How about the golf swing? Is that a circle or a line? The golfer wants the ball to go down the line but the real questions is, do we want to swing the golf club down the target line or in a circle? Take a second to reflect on that question. Do you want your club to go down the line to the target or does the club move more in a circle? If you have a tendency to slice the ball, this idea may be of particular interest to you. Take a travel back in time to the story of David and Goliath. David had a rock on a string that was used to kill Goliath. Now the question is, was David moving the rock on the string in a straight line or in a circle? It was a circle, and when the swinging rock went hurtling toward Goliath, the rock moved in a straight line! Said in another way, when an object comes off a circle it goes straight a tangent to that circle. When we think of a golf club and a golf ball, it is useful to see the club moving around the body in a circle. The body turns rotationally, thus setting the movement for the club in a circle. When you allow the club to move around the body without interrupting it, it will come into contact with the ball which is then propelled down the target line. The important idea is

not to stop rotating when you hit the ball but to continue your circle all the way to the finish. It should feel like you’re not aiming at the ball, the ball is just in the middle of the rotational movement of the club. The golf club actually seeks its own alignments when we simply put in motion and allowed to create its circle. Let’s look back at David and Goliath and answer another question. Is the string tight or loose? Well, when the rock is going around, the string appears to be tight, however, it is actually taut, which is quite different. The string is loose but because of the movement and weight of the rock it is pulled straight. In a golf swing, do you want your arms to be like ropes (just hanging) or tight? The arms should simply hang down from the shoulders loosely and when the rotational forces from the body turn affect them, they are pulled to visually look tight. We can all visualize a picture of a golfer at the top of their backswing with a straight left arm, but how did it come to be straight? It was loose and then pulled taut from the rotational movement of the golf swing and club. The most important circle in golf is the circle the club makes around the body and the most important line is the line the ball shoots off on when propelled from that circle! Slicers tend to try to keep the club moving down the target line after the ball is struck. Give that idea up and let the club continue on its intended circle around to the finish and you will see your ball fly long and straight. The purer your circle, the straighter the ball will fly!

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR

Play Time

BY RICH MUELLER I remember the first birdie I ever made it was the 12th hole, a par 3 at Waverly Municipal, a somewhat shoddy little par 69 layout next to Jells Park at the bottom of Wheelers Hill in Melbourne, Australia. I hit a 4 wood on the screws, landing it just short of the green and bouncing it up some 12 feet from the hole. The putt broke sharply from left to right down hill and when it went in I felt a brief moment of euphoria followed by the realization that I now had crossed some unexplainable threshold that instantly raised my expectation level for all future shots. I was ten years old and officially hooked on the game. There were no driving ranges or practice facilities in Melbourne at that time so I learned on the golf course. I suppose that's why I've always felt more comfortable playing golf instead of practicing. To that extent I learned how to use my time on the course productively, coming away with a feeling of improvement every time. Here are 4 ways that you can really improve your game by making your PLAYING time more productive and fun.

1. PLAY A ROUND WITH 3 CLUBS. Your creativity and decision making will be immediately put to the test! There's no better way to exercise your imagination than to play 3 - club.

2. TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF EVERY SHOT. Speaking of imagination, remember this verse from John Lennon: "Imagine all the people, living for today." Yep, that's right. You're going to throw expectations out the window and enjoy golf for what it is - a game - playing each shot in the moment and accepting the results, whatever they may be. This means you’re going to forget about par, the designated score value set for each hole. Who cares what the par is? It's just a number. The 9th hole at Randolph runs parallel to Alvernon Blvd. It's a 455 yard par 5. Expert golfers routinely make eagles and birdies on the hole and are usually disgusted when they make a 5 or higher. But I remember when it was a par 4 (same hole, same yardage) and bogies and double bogies were common place. Obviously the self-imposed pressures associated with the thoughts of a

BRUTALLY LONG PAR 4 were too much to overcome.

3. USE YOUR RECALL. If you have a favorite hole that you always seem to hit a good drive on, recall that hole in your mind and transpose it mentally over the view of the tee shot that is posing problems for you. Then relax and hit your favorite tee shot. Try it - it really works!

4. PLAY THE PUTTING GREEN. This simply means that 5 minutes before you tee off, use one ball only and putt around the clock. You will have lots of long putts followed by short putts. It's great preparation for your "real" round. Fourteen years after my first birdie I returned to Melbourne to play in the 1986 Australian Open. For old time’s sake I teed it up again at Waverly Municipal and this time when I played the 12th hole it was a smooth 9 iron to 12 feet. The putt broke sharply from left to right down hill and when it went in I felt a brief moment of euphoria. Some things never change!

5 Keys to High-Spin Wedge Shots THE KEYS TO HITTING WEDGE SHOTS THAT WILL STOP QUICKLY ON THE GREENS BY CORY WILKES Putting maximum spin on a wedge shot requires the right lie. Specifically, the ball must be sitting up and lying cleanly, with little to no grass behind it. The more the ball’s surface is exposed to the clubface, the more it will spin. 1) Lean Left: Plant most of your weight on your left (front) leg and lean your upper body slightly towards the target. This will encourage a steep swing, which promotes hitting the ball before the turf. Improve your chances of taking a steep swing and precise contact by opening your stance; this will also prevent excessive lateral movement and restrict back swing length. 2) Swing Upright: During the backswing keep your weight on your front leg and your upper body leaning towards the target. Restrict body motion as you swing your arms on an upright path. Above all keep your arms and the club in front of your body rather than letting them swing around to your side or behind you. 3) Check Your Impact: Freeze and check your impact position in front of a mirror. At impact the left wrist should be ahead of the ball, the shaft angled toward the target, and the right (back) knee should be pointed ahead of the ball. The proper wrist and shaft positions ensure that the clubface hits the ball first and not the turf. 4) Finish Strong: For maximum backspin, the right (trailing) arm should not rotate over the left (leading) arm through the impact. Instead rotate the entire right side through the shot to promote good acceleration and prevent “scooping” (where the club head passes the hands before impact). You want to feel as if you are compressing the ball against the clubface.

BASIC BUNKER TIPS BY ADAM BRUNGARDT AND BRADY NEEDENS

ball to be contacted first, just like a chip shot.

Arizona bunkers are notorious for being hard and having no sand in them, creating a difficult shot for even a seasoned golfer. Being able to be out of the bunker in one shot is the main goal for many golfers. Here are a few tips to getting the most out of your bunker play.

SWING:

CLUB SELECTION: In the hard desert bunkers a wedge with a small degree of bounce is needed. Bounce is designed into the golf club to allow the club to enter the sand and “bounce” out, otherwise known as splashing through the sand. The splash is virtually impossible in hard bunkers. Hard bunkers are almost impossible to hit out of with a high bounce club, therefore the recommended club is a lob wedge, gap wedge, pitching wedge or a low bounce sand wedge.

FACE ANGLE: For newcomers to the desert or beginning golfers, the face angle should be square to the target. This will allow you to practice getting consistent contact and repeatable distance. As the player advances, they can open the club face to create a higher trajectory and increase the amount of spin.

STANCE: The basic bunker shot set-up can be made by starting by aiming the clubface on the target line and putting the ball in the middle of your stance with your feet together. Then take a 6-inch step left with your left foot and a 6-inch step right with your right foot and build your stance. You want to position the golf ball about 1-2 ball widths back of center. This will allow the

The swing in a hard bunker should be like a chip shot motion. This will allow you to pick the golf ball clean out of the bunker. Using a higher lofted club like the lob wedge will allow the ball to come out of the bunker high enough to clear the lip and carry to the green. Remember: The tempo of the sand shot is more important than the hit. And more importantly gravity will take the club down to the bottom of your swing; you do not have to add any power to this shot.

PRACTICE TIP: Without any golf balls, start with two parallel lines in the sand spaced 3inches apart. Place the club on the back line and build your stance just like a normal bunker shot from that point. While stepping forward after each swing, swing trying to take the sand out from between the two lines. This will teach the mind to make contact with the sand at this point and pick the ball cleanly out of the bunker. Using these tips, you will be able to get out of the bunker in one shot and start lowering your scores and enjoying your golf game more.

The Pre-Shot Routine BY TRENT DAVIS Today’s lesson will cover the Pre-Shot Routine. Why do we need one? How do we establish one? When is a good time to use one? These are the questions I will try to answer in today’s lesson. The pre-shot routine is sometimes overlooked and probably the first thing we forget to repeat when we get frustrated. The important thing to remember when establishing a routine is to keep repeating the same thing over and over using a combination of three learning styles. The three styles include: Kinesthetic (the feel or touch style), Auditory (hearing), and Visualization. The first question on everyone’s mind is why. The purpose of having a preshot routine is consistency. The way I look at it is if you start your day off with a set routine and that routine is kept consistent, then the rest of your day should be fairly good depending upon the small obstacles we are faced with in our day to day lives. The same applies to a golf course, and the more consistent we are with our preparation, the better our round is going to be. The next question is how. We often wonder how when facing anything new in our lives and especially our golf game. This is where the three styles of learning are essential to the process. No two players are the same with this stage of the process and not everyone

Why? How? When?

will use all three styles. The important thing is to find something that is easy to repeat and works for YOU. You might take things from watching another golfer or reading something in a magazine. The point is to find something that comes like second nature and stick with it. First address the ball the same way every time. Find a target in the distance and focus on that throughout your routine. You may want to have the club in your hand gripped as though you were hitting the ball the whole time; try to feel the shot in your hands if you have trouble visualizing a shot in your mind. I like to hear the grass brush the bottom of my club head during my practice swings. The pre-shot routine should be the same for every shot except the putt. The routine for the putt will change only because the stroke is completely different from the full swing, as everyone knows. Just try to make it your own. Finally, the question of when. The simple answer is every time and every round you play. Whether you are playing for fun or in a competitive situation the preshot routine should never be put aside. The reason for this is repetitive action usually results in the same outcome. You start your day the same and hope it ends the same. You start your golf game off on the right foot and hope you finish the day exactly the same

way you started. There you have it. Easier said than done, right? Most things are, but if you put in the time and practice a PreShot Routine is not that hard to incorporate into your game. The key thing to remember is after you have a set routine, try not to stray from it. Remember the routine like the back of your hand. We covered the why, how and when and now the question is will you have the discipline and patience to make it work for you.

The Basic

CHIP SHOT BY BRANDON BROSCHINSKY Chipping should be used when off the green and are not able to putt. With its simple swing and small choice of club selection the chip shot has a very high success rating. It should be used from the edge of the green to 15 ft away.

Clubs: Next comes the clubs, the club choice depends on the placement of the pin. A 9 iron should be used for a pin in the front of the green, 8 iron for a middle pin, and a 7 iron for a back pin.

you kept the end of the club facing the belly button the hands should now be ahead of the ball which allows for a more crisp contact when hitting the shot.

Swing: Your swing is going to be mainly with the upper body and bigger muscles while trying not to hinge the wrists very much. The arms should move “pocket to pocket”. On the backswing, go back till your hands get to your right hip and on your follow through go to your left hip. This constant motion will make it easier manage distance control. Control the distance with club choice rather then length of swing.

Grip: When getting ready to hit a chip shot the pressure that is applied is very important. So take a normal grip but just loosen up the grip pressure allowing you to feel a better rhythm as you hit the shot.

Tempo: When thinking tempo, try and keep the backswing and downswing on the same tempo. Think of a clock… Tic…..Toc …… the clocks speed never changes, neither should the tempo of your chip.

Stance: When taking the stance start with the feet together and the ball in the middle. Keep the end of the club pointing towards the belly button and take one step with the left foot towards the target applying 70% of the body weight to the left foot. If

The best part of the chip shot is whether you are a 1 handicap or a 30 the methods are all the same. The more basic you can make it the more quickly you can perfect it. Try this method and you will be getting it up and down in no time.

Brandon Broschinsky is a student at The Golf Academy of America-Phoenix Campus. He has a two handicap and his goal is to play golf professionally and then to become a Head Professional of a golf course, teaching lessons and meeting new people everyday.

Cu ng down a set for

JUNIOR

Let’s say your little crumb-cruncher is getting old enough to be interested in golf. You have visions of some great father/mother-son or father/motherdaughter golf matches in your future. And, come-on, let’s be honest. The thought of seeing the apple of your eye putting for the lead in a PGA or LPGA major has crossed your mind at least once. You want to encourage that interest; so you decided to cut down one of your old sets of clubs. There. Now he or she has a nice set to get started with—just like the cut down set you got from your dad. Right? Wrong! Let me put it this way. If you want to make dead certain that your little Tiger or Annika will develop a totally lame swing, all you have to do is cut down a set of adult clubs and give them to him or her. They will be too heavy, too stiff, the wrong loft, the wrong lie, and probably the wrong length. Other than that, they will be just what the kid needs to develop as a golfer. Should you perhaps cut down a club or two just to find out if he or she would enjoy taking a few cuts at a golf ball?

BY TOM GRUNDNER

Sure that makes sense, although you might first try to hunt for a single junior club for $5 to $10 at a used sports equipment store. But, when you hear him ask for another bucket, or hear her complain about leaving the driving range too soon, it's time to get some proper junior clubs.

come even close to the prices you would pay for the pre-made premium branded junior sets found in retail golf shops. I’ve found that most custom clubmakers have a real soft spot for kids who are really getting interested in the game.

Since 2000, there are a couple of companies who have made a real niche for themselves by offering good quality pre-made junior sets. The lofts are friendly, shafts are more flexible, weights are a little lighter and grips are smaller. They offer the sets in pre-made categories of "age 5-8" and "age 9-12" with the substantial difference being their lengths, judged on the basis of average heights for kids in these two age groups.

Try to resist the temptation to buy clubs that are too long with the expectation that he or she will "grow into them." He might well do that, but if they’re too long, you’re forcing him to hit with something that could cause him to learn a bad swing, and you know how hard it is to UN-learn that swing later on.

The only drawbacks to the pre-made junior sets might be their price and the possibility that your son or daughter happens to be outside the "national average" for height for his or her age, from which the standard lengths of these sets are created. Thus, we come back to your local professional clubmaker who can custom build him, her (or you) a set. And don't panic about that "custom built" part. It's been my experience that the vast majority of clubmakers do not charge prices for their junior clubs that

One last point...

If that means you need to get him or her a new set every year or two, get over it. As long as your kid or grandkid is really into the game, it's a better deal than those tap-dancing lessons you sprang for, not to mention the $200 thin profile/camera/text messaging cell phone he or she just had to have (this month anyway). You're giving the kid a gift that will literally keep giving for the rest of his or her life, long after you're gone. That's no small thing. Besides, it's a small price to pay to watch your son walk up the 18th fairway at Augusta with a 12-stroke lead, or your daughter take that dive into the pond at the Dinah Shore, right?

HORSESHOE BAY RESORT THE REALLY BIG SHOW IN TEXAS

Y

ou’ve heard the expression, “Everything’s Bigger in Texas”; well, that certainly holds true in speaking of Horseshoe Bay Resort. But in addition to the word “big” you’d have to toss in such superlatives as fabulous, spectacular, all-fulfilling, incredible, unbelievable and the like if you attempt to describe this resort in a paragraph or two. Situated on 7,000 acres – can you even imagine how big 7,000 acres is? - in the heart of Texas, just 45 minutes west of Austin, the renowned Horseshoe Bay Resort is located in the center of the Texas Golden Triangle, where two-thirds of the state's wealth and population reside. The resort lies along the panoramic shore of beautiful Lake LBJ in the midst of the scenic Texas Hill Country. Founded in 1971, Horseshoe Bay Resort is Texas’ original lakeside

resort. With three championship Robert Trent Jones, Sr. golf courses in addition to a highly anticipated Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, Summit Rock, currently under development – Horseshoe Bay has been hailed as one of America’s Best Golf Resorts by Golf Magazine. The three championship Robert Trent Jones, Sr. golf courses (Slick Rock, Ram Rock and Apple Rock) are among his finest works of art. The courses have all been featured in the “50 Best Courses in Texas” list in the Dallas Morning News every year since the origin of the annual ranking in 1989. Over the years the resort has played host to many noted golf groups and organizations. The Senior Division of the International Players Tour, Senior Golf Association of America, the Senior Division of the Texas Golf Association and the Western Seniors Golf Association are among the

notable organizations that have teed it up at Horseshoe Bay. Horseshoe Bay Resort also offers a made-to-scale, 18-hole, par 72 Bermuda grass putting course, four swimming pools, a spa and fitness facility, a full-service marina, seven dining facilities, 16 adult tennis courts, and three USTA-sponsored kids’ tennis courts. Accommodations include hotel rooms and suites (385 bedrooms) within the Horseshoe Bay Resort Marriott Hotel. Located adjacent to the hotel are one, two and three-bedroom options at the Paseo villas. These accommodations are designed with a separate living area, wet bar and the two- and threebedroom condos offer a full kitchen. The resort also features a jet center with a 6,000-foot lighted runway and private charter jet service via Air Horseshoe.

Horseshoe Bay Resort offers a seemingly unending variety of fine dining and entertainment options. The Yacht Club is a superb setting for sophisticated lakeside dining. Adjacent is the Yacht Club Grill for casual indoor and outdoor lakeside dining, serving lunch and dinner seasonally for those arriving by land or water. The Lantana Grill & Bar is located within the Marriott Hotel where Executive Chef Robbin Murphy creates “trans pecos” cuisine, an eclectic blend of old world and southwestern flavors. My favorite, the Cap Rock Bar and Grill, overlooks the 18th green of Apple Rock golf course and the sprawling LBJ Lake. The views are delightful and the dining fare superb.

All things considered, the major attraction at Horseshoe Bay Resort has to be the marina, home to a fine fleet of luxury boats and personal watercraft rentals. Bringing guests all the latest in water sports rental equipment, including pontoon boats, ski boats with drivers, WaveRunners®, kayaks and fishing boats, the marina provides all the necessary equipment, as well as professional guides. Additional services available at the marina include wakeboards, fuel services, slip rentals and leases and boat launch access. All watercraft rentals include gas, oil and life preservers. Guests are also invited to participate in full or half day guided fishing on Lake LBJ and nightly sunset cruises. In addition to boating the resort also features four swimming pools and a white sand beach located directly behind the Yacht Club on the shores of Lake LBJ.

TOP THREE INVESTMENT MISTAKES

AND HOW TO AVOID THEM BY MICHAEL TREIBERG Are you less confident in your ability to manage your portfolio today than you were a year ago? If your answer is "yes," you are not alone. Even the most seasoned financial professionals are finding the current market difficult to navigate. But confidence in investment skills should not be based on the market's recent twists and turns. Instead, it should stem from an understanding of investment fundamentals and the common mistakes that individual investors tend to make.

Mistake #1: Not Managing Expectations A big part of succeeding as an investor is having the right expectations about what you can achieve by putting your money into stocks, bonds and cash. There is nothing wrong with hoping for the best from your investments. After all, it's human nature. However you could end up far short of your goal if you harbor unrealistic return assumptions. Instead of dreaming of

success, use historical investment returns to help keep your expectations rooted in reality. For instance, over the 30-year period ending December 31, 2008, U.S. stocks averaged total returns of 11.00%; long-term U.S. government bonds averaged 10.14%, and cash averaged 5.99%.* Keep these long-term averages in mind -- along with your time frame and attitude about risk -- when deciding how to invest your money.

Mistake #2: Chasing Hot Stocks and Overtrading The problem with pursuing popular or top-performing stocks is that by the time you hear about them, they may have already reached their performance peak. Chasing past winners is closely correlated to another potential investment mistake -overtrading. Shuffling your investments too often may increase the chance that you'll buy high and sell low. One potential solution: Work closely with a qualified financial professional, who can help you avoid the urge to trade frequently.

Mistake #3: "Setting and Forgetting" Your Investment Mix When was the last time you checked your portfolio's asset allocation? You might be surprised to find that strong – or weak- returns in one area have caused a shift in your portfolio that could affect your ability to reach goals or manage risk. Review your account at least once or twice a year to make sure that it remains in line with your investment goals. If not, you may need to rebalance. While investment mistakes do happen, you can try to minimize their impact. Learn from the missteps of others and consult with a qualified financial professional to start improving your investment strategy today.
