Fingerprinted Herbs Once the herbal species has been confirmed by TLC analysis, the herb is dried, ground into a powder and encapsulated or pressed into a tablet. This process results in a high quality, yet economic range of “whole herb� preparations. Whole herb preparations usually provide a gentler dose and can be used for long-term and preventative protocols.
Standardized Herbs A standardized herbal extract provides a uniform and guaranteed level of a particular active ingredient in each capsule or tablet. In most cases this is the chemical component which has been identified in scientific studies as having the main medicinal benefit or affect. Standardized herbs are often more potent and are usually recommended for short-term treatment of acute conditions.

ALFALFA (Medicago sativa) Alfalfa is a rich source of beta carotene and high in many key minerals. It is used as a natural diuretic to relieve oedema and may assist in the relief of urinary tract disorders. It is also used as an appetite stimulant and nutritive.
ALOE VERA (Aloe barbadensis) The gel and juice of Aloe Vera is widely used internally to soothe inflammation of the large intestine and can assist in the treatment of constipation, flatulence and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.
ASHWAGANDHA (Withania somnifera) This herb is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine as a nervous system tonic for those suffering from fatigue and physical stress. It is also used to manage symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and poor libido. Ashwagandha can be used to help people recover from illness or medical treatment and to support the immune system.
ASTRAGALUS (Astragalus membranaceus) Used traditionally in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to enhance the immune system and protect the body from the damaging effect of stress. It may also be useful for a variety of chronic immune conditions. Aloe Vera
ARTICHOKE (Cynara scolymus) This edible vegetable is a member of the Milk Thistle family and has traditionally been used to support digestive health. Artichoke improves the flow of bile from the liver and gall bladder and is widely used for lowering high cholesterol and improving bowel function.
BILBERRY (Vaccinium myrtillus) The purple/blue pigments of the bilberry are high in antioxidants and other nutrients which protect and strengthen small blood vessels and other tissues. Bilberry has long been associated with improving the health and function of eyes; reducing fatigue and strain, improving night blindness, protecting against macular degeneration and hypertensive retinopathy. It can also be used to improve varicose veins and blood circulation.
BLACK COHOSH (Cimicifuga racemosa) The standardized extract of this herb can be used for relieving mild menopausal symptoms such as depression, hot flushes, mood swings, insomnia and excessive perspiration. It can be used alone, with other herbs, or in conjunction with HRT.
BORAGE SEED OIL (Borago officinalis) This rich source of GLA (Omega 6 gamma linolenic acid) is used to reduce the symptoms and discomfort of inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, psoriasis and seborrhoea.
Bilberry
BOSWELLIA (Boswellia serrata) This potent anti-inflammatory herb is used to manage the pain and discomfort associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s diseae and Ulcerative Colitis.
BROMELAIN This enzyme derived from the pineapple plant is used as a digestive aid to improve the digestion and absorption of proteins. As an anti-inflammatory, it can help heal minor injuries and swelling associated with sprains, strains and muscle trauma. Bromelain appears to reduce and remove swollen tissue and can be effective for treating sinusitis and mucous congestion.
CAT’S CLAW (Uncaria tomentose) This herb from the South American rainforests has immunity enhancing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It can be recommended for both acute and chronic immune disease including infections in the upper respiratory and digestive tracts. It may also assist with joint inflammation associated with an immune response.
CAYENNE (Capsicum annuum) The phytonutrients in cayenne stimulate blood circulation, metabolic rate and have anti-inflammatory properties. This herb is usually recommended to those with poor peripheral circulation, digestive weakness and sluggish metabolism.
CRANBERRY (Vaccinium macrocarpon) Whole berry extracts and juice concentrates of cranberry have been shown to treat and prevent recurrent cystitis by inhibiting the adhesion of bacteria in the bladder and urethra.
DANDELION (Taraxacum officinale) The root of the dandelion herb stimulates the release of bile from the liver and gall bladder. It can be used to support general digestion and liver function, relieve constipation and flatulence. It is often used to treat skin conditions which are associated with poor bowel function.
DEVIL’S CLAW (Harpagophytum procumbens) This herb from Southern Africa is used to reduce pain and inflammation associated with musculo-skeletal problems such as arthritis and back pain. It can also be used as a digestive stimulant to increase stomach acidity.
DONG QUAI (Angelica sinensis) Traditionally used to treat painful or irregular menstruation, endometriosis and poor circulation, this herb is also common amongst older women suffering menopausal symptoms.
Cranberry
ECHINACEA (Echinacea purpurea, E. angustifolia) This popular remedy has been scientifically proven to stimulate and modulate the immune system. It can be used for all acute bacterial and viral infections such as common cold and influenza where it has been shown to reduce the length and severity of sickness. It is also recommended for sinusitis, bronchitis, gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections, skin disease, mouth ulcers. It may also be indicated in cases of chronic immune and autoimmune conditions.
ELDERBERRY (Sambuccua nigra) This herb is used to reduce fever and stimulate expectoration of phlegm. It is used mainly for acute respiratory conditions such as cold, flu, sinusitis and bronchitis to reduce congestion and reduce symptoms.
EVENING PROMROSE OIL (Oethera biennis) The oil from the Evening Primrose seed is high in Omega 6 oils which has anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used for a wide range of skin, joint and digestive disorders. EPO may also reduce the severity of premenstrual syndrome and mastalgia.
FENUGREEK (Trigonella foenumgraecum) This culinary herb may reduce blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. It has also shown to lower cholesterol and fat in the blood stream. Fenugreek has traditionally been used to clear excess mucous from the body and to settle dyspepsia and gastritis.
Echinacea
FEVERFEW (Tanacetum parthenium) Long term use of Feverfew has been shown to prevent the recurrence of migraine or tension headache. It may also be used in large doses for acute migraine headaches.
FLAXSEED and FLAXSEED OIL Flaxseed Oil is a good source of essential fatty acids which support healthy skin, connective tissue and joint health. Ground flaxseed contains soluble fiber which is an effective laxative. Studies suggest that alpha-linolenic acid (a substance found in flaxseed and flaxseed oil) may benefit people with heart disease. Recent studies have looked at the effects of flaxseed on high cholesterol levels, as well as its possible role in preventing conditions such as heart disease and osteoporosis.
GARLIC (Allium sativum) One of the oldest and most widely used medicinal foods, garlic has been shown to help reduce cholesterol and fats in the bloodstream, atherosclerosis (accumulation of plaque in the arteries) and high blood pressure. With anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, it is also used with common cold and flu and other respiratory conditions (hayfever), Candida, fungal infections and gastric parasites.
GINGER (Zingiber officinale) With warming and soothing properties, ginger is used for all instances of nausea such as morning sickness and travel sickness. It can also improve stomach digestion, reduce heart burn and increase appetite. Ginger is also an anti-inflammatory herb useful for managing arthritis and inflammatory respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis.
GINKGO (Ginkgo biloba) The leaves of this ancient plant have been shown to thin the blood and stimulate circulation particularly to small blood vessels. They are also high in antioxidant activity. Ginkgo is believed to enhance brain function and protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, improve retinal blood flow and prevent macular degeneration and possibly manage the symptoms of tinnitus.
AMERICAN GINSENG (Panax quinquefolius) All ginsengs are classified as “adaptogens” in that they increase the body’s resistance to the impact of stress. This species is less stimulating than species such as Korean Ginseng, and more suitable for the young and elderly. American ginseng is also shows immune enhancing qualities.
KOREAN GINSENG (Panax Ginseng) Korean ginseng is the most potent stimulant amongst the ginsengs. It can be taken for an immediate boost of energy, vitality and endurance. Traditionally Korean ginseng was also used to boost libido and fertility.
Ginger
SIBERIAN GINSENG (Eleutherococcus senticosus) Made famous by Russian cosmonauts and athletes, this herb has been shown to effectively reduce the negative impact of physical and mental stress, improve athletic performance and strengthen the immune system.
GOTU KOLA (Centella asiatica) The leaves of the herb are used to promote healing, support a health nervous system and improve circulation. Gotu Kola is used to heal any inflammation or damage to the skin, connective tissue, lymphatic tissue, blood vessels or mucous membrane.
GOLDEN SEAL (Hydrastis canadensis) This herb has antibacterial, antimicrobial qualities and also helps to restore the structure and function of the delicate mucous membrane lining the respiratory tract. It is recommended for all upper respiratory and bronchial conditions. It can also be used in cases of gastrointestinal infection, gastritis and peptic ulcers.
GRAPE SEED (Vitis Vinifera) The potent antioxidant qualities of grape seed can stabilise collagen and protect the structure and function of small vessels throughout the body. Grape seed may assist in conditions such as varicose veins, retinopathy, ageing and sun damaged skin and poor peripheral circulation. It may also help protect against cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration.
GREEN TEA (Camillia sinensis) The antioxidants in green tea limit the damage caused by free radicals. Green Tea is anti-ageing and protects against a wide range of degenerative conditions and cancers. The role of catechins in increasing metabolism and fat burning has seen the herb become a popular weight loss aide.
GUARANA (Paulinia cubana) This main constituent guaranine is similar to caffeine, making guarana a highly stimulant herb which can be used for an immediate boost in energy and to increase metabolism. Guarana also inhibits appetite which makes it a popular ingredient in weight loss products.
GUAR GUM (Cyamopsis tetragonolobus) This extract of the guar bean becomes gel-like when combined with water. It is used in weight loss to create a feeling of fullness, reduce cravings and stabilize blood sugar levels. It is also an excellent dietary fibre for eliminating dietary fats, cholesterol and other waste from the body. Partially Hydrolysed Guar Gum (PHGG) is completely soluble in water, is heat and acid stable and can be used in food without effecting the taste or texture.
GYMNEMA (Gymnema sylvestre) Gymnema is believed to significantly reduce sugar absorption during digestion. It is used for managing diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome X and sweet cravings.
Green Tea
HAWTHORN (Crataegus oxycantha) The use of hawthorn as a heart tonic is support by both traditional practice and modern scientific research. In Europe, hawthorn is widely used by physicians for mild angina and arrhythmias. It can also be used for mild congestive heart failure, palpitations, poor circulation and high blood pressure.
HORSE CHESTNUT (Aesculus hippocastanum) This herb is most commonly used to treat varicose veins, however, it can be useful for all conditions where poor vascular integrity is implicated such as haemorrhoids, deep vein thrombosis, oedema, leg cramps and night cramps.
KELP Kelp can be one of several brown-coloured seaweed species called Laminaria. It is one of the best natural sources of the trace mineral iodine. An iodine deficiency can be the cause of an underactive thyroid and slow metabolism.
LUTEIN Lutein is an antioxidant derived from marigold which is crucial to the health and function of the eyes, especially the part of the retina called the macular. Lutein is used to prevent and slow the progression of macular degeneration and oxidative damage to the retina and lens.
Hawthorn
MILK THISTLE (Silybum marianum) Also called St Mary’s Thistle, this plant has along history of use in European folk medicine as a liver tonic. The main constituent Silymarin has been shown to protect the liver against many types of chemical toxins including alcohol, heavy metals and pharmaceutical drugs. Clinical studies have confirmed the role of standardized milk thistle extract in treating and managing hepatitis (A,B,C), cirrhosis, fatty liver, colic, constipation and other digestive conditions. An extract of milk thistle can improve liver function, protect against further damage and enhance regeneration of damaged liver cells.
OLIVE LEAF (Olea europaea) This herb has become popular tonic to boost the immune system and protect against bacteria and viral infection. Studies support the use of olive leaves to reduce blood pressure and heart strain.
PAPAYA (Carica papaya) Papaya is a tropical fruit containing active enzymes that help improve digestive and metabolic functions. Papaya enzymes contain a high concentration of papain, a protein-digesting enzyme that quickly metabolizes the protein in foods. It is also used to manange food allergies and ulcers and spead up the healing of wounds.
Milk Thistle
POMEGRANATE (Punica granatum) This superfood is filled with nutrients and loaded with antioxidants. Research indicates that it can help lower blood pressure, reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol, prevent the cartilage damage that leads to osteoarthritis, slow progression of prostate cancer, and protect the arteries from the build up of plaque.
PYGEUM (Pygeum africanium) Clinical trials have demonstrated the benefits of this herb for prostate health, particularly in treating benign prostatic hypertrophy (prostate enlargement).
PSYLLIUM HUSK (Plantago ovata) The ground seed husks of this plant bind to water creating a jelly-like consistency and making psyllium a valuable dietary fibre. It can be used for constipation, diverticular disease and irritable bowel syndrome. An increase in dietary fibre is also recommended for people trying to manage diabetes Type II, high cholesterol and atherosclerosis. It can be used as a bulking agent for those suffering from diarrhoea.
SAW PALMETTO (Serenoa Repens) Saw palmetto is used mainly for urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate gland (also called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH). Saw palmetto is also used for other conditions, including chronic pelvic pain, bladder disorders, decreased sex drive, hair loss, and hormone imbalances. Pomegranate
SLIPPERY ELM (Ulmus ruba) This is a soothing herb which can be used before meals to relieve heartburn and peptic ulcer, or after meals to prevent reflux. It is also used to manage symptoms of ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis and constipation. Slippery elm also helps correct intestinal flora.
SPIRULINA (Athrospira plantensis) This microscopic aquatic plant is rich in proteins, carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. It is widely used by vegetarians and vegans to avoid nutrients deficiencies. People on weight loss programmes use spirulina to boost nutrient intake while limiting calories and alkalise the body.
STINGING NETTLE (Urtica dioica) The leaves of this herb are a rich source of silica and other cleansing nutrients and have traditionally been used to strengthen hair skin and nails. It is also as astringent and can tone the urinary and reproductive organs, and limit excessive menstrual flow. More recently it has been studied as a treatment for hayfever.
Stinging Nettle
ST JOHN WORT (Hypericum perforatum) A natural alternative to antidepressants for people suffering from mild depression, anxiety, apathy, irritability and emotional stress. It may also be useful for managing menopausal and premenstrual symptoms of moodiness and irritability. St John’s Wort also has anti-viral properties and is used to treat herpes simplex, shingles and hepatitis. It is also used to treat nerve pain associated with neuralgia and sciatica.
TURMERIC (Curcuma longa) This culinary herb is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It has a beneficial effect on the liver, enhancing Phase I and II detoxification. It can also be used to treat stomach disorders (helicobacter). Turmeric is also recommended for reducing the pain and swelling associated with arthritis and other joint inflammation.
VALERIAN (Valeriana officinalis) Valerian is an effective and reliable sedative and sleeping aid. It is effective in conditions of anxiety, insomnia and nervous irritability. Unlike prescription sleep medication, Valerian is not habit forming, nor does it produce a hang-over side effect.
Turmeric
VITEX (Vitex angus-castus) The fruit of the vitex have been used for menstrual disorders since Greco-Roman times. Vitex has been shown to correct and normalize menstrual cycles and reduce premenstrual symptoms. This herb may also be used for treating polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis and hormonal acne in men and women.
WILD YAM (Dioscorea villosa) Traditionally used as a muscle relaxant to treat abdominal cramps and colic, this herb is now more commonly applied to menopausal symptoms, period pain and menstrual cramping.
