Pervious Street
Pervious concrete reduces the need for separate stormwater retention ponds and allows the use of smaller-capacity storm sewers. It also reduces runoff volume by trapping and slowly releasing precipitation into the ground.
Bioswales allow for the collection, conveyance, filtration and infiltration of stormwater for its later use throughout the site reducing runoff and sewer overflows.

Using 80% of the roof area, the site will implement the use of solar panels as the main source of energy. Solar power is pollution-free and causes no greenhouse gases to be emitted after installation as well as reducing the dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels.

Green roofs throughout the site will provide shade, remove heat from the air, and reduce temperatures of the roof surface and surrounding air. They will also reduce stormwater runoff and be part of the roof rainwater collection system.

ASTROGREEN The Astrodome, also known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, is an iconic landmark located in Houston, Texas. Completed in 1965, the Astrodome became the f irst domed multipurpose sport stadium in the world and one of the most visited man-made attractions in the country. The original plan of the Astrodome site has a radial symmetry with the Astrodome located in the center of the site. Today, the Astrodome sits on an orthogonal plan with the NRG stadium overpowering the forgotten Astrodome. Our goal is not only to revitalize the iconic status of the Astrodome, but also to build a Net-Zero district that follows the growing demand of live-work communities without the expense of the surrounding environment. With that idea in mind, we designed the AstroGreen, a net-zero neighborhood that will bring back the iconic status of the Astrodome by creating a radial pedestrian paseo that is superimposed on an orthogonal street grid, intersected by a walkable greenway that emphasizes the Astrodome as the Focal Point.

A GRAND PROCESSION The radial pedestrian paseo and organization of the major streets ties back to the original intended site plan for the Astrodome and surrounding area. The greenway provides large spaces for activities and walkability as well as a connection to the brays bayou greenway. We used the organization of the building heights to guide attention to the Astrodome and to also bring in the NRG stadium into a larger urban fabric that elevates the Astrodome instead of it overshadowing the Astrodome as it does now.

ASTRODOME AS A FOCAL POINT
ACHIEVING NET ZERO What makes our Site Sustainable? To make our project Net Zero, we began to consider strategies for a smarter use of water and power. One of which is capturing rainwater that would be treated and used for domestic water, while black water will be combined with food waste to produce bio-gas that powers our community shuttle. We also are implementing bioswales and pervious streets to absorb runoff water, and lastly PV on all of the roofs to provide all the energy needed for the entire site.

A S T R O PA R K Welcome to the AstroPark! An adaptive reuse plan that will restore the forgotten Astrodome back to its iconic status, by incorporating nature, entertainment and marketplace all within the existing structure of the Astrodome. To create a more open and inviting experience, the exterior cladding of the Astrodome will be removed to reveal the steel f rame structure that allows pockets of nature and landscape to be f illed on the exterior, allowing the central interior to become a mixed use space for carnivals, concerts, amusement parks, farmers market and additions of the rodeo.

Site located in Galveston, the idea of the sand comes f rom the origins of the barrier islands creation along with it being an excessive and local material. The sand dune acts not only as a fun, interactive and historical monument for the island but as an inf rastructure for safety, education and view on the organics and natural form of sand dunes.
