6th Annual Highway 80 South Art Hop
The Sixth Annual Highway 80 South Art Hop is October 13 and 14, 2018. The Art Hop takes you through the South Toe River Valley, from Micaville to Celo, part of the designated Mt. Mitchell Scenic Byway and home to many nationally known artists. Visitors will discover galleries and artists welcoming them into their studios and shops each day from 10:00 am. to 5:00 pm. Media include paintings, clay, glass, prints, wood, jewelry, sculptural steel, and mixedmedia.

A special feature of the Art Hop this year will be a kick-off concert on October 11, part of the weekly Thursday night Micaville Music series at OOAK Art Gallery. Broke Holler, (the husband-wife duo of Pete & Kim McWhirter) will perform old-time and original songs from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
The Micaville Music Saturday Morning Jam takes place in the OOAK Loft starting at 10:00 am. All are invited to bring an instrument and play along, or just come to listen.

HART Theatre Makes Waynesville an Entertainment Destination
One of the treats in visiting the beautiful mountain town of Waynesville is the oppor-tunity to spend an evening experiencing great theater. The HART Theatre is one of the most active in Western North Carolina, programming year round on three stages and operating a Bistro which many consider one of the best restaurants in town. The HART campus sits on an eight-acre historic site just blocks from Downtown. The site is also home to the Shel-ton House Museum of N.C. Handicrafts. The facilities are breathtaking and the productions award winning. Patrons can dine before the show, then stroll to their seat to enjoy intimate drama or major musicals with live orchestras. The Bistro also offers a full bar with craft beers on tap and an extensive wine list. This fall HART This fall HART is offering up the comedy “Over the River and Through the Woods,” running September 28 –October 14 in the new Fangmeyer Theatre. This new flexible performance space allows each show to be staged differently. “Over the River” is being performed in the round. The next production, Maxwell Anderson’s “The Bad Seed,” is the Halloween offering, running October 19 – November 4. or the holidays, the theater’s youth drama program, Kids at HART, is presenting the musical “ELF Jr.” matinees November 10, 11, 17 and 18 and in December the theater presents an elaborate production of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”
If you think things slow down for the winter, you’re wrong. HART has a unique program for the dark days of winter. Area actors and directors are invited to submit the plays they would love to do. Once an actor or director has assembled a cast and crew, HART provides a space on the calendar in its intimate Feichter Studio Theater. This sixty seat space presents six plays in twelve weeks beginning in midJanuary. HART has won State, Regional and National awards for its pro-ductions, many of which originated in the Studio season. The winter also features other productions from Kids at HART. Next spring look for “Godspell Jr.” All of that takes you to April, and the beginning of HART’s 2019 Main Stage Season. The theater is active virtually year round, making it a major attraction for those visiting the North Carolina Mountains. While many know Yancey County, North Carolina, is home to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River — Mount Mitchell — few realize that the county actually contains six of the 10 tallest peaks on the East Coast. These summits are part of the Black Mountain range, which formed here more than a billion years ago. The 15-mile ridgeline is more subdued today, marked by rounded peaks, resulting from years of erosion. The Toe River winds its way through the Black Mountains, creating the peaceful beauty of the Toe River Valley. With the abundance of natural resources, Yancey County has become a destination for outdoor adventure, whether hiking, biking, fly-fishing or paddling.
The area is home to some of the most rugged trails in the region, such as the Black Mountain Crest Trail, which starts at Bowlens Creek just south of downtown Burnsville and travels 11.3 miles to the summit of Mount Mitchell. It rambles through hardwoods and pines and climbs 3,634 feet in elevation, scaling 10 peaks that reach more than 6,000 feet tall.
The North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association is a passionate group of outdoor enthusiasts who help with the upkeep of Mount Mitchell State Park, as well as maintenance on other trails throughout the area, and often lead guided hikes and other activities.
The group developed the Black Mountains Hiking Challenge to recognize those hikers who complete all 23 trails of the Black Mountain range. The group’s website, www.NCHighPeaks.org, provides trail descriptions and interactive maps.
For novice hikers looking for a more approachable route, a couple of easy trails are located within Mount Mitchell State Park. The two-mile commissary trail follows the old logging railroad bed that was used in
the early 1900s. The summit trail leads from the upper summit parking lot to the observation platform atop Mount Mitchell, via a quarter-mile paved walking trail. While the trail is steep, the view from the top is well worth the ascent. On clear days, visitors can see as far as 85 miles, taking in a panoramic vista of the peaks and valleys below.

Many streams are located within the Pisgah National Forest and provide nearby camping for those interested in spending their nights outdoors as well. Mountain Makins Festival

The Mountain Makins Festival, presented by ORNL Federal Credit Union, will be celebrated at Rose Center Saturday, October 27 from 10 – 5 and Sunday, October 28 from 11 – 5. The festival, a delightful combination of crafts, food, music, dancing and fun, received the Kaleidoscope “2016 Best Festival in the Southeast Award” from the Southeast Festivals and Events Association.
The celebration begins with a Preview Party on Friday, October 26, from 6:30 – 9pm. Advance-only tickets for this special evening are $25, or $30 after October 15. Guests will enjoy a gourmet buffet and will have first chance to purchase the fine crafts. Tickets for the Preview Party include admission Saturday and Sunday as well.
Some 60 artisans will exhibit throughout the historic building and the surrounding grounds, which are decorated for the season. Visitors can see skilled craftsmen at work making baskets and brooms, turning wood, blacksmithing and more.

The Country Store will have a tent full of baked goods along with homemade Soupbeans n Cornbread, Seafood Chowder, baked potatoes, barbeque and other specialties. Other food vendors will have kettle corn, “Jacked Up” bagels, Polish sausage, pizza, spiral potatoes and much more. Children’s activities include painting pumpkins, and other craft activities, face painting, games and pony rides.
Children under 6 are admitted free, and those ages 6-12 for only $1. Adult admission Saturday or Sunday is $7.

When I first saw the structure known locally as “Doc Rogers Rock House” I knew in my heart it would somehow be mine. My mother often said of me, “You always attempt the impossible”.
She also referenced my stubbornness quality. Both traits (which I proudly claim) assisted in my purchasing the iconic craftsman bungalow, which became my retirement project – an antique shop.
For the past 8 years I have filled the shop with real wood furniture, lots of mission oak, and other furnishings of the Arts & Crafts style. You will see various types of metalwork, pottery,- Fulper and Van Briggle to Roseville and McCoy – vases, pots and crocks.
Artwork abounds – paintings and prints as well as a Wallace Nitting collection including furniture. Others have called my floral designs – art, although I have never thought of myself as an artist. I desire pleasure and satisfaction in creating wreaths, swags, arrangements and herbal weavings with material from the gardens that surround the shop. My works is 100%

This heavily wooded area contains steep slopes with interesting rock outcrops and is rich in plant and bird life.
Sharp’s Ridge is situated on a steep limestone ridge that offers a great view of the city skyline and the distant Great Smoky Mountain peaks. Sharp’s Ridge Memorial Park makes up 111-acres of the 7-mile ridge featuring 4.7 miles of multi-use trails that wind across the
wooded hills. About three-quarters of the way to the top of the ridge, you’ll find an overlook platform with beautiful vistas.
I.C. King Park spans 219-acres with 8-miles of singletrack trails skirting the shoreline of Knob Creek, an inlet of the Tennessee River, and winding through heavily forested woods. The shoreline and trails are perfect for mountain bikers looking for a challenge - climb to the ridge and experience steep descents.
Seven Islands Birding Park is a rich 425-acre peninsula bordered by the French Broad River featuring 8-miles of easy mowed trails that weave through a diverse ecosystem. Along the route, the trails criss-cross the 1.2 mile paved greenway that bisects the park as it winds to the water’s edge. The scenic landscape ranges from upland hardwoods to riverbottom fields sown in native warm-season grasses.
