Jimmy Martin was born in Sneedville, Tennessee in 1927. A local boy that eventually was crowned the King of Blue Grass. Jimmy lost his father to pneumonia at the age of four, leaving his family destitute. Jimmy left school in the third grade to work in the tobacco fields. But Jimmy was a creative kid, making his first guitar out of a Prince Albert cigar can because Prince Albert was a sponsor of the Grand Ole Opry. While Jimmy’s family was too poor to own a radio, Jimmy didn’t miss the Grand Ole Opry; he would go into town on Saturday nights and ask someone sitting in their car if they would turn on the radio on so he could listen to Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe on the Grand Ole Opry
After getting fired from a job in Morristown, TN, for singing on the job, Jimmy boarded a bus and headed for Nashville. Landing at the Grand Ole Opry, Jimmy talked his way backstage to meet his idol, bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe. Monroe admired young Jimmy’s bravery and agreed to audition him on the spot. Together, they sang Old Cross Roads. A week later, Jimmy was in Fort Smith, Arkansas, singing on stage with Bill Monroe.
Jimmy spent five years as Monroe’s lead singer and rhythm guitar player. They recorded classics as The Little Girl, Sitting Alone, I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome, and countless others.
After a short time with Jim Martin and the Osborne Brothers, Jimmy started his band, Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys. Together
the group recorded 130 sides for Decca Records with hits like Don’t Cry for Me, Future on Ice, Freeborn Man, and more. After 18 years with Decca, Jimmy started his own record label Sunny Mountain Music where he recorded six full albums.
In 1972 Jimmy joined a parade of stars that included Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs, Mother Maybell Carter, and more to record a threerecord album, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” which became a gold record. Jimmy has numerous hits on the country charts and won multiple songwriter and vocalist awards and a member of the International Blue Grass Hall of Fame.
James Henry “Jimmy” Martin died on May 14, 2005, in Nashville, TN, he was 78 years old.

hat happens when tragedy knocks on your front door? For Ryan Manion, Amy Looney Heffernan, and Heather Kelly, it was a literal knock, with men standing in crisply pressed uniforms. They had news. News that gutted them to the core -- the death of their loved ones, a brother and two husbands -- in combat zones.
This is their story. The story of three women, bonded by grief and purpose. Grief because they lost their best friends in war. Purpose because they resolved -- together -- to do something about it. To turn loss into inspiration for others and to channel the love that they had for the men in their lives into love for others through service and the establishment of the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF.)

Ryan Manion is the surviving sister of Marine 1stLt. Travis Manion, who was killed in Iraq on April 29, 2007. His death served as the inspiration for establishing Travis Manion Foundation, a nationally recognized veteran service organization. Today Ryan leads the foundation as President.
Amy Looney Heffernan is the surviving spouse of LT Brendan Looney, a West Coast-based Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan on September 21, 2010. Amy serves as the Vice-President of TMF.
Heather Kelly is the surviving spouse of Marine 1stLt. Robert Kelly, who was killed in Afghanistan on November 9, 2010. As West Region Program Mgr. for TMF, Heather works closely with veterans returning to civilian life, the surviving family members of those who make the ultimate sacrifice, and fostering America's next generation of leaders.

“Regardless of the facts and known negative short- and Long term impact on society, the U. S. marijuana lobby continues to push for legalization of its use.
Pro-marijuana advocates want it treated on an equal level with alcohol and tobacco – despite the known fact that the longterm use and abuse of marijuana has a long term negative impact – mentally, physically and economically – on the overall welfare of society.
Fact – for decades people have known that marijuana lead to use of more powerful mind altering drugs.
Fact – for decades it has been known that habitual use of marijuana is a cause of violence, mental health decline and illness such as schizophrenia.
Fact – marijuana sale and use is against the law in several countries and federal law in the United States.
Chief McCuistion will be documenting the most current research in his presentation. For example New York Times writer Alex Berenson recently authored TELL YOUR CHILDREN, Tell Your Children the Truth About Marijuana, Mental Illness and Violence. At the Military Order of World Wars 2018 National Convention, I presented a National Security Report on drug impact on National Security. At that time I was MOWW’s National Security Chair. Four star General Barry R. McCaffery read the report. He had served as Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). He was also an Adjunct Professor of International Security Studies. 2006-2010. At the time of his retirement he was the most highly decorated General, having been awarded 3 Purple Hearts, 2 Distinguished Service Crosses and 2 Silver Stars. Ref:

Coming off of an incredible GRAMMY win for 2015’s SHINE FOR ALL THE PEOPLE (Best Roots Gospel album), Nashville rocker Mike Farris keeps it earthy and personal on SILVER & STONE, out September 7 on Compass Records. SILVER & STONE isn’t a “gospel” album by any means, but Farris still takes us to church on these 12 engaging tracks, including a cover of Bill Withers’ “Hope She’ll be Happier.”
Sonically, SILVER & STONE’s warm organic sound and stellar playing recalls the cream of the Stax Records’ catalog. The album opener and Farris original, “Tennessee Girl,” segueing into “Are You Lonely For Me Baby?” and “Can I Get a Witness,” are loose and groove-driven, hitting all the right notes of soul, and blues with an effortlessness that shows what a natural Farris is for this sound.
“When Mavis Sings,” hits equally close to his heart. He’s had the privilege becoming close to legendary singer and gospel icon Mavis Staples. He says, “Mavis is everything you want your heroes to be.” Julie Farris elaborates, “She calls him ‘Mikey’.” The song is actually a history lesson on Mavis’ life, as it’s completely comprised of literal tidbits of her life.
The album closes with “I’ll Come Running Back To You,” an acknowledgment of the surrender intrinsic in love by accepting the kind of love that conquers shame and selfdoubt. Where the narrator of this song is losing his identity in service of unrequited love, for Farris, it’s quite the opposite—it’s relinquishing a vision of identity that needs to be served by attention or self-medication and instead takes root and grows through love.

One of a Kind Art Gallery, celebrating its eighth year of operation, continues to grow with the works of over 170 local artists and craftspeople in the nostalgic Old Micaville Country Store. Gallery owner Kari Weaver invites you to come on in and enjoy the fine, folk, and funky local art. It’s one thing to see pieces of art in a gallery. They’re beautiful and appealing. But to see the pieces in the place where they were created, to meet the artist and talk with him or her about the process, to get a glimpse of what it takes to make a living making art — that’s an entirely different experience.
The artists of the Toe River Valley invite you into their spaces for the Toe River Arts Studio Tour, Dec. 6-8. Explore the scenic byways and quaint towns throughout Yancey and Mitchell counties as you continue on your treasure hunt to artists’ studios.
Just outside of downtown Burnsville, you’ll find Yummy Mud Puddle, the dual studios of husband-and-wife artists John Richards and Claudia Dunaway. Richards uses drink can tabs, corks, bottle caps, computer parts and a whole host of other discarded materials to fashion whimsical critters of all shapes and sizes. Next door, Dunaway, who once worked in ceramics, practices a variety of printmaking techniques. Her airy studio welcomes mountain breezes and natural light as she carves wooden blocks to create her next prints. Visitors can share a piece of this mountaintop oasis with a stay in the Yummy Vacation Home, a petfriendly three-bedroom retreat with a sweeping view.
J.R. and Kristen Page are another husband-and-wife artist team in Burnsville. Both of them touch every piece of pottery that leaves their studio. Their functional bowls, drinking cups, mugs and dinnerware sets are some of their best sellers. Stepping into their shared studio, meeting their dog and donkeys, and seeing their eyes light up when they talk about their work turns a simple purchase into a personal story.
Across the county in the Celo community, Kenny Pieper creates intricate vases, goblets, bowls, pendants and more in his riverside glass studio. A former student and teacher at nearby Penland School of Craft, Pieper is an expert in tedious Italian glass traditions. His towering glassworks with delicate crisscross patterns are a marvel.
These artists are just a sampling of more than 100 who will open their doors for the Studio Tour. The tour is free and self-guided. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Visitors can map their routes based upon type of media, geographic region or whatever suits their fancy.

What is a Pappy’s Gunsmithin’ and Backwoods Livin’? We do gunsmithing, and gun sales.
But Pappy has gone one step further and now repairs and sells air guns. If you think air rifles are just kids’ stuff - think again. He just got one in that shoots a .22 caliber pellet at 900fps. That’s as fast as a subsonic .22. We also have targets. Targets are fun, but exploding targets are just plain cool! (New Years Eve is coming.)
But what about this backwoods livin’? This is all kind of things from books on homesteading, selfdefense, and all kinds of the old school ways to
equipment for hiking, camping, and outdoor fun. He also carries aromatherapy oils and diffusers, trail and food storage freeze dried foods and snacks. We even pizza ovens that sit on top of a large 2 burner stove. He’ll also sell you the 2-burner stove. Seriously, the only way to truly understand all he carries is to come in and browse around.
So how did Pappy end up here instead of retiring like any sane man would do? Well, Pappy was a soldier for 22 years serving as an Infantryman, then as a Special Forces (Green Beret)medic. After retirement he went to Kuwait and then Iraq for 3 years. He was
injured and decided to come home and become a gunsmith. He took the Master Gunsmithing Course at American Gunsmithing Institute. Here he learned how all the parts work together which gave him the ability to diagnose and repair, rather than just replace parts and hope. With all this in place it was time to open Pappy’s Gunsmithin’ and Backwoods Livin’. He started in February 2015 working out of his garage. From there he moved to his shop at 56 Stardust and things started doing better. This year we moved into town at 613 West US Hwy 19E just across the street from TD Bank.
In celebration of its 22nd birthday, WDVX is throwing a concert at the Bijou Theater on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, and everyone is invited. Artists including EmiSunshine and The Rain, Shawn Camp Band, Alex Leach Band, Steve Gulley and Jay Clark are slated to perform. This mix of top-notch artists represents a range of Americana and roots music WDVX is known for celebrating, many with deep ties to the station and the East Tennessee region.

With preparations for Christmas coming around the corner, LampLight Theatre ushers in two Kingsport classics for the holiday season. This year’s productions, The Toymaker’s Wish and The Christmas Heirloom , bring heartwarming messages of family, home and love. Through song and storytelling, the audience will be swept away into the lives of the shows’ characters and leave with hearts full of Christmas
Bays Mountain Park is a beautiful 3,600 acre, city-owned nature preserve in Northeast Tennessee. Its mission is to educate and inspire people of all ages about nature and science. It has a variety of animals in natural habitats, miles of trails, a large lake, and a planetarium theater and observatories.
The planetarium theater houses a 40’ diameter domed projection screen held above 102 seats. Boasting one of the finest hybrid projection systems, it includes a mechanical star projector that accurately depicts the night sky from any where in the world at any time. The theater also includes a digital projector system that can display any immersive visual, whether on Earth or in space, that surrounds the viewer. Highlighting astronomy-themed programs, nine different shows are provided each year.
The observatories house a variety of telescopes to provide up-close views of celestial objects. The night viewing programs are called StarWatch and are held the Saturday nights of March, April, October and November. They start at dusk and are free. If the weather is poor, the program will be held inside the planetarium theater with a live tour of the night sky. We also provide safe solar viewing called SunWatch. Held March through October, 3-3:30p, this free program allows viewers to see the surface of the Sun safely.

Mitchell, at 6,684 feet above sea level, can be seen from the I-26 West NC Welcome Center most days. Folks who come into the Center wonder if they are viewing it and ask us to confirm. They are amazed at what they find out! The peak that looks the highest from this standpoint is actually Big Butt Mountain in the Craggy Mountain range at 5,723 feet. Two “hills” to the left is the highest peak East of the Mississippi, Mount Mitchell, which is in the Black Mountain range behind the Craggies and looks like a little bump. During the winter months we will see Mount Mitchell white with snow and the Craggy Mountains wintery brown, or all mountains above 4,000 feet with hoarfrost on its tips. The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra continues the celebration of its 75th anniversary season with “Miniature Masterpieces,” Sunday, November 10, 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The concert features music by three of Western music’s most iconic composers, Felix Mendelssohn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Franz Josef Haydn. In recognition of Veterans Day, admission is free to Veterans and Active Duty Military with appropriate ID at the door.
