Behind the Curtain
As amazing as our entertainment scene is, it’s the human stories behind them that really intrigue us here at Las Vegas Magazine. After all, the offerings that bring tens of millions of people to the Strip every year wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the visionary talents behind them. And we love fi nding out more about those visionaries, often sitting down with them for exclusive interviews so we can pass that passion they engender and inspire onto you, our faithful readers.
This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine goes beneath the surface in three di erent areas of entertainment:
• The DJ scene. One of the hottest performers of the moment is Zedd, who began a new residency at Tao Beach Dayclub at The Venetian. He not only gave Las Vegas Magazine an exclusive interview, he posed for our cameras in an exclusive shoot (“The End Is Just the Beginning,” p. 32). See a side of this artist you’ve never seen before—and then get your tickets to a show that everyone will be talking about.
• The restaurant scene. Julian Serrano, the man behind so many of Las Vegas’ iconic restaurants, announced his retirement, as well as the closing of his award-winning Picasso at Bellagio. He talked to us about his achievements, favorite memories and much more (“A Momentous Career,” p. 40).

• Production shows. Cirque du Soleil continues to have amazing success on the Strip, but as new documentary Without a Net illustrates, it was not without great sacrifice. Check out our feature on Bellagio’s “O,” which dives into the very personal story behind the magic (“Human Performance,” p. 42).

Wax Workmanship
See incredibly detailed and realistic sculptures of your favorite stars at famous Las Vegas Strip attraction
Las Vegas is the city where you can see all your favorite music stars—both live onstage and re-created in wax at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas. The attraction’s latest lineup is a who’s who of the hottest music stars of the moment, and the most recent addition is arguably the biggest: Post Malone, pictured.
The figure, replicating the look Post Malone wore for his musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live in 2022, is dressed in a black Tom Ford suede jacket, turtleneck jumper, black jeans, cowboy boots and crystallized belt. Additional details, all donated by the performer himself, include Chrome Hearts hoop earrings and ring. The level of detail, right down to the hair on his mole, resulted in a figure so lifelike that Post Malone said, upon seeing it, said, “I literally thought that was a person!”
Another detail that will have his fans giddy is the beer-filled red cup he’s holding. And fans can “challenge” him to a game of neon beer pong as part of a new experience.
“Post Malone’s impact on music and pop culture is undeniable, and we’re thrilled to bring his dynamic persona to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas,” said Linsey Stiglic, marketing manager at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, in a press release. “Post Malone is having quite the
year for iconic collabs—Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen, to name a few. We’re proud to have worked with the multigenre artist on his incredible new wax figure.”
Joining Post Malone are:
• Reggaeton star J Balvin, wearing a floral three-piece suit (a perfect re-creation of his 2021 Moschino Met Gala ensemble).
• Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, the most tattooed wax likeness in Madame Tussauds’ history—more than 100.
• Rapper Jack Harlow, decked out in the custom-designed suit he wore in his music video for “Churchill Downs (feat. Drake).”
• Three-time Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who also has a figure at the Madame Tussauds in New York.
• Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny, posed in front of a purple semi decked out with flames (inspired not only by the cover for El Último Tour Del Mundo, but also by his outfit, hair and jewelry from the 2021 American Music Awards).

Fine-dining restaurant’s menu is filled with surprises
Aqua , a seafood-focused restaurant by celebrated chef Shaun Hergatt, recently announced new enhancements to the fine-dining menu and a special offer just for guests of the hotel.
The ornately designed space creates a welcoming feel, with space for those who want to enjoy themselves at the bar or large groups who want to dine in comfort seated in plush booths or at extended tables.
The menu is full of goodies, not only for seafood fans, but for meat fans as well. One of the driving forces behind Aqua’s dishes is Hergatt’s upbringing near the Australian coast, an area with abundant natural resources. That abundance is reflected in the menu choices here, with new items like a half-pound Maine lobster served in the shell or a shellfish platter with lobster, king crab and raw oyster ready for the feasting. New choices in fish include a red snapper served with corn salsa, baby basil and tomato vinaigrette, and a Chilean sea bass with potato purée, hon shimeji mushrooms (those delicious clusters of delicate brown beech fungi) and chili oil.
You’ll also find several additions to the beef menu like Creekstone Farms prime ribeye and prime filet,
plus Australian imports of wagyu strip loin and wagyu tomahawk from Master Selections. Sharing is encouraged in the form of the butterfly branzino accented by citrus relish, caper brown butter and microgreens.
Vegetarians won’t want to miss the handmade gnocchi with Parmesan cream and truffle, although the Thai red curry with mushrooms and butternut squash may excite your taste buds as well.
If you are a hotel guest, take advantage of the special Evening Kickoff Menu, a prix fixe dinner with such choices as Australian wagyu hangar steak, spicy fried chicken, pictured, gnocchi and caviar ball blackberry cheesecake. It’s only $85 and is served from 4-6 p.m., which means there’s plenty of time to get to a concert or nightclub afterward.
As you might have guessed, caviar is huge here. The Caspy Caviar section includes golden osetra and Kaluga (and special reserves of those) served with blinis, créme fraîche and chives. If you’re sitting at the bar, try a caviar flight for the ultimate experience. –Nina King

Get a touch of Las Vegas history at this downtown destination
If you’re a history buff or simply curious about the history of Las Vegas, get yourself downtown and check out El Cortez. The property is teeming with cool ways to experience the past, beginning with the exhibit From Gambling Town to Resort
Destination: The Epic Rise of Las Vegas
Guests can take the self-guided tour, curated by The Mob Museum, through one of the hotel’s long hallways which is lined on both sides with historic photographs and accompanying boxes of text that help tell the story of El Cortez as well as the city of Las Vegas and the famous,
and infamous, people that helped shape it.
After your tour, look for the stairwell with a sign that says “Vintage Hotel Rooms.” Head upstairs to check out the vintage corridor leading to the original 47 rooms of the El Cortez when it opened in 1941—you’ll pick up on the Havana-style décor, a nod to one-time owners Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lanksy. The hotel rooms are available to rent.
While upstairs, you can do as the dapper dudes did at the Speakeasy Barbershop for an old-school blade shave
and beard trim. The barbershop has been tucked in the corner of the original rooms for decades, and you’ll feel as if you’ve stumbled on a secret and stepped back in time.
Before leaving, head to The Parlor Bar & Lounge for a classic Manhattan and relax in the vintage surroundings before settling into the old-school restaurant Siegel’s 1941 for a classic prime rib dinner for only $19.95. Now that’s history-making! –Kiko Miyasato

Celebrity chef’s Strip restaurant shines from morning until night
Ever since Guy Fieri dominated the Awesome Pretzel cart racket in the Fernwood, Calif., of his adolescence, he’s always taken things to the next level. The graduate of University of Las Vegas’ hospitality program parlayed an education in Sin City and exposure on the Food Network into a food-and-beverage empire, with jewels such as Guy Fieri’s Las Vegas Kitchen & Bar
You can bet Fieri starts off his days of empire building with a hearty breakfast, and his restaurants serve up dishes worthy of his appetite. From 10 a.m. to noon, enjoy dishes like Guy’s Big Bite Burrito and Breakfast Sausage, Bacon + Eggs, which both make lunch plans unnecessary. The latter is self-explanatory, save for a side of seasoned potatoes. The former stuffs potatoes, scrambled eggs, bacon and avocado in a cheese quesadilla doused with pico de gallo and salsa roja.
Motley Que Chilaquiles will satisfy all tastes with tortilla chips tossed with fire-roasted poblanos, pulled pork, avocado, crumbled cotija cheese and sunny-side up eggs. They’re best washed down with a choice of two different directions in tomato-based mixology, including Guy’s Famous BBQ Bloody Mary.
The wonderful scents emanating from Fieri’s restaurant from the outdoor patio make it an easy location for fans to mentally bookmark. He’s famous for towering nachos (pictured) and big, signature burgers like the Bacon Mac ‘N’ Cheese Burger, dressed with onion straws and donkey sauce and served in a garlic-buttered brioche bun.
The restaurant just celebrated its 10th anniversary, during which it added a Golden Monkey cocktail to the menu. The 60-ounce party bowl mixes Santo reposado tequila and pineapple juice with toasted coconut flakes and brûlée banana and comes with a take-home souvenir shot glass and gold skull bar pick. –Matt Kelemen

Shooting range offers a wide array of packages for all skill levels
Firearms owners see Las Vegas in a different light than the average visitor. The city provides an opportunity to spend a morning or afternoon brushing up on shooting skills and testing different weapons. The casual owner who doesn’t get much chance to handle their handguns at home can work target practice into a visit. Whatever skill level, it helps to be mindful of a destination with a landmark, like The Range 702’s shared latitude with the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.
Following a morning daytrip to the sign with a visit to The Range 702 combines two happenings in Vegas that go together like tacos and Tuesdays. You don’t have to settle for one menu item at Range 702, though. Located west of the Strip and Bali High Golf Club, the venue has 16 shooting ranges and machine gun experiences for all levels.
Aspiring firearms owners can start out with the Suns Out, Guns Out package designed for beginners, while adrenaline-craving life partners have a tai-
lor-made Couples Therapy option. Things get more intriguing from there with Black Ops, Area 51 and Judgement Day themes providing exciting scenarios.
The Range 702 offers a Femme Fatale designed to make ladies feel comfortable. People who never plan to own a gun can learn how to handle one. You never know when you may have to exercise a Constitutional right. –Matt Kelemen

Decade of Decadence
Nightclub
and dayclub celebrates 10 years of changing the game
Drai’s Beachclub and Nightclub at The Cromwell has taken its success to the top—literally and figuratively. This summer marks the venue’s 10-year anniversary, and the club sits pretty on the rooftop of the hotel, offering an open-air experience with to-die-for views of the Las Vegas Strip.
Dustin Drai, the president of Drai’s Management Group, recently reflect-
ed on the success of the past decade in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine
“It’s a testament to the staff; many are day one,” he said. “It’s a testament to us constantly changing and adapting to the market; never being complacent. I think the biggest thing is every day not being happy with the results, always looking to be better, to con-
stantly look at our business differently. Because of the adapting we’re able to do, it equals longevity.”
Longevity is something the Drai’s brand has a lock on. Dustin’s father, Victor, is a pioneer is Las Vegas nightlife, opening the city’s first after-hours club, Drai’s After Hours (in the basement of The Cromwell) nearly three decades ago. Dustin has followed in his

father’s footsteps, sharing the anecdote that his parents would bring him in his baby carrier to the after-hours club. “My mom would put my carrier on top of the bar,” he said, laughing. “I like to say that I’ve been in the nightlife industry for 30 years because from the moment I could open my eyes I was around it. I fell in love with it. It was just a natural instinct, and I really took the reins. I wanted to prove to everybody that I’m not just Victor Drai’s son but I’m actually worthy and good enough to do the job. I put pressure on myself to exceed (expectations). … I slowly grew through the company and understood the business and how to run it properly.”
To say he succeeded is a serious understatement. Dustin and the Drai’s team have successfully shifted the nightlife scene in Las Vegas. Drai’s Beachclub and Nightclub became the first venue to offer its guests full-blown concert performances by top artists in hip-hop and R&B.
“We wanted to be unique,” Dustin said. “And part of that was, let’s do live performances but let’s not just do two or three songs, let’s do full, 45-minute concerts, and that’s really what started setting us apart from everyone else

Drai’s After Hours stays open until around 6:30 a.m. Guests can enjoy hiphop and R&B music in the main room and the newly added house music room on Friday nights.
Fun fact: You’re closer to the Fountains of Bellagio than the customers staying at Bellagio.
Bungalows at the dayclub offer their own dipping pools.
The best tables in the nightclub, said Dustin, are the dancefloor VIP tables.
Over the years we’ve perfected that model and still today we’re one of the only clubs, if not the only club, that does the 45-minute to hour set concerts.”
Past performances have included everyone from The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Cardi B to G-Eazy, Rick Ross and Wiz Khalifa. And, of course, R&B superstar Chris Brown, whose shows have been some of Dustin’s favorite at Drai’s. “Chris Brown, his show is to die for,” he said. “When he puts on a show at Drai’s, it’s one of a kind.”
Whether its day or night, Drai’s Beachclub and Nightclub offers guests live entertainment that one simply can’t find at other party venues.
“At the dayclub, you’re going to experience live performances just like they would at the nightclub,” Dustin said. “They’re going to experience amazing hospitality. Plus, 20-foot-tall palm trees and an open-air rooftop. The nightclub, you’re going to experience a once-in-a-lifetime live performance in a venue that has been designed for live performances with LED screens all around, completely engulfing you
in the experience. You’re going to be so close to the artist you can touch them. … Whatever you’re celebrating or whatever reason you’re in Vegas, I encourage anybody to come experience Drai’s. When you come feel it, there’s such a special feeling. I’m very proud to be a part of it.” –Kiko Miyasato

Check in on the Amalfi Coast with Balla Italian Soul
On the north end of the Strip you’ll find Balla Italian Soul, a sweet joint with a patio that looks out to Las Vegas Boulevard. It’s chef Shawn McClain’s newest venture, with a menu that captures some of the most celebrated flavors and ingredients of Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Once you’re seated inside the bright restaurant, ask for a beverage menu, and it’s a beaut here, 26 pages of cocktails, beer and a great variety of wine from all over Italy, with sommelier recommendations, large-format wines and wines from other domestic and global sources. Plus, there are plenty of spirits o ered as well. You’ll even find a
couple of mocktails for those who don’t imbibe the heavier stu .
While you are contemplating your dinner choices, a little snacking will help whet the appetite—start with focaccia and taralli crackers (you may be familiar with the crunchy Italian rings). Other shareable treats include speck ham and summer melon; beets agrodolce, delivering a sweet-and-sour experience; margherita pizza with bu alo mozzarella and Genovese basil; and meatballs with Parmesan and fennel pollen.
Casarecce
Italian meals are traditionally served in multiple courses, so you’ll want to choose both pasta and a main. Balla Italian Soul serves several options for your pasta course. Plus, inventive choices of pasta will give you a great experience. For instance, you can get cannelloni Alfredo, featuring rotisserie chicken, or trottole presented with shrimp fra diavolo, ’nduja sausage, roasted peppers and mint. Garganelli is ribbed, giving the fennel sausage ragú sauce good purchase on the pasta. That comes with stracciatella cheese for the finishing touch. For a toothy, flavorful bite, the casarecce combines tomatoes, Calabrian peppers, basil and garlic. Classic spaghetti, elevated here with Dungeness crab, delivers seasonal squash blossoms, zucchini and lemon. Once you travel on to the mains portion of the menu, executive chef Michael Vargas has a variety of choices
for you. Seafood dishes range from light grilled prawns with white bean ragu to sea bream, a white fish with a more meaty taste than other white fish. Chicken Parm is a staple at Italian restaurants, and there’s a reason for that—those crispy cutlets smothered in red sauce and bu alo mozzarella keep the taste buds excited long after you’re done. Steak lovers can choose between a 16-ounce New York strip or a 20-ounce ribeye. Stu ed mushrooms with cheese and marsala are sure to make a nice accompaniment.
And desserts span Italian classics as well, with panna cotta, gelato and tiramisu making good choices. If you prefer to drink your dessert, Balla Italian Soul has a carajillo with Licor 43 and espresso, plus amaros, limoncellos and grappa.
Take advantage of the family-style, threecourse tasting menu, where for $75 per person you’ll enjoy some of Balla’s best dishes, including heirloom tomatoes with stracciatella, rigatoni or casarecce, sea bream and Mary’s half chicken. Add a wine pairing for $45 per person. Some restrictions apply.

Check out our exclusive interview and photo shoot with Zedd, who performs this summer at Tao Beach Dayclub at The Venetian
Under the sun, among lush greenery and towering palms trees sits Tao Beach Dayclub at The Venetian, an Asian-inspired paradise spread across 47,000 square feet. And in the middle of the tropical oasis, rocking the crowd from a DJ booth, is worldrenowned musical star Zedd. The multiplatinum Grammy winner is signed to the dayclub roster for
the first time this season, so Las Vegas Magazine snagged the chance for an exclusive interview and a fun photo shoot promoting his new gig. Don’t miss his performances the rest of the summer, including this Friday, Aug. 24 and Sept. 14. (He also plays at the dayclub’s sister venue, Omnia nightclub at Caesars Palace, throughout the summer and fall).

This summer is big for Zedd. Not only did he play Tao Beach Dayclub for the first time, but come Aug. 30 he releases his new album, Telos. It’s a highly anticipated album, his first in nine years. A basic definition of the word “telos” is “fulfillment,” “accomplishment” or “goal,” but it can also mean completion or an ending. The definition says it all, Zedd said. “For the album name I wanted something short. One word. Something interesting enough that you’d want to Google what it means. And the definition of the word is something that I can really deeply connect to. (It’s) one of fulfillment and accomplishment, and this is how I really feel about my album, Telos. It’s on a level of complexity that I didn’t think that I could reach, and I’m very proud of it. But also, while I was making the album at some point, I genuinely burned out working on it for many years ... I thought it might be the last piece of music that I would ever make. So the end is part of the definition; there was a good chunk of time when I thought this is going to be my last release ever.”
After he made his 2015 album, True Colors, he admitted he was a little burned out on making music because of how much he put into it. He needed some time away from the studio and some mental freedom.
“I genuinely didn’t have anything to say,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do that would justify me making a full-length record. I just think it took me nine years to feel like it’s the first time again. Your first album is like exploring a world you’ve never seen before, and then you’ve explored the world and then you’re trying to find corners of that world that you haven’t explored yet, and after the second album you’re wondering if there are
RTA jacket ($995) and jeans ($285) available at RTA and rta.com, RON DORFF shirt ($60) available at RON DORFF and rondorff.com, STEVE MADDEN sneakers ($129.95) available at STEVE MADDEN and stevemadden.com
any more unexplored areas in this world that you’ve explored. And for me it took nine years to forget about all that and feel like I am now painting a brand-new picture.” And Telos is a complete picture of Zedd, so to speak. He had a hand in every aspect, playing some instruments and spending more time with artists he collaborated with. For the first time he felt more comfortable expressing himself.
“It’s the most I’ve been involved in absolutely every element of an album,” he said. “Musically it’s very me, and I didn’t make any compromises. … It was everything I wanted to do. Everything my soul really craved. The commercial success of the album was never really a thought when I was
He started classical piano at age 3, and by his early teens he was playing the drums in a rock-metal band with his brother. But it was in that studio that Zedd picked up a CD from Justice, an electronic music duo from France.
“And I listened to this Justice album, and it was everything I have loved about Daft Punk’s Discovery, which is the first electronic album I ever listened to, but this was on a different level of production,” he said. “I had no idea how to make electronic bass and sounds; I just knew how to write music and record music and produce music, but I never tried electronic music. That album really made me want to learn how to make that kind of stuff.”
making this album. This is an album that is a concept album from front to back. It’s meant to be listened to in one piece. Most songs are connected except for somewhere I wanted there to be a break. It’s really a journey that I wanted to take people on. I wanted people to feel the way that I used to feel when I listened to music as a kid, (how it) just deeply inspired and changed me and educated me. I would love for the younger generation to get that same feeling that I used to get back in the day.”
Back in the day, around 15 years old, Zedd took a job as a studio drummer at a studio in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he grew up playing music.
So, for fun, he produced his first album of electronic music and shared it with his friends, who encouraged him to continue down the path. “I just made electronic music that felt good to me,” he said. “I made my songs and made an album. I never released it, I just did it to get good at electronic music. And that was my electronic upbringing, and then from there I made Clarity.” Zedd’s 2012 debut studio album, certified platinum, set him on the path to becoming a worldwide electronic music DJ phenomenon. The accolades are plenty, including a Grammy Award, 12 platinum singles, a VMA for Best Dance Video, 13 songs on Billboard ’s Hot 100, the cover of Forbes and headlining gigs at festivals like EDC, Coachella and Lollapalooza. And here in Las Vegas, Sept. 2 (his
to remind myself of that every time I feel some sort of sadness that—I’m living the dream.”
While putting Telos together, Zedd really thought it might be his last hurrah, but now that he’s completed the album and had a little time to breathe, “I might be ready to write some new music,” he said. And not only does he seem inspired once again, but he also seems more sure-footed than ever.
mental choice: ‘I’m going to create an album for me and me only.’ And I’m lucky to be on a label that has given me complete freedom. They were the last ones to hear it. There were no restrictions. It was a passion project.”
birthday) has o cially been declared “Zedd Day.”
“I would have never believed that I get to live the life that I get to live,” Zedd said. “I always knew my life would revolve somewhere around music. Whether I was going to be a studio musician, or my band was going to be successful. I didn’t know what it was going to be, but I knew my life was going to be in music. The last thing I would have ever had on my bingo card was I would become a DJ and move to America and get to play shows in front of thousands and thousands of people. I never thought that would be the case and I’m truly, truly lucky, and I have
“This is the most confident that I’ve ever been in the music I created,” he said. “I think you can never control how people will receive your music. What you can control is you do everything you can to make sure it’s you that really loves it. It’s really hard to do sometimes. Everyone says they don’t care about it, but truthfully once you have success it’s so hard to completely forget about it. It’s kinda like success is a one-way street; you can’t forget about what success does to you, and it maybe just took enough time and a pandemic of being uninspired and all those experiences that I’ve collected for me to make the
Along with the upcoming release of Telos, Zedd was also signed for the fi rst time to a residency at Tao Beach Dayclub. “I used to not enjoy day shows at all because I was lacking all the production,” he said. “I felt naked without all the lights, and I’ve really grown to like day shows—specifically this year. I’m not sure if it’s because the crowds have gotten better, but it’s literally my favorite dayclub that I’ve ever gotten to play. There’s something equally intimate and grand at the same time. I felt very connected with the crowd. I could hear them. I didn’t feel like I was on a pedestal far away. And everyone seemed so happy and smiling the entire time. It really made me feel happy. I felt like there was just such love in the place, and it’s a beautiful dayclub. I really, really enjoyed playing there.”
It seems that this year, for Zedd, the tide has changed. He’s found musical inspiration again and he’s totally vibing when it comes to live performances. So what was once possibly the end is now just the beginning, and his future looks brighter than ever.

Retiring chef Julian Serrano is ready for his next step
Earlier this summer, Julian Serrano fans got two pieces of momentous news: The chef would be retiring; and his revered restaurant at Bellagio, Picasso, would close. In early August, shortly before closing its doors for good, Picasso, which has won many prestigious awards over the years, hosted a special dinner honoring the chef for his work in the restaurant industry. Spanish-born Serrano, who’s dialing back work commitments to begin preparing for retirement, will still be working at Julian Serrano Tapas at Aria (at least for now). He spoke to Las Vegas Magazine about his career, favorite memories and much more.
I don’t know yet! It’s going to be a totally new life. I think I’ll listen to my body and my brain, and then see what I want to do. After 55 years of working, I think it’s very important to wait, not make any plans in advance, and to see how it goes. I know I want to travel a little bit, spend more time with the family, and relax.
There have been many and it’s very difficult to pick one, but would have to say (it’s) the first day we opened the restaurant. It came after months of very hard work and, at the time, I was still new to Las Vegas. But to open the restaurant that first day, and to see its success and how much people enjoyed it, that is one of the things I’ll remember forever.
I’m going to pick two! The first is the Michelin Two Stars. That one was very important to me and I’m very proud of it. The second is when I won the James Beard Award for Best Chef Southwest in 2002.
I have three dishes that have been on the menu for 25 years that would be impossible to take off the menu. Whenever we’d try, people would always come back in asking for it. They are the warm quail salad with sautéed artichokes and pine nuts; the pan-seared U-10 day boat scallop with potato mousseline and jus de veau; and the poached oysters with osetra caviar and vermouth sauce.
I have to tell you, the answer is Las Vegas. For me, that will always be the place. Las Vegas is a great city for business, and it’s one of the best cities in the world for a restaurant. If I were ever to open another restaurant, Las Vegas would be the place.

There are a variety of ways to pregame “O” by Cirque du Soleil. A trifecta of dining options with views of the Fountains of Bellagio are directly across the casino floor from “O” Theatre with Le Cirque, Yellowtail and Lago by Julian Serrano opening their doors two hours before the first showtime. The buffet is to the left of the entrance and box office, while to the right the smoke-free poker room offers tableside dining from Noodles, and
adjoining Bet MGM Sports Book has a full bar.
A more advanced plan can now include seeing 2022 documentary Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net, which has recently begun streaming on Amazon Prime. Director Dawn Porter, who has since gone on to direct documentaries on singer Luther Vandross and the WNBA, depicts the return of the cast and crew of “O” to Bellagio after a long, life-changing layoff during the
pandemic. Not everyone would make it back.
“O” remains a groundbreaking show in a stable of productions that by the time Without a Net was completed had been seen by 215 million people in 70 countries. It’s a story involving vision, talent, training, precision, enthusiasm and inevitable change. In this case it also involves a whole lot of water.
Porter starts out showing a montage of behind-the-curtain action as performers prepare, costumers costume and crew members go into action. We get a bird’s-eye view of the circular pool, the very symbol of “O,” which in turn is named for the phonetic pronunciation of the French word for water, “eau.” Then it’s showtime.
A flashback takes us to March 2020, where we meet cast members we’ll follow to the reopening. We start out at Cirque du Soleil headquarters in Montreal, though, where CEO and president Daniel Lamarre laments the closing of some 44 shows around the world.
“It has been very, very difficult because letting people go, letting friends go, that was horrible,” says Lamarre. “For a moment I thought maybe this is the end.”
Cirque’s business is human performance, chief talent officer Marie-Noëlle Gagnon explains. Cast members are rare talents not easily replaced, and the ones who intended to keep performing kept training.
She zooms in on several members: Trapeze artist Emma Garrovillo put a freestanding Lollipop Lyra hoop pole in her living room; acrobat Danut Coseru reallocated performance times to parent time; and synchronized-swimming trailblazer Bill May taught on Zoom.
Still, that all-consuming, artistically satisfying purpose “O” provided would have to be on pause for what seemed like an eternity. Some cast members would gain new partners upon return and some would move on to the next stage of their careers shortly after the pool was filled again. Creator Franco Dragone, who passed away in 2022, makes an appearance in the film.
It’s the scenes of underwater stage production, high-flying artistry and show centerpiece Le Bateau that really whet the appetite for “O,” though. It’s a cuisine of creative expression that must be seen live, and is optimally enjoyable when preceded by fine dining.
