Surf’s Up, Dudes!

Poolside attraction mimics ocean waves for max fun

Surfing a wave in the middle of a desert? Pish! But it’s too true … kinda. Head over to Planet Hollywood’s the Scene Pool Deck and check out FlowRider, a watery attraction that pumps out machine-made waves.

Riders can ride the waves classic surf style (or bodyboard style if standing up on the board is a little too scary). But don’t worry about falling, as FlowRider is built with a special surface that absorbs impacts. There is also an instructor on hand—they’ll help guide you into the waves and hold on to your arms or hands until you feel steady enough to conquer the waves on your own.

Masters of the board will also enjoy FlowRider thanks to its special wave simulation technology that really does mimic what you might find out on the ocean on an optimal surfing day.

Guests must be at least 42 inches to bodyboard and at least 48 inches to surf standing up. And it goes without saying, riders must be able to swim comfortably in case, you know, you wipe out and all. Day passes are available for purchase so you can surf FlowRider multiple times throughout the day, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

It’s a Celebration

Get down on it at this iconic group’s residency

My introduction to Kool & The Gang was in 1977—the year I first listened to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. They had but one song on that monstrously successful album, “Open Sesame,” but it quickly became one I returned to again and again. From its opening gong to its deep funk groove and its One Thousand and One Nights -themed lyrics, this is a song designed to get you on your feet and swaying like no one’s watching.

This song perfectly encapsulated two things: The wackiness, anything-goes vibe of the disco era; and Kool & the Gang’s ability to take any material and turn it into an instant classic. There’s a reason we’re still hearing this group’s vast array of hits across all platforms (TV, movies, commercials and more)—their sense of fun and propulsive beats is timeless. And they will be bringing that everlasting party to a variety of dates at Westgate Las Vegas until late 2024.

Just like me in 1977, generations of listeners will be familiar with Kool & The Gang for reasons of their own: Maybe you first heard them in the ’80s during the movie Jumping Jack Flash (“Misled”); maybe your first exposure was in the ’90s during the opening scenes of Pulp Fiction (“Jungle Boogie”); maybe you comedy fans first got the Kool kraving from Legally Blonde in 2001 (“Get Down On It”); or maybe you younger tykes first danced to their music in 2012 during the opening scenes of Wreck-It Ralph (“Celebration”). And odds are all those different age groups will be in the aisles of the International Theater, exchanging high fives when the group launches into “Ladies Night.”

What’s that? Not a big movie fan? And not really into the “classics”? Well, odds are you’ve been a fan of the band’s sound and not even known it. Kool & Kompany have been sampled in more songs than we have space to list here, from “Summer Madness” (sampled in “You Know How We Do It” by Ice Cube) to “N.T.” (sampled in “N.Y. Downtown property launches weekly fireworks program

Summer is about to get a whole lot more fun in downtown Las Vegas. Starting on May 24 and going until Aug. 30, Plaza will offer a fireworks show from its towers at 9:15 p.m. every Friday, complete with a special guest “igniting” them by pushing a detonator button on an oversized TNT box.

“The Plaza is known for its great fireworks on New Year’s Eve and July 4th, but who says fireworks are only for those holidays?” said Jonathan Jossel,

CEO of the Plaza Hotel & Casino, in a press release. “This summer, we wanted to celebrate and give a gift to everyone downtown by sharing the excitement and fun of our fireworks shows with them every Friday night.”

The property’s Welcome to the Weekend Summer Friday Fireworks, inspired by the fireworks shows at Disneyland, will also feature a rooftop pool party for hotel guests, complete with themed cocktails like the Frozen Fire-

cracker, a cocktail featuring all the colors of the American flag and featuring strawberry daiquiri, pina colada and blue lemonade spiked with Don Q rum. Hitting the Bull’s-Eye on Brunch and Fun

Social darts venue offers daytime recreation while you eat

Sitting down at a table for brunch is sooo yesterday. Throwing lil’ pointy things at a target while munching on a breakfast flatbread is where it’s at. More succinctly, Flight Club is where you want to brunch.

The social darts entertainment venue just launched its new brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Guests get to book a 90-minute reservation that includes a private oche (pronounced like “hockey” without the “h”) where you can dine, drink and play darts. Enjoy playing a variety of different dart games through Flight Club’s own proprietary scoring system, which tracks the darts’ scores so you don’t have to keep track of the points yourself.

Beating your opponent always works up an appetite, and at Flight Club the brunch options are plentiful and delicious. We suggest trying the bottomless options for a really decent price. You can order bottomless mimosas (in flavors like classic, cranberry and pineapple) that come in a cool, picture-worthy tower for just $47. For just $37 you can order bottomless flatbreads and mix and match. Our favorite recipes include the breakfast flatbread with crispy prosciutto, fontina cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms, arugula,

fried egg and balsamic glaze, and the smoked salmon flatbread with whipped cream cheese, everything bagel spice, cold smoked salmon, crispy capers, shaved red onion, chive crème fraîche, lemon zest and fresh dill. And the four-cheese flatbread has a real nice spice to it. If you want both bottomless options, it’s only $57!

The brunch menu offers more than just flatbreads, though, and you can order a la carte if that’s a better option. Dig into breakfast-y delights like sliders with scrambled eggs, maple-glazed pork belly, cheddar cheese, peppers and onions on a brioche bun and the avocado toast on multigrain bread with sprouts, pickled red onion, microgreens, pumpkin seeds and olive oil. And not to be missed are the churros, pictured, with caramel filling and a dulce de leche whipped cream.

Fight Club offers an impressive specialty cocktail menu, too. Our faves are The Panda with bourbon, honey whiskey and peach, and The Capuchin with mezcal, ancho chili, pineapple and Tajín—just enough bite to help you beat your dart competition. –Kiko Miyasato

Summer fun series kicks off with free, fun, family-friendly activities

If you hit up Vegas a couple of times during the summer, you’ll want to check the free Summer Vibes events at FSLV— Fashion Show Las Vegas, happening several Saturdays a month through the end of July. It all starts this week on May 24-26 with a variety of family-friendly activations in the Great Hall, a block party atmosphere all centered around the art installation Mi Casa, Your Casa

The whimsical red-home frames of Mi Casa, Your Casa, reminiscent of green-

house structures, run up and down the length of the hall, with swings and seating that encourage you to slow down and enjoy, and get a pic or two as well. The tiny houses, created by artists Esrawe + Cadena and produced by Canadian-based art agency Creos, have also appeared across the globe in multiple configurations in parks and public spaces.

Also this week, enjoy the Summer Saturdays series on May 25, including a DJ, break-dance performances, free

henna tattoos and much more. In June, enjoy activations that include celebrating PRIDE, creating art, enjoying free hair-braiding and taking part in a cornhole tournament. Good-for-you options pack this spring menu

One of the Strip’s healthiest menus is also one of the most delicious. True Food Kitchen at The Forum Shops at Caesars recently announced its spring menu and more than 20 new items. Some of the most intriguing are the yam and cheese sandwich, with Gouda, pickled vegetables and black garlic vinaigrette, plus thin-sliced yam, which creates a meaty feel, and the Bougie Blanco, a white pizza that layers Parmesan cream, black truffle and hot honey on a sourdough crust.

Speaking of which, earlier this year True Food Kitchen began serving all its pizza on sourdough. In a news release, True Food Kitchen’s CEO John Williams laid out the goals of the company’s new TRUE standards, which the pizza dough embodies: “We believe in the power of whole, real food. We partner with each of our growers, ranchers and producers so that every ingredient meets our TRUE standards. That means better food for you, your family, and the planet.”

Grass-fed beef is used in the ultimate pot roast beef dip, designed to capture the idea of both pot roast and a French dip. Other items include a Thai peanut noodle bowl and an Italian meatball sub, as well as cocktails featuring healthy ingredients. –Nina King

And if you complete the Particle Quest augmented reality experience, you’ll discover a cool light setting at Oddwood.

One of the most iconic figures at AREA15 is Mechan9, a half-buried robot created by Portland, Ore., artist Tyler Fuqua. It’s also an enigma to be solved, with secret hatches everywhere containing mysterious text unknown to any scholar. Are they pure decoration or clues as to its mysterious origins? Those who discover the truth about Mechan9 and decode the final message can redeem a special surprise (and delight) from an AREA15 ambassador.

Omega Mart is full of hilarious products and mysteries to explore, but their best-kept secret is actually Datamosh Bar, tucked away within the exhibition. Most Omega Mart shoppers walk right past it, searching for portals and other dimensions and overlook it entirely. If you’re lucky enough to find it (spoiler alert: it’s in the Pharmacy), you’ll also find that, like everything they do there, the drink options go beyond the ordinary and venture into the deliciously weird.

While enjoying a bottle of Signal Lager, a Mexican-style beer from Able Baker Brewing available at various locations throughout AREA15, scan the QR code on the back to unlock and solve puzzles.

Vineyard, Vegas Style

This wine and spirits lounge is one of the city’s oldest and best-kept secrets

Celebrate National Wine Day, May 25, or celebrate wine any day, all day, at the city’s vino hidden gem, The Wine Cellar at Rio Las Vegas. This place is literally hidden underneath the property, operating and impressing wine connoisseurs and newbies since 1997. Take the winding staircase down to a Tuscan-inspired cellar with wrought iron, wine barrels, brick, stone, fine furnishings, cozy nooks and an air of European chic. The lounge stores more than 1,000 bottles of fine wines and spirits, as well as rare and unlimited selections. Peruse wines from around the world as well as more singular selections like after-dinner wines, sparkling wines, ice wines and tawny ports. Fans of tequila, whiskey and bourbon can peruse an impressive, high-end list, too.

The least expensive glass of wine will run you about $15 a glass all the way up to $75; bottles start around $50 with rare options costing up to $3,500. But what’s great about The Wine Cellar is its flight options—a program that wine manager Hung Nguyen is very proud of, as he curates all the flights. “Every guest has a chance to try something here,” Nguyen says. “I welcome the

customer just like if they were coming to my house, and if they don’t like the flights that are on the menu I can put together a special flight for them. I have two rules down here in The Wine Cellar. Rule No. 1: Always have the guest walk in here and have the best time and the best value. And second rule is: Always follow rule No. 1.”

But fans of white or red shouldn’t miss two very delicious flights Nguyen has recently put together on the menu. (All flights include a 3-ounce pour of

three different selections). The first, Nothing But Buttery Chardonnay Flight, features Cakebread Cellars from Napa Valley, Duckhorn Migration from Russian River Valley and the Rombauer Carneros from Napa-Sonoma Valley. The second is for red wine lovers, Kevin’s Cab—Cabernet Sauvignon Flight, with Justin Isosceles from Paso Robles, Orin Swift Papillon from Napa Valley and Caymus from Napa Valley. For a real treat each flight, or any for that matter, can be accompanied by The

Rest assured though, if the wine world seems a little intimidating, Nguyen and everyone at The Wine Cellar couldn’t be more welcoming and accommodating while being some of the most knowledgeable in the field of wine and spirits. Over its tenure, The Wine Cellar has had too many repeat visitors to count, and that’s a testament to the service and overall offerings and experience.

Beauty and brains shined bright as she attended Oklahoma City University, where she earned a fine arts degree and was also crowned Miss Black Oklahoma in 2008. Talent came through when she sharpened her skills as a professional dancer, and while she thought she was Broadway bound, she ended up in Las

Top of the World rolls out new dishes for spring

When you return to a favorite restaurant in the spring or fall, one of the prime pleasures is enjoying new dishes and twists on signature items, thanks to the variety of fresh ingredients available at that time. Top of the World at The STRAT recently announced its spring menu refresh, and that’s sure to make your meal an exciting experience.

Start off with a great drink—Top of the World features a seasonal Old-Fashioned, plus a variety of

others created with Golden Entertainment’s private barrel selections, including Whistle Pig, W.L. Weller and Frey Ranch. You can also choose from other cocktails, wine, beer and spirits.

A fabulous Old-Fashioned deserves a great starter, and wait until you find out what is in store at Top of the World. The heirloom panzanella salad turns the traditional one on its side, serving up pieces of focaccia, shaved onion, roasted tomato and burrata with rosemary vinaigrette in

Berkshire “pastrami” pork chop

a colorful, flavorful dish. For seafood, the Fire & Ice display includes clams, oysters, poached shrimp king crab, mussels and a 16-ounce Australian lobster tail with garlic butter, sauces and grilled bread. Another impressive appetizer, the baked ricotta sacchetti (aka beggar’s purse pasta) comes with tomato vodka sauce and burrata, creating a pretty setting on the plate. The same goes for the Skull Island prawns, huge Australian crustaceans with distinctive striping.

You’ll find several interesting mains, such as a vegan wild mushroom Bolognese with rigatoni and cashew cream, crab- and scal-

lop-staffed sole and Berkshire “pastrami” pork chop. For a flavor punch, try the garlic-Parmesan fries, which are topped tableside by shaved black truffle. For lobster lovers, the linguini and meatballs provides an unusual combination of lobster meatballs and a lobster and roasted tomato sauce.

Top of the World’s beef program is strong, and you’ll find offerings from ranches in Colorado, California, Kansas and Australia, with filets, rib caps, tomahawks and more, as well as a plethora of toppers and sauces.

Carrie Underwood’s Reflection residency has become her Las Vegas home away from home

There are two live venues every Carrie Underwood fan should make a pilgrimage to. Underwood has performed multiple dates at the Grand Ole Opry, country music’s most hallowed hall, nearly every year since being invited to become a member by Randy Travis in 2008. Her other performing home away from home is Resorts World Theatre, where Reflection: The Las Vegas Strip Residency is well into its second year as a top Strip entertainment draw.

Underwood has been embraced by Vegas since her debut as a headliner in December 2022, when she became the first artist

to play the venue’s high-ceilinged stage. Resorts World Las Vegas celebrated her March 10 birthday during her last slate of shows with propertywide tributes ranging from specialty drinks and dishes at restaurants to spa treatments. She was presented with a stunning, innovatively constructed portrait composed of 6,400 dice before her March 9 show and was serenaded by the audience with a roof-raising rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

What more could a country girl who hosts a Sirius XM show, Savior Sunday, want from headlining a gig in Sin City, other than the matching heart tattoos she got with her moth-

er and sisters last summer? There’s been no talk of an end to the residency. While being a working mom is tough, Underwood has managed to optimize her time as of late by confining her concerts to a handful of locations, including Vegas. Preparing for the Reflection experience can start with Underwood’s Sirius XM channels. Her weekly Savior Sunday spiritual show started on Carrie’s Country and now has its own daily channel featuring spirituals from her favorite artists, including Travis, Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. Thou Art,” which is part of her Reflection set, are in rotation. Her influences can be heard on recent shows Carrie’s Country Cousins Countdown and Carrie’s SHE-roes Countdown, while her Carr-dio high-energy music channel can provide the soundtrack to both pre-Vegas preparation workouts and post-Vegas recovery efforts. iTunes, meanwhile, provides a 20-song playlist reflecting the Reflection set beginning with opening number “Cowboy Casanova.”

Many of the musicians who play those songs live at Reflection have been with her for a long time. Music director and bassist Mark Childers is married to Underwood’s best friend Ivey, making the band something or a family affair. That has included guitarists Matt Reviere and Ed Eason, steel guitarist/ multi-instrumentalist Chad Jeffers, keyboardist Scott Sheriff, drummer Seth Rausch, violinist Jordan Lawson and background vocalist Sydni Perry as of late. Underwood picks up guitars, both acoustic and electric, during the show as well. She sought to make a spectacular with Reflection, and the results have been wildly successful. That’s partly due to the production with its pyrotechnics, dancers and aerialists. Fashion is a major aspect, with Underwood’s multiple wardrobe changes demonstrative of her good taste. Another is the enthusiasm that Underwood generates from fans, which is beyond her control but on full display at every Reflection performance.

O beat antics and artistic talents abound at Mad Apple

you know the defi nition of “double entendre,” you meet the criteria for being an audience member at next-level variety show Mad Apple Risqué comedy is the thread that ties the variety show’s dynamic acts together within a theater that has the only stage-side bar on the Strip. Ticket holders are encouraged to arrive early to order drinks and mingle with an assortment of cast members who clown around or perform sleight of hand before showtime.

This is the world Cirque du Soleil has created inside New York-New York. It’s an urban cabaret that brings together acrobatics, live music, singing, dancing, comedy, shadow puppetry and magic in an environment geared toward a more adult demographic than most Vegas productions. Emceed by “The GM” and given voice by singing music director Xharlie Black, Mad Apple makes an indelible floor-toceiling impression on all witnesses.

The show has 16 acts in its stable, with up to 13 starring in every performance. The common factor among them all is electricity. With a large mirrored Forbidden Apple as the set design centerpiece, the talent train usually begins with juggler Adam Kuchler before Taxi Tumblers Tomas Alemu and Tamrat Ayalew fl ip out the crowd with their variation on Icarian Games, a time-honored acrobatic tradition.

Erin Blaire’s high-altitude En Vogue act descends into view from above. Spinning in mid-air while a healthy head of human hair enables her to be suspended above the stage is an unforgettable sight to behold without feeling some sort of empathetic tingling in the scalp. It’s hard enough for limber people to do a split, let alone execute one

while supported by one’s own long locks. Blaire makes it look absolutely e ortless.

Gravity defying continues with the City of Dreams segment of the show featuring duo straps daredevils Stephen Brine and Sara Knauer, and single cradle specialists Dima Liubashenko and Lena Tereshchenko. Both acts are aerial and depend on strength, muscle memory and, above all, trust between partners.

Teamwork trust is the common denominator that creates synergy between the hoop diving and acro dunking teams during The Game, a segment of the show that’s also about split-second timing but more fantastic than gymnastic. The participants are blurs of motion as they dive through small circles or take basketballs places the sport’s inventors never imagined.

Gymnastics enthusiasts may recognize world champion bronze medalist Valentin Chetverkin demonstrating hand balancing skills, while rotating contraption Wheel of Death may be familiar to habitues of neo-circus productions. High-energy musical interludes and dynamic dance choreography keep the show moving at a brisk pace.

Black, a nephew of Nat King Cole and cousin to Natalie Cole, sings with Mad Apple ’s troupe of vocalists as well as leading the musicians. Trombonist/keytarist Tracyan Martin, trumpeter Isaac Tubb, sax player JF Blais and drummer Bruce Briggz are the original cast members among the ensemble, a testament to the fact that they have some of the most coveted gigs on the Strip in a show that has achieved must-see status among audiences seeking the adult side of Vegas entertainment.
