diaphragm

1 Location: Toronto, Ontario Type: Temporary structures Class: M.Arch Winter Studio 2014 Collaborators: Sarah Ward Tools: Rhino, grasshopper, Photoshop, Illustrator, laser cuter, 3D scanner, physical modeling, materal testing Published: Paradigms in Computing Book Edition 2015 by EVolo Press, Building 22 Magazine Edition 14 by Carleton University. Description: diaphragm is a deployable temporary pavilion that we propose to use for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto to provide shading, cooling, and an inviting area for the public, spectators and athletes. The prototype for this inflatable tent structure combines an external pneumatic assembly hybridized with an internal folded plate structure. diaphragm is constructed of a triple-layered material system with polyethylene, corrugated plastic sheets and connectors tessellated with a diamond pattern that resembles an origamilike structure. The design is developed through research, material testing, production of material systems, physical modeling and digital fabrication. The geometry and application of the inflatable folded sheets addresses on-site constructability, and the triple-layering allows the entire structure to be fabricated from lighter and cheaper materials. Furthermore, variable pneumatic pillow patterns allow modifiable air flow and create animated and adaptable forms that can change during the course of the day, adding an element of performance.

Gilmour & Hughson Building

Location: Gatineau, Quebec Type: Adaptive-reuse Collaborators: PTAH Consultants Inc., Architects, National Capital Comission Tools: ArchiCAD, Photoshop Description: The building is a Recognized 1892 stone building used as the headquarters for the Hughson & Gilmore lumber company that operated the large lumber yards in Hull. The building offers a public washroom to the park, also is used as storage for a lot of bicycles and tires, which have damaged some parts of the interior fabric of the building. Due to heritage conservation regulations, structural issues and fire safety reasons, proposed solution is to move out the bicycles/tires out of the building. Also facilitating additional accessible washrooms on site. The project is a mobile bicycle facility that can be easily assembled and disassembled from site. The chosen scheme is the assembly of four shipping containers placed on concrete footings with a canopy and a pedestrian/bicycle pathway passing through the middle. The design is flexible to accommodate more containers in the future. The containers are sitting at the west side of the building, and face the paring on Laurier Road from one side and the park from the other side. Historic images of the Jacques-Cartier Park imprinted on the containers walls facing the park. It is a reminder of the history of the lumber empire to the passers. Last phase of the project is the proposal of various design schemes for additional accessible washrooms. The schemes are designed in an evolutionary order.

HMSC Cataraquie

3 Location: CFB Kingston, Ontario Type: Thermography survey Tools: Thermography camera, Photoshop Collaborators: PTAH Consultants Inc., Architects, National Defence Description: HMSC Cataraquie occupants note that the building can be extremely cold (at some locations) in the winter, and very hot and humid throughout much of the summer. Conditions measured on site put the ambient temperature at some locations well outside the acceptable range of an office environment. PTAH Consultants Inc., Architects (PTAH) was retained by Defence Construction Canada (DCC) to undertake a building envelope investigation of the building. The investigative work included a thermographic survey of the building and a mock-up test to confirm the nature and efficacy of proposed interventions. The work plan was intended to minimise the need for destructive investigation and disruption of the occupants. The Part 5 compliance review required limited destructive investigation and this occurred on the outside of the building. The mock-up test occurred in unoccupied classroom-office space.

Barcode 45

4 Location: Ottawa, Ontario Type: Institutional design Class: M.Arch Fall Studio 2013 Tools: ArchiCAD, Artlantis, Illustrator, Photoshop, physical modeling Collaborator: Pegah Peyman Description: Barcode 45 promotes collaboration between the faculty, students and other external programs. The design solution is based on the idea of integrating various programs into a standard module. Each module is strategically encoded with at-least three key spaces: classrooms, common space, and offices. Each module repeats, mirrors, and expands itself according to the building form and the main circulation elements. These standardized zones provide various community study rooms and open student study spaces throughout the building to allow for proximity to teaching spaces and research and faculty offices. The highly visible collaboration areas are balanced with private study spaces to support different modes of research and study. The collaboration spaces follow a controlled structural grid, and create a distinctive elevation on the street. The overall form is thoughtfully configured to optimize opportunities for natural day lighting and ventilation. A series of vertical light wells are placed throughout each floor to provide natural light and air for interior spaces.

Pilgrimage Along The Vltava

Location: Prague, Czech Republic Type: Urban design Class: B.A.S Winter Studio 2011 Tools: Physical modeling, Photoshop Published: Building 22 Magazine Edition 11 by Carleton University Description: The Vltava River leads a pilgrimage pathway along the water, allowing the journey to run parallel to the final destination. The project is to revitalize the existing floodwall structures and incorporate both walking and seating areas along Vltava River, also creating a more interactive dialogue between the water and people. The project presents itself as a sculpture that one experience in the park along the Vltava. The public spaces provide different urban moments for socializing and resting. The goal of the pavilion lies in not only its simple form, but also in how it blends within its urban context. In one location, the floodwall form acts as a cistern and holds the water within. In another place, it creates a theatre stage and the river can be watched from its underwater observation windows. The other floodwall is a small scale amphitheatre that stage the river and other consists of series of boomerang shaped pre-cast concrete forms, which are placed on the top edge of the riverside. Revitalizing the Vltava Riverside is a master plan that can be divided between various architects. The major theme for the proposed public spaces is to reference the history of a chosen site, playful performance of the water and floodwall and create different seating and walking opportunities for the public.

Beechwood Cemetery Web design Location: Ottawa, Ontario Type: Web design Tools: Adobe Muse, Illustrator, Carto DB Description: Beechwood Cemetery is Canada’s National Cemetery and was established in 1873 on 160 acres of woodland. It is a multi-faith and multicultural cemetery, and was recognized as a National Historic Site in 2002. The existing visitor’s map of Beechwood does not provide adequate information about the cemetery. Beechwood Graves is an online resource with various interactive maps to present more information to the visitors and to educate them about some of the notable people that were buried in Beechwood. The interactive maps showcase various subjects and scales of the cemetery.

The first map is a landscape plan that maps elevation contours and trees of the site.

The next interactive map locates 19 notable graves throughout the cemetery, interactively each grave on the map is linked to the biography of the burial site. Beechwood Graves also includes an interactive map of all Ottawa cemeteries and funeral homes. Lastly the website is linked to the Family Tree homepage to facilitate browsing ancestors and family history.

This is an interactive map of 22 community sections with their descriptions.

Greenhill Residential

Location: Ottawa, Ontario Type: Residential/commercial design Class: B.A.S Fall Studio 2010 Tools: ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, Photoshop Honour: Teron Scholarship Description: The Greenhill project has many social roles as it is aimed at a variety of demographics. The site is in close proximity to office buildings, shopping, restaurants, schools, two parksand a variety of amenities. Thus, it is an appropriate site for families with children, students, and seniors. Public sidewalks, bikes lanes, and public transit routes offer accessibility to and from the site. Greenhill embraces a new street and an open courtyard on the site that offers a pedestrian route connecting to adjacent streets and circulates both the public and the private residents through the site. By integrating street-oriented urbanism, the residents are highly visible to one another, leading to self-policing and an open community.
