SUPERGUIDE THURSDAY FEB 08 LIV GOLF LAS VEGAS The upstart, 13-team pro golf league founded in 2022 by Hall of Famer Greg Norman lands in Las Vegas at a supremely interesting time. Sure, it’s Super Bowl weekend, but the last week has sparked merger talk with LIV and the PGA Tour, which has been forced to line up new investment to continue to compete. No matter how that works out, fans will be able to experience LIV’s “disruptive” and different style of golf (just 54 holes over three days, special team competitions, bigger paydays and an overall more party-ready atmosphere) at the Las Vegas Country Club throughout the weekend, with various ticket levels and hospitality-heavy experiences. Party hole cabana, anyone? Thru 2/10, times vary, $150+, Las Vegas Country Club, livgolf.com. –Brock Radke

X What would it be like to survive on a space station on Pluto? You can find out from the comfort of your seat at A Public Fit’s staging of X by Alistair McDowall. The sci-fi thriller focuses on characters working on a desolate space station on Pluto. When the crew of researchers loses contact with Earth, they struggle to combat their isolation and stay alive. “You think you’re watching a gritty science fiction drama, then maybe it’s a psychological mystery and then, bam! The ghosts show up,” says artistic director Jake Staley. “I would call it magical realism, meets absurdism, meets sci-fi.” A haunting atmosphere and compelling storytelling will transport you to another planet. AEW COLLISION Question: Is there any sporting event Green Valley’s Dollar Loan Center arena can’t host? Answer: Apparently not. You may not consider pro wrestling a full-fledged sport, but there’s no disparaging the athletic feats that will be on display in the squared circle when the stars of All Elite Wrestling come to town. AEW has been battling the behemoth WWE for TV ratings since the former league was founded five years ago, and this installation of Collision will be broadcast on TNT. DAVID BLAINE The last time we saw David Blaine, he was plummeting to his death. This year? The magician with nine lives is upping the ante at Impossible, a new residency show that puts Blaine’s most heart-pounding stunts at the forefront for our viewing pleasure. The Brooklyn illusionist has a proven track record of crazy stunts—the man has eaten glass and been buried alive; he’s not fooling around, people—so we can only guess what he has in store for his latest Vegas production. Perhaps he’ll return to his street magic roots with a bit of card trick sleight of hand. Or maybe he’ll ingest a few nails, as previously seen on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The unpredictability of this showman is where the magic truly begins. 8 p.m., $100-$250, Encore Theater, ticketmaster.com. –Amber Sampson

Q+A Guy Fieri has created a tailgate party fit for Las Vegas BY BROCK RADKE He’s a lifelong Raiders fan and UNLV graduate, so of course Guy Fieri is freaking out as Allegiant Stadium hosts the first Super Bowl in Las Vegas. You would be, too, if you were planning one of the biggest tailgate parties of all time on the Las Vegas Strip with a sponsorship by Pepsi, 25 pop-up restaurants and entertainment from country singer Dustin Lynch and Wynn Nightlife resident DJ Diplo. “Do you know how many Super Bowls I watched in Vegas, from Vegas, going to casinos and sportsbooks, watching the game on the jumbotron at Caesars? To think this is all coming to reality at the same time? I’m out of my mind,” Fieri says. “And then I get to throw a party on top of it. If I didn’t have this relationship with Caesars Entertainment, I don’t think we would have gotten the parking lot behind the Linq. It’s just been like a perfect storm coming together, and 15,000 people are going to get a rockin’ party with awesome entertainment, booze and food. I’m doing this Vegas-style.” What doesn’t he do Vegas-style? He’s curated a lineup of local eateries to participate in the big game bash, including Forte, Naked City Pizza, Fat Choy and Letty’s. And did we mention that general admission is free? It’s a lot to take in; no wonder Fieri is pumped, and happy to share his excitement with the Weekly.
You’ve probably been thinking about the day the Super Bowl comes to Las Vegas since the first talk of the Raiders moving here. You know you’re going to build a big stadium, and you know you’re not getting it built unless you get some promise from the NFL that in three or four years, you’re gonna get the Super Bowl, which is what should happen. Vegas is going to get the NBA, and you just got the A’s. And amen. It’s the Entertainment Capital of the World, it’s the greatest place to come to. I think it’s awesome what’s getting ready to happen. When I pulled off the tailgate last year for the first time in Arizona, everyone looked at me crazy and said there’s no way you’re going to do this event for 10,000 people and do it for free. I said we’re absolutely gonna do that. And how many people are coming to Vegas for the Super Bowl? There’s not enough tickets to the game. I want to give people that experience because I love the Super Bowl. Even though my team, the Raiders are not there this year—maybe next year—I want everybody to have that energy, to feel what it’s like, and when you’re doing it in Vegas, you have to make that sensation a little bigger. How special has it been for you to have this new Raiders experience in Las Vegas? Your concession restaurant at Allegiant Stadium is right across from the team’s Hall of Fame display. You won’t find anybody that has a concession at that stadium that has more pride, passion and enthusiasm than me. When I’m there for a game, be it in the seats or in the suites, I always make a beeline to go to the restaurant, see all our team members, give high fives and take pictures, the whole deal. It creates a little chaos to do it, but I’m just so proud. I told [team owner] Mark Davis back in the day, please, please just make sure when we go to Vegas, I get a concession. I don’t care if it’s a hot dog stand. When you’re a Raider, it’s a different energy, a way of life. You have good years

and bad years and we’ve been through so many things, but we’re super proud to host and I think people are going to love the stadium. How much fun did you have curating the local restaurants to participate in the tailgate? This is my baby. I plan this the whole year ‘round. We’ve got a partnership with Medium Rare and they’re just gangsters; they put on big parties all around the country all year long, and we had the same vision for what we’re trying to achieve. So, we have ten restaurants that were on Triple D [[Diners, Drive-ins & Dives Dives]] from Las Vegas coming in, and we have this passport ticket you can get to get a sampling of each one. And we have a cool VIP experience where chefs Antonia Lofaso and Aaron May are doing the food. And if you’re a Cash App holder, you get this VIP ticket for $165, and there’s nothing in Vegas where you can get in and have free drinks and free food from 10:30 until 3:30 for that price. Your restaurant brands have been growing so fast lately. Do you have any new concepts in mind for Vegas? We’re getting ready to do a big one in Columbus [Ohio] and if it does what I think it will, we can turn around and bring it to Vegas. We just opened Flavortown Sports Kitchen at [Horseshoe Las Vegas] and Chicken Guy at Caesars [Palace], and we’ll have another Chicken Guy at another Caesars hotel. I’ve got all kinds of things up my sleeve, but from idea to acceptance to delivery is a couple years. That’s not how people think it happens, they thing you just come up with it and open up tomorrow. We really take our time to do it right and build these things out beautifully. But if you want to experience all of our Vegas restaurants, they’re all going to be at the tailgate.

BROCK PURDY
What to watch in Super Bowl 58 as Las Vegas stages its first ever “Big Game” BY CASE KEEFER
C O V E R
S T O R Y
he NFL implemented a two-week break ahead of the Super Bowl from the game’s inception as a way to generate publicity for the championship event. Fifty-seven years later, the prolonged amount of lead time still works to the league’s benefit. It might not seem like the country’s biggest sporting event needs to drum up extra attention anymore, but annually allowing the matchup time to breathe after 21 straight weeks of games helps put the biggest storylines in focus. The long-awaited debut of Las Vegas as a Super Bowl host city is a big talking point this year, but the second championship matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in the last five seasons presents several of its own wrinkles too. Here are six of the biggest narratives leading into Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas. “Swelce” Much to the chagrin of the crotchety segment of the NFL fan base, one of the biggest stars of Super Bowl 58 won’t be on the field. She’ll be in a luxury suite watching the action. Pop star Taylor Swift will reportedly be in attendance at Allegiant Stadium to support her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, despite having a performance as part of her Eras Tour in Tokyo the night before. The relationship between Swift and Kelce has stolen NFL headlines all year, and now will be prominently featured in the biggest game of the year. Many curmudgeons throughout the season suggested that the romance and all the media coverage around it had negatively affected the 34-year-old Kelce, who looked a step slower this regular season and had his least prolific production in a decade. Those accusations have unsurprisingly quieted in the postseason, where Kelce has looked in vintage form with 23 receptions (first in the
league), 262 receiving yards (second in the league) and three receiving touchdowns (first in the league). Kelce became the all-time receptions leader in NFL postseason history in an AFC Championship Game victory over the Ravens with 156 catches since his playoff debut in 2015. He passed Jerry Rice in the record books, though Kelce remains second to the former 49ers great in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Whether the Chiefs win or lose, expect Swift to come down to field level postgame to meet Kelce—with cameras as hungry to catch that moment as the ceremonial celebration of the winning team. Weapon differential The reason the Super Bowl featuring the Chiefs comes as a moderate surprise, despite the team having reached the big game in three of the previous four years, is because of their lack of big-play threats beyond Kelce.

At 11-6 in the regular season, Kansas City had its worst record since two-time regular-season and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Patrick Mahomes took over as its quarterback in 2018. Almost all of the blame fell on a skill-player group that rates as mediocre at best for NFL standards and did little to help Mahomes throughout the season. Receivers Marques Valdes-Scantling and Kadarius Toney specifically have taken a large share of criticism for game-changing drops, penalties and mistakes that cost the Chiefs wins. Both situations seem to have sorted themselves out in the playoffs though. Valdes-Scantling has bounced back with a couple huge receptions, including one on 3rd-and-long at the end of the game to seal the victory over the Ravens. Toney meanwhile has been inactive and went on an expletive-filled social media rant accusing the Chiefs of lying about his injury status. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Toney would remain with the team for the Super Bowl, but it would be a surprise if he was included on the active roster. Rookie receiver Rashee Rice, who was taken in the second round out of SMU, has become Kelce’s primary sidekick in the Chiefs’ passing game while second-year running back Isiah Pacheco has emerged as an effective between-the-tackles runner. Kelce, Rice and Pacheco give Mahomes some firepower, but at a level that pales in comparison to what 49ers counterpart Brock Purdy has at his disposal. San Francisco likely has the best playmaking group in the NFL with the likes of running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and tight end George Kittle. Polarizing Purdy It’s remarkable and unprecedented that a second-year quarterback one season removed from being “Mr. Irrelevant” as the last pick in the NFL Draft has reached the Super Bowl. That doesn’t mean the former Iowa State passer’s rise is being widely celebrated. On the contrary, the 24-year-old
L A S V E G A S W E E K LY
Purdy’s success has been debated ad nauseum. Detractors say it’s mostly a product of the embarrassment of talent riches around him and the advantage of playing in coach Kyle Shanahan’s quarterback-friendly system. But Purdy’s statistics, both traditional and advanced, blew away those belonging to all other quarterbacks in the NFL this season. Purdy, for example, threw for 9.6 yards per pass attempt—a jarring 1.3 yards greater than any other full-time starting quarterback in the league. He was the odds-on favorite to win the league’s Most Valuable Player award before a disastrous Christmas night game where he threw four interceptions in a loss to the Ravens. Many film analysts felt vindicated by that performance, as well as shaky starts in each of the 49ers’ two playoff games, as they had long described Purdy as reckless and unrefined. Purdy ultimately rallied San Francisco back from deficits against both the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions to get to the Super Bowl but will likely need to play better throughout the whole game to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. And hoisting the Lombardi Trophy would be the ultimate trump card to his naysayers. Mahomes the GOAT? No such concerns exist regarding the 28-year-old Mahomes, who’s unanimously regarded as the best current football player in the world. The only question now is whether the Chiefs’ quarterback has already done enough to be considered the greatest football player of all-time. Recently-retired quarterback Tom Brady is most commonly bestowed that distinction after racking up seven Super Bowl victories in his 22year career as a starting quarterback. Brady’s last title notably came against Mahomes when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers smashed the Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl 55 three years ago. Brady won three championships in his first four years of starting while Mahomes is going for his third in six seasons. But the latter has been asked to do a lot more than the former early in his career, as Brady’s initial winning teams were more

defensively driven. The Chiefs had been vulnerable on defense under Mahomes until this year, when the young unit broke out as one of the best in the NFL. Mahomes’ early-career numbers dwarf Brady’s, so it’s probably fair to say the Chiefs passer is on track to the coveted “GOAT” status. But it will take several more years if he wants to match the longevity of Brady, who played at a high level until he walked away at 45 years old. It’s hard to envision a better beginning for Mahomes than starting a fourth Super Bowl in six years as he will do in Las Vegas. Defensive infrastructure vs. Defensive superstars The 49ers have two of the best defensive players in the world in 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa at edge rusher and three-time All-Pro, do-everything linebacker Fred Warner. The notables don’t stop there, as edge rusher Chase Young, defensive tackle Arik Armstead, cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Tashaun Gipson are all highly-decorated, big-name players. The Chiefs may have only a single player with a name as recognizable and distinguished as that sextet—defensive tackle Chris Jones. And yet, the Chiefs’ unheralded stop unit has been better than the 49ers’ star-studded group this year. Kansas City sat fifth in the league in giving up only 4.8 yards per play during the regular season. San Francisco was ninth at 5.1 yards per play and has ballooned to allowing 5.5 yards per play in the playoffs. Shanahan has recently looked frustrated on the sidelines with new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who hasn’t gotten as much out of the unit as the departed/current Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans managed in the previous two seasons. Chiefs veteran defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo meanwhile has become something of a cult hero. Many of his players wore “In Spags We Trust” t-shirts after the AFC Championship Game and sung his praises. Spagnuolo has already won three Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator—two with the New York Giants
and one last year with the Chiefs— and is firming up his case as an alltime great assistant coach this year. Shanahan’s redemption The reputation of the 49ers’ coach has a duality: He’s known as an offensive wiz but a game-management klutz. Never have his shortcomings been as evident as in his two previous Super Bowl appearances. The 44-year-old Shanahan opted to drain the clock and not pursue more points before halftime of Super Bowl 54, helping to make the Chiefs’ eventual comeback on the 49ers a little easier in their 31-20 victory. Shanahan was also a part of the biggest collapse in Super Bowl history as the offensive coordinator of the 2017 Atlanta Falcons, which led the Patriots 28-3 with 17 minutes left to play before losing 34-28 in overtime. He failed to adjust his strategy despite the big lead and repeatedly called passes that fell incomplete and led to short drives that enabled the Patriots to erase the deficit quickly. In-game decisions are always extra scrutinized in the Super Bowl, but Shanahan’s specifically will be spotlighted this time around. He’s already bungled the clock again in this year’s playoffs, settling for a long field goal attempt before halftime by struggling kicker Jake Moody against the Packers that wound up blocked. But it’s worth noting that the 65-year-old Reid used to take much of the same criticism and was long regarded as the best NFL coach who couldn’t win the big one. He’s now broken through for a pair of titles, and is gunning for his third. Shanahan could similarly exorcise his own demons in Las Vegas.

BY CASE KEEFER yreek Hill burned the coverage to haul in a 44yard bomb from Patrick Mahomes on a 3rd-and-15 play midway through the fourth quarter to set up a touchdown the last time the Kansas City Chiefs met the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. That’s the moment fans still cite as emblematic of the Chiefs’ comeback 31-20 victory over the 49ers at Super Bowl 54 on February 3, 2020 in Miami. Over time, most Super Bowls are remembered for a singular moment or two. Think defensive tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry’s rushing touchdown for the Bears in 1985, linebacker James Harrison’s 100-yard interception return for a touchdown and subsequent collapse from exhaustion for the Steelers in 2008 or tight end Rob Gronkowski’s back-to-back touch-
down catches and spikes early for the Buccaneers in 2021. What will go down as the defining moments of Super Bowl 58? Here are six wild guesses—three in the event of each team winning. Travis Kelce scores a touchdown, flashes the hand-heart sign and blows a kiss to Taylor Swift before proposing in the winning celebration on the field after the game. Sure, the last part probably isn’t going to happen, but there’s no denying it’s been speculated on going into the game. An offshore sports book even posted a proposition wager asking bettors if Kelce would propose postgame with the “yes” opening at +170 (i.e. risking $100 to win $170) and the “no” at -190 (i.e. risking $190 to win $100). That implies a 35% chance—surely a bad line
2.8.24
but a bet that would be memorable to cash. As for the heart symbol and kiss to the stands, Kelce has already done that in the playoffs. Christian McCaffrey becomes the first player in Super Bowl history to score a rushing, receiving and passing touchdown all in the same game. The 49ers running back became the first player in 17 years, and fourth all-time, to pull off the feat in the regular season last year. He’s scored at least one rushing touchdown in 16 of 21 games this season, and also has seven receiving scores. And, if the 49ers run a trick play like a double-pass, he’s the most likely player to be throwing the ball. Andy Reid calls a brilliant game plan that leads to three Patrick Mahomes touchdown passes and then announces his retirement underneath a stream of red and gold confetti postgame. In fairness, there’s been no speculation about Reid walking away after this season but there were some rumors he was considering it going into last year’s Super Bowl. Reid asserted his intentions to return immediately after the Chiefs beat the Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, a year ago, but what if this season brings the opposite? There could be no better way to walk away than as a back-to-back champion. Deebo Samuel takes a pass over the middle from Brock Purdy 60 yards for a touchdown and celebrates by pretending to party in the Wynn Field Club at the back of the end zone. Players always marvel at the club on the field at Allegiant Stadium, especially from unaccustomed road teams traveling to play the Raiders during the regular season. The bottle-service lounges in front of the elevated DJ booth seem tai-
lor-made for a viral celebration. Samuel has put together a couple viral celebrations throughout his five-year career and might be the best candidate in this year’s Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Mahomes has a stronger reputation for big plays, but Purdy has nearly doubled him with 40+ yard completions this season—14 to eight. Isiah Pacheco lowers his shoulders to bulldoze in a game-winning touchdown in the final minute before busting out a vintage Usher dance move in celebration. Every year Super Bowl players jokingly bemoan having to miss the halftime show while in the locker room. Maybe the Chiefs’ running back will give his teammates a little taste of the Usher performance they’ll miss. Pacheco is less established in only his second year but could give Samuel a run for his money in the touchdown-celebration department. Pacheco is known to bust out dance moves crazier than Usher-inspired ones and said last year he goes to great length in planning and choreographing them. Charvarius Ward seals the 49ers’ first Super Bowl victory since 1995 with an interception returned for a touchdown off former teammate Patrick Mahomes to go up two scores in the fourth quarter. Mahomes, as great as he may be, is not mistake-proof as he sat fourth in the NFL this regular season with 14 interceptions (three more than Purdy). The Raiders showed it’s possible to snag a pick-six off him as Jack Jones led the way to a shocking Christmas Day upset victory over the Chiefs with a 33-yard touchdown. Jones primarily plays left cornerback, the same position as Ward. The six-year veteran Ward helped the Chiefs knock off the 49ers four years ago, and now has the poetic chance to do the reverse.

Finding a way to bet on all the biggest names of Super Bowl 58 BY CASE KEEFER
Local bookmakers expect this year’s Super Bowl to topple the previous statewide record of $179.8 million wagered in 2022 when the Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals, and it’s not just because the big game is here. Another key factor according to those in the industry is the star-studded rosters belonging to both the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. There are no shortage of players on both sides that bettors will be hungry to bet on through proposition wagers, so let’s join in on the fun and Patrick Mahomes: Will throw an interception at -110 (i.e. risking $110 to win $100) (Boyd Sports) The 49ers primarily rush four defenders and play zone coverage — a setup that has seen Mahomes throw 10 interceptions this season, per 4for4 Sports. Brock Purdy: Under 31.5 pass attempts at -110 (SuperBook) Purdy even went a half-attempt under this number in the NFC Championship Game against Detroit when San Francisco fell into a 24-7 halftime hole and were forced to throw more in a comeback attempt. Travis Kelce: Under 72.5 receiving yards (SuperBook) Kelce has been incredible in the playoffs, but it’s created a sell-high opportunity as this is the highest his receiving-yards prop has been in three months and the 49ers’ defense will be determined to slow him. George Kittle: Sacramento Kings -9.5 first-half points vs. Kittle receiving yards (SuperBook) It’s an obligation to dabble in the ever-popular cross-sport market, and the fast-paced Kings
bet them all. Here are 10 of the biggest offensive names in the game, and a bet involving each of them spanning several different markets and sports books. A peek into a bettor’s prop portfolio is telling of how they see the game going, so there’s no point in hiding in my prediction. In fact, let’s lead off the betting with it. Give me the 49ers to beat the Chiefs 28-20 or 24-20—both exact-score props are available at 175-to-1 at the SuperBook by Westgate Las Vegas. Here are the 10 player-prop bets.
are set up for a shootout on Super Bowl Sunday against another one of the NBA’s top 10 teams in pace, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Isiah Pacheco: Christian McCaffrey -19.5 receiving yards vs. Pacheco receiving yards (SuperBook) McCaffrey has nearly double the amount of targets to Pacheco this season—100 to 55—and the Chiefs struggle to defend running backs in the passing game. The 49ers do not. Christian McCaffrey: 4-to-1 to score the first touchdown (Circa Sports) Give me all the pro-McCaffrey positions as this is a big-time plus matchup for the running back. This is a chalky bet but McCaffrey was regularly around 3-to-1 to score the first touchdown in regular-season games, and some of them didn’t set up as well as getting to play against mediocre Chiefs’ rush defense. Rashee Rice: Under 20.5 longest reception at -120 (BetMGM) The rookie revelation is going to have plenty of opportunities, but few of them will be downfield. Kansas City primarily throws to Rice near the line of scrimmage.
Brandon Aiyuk: To have the most receiving yards in the game at +350 (i.e. risking $100 to win $350) (Caesars/William Hill) Rice and Kelce are both priced ahead of Aiyuk (at +280 and +300, respectively) but that makes no sense based on season-long production where the 49ers’ top option was far and away the most prolific of the trio. Buy low on Aiyuk following a pair of relatively quiet playoff games. Richie James: To score a touchdown at 11-to-1 (BetMGM) OK, the journeyman receiver doesn’t exactly fit within the “star” distinction but the Chiefs are relatively short on weapons behind Kelce, Pacheco and Rice. They started using James more in an AFC Championship Game win over the Ravens, and love running gadget plays to their depth receivers near the end zone. Deebo Samuel: Under 59.5 receiving yards (SuperBook) The Chiefs have a young and athletic defensive backfield that doesn’t give up many yards after the catch— Samuel’s best attribute. Epic parties and events surrounding the Super Bowl are bigger than ever in Vegas BY BROCK RADKE he Maxim Big Game Experience, from the luxury lifestyle brand that publishes 11 editions of its magazine distributed in 75 countries, has been one of the most talked-about events in every Super Bowl city every year, stretching back for two decades. Does this year’s version need to be bigger and bolder just because it’s in Las Vegas? “A hundred percent,” says Seth Kaplan, founder of Unkommon Events, which has partnered with Maxim to throw the party for the
past five years. “To come to Las Vegas and host something like this is a dream for a lot of event producers because it’s such a hub for entertainment, even on a regular weekend. People are projecting this could be the biggest weekend ever in Las Vegas, so to be able to come in, entertain and participate, it’s a dream.” Themed this year as the Maxim Casino Royale Experience, the party is taking over the Resorts World Event Center the night before the Super Bowl on February 10,
featuring performances by hip-hop stars 21 Savage and 50 Cent along with dance music artist Elderbrook, German DJ duo Plastik Funk and others; 120 VIP tables; the Vivid Seats luxury lounge with big game ticket giveaways; an oversized game of Duck Hunt and other activities; and food and drinks from Raising Cane’s, Ghost Energy Drink, Tequila 512, and loads of food trucks outside the 80,000-square-foot indoor space. (Tickets are at vividseats. com/maximparty.) “We love to come in and build something that doesn’t exist, and we’re super excited to partner with Resorts World, one of the newest properties on the Strip,” Kaplan says. “No other place has this kind of blank slate where we can come in and bring this to life. We’re
popping up with a kind of music festival meets hybrid nightlife experience.” The party is expecting 5,000 guests, with the biggest spenders springing for the $1 million Ace of Spades package. This package for 10 includes private jet transportation from anywhere in the continental United States, a suite at Resorts World and $75,000 casino credit, a nightly $10,000 dining credit at the resort’s vast restaurant collection, all-access passes to the Maxim Casino Royale Experience and 50-yard-line tickets to the game on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. That top-tier experience is just a piece of one of the dozens of special events planned up and down the Strip this weekend, includ-
ing exclusive concerts at arenas, mega-parties at nightclubs, indoor and outdoor tailgate extravaganzas and everything else imaginable. Events and management company Medium Rare is programming Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate behind the Linq Promenade (see our interview with Fieri on page 16) as well as the Shaq’s Fun House (shaqsfun house.com), Gronk Beach (gronk beach.com) and Sports Illustrated-The Party (sitheparty.com) events at XS Nightclub and Encore Beach Club at Wynn. After he’s done DJing at Wynn, Shaquille O’Neal will throw a stand-up comedy party at Resorts World Theatre on February 10 with Deon Cole, D.L. Hughley, Aida Rodriguez and more.
Michelob Ultra, the beer brand that already has its name on the arena at Mandalay Bay where the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces play, also hosts a big game weekend takeover at Topgolf Las Vegas, the Michelob Ultra Country Club (michelobultra.com/ultracountryclub) with legendary athletes Dan Marino and Alex Morgan hosting and Lil Wayne, T-Pain and Alesso performing. Country star Luke Combs—who surged last year behind a cover of “Fast Car,” which he performed with Tracy Chapman at the Grammy Awards this week—is headlining the BetMGM Big Game Bash at the Cosmopolitan on February 10, with $400 tickets on sale exclusively on the betting app. And the recently announced FanDuel third
annual Super Bowl party snags headliners Calvin Harris and Kid Cudi at LIV Nightclub at the Fontainebleau; sorry, it’s invite only. Other events are raising money and awareness during the fun, like the Legends Party at Area15 on February 9 (legendsparty.com), in partnership with the NFL Alumni Association and USA Today, where football legends will hang out and Jason Derulo will perform while raising money for Caring For Kids. SoberBowl Vegas 24 (soberbowl.us) is exactly what it sounds like—a big game bash minus the booze at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater with speakers including sports agent Leigh Steinberg and former NFLers Ryan Leaf and Earl Campbell. And Steinberg, the inspiration

behind the film Jerry Maguire, will hold his own 37th annual Super Bowl party raising money for the Special Olympics at the Ahern Hotel (leighsteinbergsuperbowlparty.com), which will feature guest speakers, a charity poker tournament, an awards ceremony, and Terrell Owens launching the ICON Hall of Fame, a by-the-player, for-the-players football organization. “Our party offers a unique opportunity to focus on player health and safety plus explore new breakthroughs in treating concussion,” Steinberg said in a statement. “And we are always proud to use the event as a platform to celebrate the philanthropic efforts of owners, execs, players, and coaches, who change the world for the better.”

Government has big goal for EVs in the U.S.
The federal government is promoting electric vehicles with incentives, and wants EVs to account for half of new vehicle sales by 2030, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said at the National Automotive Dealers Association show in Las Vegas. The U.S., however, only produces a small fraction of the raw materials needed to make electric cars and trucks, she noted. Chinese enterprises dominate the sector, she said. Other countries, such as Canada and Australia, can also mine and process minerals needed for electric vehicle batteries on a much larger scale compared with the U.S., Granholm said. She said the government is offering 30% tax credits for domestic renewable energy investments, and the office in charge of the loan program is targeting companies that can help build supply chains stateside. –Rhiannon Saegart

Cirque du Soleil performers help escort members of the Kansas City Chiefs onto the field during Super Bowl LVIII Opening Night at Allegiant Stadium. Opening Night is a relatively new phenomenon with the NFL having only introduced it ahead of Super Bowl 50 eight years ago in Santa Clara, California. The event’s predecessor was Media Day, typically held on Tuesday morning of Super Bowl week, as a way for reporters to access all the key players in the game. But as Media Day grew bigger and stranger, the NFL, as it so often does, sought a way to monetize it. Opening Night was the answer, and it’s stuck. (Steve Marcus/Staff)

Teachers group sues over stadium funding
A group of Nevada teachers filed a lawsuit February 5 challenging the constitutionality of a Nevada law that will allocate $380 million in public funding to build a new baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics on the Strip. “Educators throughout Nevada are frustrated by the lack of focus by politicians on real priorities, like public education,” Vicki Kreidel, one of the plaintiffs, said in a Strong Public Schools Nevada news release. “There’s been more planning of a ‘world class’ stadium than there has been implementing a funding plan to ensure a ‘world class’ education for our kids. These misguided priorities are why Nevada continually ranks at the bottom of all the good lists.” The lawsuit was filed in Nevada’s First Judicial District Court in Carson City by the teachers group, a political action committee affiliated with the Nevada State Education Association teachers union, as well as two private individuals. The NSEA also oversees a separate PAC called Schools Over Stadiums, which is circulating a petition seeking to overturn the spending bill via ballot referendum. In addition to the State of Nevada, Gov. Joe Lombardo and state treasurer Zach Conine are listed as defendants. Elizabeth Ray, spokeswoman for Lombardo’s office, declined comment citing the pending litigation. –Casey Harrison

Colossal sporting events like F1 and the Super Bowl will push Las Vegas forward
Las Vegas is doubling down on its new identity as “the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World,” with emphasis on sports. In the last decade, Las Vegas has welcomed three major league and six minor league sports franchises. In less than eight years, we’ve added T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas Ballpark, Allegiant Stadium and the Dollar Loan Center, with a Major League Baseball stadium on the way. And on the heels of hosting one of the most high-profile racing events in the world, Las Vegas is hosting Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant
Stadium on February 11. The transition to a sports town has many Las Vegans excited for many reasons. It provides a renewed sense of identity and excitement for locals to root for a team; it complements and enhances Las Vegas’ prevailing leisure and hospitality industries; and it creates jobs and contributes to overall economic development in the region. But becoming a sports town also has its pitfalls. Strip-adjacent businesses say they were negatively affected by the Formula 1 race in November and beyond due to ongoing track construction and the placement of temporary structures. One store
2.8.24
owner at Flamingo Road and Koval Lane claimed he lost millions in revenue in 2023. Traffic caused by F1 turned many Strip workers’ commutes into unmanageable nightmares for several months. “When you have 40 million visitors, there’s always externalities–environmental, transportation, public safety, health,” says economist Andrew Woods, director of UNLV’s Center for Business and Economic Research. “That is just the nature of [growth]. … We do need to have a conversation about the transportation we have, and are we giving enough choice and options so that we can host bigger and bigger events? We [also] have to make sure our workers can efficiently get to and from work … and be able to take our kids to school at the same time.” It’s a conversation worth having, if we want this town to continue working for residents and visitors just as well as it does for major sporting events. But it’s a conversation more relevant to Formula 1 than the Super Bowl, Woods adds. “With F1, it was a huge giant construction of a track, and they had never done something like that before on their own. And it was certainly a learning experience for all of us,” he says. Although there are valid frustrations at the growing pains that come with accommodating bigger and bigger events, Woods says there’s no question that events like Formula 1 and the Super Bowl benefit the local economy. “One in four jobs in Southern Nevada are tied to leisure and hospitality. One in $3 that is generated in Southern Nevada are tied to leisure and hospitality … About half of the state budget is dependent on some sort of tourism-related tax,” Woods explains. “We need these visitors to come and spend their money because that helps pay for public education and transportation, [etcetera].” Local analytics firm Applied Analysis, which was commissioned by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), has estimated the Super Bowl will have an economic impact of $799 million with $62 million in public revenue. That’s after the LVCVA spent at least $40 million to bring the big game here. The LVCVA also estimated the Super Bowl would create more than 4,000 jobs in the Las Vegas area. Cost-benefit-wise, the Super Bowl will be worthwhile. There’s also the value of hosting an internationally televised event with 110 million viewers. It’s the best possible way of putting Vegas in people’s minds and, hopefully, getting them to come here, says Cara Clarke, vice president of communications for the Vegas Chamber. “It’s priceless, because people are thinking,
maybe I would like to attend a football game in Vegas, or I’d like to take my spouse to Vegas for the weekend, or maybe I should consider going to a meeting in Vegas .... And whenever we bring more visitors here to the Valley, that’s the core of our economy. And that benefits everybody here,” she says. With leisure and hospitality being Southern Nevada’s “golden goose,” anything that can enhance visitation and visitor spending is a win. And having sporting events here enhances the options visitors have, while drawing higher-spending customers and larger groups. Developing those options is a natural “evolution” of the industry and furthers the goal of getting more people to spend more money here, Woods says. “Sports customers tend to stay a little longer than your average weekend warrior customer. They tend to spend a little bit more … and they also come in a bigger group, so it’s not just a couple but on average, it’s usually around three people who come here solely for a sporting event.” According to a May 2023 white paper published by the Center for Business and Economic Research, 1.8 million or more than 5% of Las Vegas’ total visitors in 2022 came to town for a sporting event. And when they come to town, they spend money on hotel rooms, food and drink and transportation. For the Super Bowl, it’s safe to assume that direct spending won’t be limited to the Strip, Woods adds. More than 300,000 visitors are expected to come to Vegas for Super Bowl events. Allegiant Stadium itself has 65,000 seats. “Clearly, a majority of people coming here don’t have a ticket to the game. … They might swing by Allegiant Stadium. But they also will probably find that they can have just as good of a time hanging out in the general area wherever they’re staying. … Around those large resort hotels, there’s lots of small businesses and restaurants and those things. And I think they’ll find that they’ll have a lot more foot traffic than they’ve seen prior. … That’s where those local small businesses capture the benefits a lot of the time,” Woods says. In addition to that direct visitor spending, there are also what economists call indirect and induced impacts from contracts that arise from major sporting events. In the case of the Super Bowl, NFL vendors and event producers contract with local companies for things like security or landscaping. And the people who are hired end up spending money in the local economy, as well. In fact, the NFL and the Las Vegas Super Bowl Host Committee have a program in place to
L A S V E G A S W E E K LY
help facilitate NFL vendor contracts with local businesses. The Business Connect program was announced in December 2022, inviting minority, woman, LGBTQ, disability and veteran-owned businesses to apply to be profiled in the NFL Business Connect Resource Guide. The guide is used by NFL vendors and event producers to identify local suppliers to fulfill their Super Bowl subcontracting needs, from audio visual to event décor to waste removal. “We ended up with just over 200 businesses invited to participate,” says Myisha Boyce, chief community engagement officer for the Super Bowl Host Committee, the private nonprofit created to act as a liaison between the host city and the NFL. Those 200 businesses went through “capacity building” workshops to get them up to snuff to work with the NFL, including seminars on social media and branding, cybersecurity, preparing requests for proposals (documents that businesses must prepare in order to compete for contracts), and a series of “meet the vendor” workshops where business owners could meet procurement representatives. “It is the smallest and most deserving and hardest-working business owners. How would the NFL find them if it weren’t for a program like Business Connect?” Boyce says. “What the program does is it recognizes that people from diverse backgrounds often don’t have the same level of access and opportunity. And this program intends to level that playing field.” Say what you want about sporting events in this town; through increased visitation, sports tourism and the small business initiatives of the Host Committee, the Super Bowl will help Las Vegas’ overall economy to keep on growing. “Nothing was ever intended to be short-term or just in preparation for the game. Everything was designed to have life long after,” Boyce says.

Regardless of your interests, February is jam packed with something for everyone, anchored by events such as the Big Game, Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year. Whatever your flavor, consider incorporating cannabis into this month’s festivities.
Lunar New Year—February 10 Lunar New Year begins February 10 and includes 15 days of recognition. Celebrations vary by culture and country, but one of the most common traditions is the lion dancers who help welcome the New Year and bring good fortune. This year is the year of the Dragon, which represents power, success, honor and luck in the Chinese zodiac. If you won’t be celebrating in a traditional manner, consider entering this fortuitous year with a Firebird Infused preroll.
The Big Game—February 11 Though the Big Game isn’t a holiday, it sure feels like one. The 58th installment will be in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium, with the Kansas City Chiefs facing off against the San Francisco 49ers for a matchup you won’t want to miss. If you’re not in it for the game itself, Usher will be headlining the halftime show with special guests. And we can’t forget about the food. Whether you’re throwing a party or attending one, almost any recipe can be infused with cannabis. Neon Moon offers the perfect solution when you need cannabis in bulk for cooking. Just make sure to measure precisely and inform anyone taking a bite.
Valentine’s Day—February 14 Chocolate, cherubs and cannabis—what more could you ask for on Valentine’s Day? Whether celebrating with a loved one or flying solo, this holiday is a great opportunity to reflect on all kinds of love in your life, including self-love. Put on a romcom, draw a bath and light a preroll. You deserve it. Bluebirds flower and prerolls come in a variety of THC percentages, which is perfect for scaling to any activity. You might prefer something more mellow for time alone or something a little punchier if celebrating with a partner.
Several studies have examined how cannabis may increase sexual arousal, pleasure and satisfaction. While research is still being done, anecdotally, there’s a link between cannabis and sexual pleasure. If this is true for you, don’t forget to hit the dispensary before Valentine’s Day.

ADVERTORIAL PRESENTED BY D E E P R O OT S H A RV E S T
President’s Day —February 19
President’s Day may not come with many observances, but this is an election year, and we all deserve to take the edge off. Plus, any excuse for a long weekend is a good thing. Firebird prerolls are infused for a higher THC percentage than traditional prerolls. This President’s Day, consider a couch-lock situation.
Leap Day—February 29
It only occurs once every four years, so we may as well make the most of the 366-day year by celebrating what some consider a lucky day. If you’re inclined to observe but don’t have a starting point, consider Neon Moon, a bulk flower perfect for making edibles, oil, or just ingesting as is. Pair an extra day with extra cannabis.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTS Bluebirds, Firebird and Neon Moon are all expertly cultivated in Mesquite by a team of growers who are focused on enhancing and maximizing each harvest from seed to sale. BLUEBIRDS FLOWER AND PREROLLS offer a wide variety of strains to enjoy, including fan favorites, such as Gorilla Goo and Apples and Bananas. FIREBIRD is a line of infused prerolls, upping the ante on potency and flavor. With THC percentages of 25%-40%, these prerolls are created with a Bluebirds flower base and infused with a live resin concentrate. NEON MOON is created to be a blast from the past— a mellow, mood-boosting cannabis that seeks to remind consumers about youthful summer concerts, backyard barbecues, and casual gatherings with friends. It’s also sold in increments up to one ounce at the right price.

HIP HOP HOORAY
Guess what genre is taking over Las Vegas for the big weekend?

Usher’s many R&B hits may be providing the soundtrack for the first Super Bowl in Las Vegas, as the former Park MGM and Caesars Palace resident headliner performs during the halftime show at Allegiant Stadium, but hiphop is dominating the rest of the weekend at concerts, clubs and massive special event parties. Here are some of the artists taking the field—er, stage—in the next few days: The opening of the Wu-Tang Clan residency at the Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (Feb. 9-10, axs.com) would be a history-making event on any weekend. Members of the group popped up during
CES at the intimate Voltaire at Venetian for a cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together,” a tiny tease of what’s to come at Virgin. Will the Wu add interesting new production elements as other resident artists have done on the Vegas stage? Or will they stick to the hit-heavy setlist from last year’s NY State of Mind tour? Lil Wayne is one of the iconic rappers who’ll be pulling extra duty this weekend, joining Diplo and Shaquille O’Neal at the Shaq’s Fun House party at XS (Feb. 9, wynnsocial.com) before teaming with Alesso and T-Pain for the Michelob Ultra Country Club event taking over Topgolf (Feb. 10,
michelobultra.com/ultracountryclub) and showing up at the Sahara Theatre (Feb. 10, ticketmaster.com). And speaking of T-Pain, the versatile rapper and singer will start his new residency at Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World on February 9 (zoukgrouplv.com). And then there’s 50 Cent, who’s co-headlining the annual Maxim party (see page 26) with 21 Savage on February 10 at Resorts World (maximsb. com) and also hosting an oversized extravaganza at Area15 after the Super Bowl (Feb. 11, area15.com). Ikon Presents is putting on that party and another one Saturday at Area15’s
A-Lot. Soul-trap pioneer Rod Wave leads a roster that also includes DaBaby, Big Charm and singer Summer Walker (Feb. 10, area15.com). The H.wood Group, Wynn Nightlife and Uncommon Entertainment are joining forces to create a pop-up venue just across the street from Wynn to host the H.wood Homecoming, an “experiential nightlife experience.” Future will perform there with David Guetta on February 9, and Jack Harlow stars with Kaytranada and Zack Bia on February 10 (hwoodhomecoming.com). Drai’s at the Cromwell always brings hip-hop’s heavy hitters to the Strip and the
Super Bowl will be no different. Other than Chris Brown’s return on February 9, it’s all rap on the rooftop with Rick Ross, Meek Mill and Lil Baby (draisgroup.com). Tao Group Hospitality’s nightclubs kick off the hip-hop festivities with performances including Fat Joe at Tao (Feb. 8), TIP at Hakkasan (Feb. 8), Tyga at Hakkasan (Feb. 9), Jermaine Dupri at Tao (Feb. 9), Lil Jon at Marquee (Feb. 9), Nelly at Marquee (Feb. 10), and Travis Scott at Hakkasan (Feb. 10, taogroup.com). And Zouk has one of the most compelling combos lined up in 2 Chainz and Saweetie (Feb. 10, zoukgrouplv.com).

CSN’s Dark Side of the Moon planetarium show is Pink Floyd in interstellar overdrive BY GABRIELA RODRIGUEZ On a recent Saturday I found myself seated at my local planetarium. Previously, I wasn’t aware that our city even had a public astronomical theater, nor did I ever expect to spend an evening at one for entertainment purposes. But a unique planetarium program—a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon—is precisely what drew me to this unconventional weekend outing. The College of Southern Nevada’s Dale Etheridge Planetarium is showcasing an immersive experience that visualizes the iconic album with celestial sights guaranteed to leave audiences dizzy with curiosity and wonder. And what better way to experience “The Great Gig in the Sky” than underneath a manmade dome with starry projections and a surround sound system that makes the hair on your arms raise? “I like to keep our programming fresh throughout the year, and add the latest planetarium shows to our catalog whenever possible,” says Lisa Goodman, education coordinator at the planetarium. “Pink Floyd’s immersive planetarium show has really generated a great deal of attendees.” She’s not wrong. Within
the planetarium’s unassuming walls I discovered dozens of attendees, whose ages spanned generations, lining up to find their seats. The English psych-rock band has had a tenacious grip on audiences since its early 1960s debut. The extended mind-bending instrumentals, angelic vocals and thought-provoking lyricism of Pink Floyd transcends the five decades since Dark Side of the Moon, bringing audiences into a timeless realm. The planetarium’s album-length interstellar adventure not only does the album justice; it also re-sparks the joy of hearing it in its entirety. While these 42 minutes alone might be enough of a draw for any music lover, Goodman points out that the planetarium has more to offer. Its concept-driven shows rotate monthly. There’s an Astronaut Wall of Fame available for viewing, plus a telescope observatory and ambassadors of astronomy who can answer any burning questions you may have about space. “The sky is not the limit and the possibilities are endless for the types of live entertainment we can offer inside the planetarium dome,” Goodman says.
THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON IMMERSIVE PLANETARIUM SHOW Through March 30; Friday & Saturday, 9 p.m., $10, Dale Etheridge Planetarium, csnplanetarium.square.site.

TEEING OFF A look ahead at next-level sports venue Atomic Golf BY AMBER SAMPSON Golf has always been one of the quieter spectator sports. But Atomic Golf, a new $75 million mega complex, has plans to perfect your swing while you party. The 100,000-square-foot golf range, a flagship of Flite Golf & Entertainment, started construction next to the Strat in December 2022 and is on track to open in the first quarter of this year. Located minutes away from the Arts District and the Strip, Atomic Golf occupies a coveted piece of territory, with 103 hitting bays facing the western mountain ranges and its eastern side overlooking the bustling urban sprawl of Las Vegas Boulevard and Main Street. Last fall, we threw on a hard hat and toured the grounds. What we discovered is that this seemingly simple golf range is also taking a big swing at entertainment, putting itself on par with offerings you might see on the Strip. “We are pushing the limits of the newest, greatest entertainment and event complex in the city. Golf is part of it, of course, but we’re hyper-focused on technology,” says Ashley Vaughn, national director of sales at Atomic Golf. Vaughn says projections show more than 60% of people who visit the venue won’t be golfers— and they’ve meticulously planned for that. The space houses two VIP suites; two kitchens led by Las Vegas chef and Guy’s Grocery Games winner Robert Lomeli; the Cosmic Lounge, a swanky spot made trippy thanks to programmable LED screens being outfitted in the floors (an idea one of the owners got from a trip to Europe, Vaughn says); and six bars, including the exclusive Tap Room on the third floor. “This is where we’re highlighting how much we’re leaning into the local community. We’ve commissioned local artists to paint murals, put their artwork on the wall throughout here,” Vaughn says of the Tap Room, which utilizes Bottoms Up tech
to disperse beer from the bottom of the glass. “We also have 15 different beers from local breweries, so where lots of guests have experienced the breweries in the Arts District, we’re bringing them all to one spot.” During our tour, Vaughn proudly unveiled the main artery of the building, the Astrocade. It’s a megasized watch party zone, anchoring attention spans with a 40-foot LED screen that’s set to air all Vegas Golden Knights games and more. All four levels of Atomic Golf, no matter where you are, look down at the Astrocade. In fact, you can pretty much see from one end of Atomic Golf to the other, thanks to a beautiful, open-floor concept. “The space is so customizable and flexible. We can make it what we want. And then of course, there’s the game,” Vaughn says. “That part, we’re really leaning into a video game style of experience. We actually have commissioned some video game designers specifically to design games just for our venue.” Golf balls are tracked with proprietary technology as they’re slugged out onto the 212-yard range. The urge to gamify the games even more has also been discussed, Vaughn says. Stats from golfers are saved and the venue’s even in the early development stages of creating a campaign mode where you can continue games during another visit. If you’re still perfecting your swing, visit Atomic Golf’s putting district on the first floor, which deploys projection mapping on the mini course. It’s a good alternative for a chill, less competitive experience (unless you invite that intense friend who’s excessively good at Wii Sports golf). The lush lawns of a private country club are tough to beat, but Vaughn believes Atomic Golf, with its climate-controlled bays and immediate gratification of gamified play, has the power to pull pro players away from the real thing. “I think it’s a complement to it,” she says. “It’s another way to enjoy golf. We truly believe that there’s something for every level of golfer.”

FULL SAVORY CIRCLE Fugetsu Okonomiyaki Izakaya fills out our Japanese cuisine scene BY JIM BEGLEY Those who know me know my fascination with okonomiyaki, a Japanese street food akin to savory pancakes not readily available in the States. I may have lamented, right here in the Weekly, the lack of this dish in our otherwise incredible local Japanese cuisine. And like many of you, I am equally enamored with izakayas—Japanese drinking establishments with food which are certainly more common, but not ubiquitous. So when I noticed the opening of an okonomiyaki izakaya on Spring Mountain Road months ago, I couldn’t have been happier—and it does not disappoint. Fugetsu Okonomiyaki Izakaya, a chain originating from Osaka, first opened with an a la carte-only menu and a blackboard of daily specials. It has since transitioned to all-you-can-eat while maintaining the a la carte menu. While the opening setup was certainly edgier, it’s still a unique dining destination. It might take a doctorate to explain all the iterations of AYCE policies, ranging in price from $27 to $40 in addition to drink packages and add-ons. So simplify and choose depending upon your tastes and appetites, because any AYCE option allows for half-price on a handful of premium dishes; handpicking and paying for premiums at the lower price may work to your benefit.
Begin with the garlic edamame ($7), smoky, garlicky, and emanating of umami. Equally worthwhile is the ribeye beef tataki ($10), wading in a sharp ponzu sauce. A real treat is asparagus with mayo cheese ($6.50) because you get credit for eating your grilled vegetables even when they’re swaddled in a delicious mayonnaise-cheese concoction. And don’t overlook the spicy chili tofu ($4.50) with a surprising kick. There are numerous menu sections, ranging from sashimi—which includes savory seared ankimo ($9.50), aka monkfish liver, essentially the foie gras of the sea—and sushi rolls to grilled dishes and takoyaki, although the kushiyaki skewers seem to have slipped off the menu. But the star of the show is that okonomiyaki. One of my cardinal rules as both a food writer and prolific eater is when a restaurant has a dish in its name, you must try it. My go-to okonomiyaki is the pork version ($14) topped with cheese ($3.50), and always upgrade to modanyaki ($3.50), adding noodles. You’ll get a cabbage and flour pancake layered with meat and cheese atop griddled noodles. For fancier tastes, the unagi ikura ($26) combines freshwater eel and salmon roe for the essence of the ocean. Regardless your choice, you’ll love it. With an ample sake menu—I’m a fan of the Dewazakura Dewasanan, if you’re looking for a suggestion—and other Japanese alcohol options befitting an izakaya, you’ll have plenty of libations to whet your palate. So there’s no reason not to grab a group of friends and get a round of okonomiyaki in a dive into Osakan street food right here in the Vegas Valley.

Sweet treats are works of art at Donutique Homer Simpson once said, “Donuts! Is there anything they can’t do?” This sentiment takes on a new level of indulgence at Donutique, a luxurious haven where doughy delights aren’t only a treat for your tastebuds, but also for your eyes. Since opening last August near the “Love” sculpture at Venetian’s Waterfall Atrium, Donutique has quickly gained attention for its sweet offerings, highly Instagrammable furnishings and “it girl” ambiance. Those who aren’t yet hip to the spot will walk in and immediately notice that this isn’t the typical mom and pop bakery. Instead, the decor includes flower arrangements, chandeliers and artwork with a coquettish charm blended with an edgy vibe through graffiti accents. It’s as if Marie Antoinette picked up a spray can and had some fun. And it’s hard to not appreciate the artistry that goes beyond the storefront. These doughnuts are crafted by one of our favorite local pastry chefs, Keris Kuwana. You’ll have the urge to box up the entire selection, but here are a few must-tries to nibble on during your initial visit: the birthday cake doughnut has a vanilla glaze and is topped with housemade pastel rainbow sprinkles and a three layer mini cake ($9); the tiramisu is filled with a balanced coffee mousse that perfectly pairs with coffee glaze ($10); and the blueberry-yuzu doughnut is stuffed with a rich compote and yuzu mousse, glazed with blueberry frosting and topped with a candied lemon slice and meringue kisses ($9). As you prepare to dig in, you’ll likely be seduced by the aromatics from the coffee bar, where skilled baristas can craft anything from a dirty iced matcha to a rich, velvety latte. Thanks to the chef ’s artisanal approach, Donutique stands out as a sweet experience that’ll have locals coming back and visitors talking about it nonstop. –Gabriela Rodriguez DONUTIQUE Venetian, 702-909-8230, donutique. com. Abingdon Mullin, CEO and founder of Abingdon Co., holds a WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) watch at the Abingdon watch store. WASP was a civilian women pilots’ organization founded during World War II. (Steve Marcus/Staff)

bingdon Mullin always wanted to be a pilot. So, when she completed flight training, she wanted to buy herself something nice—a pilot’s watch. That’s when she learned what a gap in the market there was for pilot watches designed with women in mind. She realized she wasn’t alone, Mullin said, while hanging out with a group of girlfriends who were also pilots. “One of the women said, ‘I’ve always wanted a pilot’s watch,’” she recalled. “‘That’s always been on my wish list, (but) nobody will ever make anything.’” As a result, Mullin made it her goal to learn how to make watches and create a pilot’s watch for women. They only represented 6% of the market, she said, so nobody believed a watch company would bother with them. By 2007, she had created her first watch and launched her brand, Abingdon Co., which at the time went by a different name and solely offered pilot watches. In the nearly 20 years since then, during which time she moved to Las Vegas and appeared on Shark Tank, Mullin has expanded her store to create not just pilot watches for women, but also watches for women in a variety of other spaces—from the automotive industry to diving. Eventually, its range of watches and their uses led Abingdon Co. to coin the motto, “watches for women who do more.” “It’s strange that the watch industry has really considered women an afterthought,” Mullin said. “They’ll make a men’s watch, and then they’ll say, ‘Oh, hey, let’s make it pink, make it small, and we’ll call it a lady’s watch.’ ” Abingdon Co. has about a dozen employees and grew 68% from 2022 to 2023, servicing thousands of customers in about 20 countries, said Mullin, who emphasized her support for other women-owned businesses seeing similar growth. “We’re a driving force,” Mullin said. “I mean, women in this city, they don’t slouch around.” A new study looking at the economic impact of women-owned businesses overall seems to prove her point. The 2024 Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Business Report showed that the latter represent nearly 40%, or over
14 million, of businesses in the economy— employing more than 12 million workers and generating $2.7 trillion in revenue. Women-owned businesses are also increasing at nearly double the rate of maleowned businesses, which was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when women-owned businesses added 1.4 million jobs and almost $580 billion in revenue, according to the report. Val Jones, women’s segment lead for small business at Wells Fargo, said she wasn’t surprised by the number of women-owned businesses that were formed during the pandemic, but rather by the amount of revenue they generated and their ability to hire employees—a marked difference from what women-owned businesses went through during the Great Recession. One of the biggest differences between the Great Recession and the pandemic, she said, was the number of government, corporate and philanthropic programs aimed at keeping small businesses afloat. “And so we also saw special programs just for women during that time, as well,” Jones said. “Acknowledging that they had faced systemic barriers to capital and didn’t have quite the same network that we would see in our male counterparts —and those interventions also made a difference. So the takeaway is that we should not stop doing those things. We proved that they’re effective.” The report also broke down the impact of women-owned businesses by different demographics—finding that Black women and Latina entrepreneurs emerged stronger than all women-owned employers—and by geography. The latter ranked Las Vegas 28th for “economic clout,” when it comes to supportive environments for women-owned businesses. Women influence 80 cents of every dollar spent in the U.S., not to mention other factors that may affect spending like their health, age, active lifestyles and more, Mullin said from her new storefront in Downtown Las Vegas. “If we are living longer, and we’re inheriting more and we’re spending more money, and we’re starting more businesses, and we’re influencing the men around us to go spend money,” Mullin said, “well, you add all of those things together, and it would be silly for companies to ignore the female market.”

PREMIER CROSSWORD “MECHANICS OF SOLVING” BY FRANK LONGO
HOROSCOPES WEEK OF FEBRUARY 8 BY ROB BREZSNY ARIES (March 21-April 19): In honor of the Valentine season, I offer you a love letter by an Aries friend: “We will seize the sexiest joy we can conjure. We will turn each other into boisterous deities in quest of liberation from all unnecessary limitations. We will tenderly shock each other with mysterious epiphanies and rivers of bliss.” TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to get freer, more sensuous and more unconstrained. Dancing your inhibitions into oblivion will be an excellent way to pursue these goals. So will doing everything with a dancer’s abandon, including love-making. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to pursue uproarious amusement while enjoying the arts of intimacy—both in and out of bed. (PS: Playwright Rose Franken said, “Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly.”) CANCER (June 21-July 22): Is there an aspect of your reincarnational history that aids your current destiny? Or are there past events in your current life that are becoming more influential? The coming weeks will be a good time to meditate on these possibilities. Check in with the spirits of your ancestors and departed allies to see if they have any inspirational messages for you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Author Kevin Kelly observed, “Listening well is a superpower. While listening to someone you love, keep asking them ‘Is there more?’ until there is no more.” This is excellent advice for you. I urge you to specialize in gathering the deep revelations of those you care for. Opening yourself to them in unprecedented ways will boost your soul power and enrich your wisdom. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Imagine you are walking on a hill at night. You are headed to meet a person you adore, who awaits you with champagne and chocolate. The weather is balmy. The moon is full. You are singing songs you both love, announcing your arrival. When you arrive, dear Virgo, what will you tell your beloved to make them feel supremely understood and appreciated?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Has your approach to togetherness become infused with habit or numbness? Now is an excellent time to rev up your imagination as you upgrade intimacy, companionship and collaboration. I hope you will authorize your fantasy life to be lush, unruly and experimental. Spur yourself to dream up departures from routine that intrigue your close allies. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Author W. Somerset Maugham testified, “My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world with surprise and horror.” Is that true about you, Scorpio? Even if it is, I’m guessing the horrifying aspects will be nonexistent in the coming weeks. From what I can tell, everything will at least be educational and colorful. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The Valentine season is looming, and many of us are receptive to advice about togetherness. Here’s some from novelist Graham Joyce: “Two people in love don’t make a hive mind. Neither should they want to be a hive mind, to think the same, to know the same. It’s about being separate and still loving each other, being distinct from each other. One is the violin string, one is the bow.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Lately, I have been intoxicated a lot. Not because I’ve ingested drugs and alcohol. I’ve felt so wildly free and euphoric because life has been dismantling some of my fears. I bring this to your attention because I suspect you may soon also get intoxicated through the loss of fears. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): I have been entangled in a lot of romantic love during my time on Earth, and most of it has been interesting, educational and therapeutic. I am deeply grateful for ALL of it, even the heartbreaks. Any wisdom I have developed owes a great debt to my lovers. What about you, Aquarius? Where do you stand on these issues? I suspect the coming months will provide you with ample reasons to embrace my attitudes. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In my view, Pisces, all of us should keep evolving our relationship with eros. There is always more to discover and explore about the mysteries of our desires. Always more to learn about what excites and inspires us. The coming days will be an excellent time for you to enjoy this research.
