‘The giant impact theory.’

Moon compared to Earth

No one knows for sure how

Did you know that the average distance from the moon to the Earth is actually thirty times Earths diameter? That means that the moon is way closer to Earth than the actual size of Earth. It would take sixteen days for someone on Earth to fly to the moon at a constant speed of 1000 kilometers per hour. If you ask me, that’s a long time!

our moon was formed, but there a few hypothesis and theories. ‘The giant impact theory’ so far is the most convincing. This theory says that an object about the size of mars impacted on the earth in its late stages of formation and formed what is now known as the moon. A

lot of people believe in this theory so for now, this is how our moon was created.

First quarter: moon sets around midnight. It is half way full with the dark side to the left.

Waxing crescent: sets in the west after sunset.

Compositions of the Moon The moon has many characteristics that make it unique. On the moons surface, there are dark spots, called seas, but they don’t contain water. The seas are flat region. The light spots on the moon are called highlands. They are rugged and are higher than the seas.

Third quarter: you will not see this phase anytime before midnight.

The moon takes 27.3 days to orbit earth. During that time, it is slowly rotating around our planet earth, creating the four seasons: Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Here is a timeline of a the major spacecrafts that were sent to the moon during 1959-1965 Waning gibbous: you will often see this moon in the west in the early morning, floating in the pale blue sky.

In 1959, four spacecrafts were sent to the moon: Luna 1, Pioneer 4, Luna 2, and Luna 3, all unmanned. In 1961, two were sent: Ranger 1 and Ranger 2, also unmanned.

In 1962, NASA sent Ranger 3, 4, and 5. They were manned. Full moon: a lunar phase that occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun.

In 1963, NASA sent only one. It was Luna 4, also manned.

In 1965, NASA sent Ranger 8 and 9, Luna 5, 6, 7, and 8, and they also sent Zond 3. Two were manned and the rest were unmanned.
