Exploring the Classic/ Historical Car Hobby

Car enthusiasts appeared as soon as the automobile was introduced to the general public in the 18th and 19th centuries. Through the years, certain vehicles have proven more desirable to customers than others based on their looks and other attributes.

Auto hobbyists devote substantial time and effort to purchasing, restoring and displaying classic cars. While the hobby of restoring classic cars is not necessarily for everyone, its popularity suggests it’s an activity that’s here to stay.

According to an article in The Economist, in the wake of the recent recession, investors were increasingly pulling their money out of stocks and converting assets into tangible items, such as classic cars. As late as 2013, collector cars were outperforming other tangible investments like art, wine, stamps, and coins by large margins.

Those ready to dip their toes in the classic car waters should understand a few key factors that can affect how much they enjoy this potentially rewarding hobby.

Environmental regulations. Some collectors face challenges when attempting to restore classic vehicles because the cars do not meet today’s stringent

clean air initiatives that govern automobiles. With the increasing number of new, clean cars on the road, vehicles that fail to meet modern emissions standards may pose a costly problem to classic car collectors.

Introduction of alternative fuels. As governments increasingly emphasize the importance of clean fuel options, classic car owners may find it challenging to find more traditional fuels or face the added expense of adapting their vehicles to run on alternative fuels.

Lack of mechanical expertise. Workers in the automotive trade are trained to manufacture and repair new vehicles. As a result,

classic car owners without much mechanical ability of their own may find it difficult to find mechanics with the skills necessary to repair and restore classic cars.

Historic requirements should be heeded. Each state has its own requirements governing classic cars. To qualify for historic vehicle registration, vehicles may need to be 25 years or older, owned solely as a collector’s item and used exclusively for exhibition and educational purposes. When driven for personal use, such vehicles may not be allowed to exceed 1,000 miles per year.

Classic cars continue to attract hobbyists from all over the globe. Restoring classic cars can be a rewarding pastime, but one that involves dedication and an investment of both time and money.

How did a guy from Ohio come to put his roots in East Tennessee and become a Youtube success and champion for Knoxville? After his time in the service, he met a gal from Alabama and married her. When they were deciding where to make their life, they pulled out a map and Knoxville was pretty much in between his family in Ohio and hers in Alabama. That decision led to his Devine Intervention moment after living in East Tennessee for over 18 years. Scottie’s close friend kept “beating him up” about doing dual purpose videos and stills of Hot Rods. Contrary to what you’re thinking- no Scottie did not have a videographer background, he had been in the mortgage business for over 25 years! Hot Rods and food were just his passion. And on that fateful Saturday his friend was calling to hound him yet again, to which Scottie almost didn’t take the call. But luckily for us he did! His friend told him about Youtube and how they were paying for videos, etc., so now was the time to strike. The next morning, Scottie sat straight up in bed with his ah-ha moment- Scottie

D TV- Cooking & Hot Rods! And so his passion for food and cars put him on his path. But it was not an easy one. No start up income, no formal background training; just a 40+yr old guy & an eye for cars began his new adventure. It was a struggle to say the least He lived on someone’s farm, tethering to their slow Internet or going to Hardee’s to hook up to theirs to upload videos. After about 2 years, he realized people were more interested in Hot Rods than the cooking, so his focus switched to just amazing cars, and those who build and own them.

“I have been Blessed to do what I love and get to make a difference in people’s lives” Scottie admits. But how does videoing a Hot Rod help someone? ScottieD says “You have no idea how many people have been brought to tears or told me that it meant so much to them to have me shoot their car or their work. Many have said “No one paid attention to my car before and now look at all the likes and comments it’s gotten.” It’s validation for all the hard work, time and money spent on their own passion. There have been a few that hold a place in my heart such as Tribute builds I’ve been honored to video. And

even one that involves a good friend of mine here in Knoxville, Steve at Pro Auto. A soldier in Afghanistan had called asking him to work on the interior of his truck, and of course Steve said sure and that was that. Well, apparently he’s a big fan of ScottieDTV.com and had seen builds from Steve on my channel. His fellow soldiers in Afghanistan had also and didn’t believe Steve would actually be doing work on his truck, that Steve would only work on highend builds. They must have been giving him down the road pretty hard because the next thing we knew, Steve had called me saying the soldier had flown in just to have his picture taken with us and get our autographs! That’s one of those moments that just hit you!

ScottieDTV now has over 1800 videos, 120,000 subscribers, over 1.5 million views a month and is watched in over 250 countries worldwide! Because of his “passion”, he has found success fdoing what he loves. It’s never work when you love what you’re doing!

ScottieDTV is a YouTube channel that was started 5/17/2010...The goal of this channel is to show you the coolest cars on the web!!!! Scottie D has a knack of finding just the right cars on his travels around the USA.

Raised in Idaho, Stacey David earned his reputation as the local hot-rodder by driving his 1930 5-window coupe to school every day. “It was a real hot rod . . . fast and dangerous! It’s a wonder I’m still alive!” His intrigue for all things with a motor started way before that. Stacey helped restore his first car when he was 12 years old-it was his sister’s 1963 VW bug. But even before that he was building blindingly fast go-karts with 440 snowmobile engines! However, it was Stacey’s Dad’s old flat fender Willys Jeep that ignited his passion for 4-wheel drive and off-roading that continues to this day.

In college at Boise State University, when Stacey was supposed to be studying Biology, he was instead learning performance driving at the local tracks and taking in all the information he could about the “Greats like Richard Petty, Don Garlits, and Carroll Shelby. “I like it all! If it will run, I want to drive it.” Stacey also became a student of the unique building techniques of George Barris, John Buttera and Darryl Starbird - to name a few. “I’ve always wanted something unique (to drive) that no one else had, and I found that the only way to get that was to build it.” Stacey came to Nashville and

opened his own custom shop called “The Rattletrap” that specialized in everything from engine building to custom paint jobs, suspension work, metal fabrication, and everything in between. It was here that he continued to build a reputation designing and building, as well as restoring cars and trucks or whatever else could be dragged in!

In the late 1990s, Stacey had the opportunity to host a new show called TRUCKS! He jumped at the chance and hosted/produced the show for the next 8 years. Unlike most hosts of automotive programming, Stacey did all the designing and building himself. It quickly became obvious to the viewers that Stacey was more than a talking head-this guy knew what he was doing! His loyal fan base grew steadily over the years and made the show the most popular in Spike TV’s weekend line up. In fact, the show maintained the highest

viewership for automotive/ how-to programming since the show first aired in 1998 and quickly became one of Spike TV’s highest rated shows overall!

Stacey is a member of the Goodguys Rod and Custom Association, Kustoms of America, as well as numerous other clubs and organizations. He also contributes various tech and how-to articles and does personal appearances at large-venue events when time allows. And don’t tell Stacey we told you, but he’s really an awesome musician. True to Stacey’s passion, he played professionally for years as a way to raise money for his next automotive project – how’s that for turning convention on its head!

ROCK to pay tribute to not only our WWII Veterans, but to ALL the brave men and women that have ever donned a US Military uniform, and as you can see... there’s not another truck quite like it.
