What’s your new year’s resolution? It’s a question we all hear year after year, and while for some of us it usually involves dropping a bad habit (or a few unwanted pounds), for others it’s a time of reflection, of making wish lists for things we always say we’re going to do but, for whatever reason, we never do. Hopefully for a few of you this year, that resolution revolved around a visit to Las Vegas, a city that has never been more exciting. Not only did we just finish up with Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix, we’re about to host our first-ever Super Bowl. If you’re planning a trip here (or if you’re already here), Las Vegas Magazine is ready to help you get the most out of your precious time. And if it’s your first time here, all the better! If you’re looking for the best in scintillating Las Vegas entertainment, we’ve got three unforgettable options featured in this issue: Criss Angel MINDFREAK at Planet Hollywood (“Mixed Magical Arts,” p. 34), Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease at Luxor (“A Spicy Spark,” p. 32), and Kylie Minogue at The Venetian (“Making Her Mark (Again),” p. 36). If comedy is your jam, make sure to snag some tickets to viral sensation Atsuko Okatsuka at The Mirage (“Comedy Moves,” p. 12). And if you’re an EDM fan, it doesn’t get better than Kaskade, who spins at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Katch the Superstar,” p. 17). Are you a fan of horoscopes? If so, you won’t want to miss the introduction of a new feature to Las Vegas Magazine: “What’s Your Sign?” (p. 38), which provides nightlife options for each sign of the zodiac. Elsewhere, we’ll guide you to great dining options at Downtown Grand (“Changing the Beat,” p. 28), as well as a cool new speakeasy at MGM Grand, Chez Bippy (“Hey, You. Have a Cocktail,” p. 24). Here’s to a great 2024!

Comedy Moves

Viral sensation, with the help of her grandmother, brings fish-out-of-water experiences to the Vegas stage How people pronounce her name in English is the least of Atsuko Okatsuka’s concerns. It’s AHT-sko o-KATS-ka, or close to that, but mention “#thedropchallenge comedian” to any of the millions of witnesses and copycats of her TikTok videos and the kinetic comic with the trademark bowl cut of jet-black hair will come to mind. Stand-up fans know her for her animated stage presence and material that draws on an unorthodox upbringing and fish-out-of-water experiences. Okatsuka’s grandmother, who is either 90 or about to be, is her deadpan co-star in social media videos that depict the pair lip-syncing to Lil Jon as they enter a grocery store or Okatsuka bumping produce into her cart. She’s also been the source of much material during Okatsuka’s nearly 15-year career that crested in 2022 when her special The Intruder debuted on HBO. Structured around a real-life encounter with a trespasser at the Silver Lake home she and her husband rented, Okatsuka dives deep into the culture shock she experienced as an adolescent arriving in the U.S. from Japan and living undocumented in L.A. for seven years. Born in Taiwan, she was brought to the States and raised to adulthood by her Mandarin-speaking grandmother. She also went to church, where

12 | 1.14.24 Las Vegas Magazine

watching a Margaret Cho video changed her life. Okatsuka found that her autobiographical experiences and being forced to assimilate with a variety of social groups gave her an original perspective and background to mine material from. Watching Scooby-Doo cartoons, developing an appreciation for Lucille Ball and Charlie Chaplin, and cheerleading in school led to her comedy having a physical edge. There aren’t many comedians who dance their way onto the stage, or create viral phenomena. Okatsuka’s stop-anddrop dance interpretation of a descending beat from Beyoncé’s “Partition” has been paid homage to with tribute videos by an inestimable number of people around the world. #thedropchallenge can happen anywhere, at any time, especially in the workplace. It would not have been possible had Grandma not essentially kidnapped Okatsuka in hopes of providing her with a happier future (as Okatsuka related in a touching episode of This American Life). Now Grandma lives comfortably as Okatsuka provides comic relief for the masses, enhanced by a dance move or two. –Matt Kelemen The Mirage, 10 p.m. Jan. 20, starting at $35 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster

Not So Secret

This Strip headlining magician has no problem showing you what’s up his sleeve The amount of times young people have asked Mac King how to get started in the craft of magic, after seeing one of his afternoon performances of The Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Excalibur is inestimable (and he can’t answer them comprehensively in 30 seconds of meet-and-greet). King himself was literally grandfathered in, with both of his grandfathers having magical skills. “They knew some tricks, and my mom’s dad, in particular, had some magic books at his house,” says King in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine. Both grandfathers were in sales and traveled for work. “They used magic as icebreakers to meet people or make themselves look interesting.” If King had to identify one trick as ground zero for his interest, it would be his dad’s dad breaking a match, then “reconstructing” it beneath a handkerchief. It was also the first trick King learned step-by-step, which fully ignited his passion. King cites the benefits of learning magic such as sharpened focus and problem-solving skills. Practice improves muscle memory, while performing builds confidence in public speaking. Ultimately, it led King to a career and meeting his future wife. While King would never give away another magician’s secrets, his own history of disclosures dates back to the ’90s, when he appeared on television specials for NBC titled The World’s Greatest Magic. King performed tricks before commercial breaks, then demonstrated how they worked when he returned. “Magicians kind of divide the way they talk about magic into effect—that’s what the trick looks like to the audience—and the method. That’s the secret stuff that leads to the effect,” says King, before categorizing effects. “There’s vanish. There’s change. Mutilated and restored. There’s levitation. Any of those effects you can do with a deck of cards.” King doesn’t mind his tricks winding up in the public domain—his skills of making goldfish and Fig Newtons appear to remain unsurpassed. –Matt Kelemen

Katch the Superstar EDM DJ plays Vegas this weekend

At Coachella 2015, Kaskade accomplished an amazing feat. Not only was he the first EDM DJ to make his way to the headliner stage in the festival’s history, but the Chicago native also drew a larger crowd than any other artist performing that year. It was a seminal moment for dance music and a testament to Kaskade’s musical talents, which he turned into a career more than two decades ago in San Francisco. Back then he was Ryan Gary Raddon until he figured out the DJ thing could be his path to success.

Courtesy photo

After a couple years of gigs at various clubs around the city and producing music for house music Om Records, Raddon, now 52, became Kaskade and would go on to be a Grammy-nominated artist many times over, as well as one of the most in-demand, highest-paid DJs in the world. With nearly a dozen albums under his belt, Kaskade’s most recent musical efforts found him collaborating with EDM powerhouse Deadmau5, together releasing 2023 album Kx5 with lead single “Escape” reaching the No. 11 spot on Billboard’s

dance/electronic songs chart. In November, he released a Christmas album, Kaskade Christmas Volume 2. No stranger to live performances, Kaskade has been a fixture on the Vegas nightlife and daylife scene for many years and last year he signed with Zouk Nightclub. Kaskade is on the roster again for 2024, with a performance at Zouk this Saturday, Jan. 19. –Kiko Miyasato Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.676.7000

Prime Selections

Indulge at this high-end hot spot with a gem hidden inside Do you think Las Vegas was better when the mob ran things? If so, you’ll probably want to check out one of the Strip’s premium steakhouses, one that pays homage to two of the city’s most (in)famous figures who helped shape it into what it is today: Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, named for Bugsy Siegel (of Flamingo fame) and Meyer Lansky. Everything here is in honor of that bygone era, from the “entrance,” which re-creates the faux bakeries mobsters used to enter restaurants, to The Count Room, a “speakeasy” that features world-class cocktails. Appetizers are all wonderful. The premium seafood tower with Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab, poached shrimp and East and West Coast oyster selections can be prepared for either two or four diners. The handcut prime beef tartare is served with truffle crème fraîche, sous vide egg yolk and pan-toasted country bread, while the crab cake is prepared with jumbo lump crab, Meyer lemon emulsion, piquillo pepper aioli and crispy shallots. After enjoying steakhouse classics like 17th century onion soup (loooove that Gruyère!), shrimp cocktail and a Caesar salad to start, it’s time to dig into the main courses, and the selection here is as varied and tempt-

ing as you’d expect in a high-end Strip steakhouse. When choosing a steak, select from either wet-aged (for a minimum of 21 days) or dry-aged (60 days). Then get ready for some of the best meat ever, from a 20-ounce bone-in ribeye and 18-ounce bone-in New York cut to a 32-ounce tomahawk ribeye—and for some real enhancement, drizzle on a variety of sauces, from bearnaise and hollandaise to creamy horseradish and bordelaise. Not a huge turf fan? There’s plenty of surf on this menu, from pan-seared Scottish salmon (served with haricots verts and yellow pepper coulis), seared diver scallops (served with fire-roasted corn, white bean purée and enoki mushrooms) and Chilean sea bass (served with cauliflower espuma, sautéed garlic broccolini and fried leeks). Desserts include Bugsy’s Banana Cake, made with peanut butter mousse, mascarpone Chantilly cream and warm banana caramel sauce, and the Chocolate Cigar Cake, which features old-fashioned chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, milk chocolate whipped ganache and salted caramel drizzle. –Ken Miller

Hitting the High Notes Singer continues band’s power balladry

Steelheart rode the tail end of the glam metal comet that soared above the ’80s music scene before grunge and hip-hop beats eclipsed teased hair and lead guitar pyrotechnics. It wasn’t changing tastes in sound that ended the first phase of the band’s career as much as an onstage accident in 1992 that left lead singer Miljenko Matijevic with multiple injuries and an extended recovery period (although he did recover and rejoined the band). By that time, Steelheart had made its contribution to power ballad history

20 | 1.14.24 Las Vegas Magazine

with “I’ll Never Let You Go,” which showcased Matijevic’s soaring tenor. The song was part of a wave of radio friendly hits by contemporaries such as Slaughter and FireHouse, but its success would not have been possible if Matijevic’s family hadn’t left their native Croatia when he was 6 years old. By age 11, he knew he was going to be a singer. Five years later, he formed a band in Connecticut with guitarist Chris Risola and bassist James Ward that would become Red Alert. A move to L.A. and a name change led to a record

deal and a self-titled debut album that begat “I’ll Never Let You Go,” as well as the singles “Everybody Loves Eileen” and “She’s Gone.” Risola is gone, but Ward is part of the current lineup. Meanwhile, Matijevic can still hit those high notes with a voice he applied to Steelheart’s most recent release, “The Christmas Song.” –Matt Kelemen

No Holds Barred

Have a laugh at everyone’s expense at this irreverent show Easily offended? Think that comedy should have some restrictions when it comes to the punchlines? Do you consider yourself “woke”? Then three-man comedy show Jew Man Group might get you worked up, as one of the first lines you’ll hear when the show starts is this is the place “where woke comes to die.” Indeed, the comedy show, inspired by Jewish comics like Mel Brooks, Rodney Dangerfield and Billy Crystal, pushes the envelope in content, but what’s unexpected is that the experience rings too

true at times and gets one agreeing that comedy really should be a no-holdsbarred take on society. The 70-minute show gives a one-two punch on today’s headline-making politics and combines it with hysterical commentary on everyday life including marriage, sex, kids and work. The stand-up is mixed with ventriloquism, skits, impersonations, musical parodies and audience participation. The three comedians—Rick Michel, Rich Natole and Joel Leder—each possess biting wit and impeccable comedic timing,

and each get their moment to shine solo in the spotlight, but it’s a laugh riot when the three join up for the group bits. The throwback comedy comes from a time when race, religion, sexual and political preference, and economic and social status was ripe for the comedic picking—so come with an open mind and remember: The show is all in good (and funny) fun! –Kiko Miyasato Tuscany Suites & Casino, 18+. jewmangroup.com

Hey, You. Have a Cocktail New speakeasy inspired by classic Bronx-based movie

If the name sounds familiar then you might be a fan of the classic 1993 movie A Bronx Tale. In the movie, Chez Bippy was the bar that the gang frequented; this iteration is MGM Grand’s newest drinking and lounging hot spot. But just as the bar in the movie was easily spotted on the corner of the Bronx neighborhood, this bar is a little harder to find, hence its speakeasy status. Look for the property’s newest Italian American restaurant, Luchini. The restaurant from Las Vegas nightlife and dining juggernaut The Tao Group is a “restaurant reminiscent of classic red sauce joints found throughout New York City.” Attached to the restaurant is the slice shop, a pizza-by-the-slice, quick-service counter where you can grab a slice to go or sit down at one of the few tables in the back. While you’re sitting in the back, see if you notice three candy vending machines. Behind one of the machines is the secret, Chez Bippy. One of the machines pushes back to reveal red curtains—and through the curtains is the in-the-know, beautiful, bougie speakeasy. This intimate

space houses just a few tables and sofa seating, and a few seats at the bar. The low lighting, marble-topped tables, luxurious fabrics and accessories add to Chez Bippy’s glamour. This is a perfect spot to dress up and sip in style.

The focus at this speakeasy is the specialty cocktails—elevated, impressive presentations that are twists on classic libations that implement Italian-inspired flavors. Begin with the Fellini, inspired by

director Federico Fellini. “The wafting smoke is evocative of Fellini’s ethereal, mystical films he’s known for making,” said Jan Padiernos, director of beverage for Tao Group and the creator of Chez Bippy’s cocktail menu. “This cocktail is a sweet and savory take on the classic Boulevardier cocktail.” It’s a mix of Bulleit bourbon, Campari, Barolo Chinato Cocchi and vanilla-anise tincture that is topped with a pizzelle, a classic Italian cookie. As it is presented tableside, the cocktail’s cover is lifted to reveal a waft of hickory smoke with a hint of cinnamon. Fans of martinis should order the Martini Classico. The classic cocktail highlights the flavors of Italy with a mix

Bella Notte

of Absolut Elyx vodka that has been infused with pepperoncinis and then mixed with Dolin dry vermouth and a Castelvetrano olive and caper brine. The cocktail is then served with pepperoncinis, olives and fresh mozzarella

on the side. A carafe holds the cocktail and rests on ice to keep it chilled until it is finished. The Bella Notte is the perfect closure to the evening at Chez Bippy. “It’s an affogato meets an espresso martini,” Padiernos said. “It’s a satisfying conclusion to a beautiful evening, hence the name Bella Notte.” The sweet, delicious mix of Belvedere vodka, Licor 43, Borghetti coffee liqueur, Frangelico and freshly brewed espresso is poured over a scoop of vanilla gelato. “When you come into Chez Bippy you’re coming into a transformative experience,” Padiernos said. “We have very skilled bartenders equipped to make anything, even off menu. Of course, we’d like guests to enjoy the cocktail menu that we’ve curated for them, but our team is very talented, and they like to express their creativity with cocktails.” –Kiko Miyasato

One sip of this sweet, slightly spicy specialty cocktail and you’ll understand why it’s been a guest favorite at The Still for a while now. The Golden Boy is a mix of Casamigos blanco tequila, passion fruit purée, muddled Fresno chilis, lime juice and agave. It’s served with a cinnamon sugar rim. –KM

Operations manager looks toward a bright future Keep your eyes on Rose Cahatol, because she’s making moves. Her 10-year plan? Opening a local Filipino American fusion restaurant. She anticipates using her background in the food and beverage industry to run the restaurant one day. Cahatol is currently the operations manager for The Still at The Mirage. Before her current job, she got into the industry as a server and then moved into bartending, where she worked for seven years at local spots. In early 2023 she got on the man-

agement track, and now she runs day-today operations at The Still. “I make sure the experience that we curate for the guests is a positive one,” she says. “I think that one of my strengths is that I was front of house not that long ago, so I know what it feels like to be in the weeds and need help.” Cahatol loves her current position and enjoys introducing people to The Still and welcoming back returning guests. “We’re an elevated sports bar,” she says. “We’re the ultimate man cave. We have 27 TVs.

We have upwards of 50 craft beers. We have local drafts, too. We show all the sports—March Madness, Super Bowl, UFC. You can watch sports anywhere, but I feel we have the best environment. The staff is super friendly—nice, personable people. I feel like we curate a very fun vibe.” It’s her experience and hard work in promoting the popular environment at The Still that will help aid her in opening her own restaurant one day, she says. “That’s the plan.” –Kiko Miyasato

When Downtown Grand property executive chef Nicholas Beesley took the reins of the resort’s culinary program in mid-2023, revitalizing the menu at the revered Triple George Grill was among his first priorities. Beesley has been in Las Vegas since late 2009, in properties from Caesars

Palace to the Silverton, after years of developing his skills in the eastern U.S. “Downtown Grand offers me an array of diverse talent to work with. My favorite thing about my role here is that I really enjoy being able to express myself in the food,” Beesley said. When you dine at Triple George Grill, enjoy the secluded booths along with a prominent bar (perfect for happy hour with its special eats and drinks) and look out for elevated cocktails like the Privilege, with a mix of Hennessy V.S. cognac, Grand Marnier, pineapple and lemon juices and orange syrup, or the Tokyo Tea, combining vodka, gin, rum, tequila, melon liqueur, sour mix and a splash of Sprite. And you’ll find steakhouse signatures such as crab cakes, wedge salad, salmon and tomahawk ribeye all over the menu. Tableside Caesar salad is a revered presentation of the classic dish. You’ll also notice that those familiar foods have creative twists to explore. For instance, the crab cakes are served with a Cajun aioli and lemon crème fraîche, while the blue BLT wedge integrates sun-dried tomatoes. As you peruse the offerings, more

favorites come to light like Italian meatballs, made with all beef, pork and veal, oysters on the half shell, and shrimp cocktail. French onion soup features a combo of Swiss and Parmesan, while mozzarella terzetto, a dish recommended by Beesley, presents three types of mozzarella along with heirloom tomatoes, Kalamata olives, soppressata, gherkins and roasted red peppers. Main dishes include the petite filet mignon, 8 ounces of black Angus beef

(and steak selections can be enhanced several ways, from peppercorn sauce to a Gorgonzola melt), bone-in pork chop, rack of lamb, eggplant cannelloni, and chicken Parmesan. Seafood includes sea scallops with roasted sweet potato polenta and another Beesley favorite, the Fisherman’s Wharf cioppino, chock-full of shrimp, clams, mussels, octopus, squid and fish in a tomato-herb broth. Top it all off with tiramisu or go more decadent with smoked chocolate cake and an espresso martini. Over at Freedom Beat, Downtown Grand’s diner, be sure to check out the Build Your Own Mac & Cheese Bowl, with choices of protein, cheeses and pastas, something Beesley introduced after tweaking other parts of the diner’s menu. But there are plenty of other good choices such as the pot roast Benedict, stuffed strawberry French toast, a pot roast sandwich on sourdough, Nashville hot chicken, New York steak and a vegan shepherd’s pie.

Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease keeps the fire stoked Whether you’re in town for the first time or the 101st time, you’ve definitely seen the Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease performers. From billboards to online content, the beautiful and talented ladies in this long-running adult romp are basically omnipresent in this city, and as they celebrate their 24th year in business, it’s clear why. From the moment you walk into the Atrium Showroom, you know you’re in for a great evening. Party lighting and catchy tunes fill the theater while everyone shuffles to their seats. But wait, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. There’s something special for you even before the doors open. If you’re looking to have a more immersive, in-depth experience, you can book the VIP option, which begins about an hour before showtime and introduces you to the behind-the-scenes world of Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease. You’ll meet some of the dancers, learn about each performer’s background, and see backstage. To top it off, you’ll receive a

VIP swag bag filled with mementos of this one-of-a-kind evening. Once you’ve concluded your tour, sit back and enjoy the show! And trust us, you will. This is a fast-paced, high-energy production, with each number displaying a fantasy fulfilled. The show’s host, Lorena Peril, shines with witty humor and powerhouse vocals that leave you itching to hear more. The vocalist seamlessly transitions from singing songs like “Roxanne” by The Police and Nina Simone’s version of “I Put A Spell On You” to cracking jokes with the crowd. And if you’re close enough for Peril to see you (which you are, because there’s literally not a bad seat in the house), be ready. You may have the opportunity to participate in the show; you may even find yourself onstage. And the dancers are incredible. They’re athletic, they’re gorgeous, and they never miss a beat. You’ll get a taste of many fantasies throughout the show, one being the super playful peek-a-boo number to “Solo Dancing” by Indiana. As each of the girls take their turn pulling apart the curtains and having a moment alone in the spotlight, the upbeat, dynamic tunes pull the crowd in. During Peril’s rendition of “Black

Soolin

Velvet,” you’ll watch a few of the womens get all tied up. Fans of the movie Burlesque will enjoy the final fantasy of the night as the ladies show you exactly how they burlesque. The show’s cast also includes an aerialist who performs some heart-stopping stunts. Right now is an especially neat time to see Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease, because it is on the road to 25 years at Luxor, which means it’s making a lot of changes. Normally, the show refreshes a few numbers per year, but this year most of the show will be revamped. That means you can have the time of your life at the show while you’re here, and by the time you come back (because we know you can’t resist coming back), the production may look very different. Sure, the greatest parts will remain, but there will be new props, songs and choreography being added all year. Talk about a fantasy fulfilled!

Kylie Minogue returns for more dates of her smash Strip residency By Kiko Miyasato

Nearly every decade since the late ’80s, pop music sensation Kylie Minogue has made her mark on the music scene, bringing her inimitable style and sultry-sweet voice to stages around the world. Now for the first time, Minogue plays a residency show inside one of Las Vegas’ newest and most opulent nightclub-meets-concert spaces, Voltaire Belle de Nuit, at The Venetian. Recently, Las Vegas Magazine checked in with Minogue. Catch her this week, Jan. 19-20.

I always thought I would have a residency in Vegas. I’ve toured most of the world with various shows over the years. In 2005, my Showgirl tour was a nod to Parisian cabaret and Vegas showgirls. In 2011, my Aphrodite tour had all the bells and whistles, including precision water fountains throughout the show. Everyone was saying back then that this was a Vegas show. It was absolutely crazy to travel with the fountains and everything, but it was totally amazing. As time rolled on, one of the shows I was offered in Vegas was Voltaire. It appealed to me because of its glamour, decadence and intimacy. It brought to mind venues of the past where Elvis and Sinatra may have played. Designed

by Tony Award-winner Derek McLane, it was all a very appealing offer to finally do a residency in Vegas. The irony is that it is quite the opposite of those big shows I mentioned, rather it is about the close connection with the audience. We really become one wild and wonderful group through this show.

It has presented some different challenges! I am known for big shows, so I still somehow managed to put a decent-size show in this snug room! The venue is like wonderland in a much more analog way than some other venues I’ve played, and I think this adds to the palpable emotion in the audience.

Oh, for sure. That has already started! I’ve seen so much joy from the crowd and also some sobbing! I think because this is such an

unusual place for me to play, many fans are simply overcome! The show is fun and escapist but also has a lot of heart, and I really appreciate that fans are able to express their emotions and let themselves feel truly free.

I will indeed, I have four songs from my new album, Tension. The first three singles, “Padam Padam,” “Tension” and “Hold On to Now.” Plus the song I wrote especially for this show, “Vegas High.” And believe me, we all feel the Vegas high!

I started working on the album around early 2021. I had finished my previous album in lockdown, so I was very grateful and energized to run into the new album with total gratitude, to be with some of my favorite people I make music with. I started without a clear direction and as months passed, I realized

that, as opposed to my previous two albums, this one wouldn’t really have a theme. The theme, if anything, was to make Kylie songs. Given my back catalog that could mean a number of things, but at that point in time it was about songs that are club-based and emotionally shining. I found a real liberty with this type of approach. We could jump styles, just play, indulge and have fun.

One of them is that experience is earned, not given. When I was younger, I used to wonder how I could do some of the things other artists were doing. The answer was time. I had to wait and learn and gather that knowledge. As we all know, this industry is a notoriously heady and exciting world, which needs the balance of some kind of normality.

This really is a first for me and for my fans, so get ready to have an amazing night!

Explore the many experiences available during your stay here 40 | 1.14.24 Las Vegas Magazine

You’ve finally made it to Vegas! So many choices—you can gamble to your heart’s (and wallet’s) content, you can go on a shopping spree, you can eat at some of the world’s finest restaurants and see some of the greatest entertainers on the planet—often all in the same day! These experiences are quintessential Vegas musts and definitely contribute to a joyful and fulfilling visit. But what if that’s not enough? You may not know it, but away from the Strip, Vegas is a mini-paradise for the everyday adventurer, whether you’re venturing out during those brutal, triple-digit temperatures or during the cooler months. There are mountains to climb, trails to explore, a man-made lake to admire and nature to observe. Of course, we fully expect that you’ll be taking advantage of all the Strip has to offer. That’s why you’re here! But if you really want to stretch your legs and see a side of the Southwest you’ve never seen before, take a chance and do something new—call that Über or Lyft, head to REI for some supplies, and get off the grid. You may never want to leave!

Start off your morning by exploring one of the many hiking trails in Las Vegas. Near Lake Mead, right outside of Boulder City, is the Historic Railroad Trail (nps. gov), an easy 7.5-mile trek (round trip) that follows the old railway that trans-

ported machinery and supplies to Hoover Dam during its construction. Along the path, you’ll pass through five massive tunnels, which helps measure the scope of the dam’s construction and shows how the project was a major feat of engineering. Another great option for easy hiking trails is Lone Mountain Park. There’s a flat-ground desert trail that loops around the tiny mountain and offers great views of the city. But if you’d like to make that view even better, climb to the mountain’s peak.

If you decide to check out either of those hiking areas, remember that the weather may reach warmer digits, so bring a lot of water and don’t forget your sunscreen. If you’d rather not deal with any heat at all Mount Charleston is a much cooler refuge, with temperatures nearly 20 degrees lower than in the valley. It’s home to the popular Mary Jane Falls and Cathedral Rock trails, to name a few, which are a little tougher and rockier than the previously mentioned trails, but the crisp mountain air and stunning scenery— as well as seeing a side of Las Vegas that you probably didn’t know existed—will make it all worth it.

If hiking doesn’t appeal to you, but you still want to observe and enjoy nature, that’s not a problem. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve (cityofhenderson.com) is a tranquil place to view resident birds like roadrunners and verdin, as well as nesting American avocets and blacknecked stilts. Go to Floyd Lamb State Park and you might wonder if you’re still in Las Vegas. The small oasis has lush

Las Vegas Magazine 1.14.24 | 41

vegetation, a quaint ranch and a few fishing ponds filled with ducks and geese— you’ll even come across a few peacocks. But if you want to see some nature without leaving your car, take a drive along the 13-mile scenic loop at Red Rock Canyon (redrockcanyonlv.org), where you’ll be able to view unique red rock formations and wide-open desert landscapes. If you feel compelled to leave your car, however, there are several observation points and overlooks where you can stretch your legs, walk around and further explore the canyon. In speaking of canyons, while it’s not Vegas, the Grand Canyon is too close to not be part of a Southern Nevada experience. If you don’t know where to start, try Grand Canyon West (grandcanyonwest.com). They offer a one-stop shop of ways to view the Grand Canyon and its surrounding areas, such as walking along the glass-paneled Skywalk or taking a helicopter tour. There’s also a convenient shuttle service that circulates through Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch, allowing you to explore the West Rim at your own pace.

Lake Las Vegas

Lake Mead

Historic Railroad Trail

What’s great about the desert is daytime temperatures can still warm the body so visitors have the opportunity to enjoy some of Vegas’ watery attractions, even in winter weather. Take a short drive off the Strip to Lake Las Vegas for the popular Lake Las Vegas Water Sports (lakelasvegaswatersports.com). It’s the total package for fun on the water, with electric boats, kayaks and paddle boards available for rent (reservations highly recommended). Or head a little farther down the road and you’ll find Lake

Mead (nps.gov). It’s one of the nation’s largest man-made lakes, so there’s a lot to explore. Entry to the lake allows you to access relaxing beach areas, including Boulder Beach, and its several marinas, like Lake Mead Marina and Lake Mead Boat Harbor, where you can rent pontoon boats, sports boats and WaveRunners through Boating Lake Mead (boatinglakemead.com). Maybe all that water will remind you of something like the Bellagio Fountains, and you’ll want to head right back to what you came for: that fabulous Las Vegas Strip.
