends playing conventional instruments quickly became a synthpop phenomenon, then a pioneering industrial and darkwave act before getting lifted by the tidal wave of alternative music and riding it through the ’90s. And they’ve been filling arenas ever since. Now a duo consisting of vocalist David Gahan and song constructor Martin Gore, Depeche Mode reached a land-

mark since playing Las Vegas in March. “Never Let Me Down,” the second single preceding the release of 1987 album Music for the Masses has been played more than a thousand times in concert. “Personal Jesus” comes in second but will not reach that four-figure mark by the time the Memento Mori World Tour wraps in April. For Depeche Mode, 1987 was the year of one of the most career-changing of many turning points, although it had been a cult favorite in the U.S. before playing the Rose Bowl in Pasadena
while touring in support of Music for the Masses. Strangely, that album’s first single, “Strangelove,” has not been on setlists consistently but concerts have been kicking off with “My Cosmos Is Mine” and “Wagging Tongue” from Memento Mori. Expect tears to flow when “World in My Eyes” is dedicated to founding member Alan Fletcher, who passed away last year. –Matt Kelemen T-Mobile Arena, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1, starting at $49.50 plus tax and fee. axs.com

Centrally Located Laughs
Funnyman’s eponymous club has an ideal location There are few words more inviting to hotel guests than “dinner and a show.” And thanks to the new digs Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club moved into at MGM Grand, dinner and a show is a snap. Because the famed comedian’s iconic comedy club is now smack-dab in the heart of The District, it’s an easily walked distance from any restaurant you select in that area—Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House, International Smoke, Morimoto Las Vegas and Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak, to name a few. The club itself is a perfect setting for kicking back and relaxing for an hour and a half—when you’re not doubled over in laughter, that is. While you’re there, consider purchasing a hat personally signed by Garrett; 100% of the purchase price goes to charity, in this case Maximum Hope Foundation, which provides assistance to critically ill children and their families. As you plan your evening this week, here’s a special surprise: While Garrett does not always appear at his club, this week he does! You can catch the man himself, famous from not only TV’s Everybody Loves Raymond but countless voice-over work in animated movies and guest appearances in shows like Fargo, on Nov. 27. He’ll be joined by Gabriel Rutledge and Lenny Schmidt. On Nov. 28, Rutledge performs along with Schmidt and Ester Steinberg. –Ken Miller

From island life to the Las Vegas Strip The 1988 movie Cocktail inspired many a burgeoning bartender, including Stephen Roehm, assistant general manager and beverage director for Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops. After bartending for a short while in San Diego while he was attending college, “Somewhere along the way I saw the movie Cocktail and was like, ‘I want to do that!’ he said. “So, I moved to St. Thomas and bartended for two-and-ahalf years.” After getting island fever, he said, he moved to Las Vegas in 2006. years, he split his resume between bartending and managing at various spots on the off the Strip and, nine years ago, he joined Cabo Wabo Cantina. “Now I help build the cocktail menu, keep up on the latest cocktail and spirits trends, work with pricing for products and vendors, and assist our managers out on the floor,” Roehm said. After so many years with the bar and restaurant, Roehm still loves his job, he said. “I love the people I work with. I love that I meet people from all over the world. I love that I’m never stuck in
an office and cubicle. It’s just fun and changes every single day. We’re on the Las Vegas Strip and we’re a bar and restaurant owned by a rock star!” The rock star that Roehm is referring to is Sammy Hagar, and guests of Cabo Wabo Cantina can pick up on the Red Rocker’s vibe the moment you step through the doors. “Margaritas are our backbone,” Roehm said. “Sammy said that killer margaritas were going to be the standard of Cabo Wabo.” And they are—we dare you to find a recipe you don’t like! –Kiko Miyasato

Bar Zazu’s art and menu make for a fun-filled meal By Nina King

When you first enter Bar Zazu, you may appreciate the cozy bar, lush booths and intimate tables arranged around the dining area. But it’s only when you’ve sat for a bit, sipping a drink and waiting for the first of the dishes coming from the kitchen of the Resorts World Las Vegas tapas bar, that something else strikes you. It’s the art. There’s definitely something different about the whimsical,
food-oriented canvases hung about the room. Now what could it be? Could it be that the subjects are melting, and moving out of their frames as others swim into view? It’s hard to tear your eyes away, but once you do, focusing on the meal is easy. Perhaps that drink on your table is the Isabella, with Lunazul tequila blanco, Aperol, lime, passionfruit and mole spice, or the Sophia, with

the globe stocked here), plus beer and a variety of spirits. And sangria! What’s a tapas restaurant without a glass of sangria? Get it in two varieties. Start your meal with cheese—boards are available in three sizes, with a few choices. Apricot mostardo, spiced marcona almonds and pickled vegetables accompany chorizo, coppa, Mahon, manchego and more. Ceviche, burrata bruschetta, roasted beets and chickpea hummus with veggies and pita for dipping are just a few good choices. Lollipop wings create a photo-worthy dish, as does the bone marrow. Choose a pizza to share while waiting for main dishes—the margherita is a solid option, but a chorizo and goat cheese version with kalamata olives and red onions pique your taste buds in ways you hadn’t imagined before. For a larger portion, try seafood paella with creamy rice and Spanish shrimp, clams, mussels and bay scallops, or a half confit chicken, with lemon and garam masala adding a flavor boost. The Zazu burger, constructed with brisket, also pulls in strong flavors with the addition of gorgonzola mascarpone. And ordering patatas brava with your skirt steak makes for a smart move. A virtual must-order in a tapas restaurant (and certainly any we are seated in), the layered potatoes are accented here with saffron aioli.

Nevada is well-known for its unique and storied history, but its prehistoric inhabitants are only recently coming into focus for paleontologists. At Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Experience at Horseshoe, guests can learn about the state’s oldest residents and catch a glimpse into their primordial world. MEETING NEVADADROMEUS Bones of the Nevadadromeus were first discovered near the Valley of Fire State Park, only 45 minutes from Las Vegas, in 2008 and formally published in 2022. A new genus and species of thescelosaurine, Nevadadromeus was a small, bipedal, plant-eating dinosaur with a beak and long, slender hind legs. It is the only named species of dinosaur from Nevada and its name honors it. The first half of its name references the state, and the second half refers to its long hind legs, making it swift and agile. Small herbivores needed this trait as it allowed them to escape larger dinosaurian predators. OTHER DINOSAURS CONNECTED TO NEVADA While not named for their home state, there are several other dinosaurs that were discovered in or believed to roam Nevada. Here are six of those dinosaurs that are featured at Dino Safari with connections to the Silver State. HADROSAUR: Like Nevadadromeus, this dinosaur was also discovered in 2008 in the Valley of Fire State Park by a group of UNLV students who had been hiking through. While stopping for lunch, the group noticed a dinosaur skeleton jutting from nearby rocks. The formal name of this dinosaur will be announced soon but is a new

During its 53-year history, the International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas hosted some of entertainment’s biggest stars By Kiko Miyasato Photography courtesy of Westgate Las Vegas archives
the International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas was built with a strong foundation and reinforced by history-making entertainment that spanned generations. It set the stage for what the Las Vegas entertainment landscape is today. Its tale is packed with some of the biggest names in music, theater, comedy and more, and while the resort has changed owners and names in its 50-plus years, today Westgate Las Vegas has restored the venue to its former glory.
In 1967, entrepreneur and businessman Kirk Kerkorian, then known as the landlord of Caesars Palace, purchased more than 60 acres off-Strip along Paradise Road and built the world’s largest resort at the time—the International Hotel. After purchasing the land for $5 million, he spent more than $50 million erecting one of the city’s first mega-resorts, which stood 30 stories high and housed more than 1,500 rooms. (Today, with the expansion of the hotel over the years, the Westgate Las Vegas now houses nearly 3,000 rooms, along with convention space and the world’s largest sportsbook). On July 2, 1969, the International Hotel opened its doors to celebrities and tourists and locals alike, with singer Barbra Streisand performing inside
the International Theater, then called Showroom Internationale. The showroom on opening night was packed with stars like Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth, Rudolf Nureyev, Andy Williams and owner Kerkorian. Streisand, just coming off her Academy Award win for Best Actress in Funny Girl earlier that year, was signed to a four-week engagement and played a stripped-down show that at first received lukewarm reviews (some press said her show was more suitable for a cabaret-style setting, not a large, luxurious theater like the Internationale), but toward the end garnered praise, wowing audiences with hits like “People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade.” Although her star power brought in the crowds and laid the foundation for future programming, the next star to take up residence inside the International Theater would make the biggest impact, not only for the property but for the history of Las Vegas entertainment.
Literally the day after Streisand ended her run inside the International Theater, posters, banners and merchandise were plastered across the hotel’s property with the face of Elvis Presley—even the cocktail servers sported buttons on their lapels promot-
ing his new residency. On July 31, 1969, Elvis stepped onto the International Theater stage to perform live, for the first time in years, in front of the celebrity-packed house. “Vernon (Presley), my mother, Priscilla, Lisa and my two brothers and me were in

a booth,” David Stanley, Elvis’ stepbrother, told Las Vegas Magazine this year. “Elvis walked out on that stage and, ‘Oh my!’ He hadn’t done a concert in nine years, and he came out that night inside this historical theater

and man, that was it. I thought, ‘My god, this guy!’ I went up to him and I said, ‘Elvis, that was unbelievable.’ And he said, ‘David, I’ve been wrong for so long, but I was right tonight.’”
And boy oh boy, was Elvis so right. His star power, his heartthrob status and the glowing reviews of his show kept him performing seven years for a total of 636 record-breaking, sold-out performances. And there every night was Stanley, who eventually dropped out of high school to join Elvis’ security team and entourage, known as the Memphis Mafia, during his theater tenure—two shows per night, for 30 days straight, for two months out of the year, until Elvis’ death in 1977. “The first night he was here, it was like a prize fight,” Stanley said. “Everyone was all excited. He hadn’t done any concerts in nine years. He’d done movies. So everyone was anticipating. That was the era of The Stones and The Beatles—Elvis was a ’50s cat. All of a sudden there was this new breed of music, so was Elvis still the King? Anybody who was anybody was here. And the thing about an Elvis concert—when Elvis comes out onstage, the electricity just took the paint off the wall. The magnetism and the charisma—it was like, ‘God almighty!’ “He did that from 1969 to the day he died. Every time he would walk out on that stage, the crowds would go insane. From the day he started to the time he died, there was not an empty seat in this theater. He would come out onstage and girls and women would rush the stage— every show. It was insanity.” During his run, Elvis lived on the 30th floor and Stanley recalled those nights after each concert. “Downstairs was the dressing room, and he’d go and change, and then come out and hobnob with the celebrities. Depending on how he felt, he’d invite them up to the suite and take the back elevator up there, 30th floor, and they’d go till 4 or 5 in the morning. Elvis wasn’t a big partier, though. Elvis’ idea of a good time was to go to the suite and sing gospel music. He didn’t drink. He didn’t smoke pot. … He left so much of his
soul on that stage. He gave so much of himself. Elvis left a mark.” Another man that has left his mark inside the historic venue, and in September broke Elvis’ record for number of shows inside the International Theater, is Barry Manilow. The singer-songwriter first signed a contract with the theater in 2005 and, with some breaks away from the theater through the years, to this day continues to perform inside the International Theater, with his show The Hits Come Home. “When Barry Manilow came in, in 2005, we completely remodeled the stage for his show,” said International Theater head stage carpenter Craig Hayes, who has worked at the theater for 29 years. “I love Barry Manilow. He is a perfectionist. He’s very picky. He videos every show and watches it every night to see if there’s anything he wants to make better or change for the next show. That’s the consummate performer—wanting to do the perfect show.”

On top of Elvis’ and Manilow’s history-making residencies, The International Theater has been home to many other stars in its 53-year history. When it comes to concerts, it’s a who’s who of world-renowned performers, including Hall & Oates, Donna Summer, Kenny Rogers, Keith Urban, Smokey Robinson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Liza Minnelli, Burt Bacharach, Earth, Wind & Fire, Johnny Cash, Heart, B.B. King, The Righteous Brothers, Charo, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Paul Anka, James Brown, Brooks & Dunn, Wayne Newton, and
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Another Vegas legend, Liberace, held court inside the International Theater beginning in 1972 until the early 1980s. At the time, Liberace’s salary was one of the highest, close to $200,000 per week. His show was a spectacle, with flashy, flamboyant outfits and his arrival onstage by way of a Rolls-Royce. The 2013 HBO movie Behind the Candelabra re-creates Liberace’s famous performances, and the movie was in fact filmed inside the actual International Theater, which was staged to appear as
Las Vegas Magazine 11.26.23 | 39
it did back when the superstar performed there. “I got to watch Liberace a few times when my dad worked there,” said Hayes, whose father worked at the International Theater when it opened. “Liberace knew how to entertain. He’d walk out there and he’d play for a while, and then he’d walk off and get changed into something more fabulous. He’d say, ‘I’m going to change into something more fabulous!’—and it’d be more fabulous. He was amazing; watching him play, he’d have the audience mesmerized. He’d say stuff like, ‘People always ask me how I play with all these rings on my fingers and I say, ‘I play very well, thank you.’”
40 | 11.26.23 Las Vegas Magazine
When it comes to comedy, the giants of the industry also graced the theater’s stage, including Redd Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Engvall, Paul Rodriguez, Doug Henning, Andrew Dice Clay, Bill Maher, Eddie Griffin, Ron White, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez and Steve Harvey. In 1993, the International Theater underwent its biggest renovation to date, more than $10 million, to accommodate its first big theatrical production, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Starlight Express. The abridged version ran for 90 minutes, received a Vegas-glitzed revamp and featured a cast that famously performed the entire show on roller skates.
Starlight Express was another score for the International Theater in that it was one of the first big musical productions to have a permanent home on a Las Vegas stage and run every week over five years, thereby setting the standard of craftsmanship and big-budget spectacle for the production shows you see on the Strip today. The theater also appeared in homes all across the country by way of television, staging everything from the Mrs. America Beauty and Mrs. World Beauty pageants to the ESPY, BET and Victor awards shows and games shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! and The $250,000 Game Show Spectacular.
“I get paid to work with some of the best acts, and when each show is over, I get to look out at the audience and see people smiling because they just had a great time,” Hayes said. “I have the best job around. The early days of Vegas, people used to show up to the theater in suits, ties and evening gowns. Now it’s T-shirts and flip-flops, but they’re all coming to see a show, to be entertained. “When the International opened, it was the biggest showroom in Las Vegas,” Hayes added. “Most other showrooms could fit between 800-1,000 seats; when the International opened, it could put 2,000 people in there; that’s almost double. And when Elvis played in there, they’d fit 2,000 people in there twice a
night for a straight two months out of the year, for years.” When Stanley thinks back about his time inside the International Theater, those thoughts are about Elvis, his brother. “I grew up in this building,” he said, looking around the theater. “I feel Elvis right now, being in this theater.” Fans of Elvis can join Stanley, who serves as an ambassador for Westgate Las Vegas, once a month inside the International Theater for the My Brother Elvis experience (the next one is Dec. 13). The intimate experience includes a backstage tour of the theater and Elvis’ personal dressing room and a sit-down Q&A with Stanley, who will also recount his and Elvis’ time in Las Vegas during the King’s historic run. Gordon Prouty, vice president of pubic and community relations for Westgate Las Vegas, recounted the International
Theater’s impact on the city’s entertainment landscape. “When the theater opened it was this incredible experience,” he said. “It was old Vegas glamour. The only people bigger than the ones on the stage were the people that showed up to watch the concerts. Everyone would come to see a show in this theater. The entertainment and names in the theater itself really set the bar for Las Vegas entertainment you see today. “We’re really building on the legacy of the International Theater and expanding on the overall legacy of the shows that were established over the decades,” Prouty added. “The theater in so many ways parallels the history of Las Vegas.” Today, the International Theater continues its success of leading the pack for memorable moments in entertainment and no doubt has many more chapters in its tale left to be written.

FEW COMEDIANS in the history of the genre have quite so much material that pertains to them—and them alone—as Carrot Top. The now-iconic Strip performer, who celebrates 18 years at his current property, the pyramid-shaped Luxor, has been the butt of many a pop-culture ribbing over the decades. And to that, Carrot Top says a big “Thank you!” Because not only has he embraced this mindset, he uses it to great effect. His current show, which is markedly different than years past, features a much more personal Carrot Top than you’re used to. Yes, he spends some time showing us the various ways his name has been taken in vain on TV (Family Feud, cable
news and more), but he also spends plenty of time talking about all the wonderful fans he’s interacted with over the years (in elevators, in lines to get beer at concerts, on airplanes, you name it), all of it with a hilarious bent regarding his appearance, and who some people have mistaken him for. And while prop comedy made him famous on shows like Star Search, Carrot Top relies on it less in this newest iteration. Don’t worry—there is definitely comedy of the prop variety present and accounted for (You’ll barely be able to contain yourself when seeing Hugh Hefner’s walker or the application to work at Hooters). But while he starts the show with these priceless playthings, he

quickly moves onto supplemental material that proves two things: 1. No one laughs more at the mocking of Carrot Top than the ginger-haired one himself; and 2. Carrot Top does not need props to make you laugh. He’s a seriously hysterical stand-up comedian in his own right. He tackles a bit of everything here, from COVID vaccines to Trump and Biden. He’s got a particularly hilarious bit about the “subtle” differences between NASCAR and Formula 1, why his favorite property name on the Strip is The Jockey Club (Hint: It’s not what you think), and why the rooms at Luxor are so hard for the maids to clean (Hint: It’s exactly what you think). Carrot Top also shares some particularly touching memories regarding his father, a rocket scientist, who took him to see Gallagher (the comedian who gained fame by smashing watermelons as part of every show) for the first time, and how Gallagher inspired the young Scott Thompson to pursue a career in making people laugh. It leads to a truly touching tribute to Gallagher at the end of the show. And, with this being his 18th year of laughter at Luxor, Carrot Top also makes it a priority to thank his audiences throughout the years, humorously reminding those same fans that he has yet to top USA Today’s best Las Vegas shows (he finished fifth, as he makes sure to remind everyone) and that he finished third in a “Best of Vegas” list by the local newspaper (“Bronze,” as he puts it). But here’s the only number Carrot Top cares about: 10,000. It’s the number of performances he’s about to hit in Las Vegas. Take that, pop culture!
