ADVENTURE AHEAD

Pigeon Forge has an energy that just draws people in. Based at the foot of the Smokies, it is the heart of activity, adventure and more. Car show buffs flock to Pigeon Forge, TN to enjoy car shows, conventions, and rallies. The beautiful drive through our mountains allows you to take in the many wonders the Appalachia area has to offer. Those of us who love cars, vacation here for the car shows and the family friendly atmosphere with southern charm.

We know Pigeon Forge is a happening place and can be frustrating to navigate. Pigeon Forge Parkway practically turns into a parade of antique cars when the shows are in town. While this is great news to those who love cars, not so great if you’ve got to get somewhere fast. Which is why we’ve assembled these tips for navigating a Pigeon Forge car show:

1. Plan accordingly.

If you’re in town for a car show, savor each musclecar moment on the Parkway. Take time to talk to each owner or group; Pigeon Forge folks are always friendly and they love talking about their rides! If the car shows just aren’t your scene, it might be wise to avoid town those weekends. If your trip overlaps with a Pigeon Forge Rod Run and you’d rather skip it, take time out to explore the Smoky Mountains or visit in neighboring Gatlinburg for a day!

2. Ride the trolley.

The Fun Time Trolley is a public transportation system in Pigeon Forge, that offers an alternative to driving! The trolley travels between Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Gatlinburg, so it’s always on the go! There are stops along the Parkway and the trolleys are airconditioned and enclosed. Plus, it is inexpensive! Leave your car at your hotel and hop on the Pigeon Forge trolley.

3. Walk!

Take advantage of Pigeon Forge’s crisp Smoky Mountain air and walk! The Pigeon Forge Parkway, the main drag in town, is a straight, sixmile strip and is pedestrianfriendly. Get some exercise by seeing the local sights on foot.

4. Take a seat.

If you plan to spend the day visiting a car show, it’s a good idea to take folding chairs or at least blankets for setting up a spot and relaxing. It’s also great to pack a cooler with snacks or meals for the events that are held along the Parkway.

If you set up a spot, you can also stop in any of the Pigeon Forge restaurants that are nearby.

5. Beat the rush.

If you’re driving in to Pigeon Forge for the weekend, beat the weekend rush traffic by arriving before noon on Friday. Not only will you get first dibs and early check-in at your hotel, but you’ll arrive before most other travelers heading into town.

6. Just relax!

Even if you get trapped in traffic, don’t sweat it. Remember, you’re in Pigeon Forge to have fun! Don’t let the clock dictate your vacation. There will always be another show or another open table at the restaurant. Treasure each moment spent with your family in Pigeon Forge’s Smoky Mountain paradise without worrying.

Bonus Tip! Rent a bike. A great way to get around town is on a bicycle. Ride through the parking lots, sidewalks, down back streets and on the Pigeon Forge Greenway that runs along the Little Pigeon River.

GREASE STAINS

Getting the better of grease: how diy-ers and mechanics can combat grease and stains

Seasoned do-it-yourselfers and mechanics know that DIY projects and working on cars and trucks can sometimes be messy business. While work stations can often be cleaned in a matter of minutes, grease and other stains on clothing can linger for some time, even remaining in the washing machine long after wash cycles have ended.

Combating grease stains and their resulting odors has long been a problem for DIYers, auto mechanics and technicians. But there are ways to get the better of grease and even prevent future stains.

01

Act instantly.

Allowing grease stains to linger on clothing can make them harder to remove. Professional mechanics and weekend DIYers should check their work gear for stains when they finish working for the day, immediately treating any areas that have been blemished by grease or other stains. The quicker such stains are treated, the less likely they are to set and become permanent.

02

Treat stains with specialized detergents.

Ordinary laundry detergents may effectively combat everyday stains, but such products are often ineffective at treating the stains and grease that technicians’ work clothes are vulnerable to. Permatex¨, a leading innovator in chemical technology for automotive maintenance and repair and the maker of Fast Orange¨ hand cleaners, has developed Fast Orange Grease X Mechanic’s Laundry Detergent (www. fastorangelaundry.com). Designed to quickly and effectively remove grease, stains, tar, oil, automotive fluids, and odors from technicians’ work clothes, Fast Orange Grease X features a built-in pre-treater that is powerful enough to remove up to 99 percent of automotive stains and odors. Ideal for professional mechanics and automotive hobbyists alike, this specially formulated detergent also disintegrates grease and soil as it cleans, ensuring no residual grease remains in the washing machine after each load.

03

Maintain a clean work area.

Stains are a fact of life for mechanics, DIYers and hobbyists, but maintaining a clean, clutter-free work area can reduce the risk of accidents that lead to staining. Clean work areas at the end of each workday or DIY session, being sure to put all tools and gas cans away.

04

Take steps to prevent future stains.

New projects tend to excite DIYers, mechanics and automotive hobbyists. But before diving into a new project, professionals and novices alike can take steps to prevent the stains that can form as they learn on the job. Research how to approach a new project to reduce the likelihood of accidental spills. Washing work clothes with Fast Orange Grease X can even make work clothes less vulnerable to future stains.

“When formulating Fast Orange Grease X, we added a proprietary soil release/antistatic agent that repels future soil and stains,” said Permatex senior product manager Dan Clarke.

Stains and spills come with the territory of automotive and DIY work. But mechanics and DIY enthusiasts can employ several strategies to get the better of grease and other stains.

CAPTION: Formulated specifically to treat the grease, stains, tar, oil, and other fluids that can stain technicians’ work clothes, Fast Orange¨ Grease X Mechanic’s Laundry Detergent (inset) can combat existing stains and even prevent future stains.

Dropped Shock Mounts.

$149.00 | #3GC-RR-100 1963-66 Chevy Trucks and 196772 Chevy Trucks. If you are lowering your truck, or want it to ride better, moving the shock mount location can help. Our mounts move the shock outside the frame and behind the axle. The correct length shock to use is based on the amount of drop in the rear coil spring. We have two standard shock lengths for this kit. One for 0” to 4” dropped coils and one for 4” to 6” dropped coils. ** Not for coil-overs. No Limit Engineering 865-940-1503 www. nolimit.net

SharkSkin Hood

Insulation is a far superior material to what is currently being used. Specialty Automotive Materials has developed a solution with a new design. The Chevelle’s & Nova’s use the lip of the structural bracing to hold the hood insulation in place. Our design works on the same principle, since the Camaro’s hood is designed the same way. The black scrim face works great in any engine compartment. Hides the studs & nuts from the hood louvers on SS hoods. SharkSkin is 2.5 times denser by weight than the ‘ repop‘ type insulation. This is GREAT heat insulation and will help to absorb engine compartment noise. It will not slag or fray. Our hood insulation is shipped flat, not folded or crushed. CNC cut to insure a quality fit ever time.

Exploring the classic & historical car hobby

Car enthusiasts appeared as soon as the automobile was introduced to the general public in the 18th and 19th centuries. Through the years, certain vehicles have proven more desirable to customers than others based on their looks and other attributes.

Auto hobbyists devote substantial time and effort to purchasing, restoring and displaying classic cars. While the hobby of restoring classic cars is not necessarily for everyone, its popularity suggests it’s an activity that’s here to stay.

According to an article in The Economist, in the wake of the recent recession, investors were increasingly pulling their money out of stocks and converting assets into tangible items, such as classic cars. As late as 2013, collector cars were outperforming other tangible investments like art, wine, stamps, and coins by large margins.

Those ready to dip their toes in the classic car waters should understand a few key factors that can affect how much they enjoy this potentially rewarding hobby.

•Environmental regulations. Some collectors face challenges when attempting to restore classic vehicles because the cars do not meet today’s stringent clean air initiatives that govern automobiles. With the increasing number of new, clean cars on the road, vehicles that

fail to meet modern emissions standards may pose a costly problem to classic car collectors.

•Introduction of alternative fuels.

As governments increasingly emphasize the importance of clean fuel options, classic car owners may find it challenging to find more traditional fuels or face the added expense of adapting their vehicles to run on alternative fuels.

•Lack of mechanical expertise. Workers in the automotive trade are trained to manufacture and repair new vehicles. As a result, classic car owners without much mechanical ability of their own may find it difficult to find mechanics with the skills necessary to repair and restore classic cars.

•Historic requirements should be heeded.

Each state has its own requirements governing classic cars. To qualify for historic vehicle registration, vehicles may need to be 25 years or older, owned solely as a collector’s item and used exclusively for exhibition and educational purposes. When driven for personal use, such vehicles may not be allowed to exceed 1,000 miles per year.

Classic cars continue to attract hobbyists from all over the globe. Restoring classic cars can be a rewarding pastime, but one that involves dedication and an investment of both time and money.

Tennessee

MoonshineN WineTour

@ Tennessee XXX Moonshine and the Moonshine Candy Kitchen

This tour is a history lesson, a sightseeing tour, and a wine ‘n shine tasting tour wrapped up in one convenient package. It is our most popular tour in 2017.

Some folks want to try the once outlawed and taboo liquid known locally as white lighting or just moonshine to most. We will give you more than a taste of this one of a kind drink, we will give you its history here in the Tennessee mountains. Learn what part we played during the time of prohibition. Some of our most famous local moonshinin’ residents will be discussed. These fine brew masters have flavors ranging from the hard hitting traditional corn mash or rye to the amazing and sweet flavors like apple pie and strawberry shortcake. We cant visit every moonshine distillery on a single day but some of the major locations we may be visiting are: Ole Smoky, Smith Creek Moonshine, Sugarlands Moonshine, Tennessee XXX Moonshine, Old Forge Distillery at The Old Mill, Tennessee Legend, and Thunder Road Distilleries.

While some want to try shine others like the more relaxed and delicate taste of a quality wine. As most wine aficionados know the taste can change based on where the grapes are from. Here in the mountains of East Tennessee we have some very rich soil and we produce some of the sweetest grapes. Our flavors are unique to us and our part of the world. You will get to see inside the wine cellar and taste some of the magnificent quality wines bottled right here in Sevier County Tennessee. We can not visit every distiller on a single trip but here are a list of the locations we may visit on this tour: Hillside Winery, Sugarlands Cellars, Mill Bridge Winery, Apple Barn Winery, and Mountain Valley Winery. Departure time and return time are approximate.

ROARING FORK HISTORY TOUR: LENGTH: 4 HOURS APPROX.

TIME: 9:00 AM TO 1:00 PM (CURRENT ESTIMATE)

DESTINATION: ROARING FORK MOTOR NATURE TRAIL

This tour is a history and heritage tour visiting several historic homes and other sites on the 5.5 mile loop road known as the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. We will stop at and explore the Noah “Bud” Ogle property, Jim Bales property, and Alfred Reagan property. At each of the stops you will learn in depth about the families that lived at each site. The stories passed down from father to son and mother to daughter as far back as 1803. Between each location you will be introduced to the various hiking and nature trails located in the area as well as relevant information on them. This includes learning about Rainbow Falls, the parks tallest free falling water fall. Also, Grotto falls, the parks only walk behind water fall. We will also be making a stop at “The Place of a Thousand Drips” which is one of only 2 waterfalls in the park accessible by automobile. There are stops along the way which are great for folks who love to get a great photograph. We advise packing a picnic lunch or snacks for this trip because there are no facilities inside the loop. There is so much to see and learn in this small part of Great Smoky Mountains that it fills up a good part of a day. This tour does involve walking and getting into and out of a passenger van. Anyone with walking disabilities may want to consider one of our bus tours. There will be a bathroom break at the Rainbow Falls area. We will not be doing any long hikes to the larger waterfalls on this tour. This is a very in depth look at a small area of the Smokies and is especially recommended for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone who genuinely loves to learn about our local heritage.
