Greetings from Dave Dear GMVS Community, It was with great pride that we kicked off the new school year with our first all-school assembly in the Doug Parker Auditorium. The entire community of students, parents and staff gathered to review the new “GMVS Code” (p.3). The Code outlines our mission, our vision, and an informal code of conduct for the entire GMVS community. We have incorporated it wherever possible in school assemblies, in our advisee sessions and in all areas of student life. The orientation hike at Sugarbush (featured in the cover photo) allowed staff and students to delve into important topics from The Code as they stopped at stations to do group activities. It was a great way to set the tone for the year.
As you read through this year’s Annual Report, you’ll see the strength of our community and the incredible generosity of our donors. This support is essential as we implement the Strategic Plan and bring our new GMVS vision to life. We are grateful to our entire community of supporters. We are excited about our new pursuits and the promise of the upcoming race season. What a wonderful group of student-athletes we have. We wish all the GMVS community a happy and healthy 2016! Sincerely,
Dave Gavett GMVS Headmaster

We also continue the progress on our Strategic Plan Initiatives (outlined on p.29). We are working to enhance programs and procedures and have made significant improvements in many areas, including communication and student life programming. Our new communications platform, myGMVS, offers parents more visibility into their students’ daily academic and athletic experiences. It is also an effective tool for teachers and coaches to streamline communication throughout the GMVS community. Other programmatic changes have been designed to support a more cohesive community. Creation of a formal gathering space in the Doug Parker Auditorium with improved acoustics and seating is facilitating a series of all-school assemblies, guest speakers, wellness programs, parent meetings and the theater program.

The GMVS Code - Building a Community One exciting initiative this past summer was the creation of “The GMVS Code”, a document that outlines the mission, the vision, and an informal code of conduct for the entire GMVS community. During the first week of school, staff and students delved into the important messages of The Code as they stopped at stations during the “Orient-AWESOME” hike at Sugarbush. We have posted copies of The Code throughout campus and continue to reinforce it in many of our community-building events, including school assemblies, advisee group sessions and many areas of student life. Our Vision GMVS is an exceptional school that balances a worldclass ski racing program with an outstanding academic program. Through this design, we encourage our students to pursue their full potential, passion and personal excellence, while developing the fundamental character traits that will enable them to achieve success in life. Our Mission GMVS embraces a commitment to excellence shared by the entire school community: faculty and staff, students, parents, trustees and alumni. We believe excellence can be achieved by striving for one’s personal best and following our core values. At GMVS, our core values include: • discipline • passion • humility • total commitment & effort • responsibility • hard work & grit • sportsmanship • leadership • respect • compassion • honesty • grace • independent initiative • strong will & indomitable spirit
In honor of these values, the entire school community will follow the GMVS Code of Conduct. We will… • • • • • • • •
Be respectful and kind, to ourselves and others Notice the small things that need to be done and do them Accept the “rocks in the road” and embrace the challenges they present Embrace failure for the learning opportunities it provides Be appreciative of the opportunities we have each day Use sports as a metaphor for a lifelong love of learning and adventure Be relentlessly positive Respect the professional expertise of those around us
• • • • • •
Do what is right rather than what is expedient Remain engaged in and supportive of the program Protect and support students and staff to stand up for each other Value all students and ensure that their hard work is celebrated by peers and adults Engage in healthy feedback and debate Hold ourselves and others accountable for upholding these core values
Results do matter to us and competition is important, but at GMVS we pursue a path to meaningful accomplishment. Upholding these core values enables us to produce our best results, the right way. This is not an either/or scenario; it is not results over values, or values over results. It is a journey we each travel in pursuit of our own personal best, and therefore what is best for our community as a whole. The GMVS Code is a permission slip...to help all of us make the right choices and succeed. 63

Fall Soccer Varsity Boys Recap by Jere Brophy
The 2015 edition of the GMVS boys’ soccer team ended its campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 defeat at U-32 in the first round of the playoffs. The result, however, does not reflect the season as a whole. The young team showed immense growth throughout the season, and despite a very tough schedule and the challenges that our own calendar creates, the boys put on an impressive show, despite its 4-6-1 record. The team enjoyed wins against ski academy rivals Stratton Mt. School, an always-tough Vergennes team, and a scrappy Enosburg squad. They also gained an impressive overtime tie at Division 3 (champion/runnersup) Stowe, proving their mettle while being short 4 key players due to illness and injury. It was not easy for the team to rebound from the graduation of seven starting seniors last year, but the boys put in a terrific effort all season. Led by co-captains Carter Kendig ’16 and Jake Grabowski ’17, the squad improved with each contest. Kendig led all scorers with 6 goals in 11 games, while Grabowski anchored a defensive line that will be intact again next season. Many young players and newcomers got significant playing time throughout the year, and several regulars on JV will be ready to step into the lineup right from the start.

JV Boys Recap
by Coach BB Baker The Boys’ JV Soccer team had a very successful season competing with some of the strongest programs in the state. As a team, the boys progressed quickly, adapting to the speed of play and physicality of high school soccer. Of particular note is that over 50% of our roster is comprised of athletes who are 8th graders, while our opponents typically field teams comprised of primarily sophomores and juniors. Three from our roster, Charlie Lang, Johann Meyer, and Zach Roman made appearances with the varsity as well, seeing significant playing time during the team’s run to the playoffs. Given the strength and ability of this young squad, peppered with the experience gained from the players who were called up to the senior squad, the future is bright for the GMVS Boys’ Soccer Program.

GMVS MAGAZINE FALL 2015
The GMVS 2015 girl’s soccer team had a great rebuilding year. They started off the season with very few starters from last year’s semi-final team. The girls worked hard during every practice and really started to gel as a team. The defensive line was lead by all freshmen and sophomores. During the playoff games, they showed they could handle the best that the other teams could throw at them with only one goal each in game playoff game. The defense shut down the best forward in all of Division 2. Our midfield and forward lines started to put together some great passes and created several opportunities up front with at least eight different people scoring goals this year. In the goal, we had two freshmen who shared time and started to take ownership of the position. We will be losing our two senior captains, Frede LeRoux & Edie Doemland. We will miss them but, with the majority of the team coming back, it should be a great 2016 season.

GMVS Presents “Les Misérables”
“As one of a handful of people in the audience who actually remembers the original Godspell in the cafeteria, I was really moved by how far the theater program has come. As always, Dave brings out the best in the kids. I see how GMVS gives kids a great team experience, maintains ties with alumni, and also showcases such an incredible program to the Valley.” - Ali Hobart, P’20 and daughter of GMVS founders, Al and Jane Hobart

This year marked the 30th anniversary of Les Misérables’ first Broadway performance, and GMVS performed the show for a second time. In a memorable tribute, a few of the main cast members from 2002 production performed an encore with this year’s cast. At the end of Saturday’s performance, Headmaster Dave Gavett honored three individuals for their long-term commitment to the GMVS Theatre Program: Piero Bonamico, Musical Director (20 years), Cindy (Gavett) Mumford, General Manager (30 years) and Leslie Reynolds, Costumes (30 years).

“I experienced an extraordinary play where I had the chance to know the GMVS pupils, not only as students, as athletes, and as racers but also as artists, as singers, and as backstageproducers. I had the chance to share their sensitivity, their brilliance with their wonderful work and have breathed through the baton of the conductor and his orchestra! Thank you very much for this unique play. I can only applaud and shed tears of emotion.” - Marthe McClellan, P’18

Alpine Update by Steve Utter
We’re off to a great school year after two new summer camps in Fonna (Norway), Wittenburg (Germany) and an eventful trip to Chile. A series of earthquakes and aftershocks during our Chile camp definitely gave our GMVS community a great chance to bond, and we all returned safely to an enjoyable fall foliage season in the Valley. Below are some of the key highlights and updates: •

Our camp progression is effective. We’ve been able to offer the appropriate technical progression, based on how much on-snow time our racers have had. For the first time, GMVS had a slalom-specific camp in Wittenburg, Germany, in contrast to a more traditional summer camp in Fonna, Norway. The Fonna trip evolved as a result of poor snow conditions in Mt. Hood but turned out to be a great training opportunity and amazing cultural experience. The Conditioning program continues to evolve. Many of our coaches undertook FMS (Functional Movement Screening) training last spring, and the training has allowed our coaching staff to evaluate movements and offer corrections for every athlete. We are able to track progress on each individual throughout the season and from year to year. Scott Kennison is settling in to his new role as Equipment Manager. Scott is robustly expert at his job. His kind and thoughtful willingness to help anyone at any time makes him a welcome addition to our staff. The RPC has been in use for more than a year. We continue to use the Racing Performance Center more efficiently and effectively every week. On any given day, athletes are building muscle in the weight room, practicing agility in the gym, doing yoga in the dance studio, recovering in the PT area, attending a sports psychology seminar in the conference room, or spinning on bikes on the mezzanine. As a complement to the training available in the RPC, we also make every effort to get creative and challenge ourselves outside. Hill sprints with weight vests, agility workouts on the field, and mountain bike rides throughout the Valley have frequently been part of our fall training. The GMVS Code for Athletics and GMVS “Statement on Athlete Management” are engergizing our programs. Staff is collaborating to refine language for these documents. These two documents highlight longstanding institutional values that help clarify our expectations and vision.
•
Educational seminars are a regular part of the schedule. GMVS Sport Psychology Teacher, Dan Petrocelli, has led a series of regular seminars for both athletes and coaches on topics including motivation, “choking”, concentration, harnessing emotions, and goal setting. Dani Koch has also covered topics such as winter maintenance conditioning and regeneration, and Sarah Despres educated the athletes on nutrition, focusing on the finer points of fueling while on the road at camps and races. We are embracing the new platform for communication, myGMVS. At the beginning of the year, we posted weekly conditioning schedules and progressed to group reports from Chile, camp evaluations, philosophical statements, links, downloads and much, much more.

Nordic Update by Garrott Kuzzy
For the GMVS Nordic Team, summer and fall have been eventful and full of changes. In June, GMVS hosted the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) Regional Elite Group (REG) camp for 40 of New England’s best Nordic athletes. GMVS coaches Justin Beckwith and Shane MacDowell headed the camp along with US Ski Team Head Women’s coach, Matt Whitcomb. The event is an important piece of the USSA Development Pipeline and offers junior skiers a great opportunity to train with National Team coaches. The REG camp was a resounding success, showcasing the GMVS Racing Performance Center as well as the training environment in the surrounding Mad River Valley. The GMVS Nordic team also hosted two summer camps for local athletes in 2015, and we look forward to hosting the REG camp as well as local camps next year. The summer brought several changes to the program, including the departure of long-time coach Justin Beckwith who was instrumental in building and developing the GMVS Nordic team for the past several years. Beckwith remains committed to us through the fall and even led the team with new Nordic Coach, Katrina Howe, on our annual fall trip to Mals, Italy. Nordic Director Garrott Kuzzy joined the program in late September after the team returned from Italy (see editor’s note below). With winter right around the corner, the Nordic team is excited about upcoming camps in Lake Placid at the Olympic Training Center and in West Yellowstone, Montana. Cold temperatures encourage the prospects of skiing on man-made snow at the Olympic ski jump complex. Shortly after Lake Placid, the team heads to Yellowstone for their annual fall camp. The team will compete in several early season races, but the primary focus of the camp is to spend quality time on snow. Our training includes skiing into Yellowstone, where we’re sure to see bison, elk, and hot springs during long adventure skis. No trip to Big Sky country would be complete without a trip to Big Sky, where the team will wrap up the camp with a day of well-earned Alpine skiing! Stay tuned this spring for the next update on the GMVS Nordic race season or follow our adventures at http:// gmvsxc.blogspot.com/

Editor’s note: In late September, Garrott Kuzzy officially joined GMVS as Nordic Director to lead the program and team along with Nordic Coach, Katrina Howe. Kuzzy graduated from Middlebury College and competed on the World Cup and at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Since 2011, he worked as Product Director at VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations in Bristol, VT, developing Nordic ski tours throughout Europe, bicycle tours in Germany and hiking tours in the U.S. National Parks. Howe joined GMVS in August. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training in 2009. She was a member of the US Biathlon Development Team in 2009-2010 and part of the Maine Winter Sports Center Olympic Development Program for five years. Together they make a great team and are eager for their first GMVS Nordic racing season.

Josh Slocum ’94 and Row New York by Kimberley Reynolds
If there is anything that GMVS taught Josh Slocum, Class of 1994, it is to work hard but to also be nimble and adaptable, training that has proved as invaluable off the hill as it has on. Like many athletes before him, and many after, Slocum started cycling at GMVS to train for ski racing. One thing led to another, and he started to bike race during the summers. “I found the endurance, patience, and pain tolerance required in bike racing to be very appealing. Don’t ask me why,” he writes. He thought he would bike race in college, but when he got to Princeton in the fall of 1994, he “found his way to rowing instead”. Rowing would become central to his life at college and influence his future, leading to his involvement in Row New York, a nonprofit organization in New York City that strives to empower underprivileged youth through rowing and academics. After Princeton (1994-1998), Josh worked in investment banking and then attended Harvard Business School (2002-2004). He is now a managing director at Chieftain Capital Management, Inc., an investment advisory firm based in Manhattan. Along the way he married and had children (four daughters). At his business school graduation, the dean told the graduating class that success in business was meaningless without success at home. “I think of this every day, and it impacts everything I do.”
Row New York
Josh was introduced to Row New York through a friend. Realizing the positive impact that sports had played on his life, he was excited to take a spot on the board, helping to set strategy and manage finances as well as to participate in outreach and fundraising efforts. Row New York was started by Amanda Krauss in 2002 with ten girls sculling salvaged equipment on Meadow Lake in Queens. Based on what she had seen and participated in as a coach in Girls Row Boston, she adopted the simple idea that competitive rowing combined with tough academic programs for underserved kids could change the course of their lives. The organization now serves 230 middle and high schoolers (both male and female) in New York City who train on the water and at the gym and participate in academic programs (SAT prep, college planning) six days a week, nearly all year long. In addition, Row New York serves more than 2,200 people across all of their programs, including, among other services, para-rowing for athletes with physical and/or cognitive disabilities and programs for adults. “Nothing is better than watching the kids we serve achieve their own goals,” Josh writes. Rowing was at the core of his life at Princeton. Perhaps the kids at Row New York will follow in his footsteps. Kimberley Reynolds is a writer and editor who lives in Warren, Vermont. She is mom to three GMVS students, Gabriel ’14, Katy ’15 and Sophie ’19.

Row New York strives to change these statistics: • • •
One-third of children and teens in New York State are overweight or obese. Only 9% of children from low-income families obtain a college degree. Only 6% of students at the nation’s 200 most selective colleges come from the bottom income quartile.
Row New York at a Glance:
Student-Athletes come from all over NYC: • •
46 High Schools 20 Middle Schools
They represent cultures from across the world: • •
30% first generation Americans 25% immigrants
And show the great diversity of the city: • • • • •
46% Hispanic 24% African-American 18% White 5% Asian 7% Native American, Middle Eastern & other ethnicities
College Stats: 98% of Row New York graduates go to college vs. 69% of New York State high school students. 90% of college-going Row New Yorkers go on to graduate vs. 53% nationwide. www.rownewyork.org
On Sports “I think all sports teach valuable lessons, but different sports accentuate different things. Looking at my sports: rowing requires team-work, coordination, consistency, and discipline; bike-racing requires endurance and patience, and I think, for its part, ski-racing has helped prepare me for the unexpected.” On Princeton “I probably performed better academically as a rower than I would have without a sport. Rowing also develops (and demands) other traits that I have found to be very positive: team-work and coordination, persistence and consistency, reliability, pain-tolerance, etc.… It’s a wonderful sport, in and of itself, and also as a metaphor for life.” On Life and Work “To an extent, a ski-racer has to be able to ‘let go’ and take things in stride. The weather, snow conditions, and changes in terrain can’t be planned for. It was an important lesson for me. Indeed, in my life, I’ve tried to set goals and chart a course, while also being open to unexpected opportunities, learning from set-backs, and playing the hand I’ve been dealt.” On GMVS “GMVS taught me to work hard and be focused, but also to be nimble, adaptable, flexible.”

Ken Zemach ’87 Update from the summer of 2015: Had an amazing summer. Came in 2nd in the mountainous and difficult Santa Barbara 100 mile run, then spent several weeks with my awesome daughter who came over to the US from the UK. Next up: finished 39th / 31 hours in the notoriously brutal “Spartathlon,” a 153 mile non-stop run in Greece from Athens to Sparta, retracing the message run of Pheidippides BEFORE the battle of Marathon. And lastly, Haideh and I celebrated our first anniversary! In other news, spent some time with Matt Francis (‘88) and his family as we prepare to move to Reno next year as I’ll be running the materials lab in Tesla’s new ‘Gigafactory.’
1990s
Reid Greenberg ’91 Team Greenberg is enjoying their relocation from Warren to Moretown, VT. The move saves Reid 40 minutes per day on his commute to Burlington where he works as the Director of Digital Strategy and Consumer Engagement at Seventh Generation. His wife, Laurie, teaches 3/4 grade at Warren Elementary School. The Greenberg children, 12, 9 and 5 are busy with school and a variety of activities such as Biathlon, XC running, and Taekwon-Do (Reid also participates). Laurie still finds time to compete in ultra-marathons and is one of the top-ranked ultra-runners in the state.
Scott Kennison ’97 I’m now the new Equipment Manager at GMVS. I am really excited to be working at a place I love and with kids that share the same enthusiasm for the outdoors as I have.
Worm (Jeremy) Transue ’01 I am happy to announce my marriage to Olivia Hoermann. We were married in Exeter, NH. We are excited for the arrival the newest GMVS family member, Baby Transue, who is due December 1, 2015!
Lauren Butze ’02 On August 15th, 2015 I got married to Vincent Roux! We celebrated this big day in Mill Valley, California overlooking the entire San Francisco Bay. Our wedding consisted of family and close friends. GMVS alumni in attendance were Lindsay (Brush) Getz ’02, and Kelly Brush Davisson ’04, and board member Charlie Brush. Days after the wedding we came back to Jackson, WY, sold our condo, and bought a town home. We are in the process of a large renovation and can’t wait to officially move in!

2000s Travis Cloud ’02 Everything is going great but very busy. Zoe Parys Cloud was born on August 15th at 6 pounds 14 ounces. Additionally, we purchased a house in Stamford, CT a month before Zoe was born. Monica and I are enjoying being new parents. Hope all is going well with the GMVS community. Winter will be here soon.
Austin Nelson ’03 Just wanted to share with the GMVS community the newest addition to the Nelson Family, Brinkley Moon Nelson, born 9.9.15, Aspen Valley Hospital, 7.1lbs. Kelly Brush Davisson ’04 I’m living in Cumberland, ME (just outside of Portland) with my husband Zeke and our dog, Lexi. I’ve been working for 2 years as a pediatric nurse practitioner at a family practice which I love. I also do a lot of work with the Kelly Brush Foundation in my free time, which has been going really well. Buddy (Wheaton) Simis ’04 I’m working on the video team at Bark & Co., writing, shooting, and editing video content for the web. It’s fun!
Micaela Holland ’07 I’m loving being at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. I just finished my MBA from Clarkson with a certificate in Entrepreneurship and New Venture Management. I was offered this totally sweet job so I couldn’t be happier! Here is a press release from Clarkson. “The Clarkson University Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Micaela Holland as the Golden Knights’ Interim Head Coach for Alpine Skiing. She will also serve as the department’s Outdoor Recreation Director. Holland previously served as the program’s assistant coach from 2013-2015, helping guide the team to some of its best finishes in history.” Natacha Lefebvre ’08 I completed my first ironman this summer. It was a great experience! I loved it! I did 3 half-ironman races with my brother before the fullironman.

Alexa Dlouhy ’14 I spent my PG year racing with the Quebec team. I loved my coaches, had the chance to compete in a new environment, and discovered new ski areas. I am now at Dartmouth College, where I aim to continue racing at a high level while pursuing my academic interests. This term I am taking Marine Policy, Sociology of the Palestinian Israeli conflict and Human Rights. I love spending time on the Connecticut River: swimming or canoeing, but I miss the unique beauty of Valley. Here is a picture of Clara Lopez Costa ‘14 with me in Costa Brava, Spain. I was lucky to have a great visit with her after my ski camp in France this summer. Mikaela O’Brien ’15 This summer I had two great ski camps in France and Chile. Other than that, I’ve been training a lot and looking forward for the snow to come! It’s different not being in school, but it’s great to have more time to focus on skiing. Dear GMVS Community, We have so much to celebrate at GMVS. Every time I come to campus and see our students in action, I am reminded of the purpose of our work. GMVS is comprised of incredible teachers, coaches, students and our extended community of alumni, parents and friends. Each year, we celebrate our community’s phenomenal support. This support is a strong gauge of the robust health of GMVS and a terrific indication of what is to come. As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am thrilled with the direction the school is headed. The Board, together with our faculty and staff, is fully engaged in the implementation of our five-year Strategic Plan, “Celebrating Our Legacy, Charting Our Future”. It is a privilege to see the impact of this thoughtful work and the energy generated on campus. Over the past two years, a focus on campus facilities has us kicking off our second year in the RPC. We are also enjoying the newly renovated Weiss Academic Building as well as the Kent Coughlin Science Center. Finally, significant enhancements to the Doug Parker Student Center have transformed the way our community gathers. These “brick and mortar” initiatives have laid the groundwork for the key objectives of our Strategic Plan. As we reflect on this past year, I would like to thank those in our community who have worked so hard to bring us this far. It is a pleasure to work with so many of you who care so passionately about GMVS. The best is yet to come! Thank you,
Jane Goldstein, P’09 Chair of the Board of Trustees

The Benefits of Giving Wisely
DID YOU KNOW….. • Giving appreciated stock gives you more tax benefits than giving cash? • The surplus cash in your life insurance policy can be gifted to GMVS? • A new life insurance policy can be used to fund an endowment? • You can donate your house, take a deduction, and still live there for the rest of your life? Contact the Development Office at development@gmvs.org for more information. “As parents, we could not be more impressed with our son’s experience at GMVS. We have seen such a positive growth in him as both a student and athlete, and he has developed into a fine young gentleman. His involvement with GMVS has been an enormous success for all of us.” - Rich and Carroll Armstrong P’15

Strategic Plan Update - Celebrating our Legacy, Charting our Future by Jane Goldstein and Mike Krupka
The Board of Trustees initiated a formal Strategic Planning process in the early fall of 2014. We updated and expanded upon the prior Strategic Plan which had been completed in 2010 and launched a shared vision for the future of GMVS. Board members Dave Gavett, Jane Goldstein, Pete Rapelye, Jared Cadwell, Terry Kellogg and Mike Krupka comprised the Strategic Planning Committee that conducted a series of individual and group discussions with staff, students, parents, alumni and board members. Several on-line surveys were completed, and other external information was gathered. The work was summarized in a formal Strategic Plan Summary Report. The Key Objectives and Initiatives outlined in the report are: • • • • • • • • •
Management and Communication Faculty/Staff Development Professional Development Technology The GMVS Story Diversity Financial Sustainability Space and Time Student Leadership
In the spring of 2015, the Board created an implementation plan. Operational Committees were created for each initiative, comprised of staff and board members, and chaired by a board member. Our Headmaster, Dave Gavett, and Assistant Headmaster, Tim Harris, sit on each committee to provide consistency across all the initiatives. We anticipate that these are ongoing committees which will continually work to bring Board expertise and engagement to the GMVS mission. We will strive to have a balance of staff and board members across all the committees. Each committee has reviewed its short and longer term imperatives, created action plans, and in many cases, already begun implementing initiatives. The committees will engage other members of the staff, the GMVS Community, and external sources as needed in order to ensure that they capture the broadest and deepest views possible on their respective topics. Most importantly, we view the Strategic Plan implementation as a transparent exercise aimed at achieving our next level of excellence consistent with our mission. We will begin reporting on the specific goals, initiatives, and results of the committees in the near future. We look forward to working with the entire community and welcome your feedback!

GMVS FACULTY FUND GMVS invests in professional development with the support of our Faculty Fund. Our current Faculty Fund is more than $600,000. It was created to provide dedicated funds to support, recruit and retain faculty - the heart of GMVS. This endowed fund enables our talented faculty and staff to grow as teachers, coaches, mentors and leaders.
Project Based Learning: Transforming Education by Alice Rodgers
In June, GMVS teachers participated in an exciting three-day workshop conducted by the Buck Institute of Education. In this intensive hands-on workshop, teachers learned to design and implement project based learning. In project based learning, students collaborate on meaningful projects that require critical thinking, creativity and communication to answer challenging questions or solve complex problems. Authentic and rigorous project based learning puts students on a path that deepens their knowledge and builds the skills they need for the future. About the Workshop “This was perhaps the single most powerful workshop that I have ever attended. The Buck Institute hit it out of the park. I am excited to implement PBL this year and I look forward to continuing our dialogue surrounding the challenges and best practices of PBL.” Grace Emelett
How Project Based Learning has Changed Teachers’ Views About Teaching and Student Learning “It brings me back to the importance of student discovery as a more valuable and effective way to learn with the teacher as guide and facilitator.” - Cathy Plas “I am much more cognizant about the power of placing students at the center of their own leaning where they actively construct meaning and take greater ownership. Instead of being the ‘sage on stage’, I am now the ‘guide on the side’.” - Alice Rodgers “It has reinforced my beliefs that students should be the authors or pilots of their own learning. I believe that exploration and discovery fuel student learning and that my role is to stimulate that inquiry process.” - Grace Emelett

What Projects Teachers Are Planning This Year “Research, design, and put into place an alternative energy system that can be used in this community.” - Olivia Hoermann Transue “Propose solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by engaging in a policy deliberation summit and acting as a representative of one of the parties to the conflict.” - Alice Rodgers “Design a ski area using linear equations.” - Kathy Mehuron “Be the Change project: Identify a need that exists in Vermont, research that need and design a program to address that need. Essential questions: If you had infinite power to change your community for the better, where would you start? Who needs help? What needs to be changed? How can you make a positive difference locally?” - Alice Rodgers
“I give to GMVS because when I look at the positive aspects of my life, many are a result of the doors GMVS opened for me. GMVS was the catalyst for my love of travel, skiing in college, moving to Jackson, WY, establishing lifelong friendships, and becoming a teacher. So many of my beliefs and passions are rooted in what I learned at GMVS.” - Lauren Butze Roux ’02

Spotlight on a GMVS Volunteer “Leslie worked incredibly hard and late into the night for days on end in order for us to have all-around spectacular costumes throughout the whole production, and she did all of this while humbly ducking any praise or recognition. The success of the production was largely due to to countless hours she spent making each and every character come to life, transforming GMVS students.” - GMVS Student, Victor Wiacek Leslie Reynolds has been designing, sewing and creating costumes for our GMVS theater productions since her own daughter, Gwen, performed in Cabaret 30 years ago! Over the years, Leslie has made the majority of the costumes for every GMVS production.
“Leslie was always on top of it, ready to help out, and ready to do anything she had to do to make the productions look as magical as they were.” - Edie Doemland ’16 “Leslie is one of the most loving and hardworking people on the planet. Never have I seen so much care go into making sure that everyone looks and feels great!”- Tim Gavett ’16
As Leslie says, “I have seen so many miracles with the kids. The confidence that they get from performing transforms them from being a shy teenager to someone that can belt it out singing on stage. I love seeing the comaraderie and how the students end up taking care of one another. It is amazing watching them discover the inner strength that they don’t know they have. It is also so impressive watching the final result of personal growth and their great success of memorizing their lines, learning dance moves, and remembering where they need to be on the stage.” A heartfelt thank you to Leslie for her countless hours of time and her unparalleled dedication to the GMVS theater program! We are truly grateful.
THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS! Your participation benefits us all.
