INSTRUCTION

Playing the Scales

BY SUSIE MEYERS Many golfers take lessons to fix what they believe is broken in their strokes. Perhaps it would be more beneficial if they would realize that taking golf lessons is very much like playing a musical instrument. Piano players take lessons to develop their skills. When individuals begin playing the piano, often “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is the first song they learn. They get good at playing that song, and may even be able to play it on different keys on the piano and at different paces. After awhile, they may get bored with “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and want more. Many golfers are stuck at “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and even though they are frustrated that they are not getting better, they still ask “When am I going to get to the interesting stuff?” When we play golf it can be like putting on a concert, yet we are not fully equipped to perform. We then have a frustrated golfer playing at a level much lower than desired, asking, “Why am I not any better especially since I’ve been playing for a long time?” It may help to see golf instruction as a process of development, and not as trying to fix what golfers see as broken. We do not learn to walk properly until we go through the development stages of crawling. You learn to play musical scales before you learn a song. Why do musicians learn their scales, practice

their scales and become talented at their scales? They never play the scales in a song! However, it is invaluable to be a flexible musician and able to play many different scales and in different ways! Golfers who are not happy with their game should not see themselves as broken, maybe just underdeveloped! Golf is a motor skill that takes time to develop rhythmical and coordinated skills. It is much more beneficial to learn to be creative and flexible with your golf clubs (tools), than trying to be consistent. By learning different ways to use golf clubs, golfers will be able to make adjustments for the different shots they desire to play. When playing golf, no two shots that are ever the same! Having the flexibility to take a little off a shot, or add a little, or hit a fade, or a draw, is the goal. You can learn to do this by learning to do many different things with your golf clubs (playing your golf scales) during practice sessions and lessons. To play a concerto, you need to be flexible, knowing more than one scale. Like wise to play golf at a higher level you need more tools in your toolbox, not just one shot!! Develop your golf by practicing your golf scales (with a flexible golf swing), so you can be a flexible golfer and play at a higher level!!

I

recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with The Golf Club at Vistoso’s Assistant Golf Pro, Matt Smallwood. Matt and I discussed steps to get a beginning junior golfer plugged in. Matt suggests stopping by your local golf course to meet with one of the golf professionals before signing your child up for lessons. Just like all other sports, equipment must fit the player to maximize his or her performance. If the course you’ve visited doesn’t offer programs for children, the pro should be able to help you find some courses where your child can begin to learn the sport. Remember, the golf professionals are there to help you. Just like with any sport it’s important to take age into consideration. “I’d say 5 or 6 years old is a good age to get started,” says Matt. “Although, if your child is younger than that and has expressed an interest you should get them involved. It’s so amazing how quickly a child can learn golf. Teaching them good habits at a young age is really important to their future game.” Most children are already experienced in playing team sports. Whether it’s a quick ball game during recess or signing up for the fall season of football, there will be other children pumped to play and perhaps not enough space for your child to get adequate play time. Golf offers some benefits that most other sports can’t. Since it is an individual sport, your child is competing against him/herself rather than another child. “It’s teaching a child to believe in oneself and to control emotions on the golf course that help contribute to their success or failures in golf,” says Matt. “The first thing a child should learn is to enjoy the game. Having fun is so vital for a child, especially at such a young age. Sure, etiquette is a close second, but you want your child to have fun in

what they are doing. Otherwise they might lose interest.”

As a parent there is only so much you can do to keep your child motivated, and if you are excited about it chances BY TARA are your child will be as well. But KELLY knowing what to look for and making sure you’ve picked the right course for your child is really important. “I’ve been in the golf business for eight years now. Before coming to the Golf Club at Vistoso I was involved in junior golf programs.” Matt says it’s important to ask a potential instructor simple questions such as: how long have they been teaching golf? How much involvement do they have with junior golf? “Also, pay attention to “It’s teaching the instructor’s a child to believe personality”, in oneself and to says Matt. “You control emotions want someone on the golf that is outgoing and excited to be course...” teaching your child. You have to be passionate about something in order to teach it with excellence. This should help in keeping your child motivated in learning golf.” An enthusiastic instructor who has a love for the game could get your child hooked on golf for life. It’s that enthusiastic instructor and loving push of encouragement from a parent that helps keep a child motivated and striving to excel. How much practice is involved? That’s your call. You get out of it what you put into it. If you have enrolled your child in a few lessons a week why not take an off day to hit some balls on the driving range with your beginning golfer. Seeing mom or dad having fun on the course too is just as fun. The Golf Club at Vistoso is located in Oro Valley, Arizona and frequently offers programs just for kids. Visit www.vistosogolf.com, call 520-7977900 or stop by and ask for Matt, he’d be happy to help you.

Joint Venture scores Hole-in-One

Southern Arizona Tee Times Magazine has been named the Official Publication of the Southwest Section Southern Chapter PGA

“This will be of great benefit to Southern Arizona golf,” states Rick Price, Operations Coordinator for the SWSSCPGA. “With The PGA of America, the leader in the golf industry, now facilitating newsworthy information to be distributed at the local level, we will benefit from a truly local magazine, reporting and representing Southern Arizona Golf”.

aunching in an entirely new format this December, readers of Southern Arizona Tee Times will soon enjoy more relevant local golf news along with SWSSCPGA coverage, instruction, and other special sections from local experts within the industry. “This will be of great benefit to Southern Arizona golf,” states Rick Price, Operations Coordinator for the SWSSCPGA. “With The PGA of America, the leader in the golf industry, now facilitating newsworthy information to be distributed at the local level, we will benefit from a truly local magazine, reporting and representing Southern Arizona Golf ”.

Although it’s the Southern Chapter of the SWSPGA facilitating this venture with Southern Arizona Tee Times, the structure of the new arrangement is designed to enhance, educate, and promote Southern Arizona Golf in its entirety. “Even if you are not a member of the SWSSCPGA” Mike Hayes, President of the Southern Chapter of the Southwest Section PGA states, “If you have a valuable contribution to Southern Arizona Golf and would like to participate, we’d like to hear from you”. In addition to a Board of Directors with members from each organization, this unique new partnership also includes an Advisory Board that represents a diverse and well rounded section of individuals involved in every aspect of Southern Arizona Golf. “We are still in the process of finalizing the Advisory Board” shares Jacqueline McAbee, Publisher of Tee Times, “But it’s been very exciting to watch a Board of all volunteers form with such a unique collaboration of individuals involved in the game of golf, and with such excitement about what this change will mean to the local industry.” “We thought it important to bring Jack Rickard back”, shared Wade Dunagan, Executive Director of the World Golf Championships Accenture Match Play and one of the first SATT Advisory Board members who joined in early September.

SATT Advisory Board

Jack Rickard, who wrote for the Tucson

Citizen for 33 years and left in 2005, had also worked with the original Publisher of Southern Arizona Tee Times until it changed ownership last year. “When Jack was at the Citizen” Hayes mentioned, “His column was where everyone went for golf news. Many of us looked forward to reading it every Wednesday. You could always learn about who won what, or scored a hole-in-one, or moved to a new position or course … so it was important for the SWSSCPGA to bring Jack onto the Advisory Board to assist us in heading in the right direction from a journalistic standpoint.” Although the Advisory Board is still forming, additional members include Judy McDermott, Executive Director of the Tucson Conquistadores Foundation and Robin Lane from the Arizona Women’s Golf Association (AWGA) Board of Directors. The basic mission of this new venture is twofold; to not only highlight those people and events that are already well known within the golf community, but also to promote the game to non-golfers as well. “Tucson and its surrounding areas needed a publication specific to this marketplace that is willing to work with the industry as a whole to promote local golf. This new format will be unlike any other local golf magazine. The management of Southern Arizona Tee Times has worked closely with the Southern Chapter to create some unique marketing programs that create a win-win situation for both the participants, as well as the readers of Southern Arizona Tee Times”. This new format has proven to be a somewhat challenging process, Ms. McAbee admits. “We had to look at what would be of benefit to our readers, and achieve it. Our goal is to provide a well rounded and relevant publication, which will benefit the entire golf community for years to come”. In addition to changing the structure of the existing publication, Southern Arizona Tee Times plans to expand its distribution to include more of Southern Arizona by distributing to courses and like-minded businesses in Cochise County. There are also plans of making the magazine available to the CONTINUED ON PG. 10

general public through all Fry’s and Albertson’s as well as various additional points of interest in Tucson. “Although our focus is to promote Southern Arizona Golf to local residents,” Mike Hayes shares “we know that Southern Arizona is a popular market for winter visitors who enjoy our desert courses.” For this reason, the magazine will also be available through online subscription, and accessible on numerous websites including facebook, twitter, and Issuu, a National Online bookshelf. “We have the full support of the SWSPGA in this venture”, states Price. The SWSPGA consists of a group of professionals dedicated to making golf a better game. The SWSPGA includes nearly 1,400 PGA members and apprentices involved in the operations of more than 350 golf facilities. The Section is the local delivery system for the PGA of America programs and activities to promote the game of golf in this region and to enhance the skills of its members.” Since Southern Arizona Tee Times is about golf and is published for its readers, the editorial staff would also like to hear from them. driver ever to exceed the record balls speed records set by our El Diablo Driver. Sure you might say we are biased by doing our own tes ng. Not true, all our data is immediately exposed to all the World Class Long Drivers doing the tes ng. What we do is expose the truth of some very expensive drivers that fall very, very short of the Krank Standard. • Spin Rate - Spin is a very difficult element to test, because the sha and the person swinging the driver have so much to do with spin rate. Our main tes ng is with House of Forged, LT and Ultra sha s, the best sha s in Long Drive. As well as, our Fujikura Diesel and Diesel Tour sha s, the best sha s in Golf. Our results across the board are slightly lower spin rate than the El Diablo which has a very low spin profile to start with. We know the importance of spin. The Rage driver is developed to reduce spin and it does.

Krank Golf Launches The Next Generation Of Dominance RAGE DRIVER - Anger Management For Golfers When Krank Golf releases a new driver, it is big news in World of Long Drive Golf. A er winning the Remax World Long Drive Championships for the past 2 years in a row (Grand Champion Division) with their El Diablo Driver, Krank Golf has a tall order to fill to out perform their #1 Driver in the Sport of Long Drive Golf. “In Long Drive, there really isn’t anywhere to hide. You either have an amazing driver or you don’t. When true Driver performance is the only thing that ma ers, the inferior products are exposed in just a few swings. The new Krank Golf Rage Driver was built using the experience we gained from developing our #1 ranked El Diablo Driver and the 2 years of knowledge we gained by using it. Nothing is more valuable to us than observing and tes ng our amazing drivers using the Top Long Drivers of the world.” Says Lance Reader, President of Krank Golf The Krank Golf Rage Driver conforms to USGA and R&A standards and is now the premier driver in the Sport of Long Drive. Krank Golf realizes that Golf and Long Driver are not one in the same. What is the same is that every golfer needs more accuracy and more distance off the tee box. Krank Golf specializes in one thing, Driver Performance. Krank Golf does not manufacture irons, nor has any plans to. Pure, absolute and uncompromising commitment to improving the most difficult golf club in your bag to hit, “The Driver” is what makes Krank Golf Drivers the best in the world. “For us to reach our goal of becoming the #1 Golf Driver Company in the world, we have to con nue to produce drivers that exceed the performance of all the major manufacturers. Because of our commitment to the Sport of Long Drive, we must manufacturer drivers that hold up the highest scru ny of any drivers in the world. Ball Speed, Spin Rate and Durability is the holy grail of the perfect driver. The New Krank Golf Rage Driver has all three elements. • Ball Speed - This is the easiest element to test. When tes ng a Driver head, it either has great ball speed or it doesn’t. We have extensive tes ng results on numerous driver heads at different swing speeds. The Rage Driver is at the top of the list without ques on. Our new Rage Driver is the only

• Durability - For those who are concerned about durability. Let me make it very clear. To create a driver that holds up to 140+ MPH swing speeds is a very, very difficult thing to do. The average golfer swings around 90 to 95 MPH. The Rage driver holds up to swing speeds in excess of 150 MPH. I think we have covered everyone else.

The Krank Golf Rage Driver is everything we hoped it would be. We believe golf starts from the Tee Box. Why not play from more fairways and closer to the greens. It makes pu ng for dough a lot more likely.”

Shaping a

Magic Putter O

ne of the most critical elements in having a putter that will work well for you is getting the head weight right. A putter head that is too light will tend to make your stroke “wristy,” and you’ll lose accuracy. Get one that is too heavy, and you lose the touch you need for distance control. So what’s a body to do? How do you find the magic head weight that makes your putter feel just right. A golf club is like a teeter-totter. Any competent clubmaker can make any club feel like a 16 lb hammer, or light as a feather, just by varying the weight at either end. But it’s not rocket science. You can find that heavenly-perfect feel on your own, and here are some ways to do it. If your putter head feels too light, start taping quarters to it with masking tape. Putt with it and keep adding quarters until the head feels right. Then take the club and the quarters to a clubmaker and say: I'd like this amount of weight added to

BY TOM GRUNDNER

the head. This can be done as simply as adding some lead tape to the bottom, or it might involve taking the shaft off and placing a lead weight in the shaft tip, or possibly adding lead powder down the shaft.

heavy? Cut off another half-inch, or even an inch, and test it again. When you get it so that it feels just right, have someone put a new grip on (of the same weight), and you're good to go.

If your putter head feels too heavy, you can cut down the length of your putter shaft. I know that sounds extreme, but it’s not. How did you choose that length, anyway? Was it a store bought, one size fits all, or were you measured? If you were measured, was it explained that that measurement was only a guideline—a starting point—to get the correct length?

Don't worry about the final length of the shaft. I am 6'4" and my putter is about two inches under what the "charts" say it should be. If anything, that shortness has proven to be an advantage as it forces me to get in closer to the ball and bend over more so my arms truly hang straight down. That alone has helped my putting immeasurably.

So, here's what you can do, either on your own or have it done at a club shop. Cut off your current grip with a box cutter (get a blade with a hooked tip, $1 - $2 for a package), and save the grip. Now, cut off about a half-inch to an inch from the butt end of the shaft. If you have a steel shaft on your putter (and you should) you can buy a small tube cutter at a hardware store for $4 or $5. Slip the cut-off grip back on, and try putting with it. Still too

But perhaps you are happy with the original length of your putter and don’t want to change it. That’s fine too. If the head is too heavy, just take the putter to a competent clubmaker who can place some extra weight into the butt and of your club. As I said in the opening, the golf club is like a teeter-totter. It can be adjusted any way you want, but do make that adjustment. When it comes to putting especially, you won’t believe the difference it will make.

P

laying golf is only one of many things that golf cars do. In fact, many golf car owners don't play golf at all. Their electric vehicles are their primary means of transportation in and around their community, taking them to the club, dining, pool and exercise center. Why? Because they are fun to use and drive, a way to enhance leisure time and add reasonably-priced luxury to your life, and....because you deserve it. Golf cars can be built to meet individual needs, and have any look that consumers desire. Want super comfortable upholstered seats that jazz up your car and protect your legs from burning vinyl? How about a driving enclosure that easily wraps and unwraps the car for you when the weather isn't perfect? Dazzled by high performance wheels and lots of creature comforts and locking compartments? These needs can be accomodated for you! The most popular cars today are neighborhood electric vehicles, or NEVs. While you can use them for golf, their primary purpose is to drive you around your community; NEVs can reach speeds of 25 mph. Congress has "blessed" these cars with a tax credit that's over $4000. You can use it to offset your Federal tax liability and effectively cut the cost of your new car by half or more. Most golf cars and NEVs are environmentally friendly and easy on your wallet when it comes to maintenance. Unlike most autos, they don't waste gas (there is none) or create carbon pollutants every time you

start out. There are even solar tops available to make them truly green machines (even though they may be red, blue, white or champagne). Incidentally, the solar tops come with big tax credits too, and will extend battery life and cut electricity costs. There are Club Cars that are NEV’s and also a brand called EVE (short for Electric Vehicle Engineering). Both cars qualify for the tax credit and are rapidly finding their way into customers' garages and onto Southern Arizona streets and courses. With the tax credit, new NEVS such as EVE can cost as little as $2560! If you’re watching your budget, but have something specific in mind, you can also consider used golf cars. At Golf Cars of Arizona there are used cars with prices ranging from $25005000 (including many creampuffs that have been traded in for the tax-credit NEVs). Golf Cars of Arizona also stocks factory rebuilt Club Cars that start at $5500. So, there’s something for everyone's pocketbook! What to look for? If you're buying new and have the tax liability to offset, why not go for the NEV. If not, look for a new golf car that has a good pedigree. Club Cars are Rated #1 in every category golf cars are rated. Prefer used? Again, pedigree is key. Where did the car come from? How does it steer and brake? Are there any odd noises? And does it have the look and comfort level you want? If you are looking for more information on how to purchase a golf car, contact Linda Hoffman at Golf Cars of Arizona & Utility Vehicles of Tucson. You can also visit www.GolfCarsofArizona.com where you can get lots more buying tips.

Q.

At a par-3 hole, a player, believing his original ball may be lost, plays a provisional ball. He searches five minutes for the original ball and then plays the provisional ball onto the green. At that point, the original ball is found in the hole. What is the ruling?

A.

The player's score is 1. The play of the hole was completed when the player holed the original ball (Rule 1-1).

Q.

A player played to a blind green and putted what he thought was his ball. He then discovered that his own ball was in the hole and that the ball he had putted was a wrong ball. What is the ruling?

A.

Since the play of the hole was completed when the original ball was holed (Rule 1-1), the player was not in breach of Rule 15-3 for subsequently playing a wrong ball. (Revised)

Q.

Should the standard for determining whether a serious breach of Rule 1-2 has occurred be the same in match play and stroke play?

A.

In deciding whether a player has committed a serious breach of Rule 1-2, the Committee should consider all aspects of the incident. Given the different impact on players in match play and stroke play, it is possible for the same act to constitute a serious breach of Rule 1-2 in stroke play but not in match play. In many cases in match play (e.g., a player who intentionally stops his ball from entering a water hazard), a penalty of loss of hole is sufficient while in stroke play the player should be disqualified for a serious breach. In some cases (e.g., the purposeful act referred to in the first paragraph of the answer in Decision 17-3/2), a penalty of disqualification in match play is appropriate. (New) An opponent or a fellow-competitor purposely steps on the player's line of putt with the intention either of improving the line (e.g., by pressing down a raised tuft of grass) or of damaging it (e.g., by making spike marks). What is the ruling?

A.

In either case, the opponent or the fellow-competitor was in breach of Rule 1-2. The penalty is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play, unless the Committee decides to impose a penalty of disqualification — see the penalty statement under Rule 1-2. In stroke play if the line of putt has been damaged, the player, in equity (Rule 1-4), may restore the line of putt to its previous condition. A player is entitled to the lie and line of putt he had when his ball came to rest. The line of putt may be restored by anyone. (Revised)

Ping Southwest Sec on Championship

Vomacka Defends Title and Claims 1st Position in PGA Tournaments In late August, Dean Vomacka from The Stone Canyon Club successfully defended his title in the Southern Chapter PGA Championship held at The Golf Club @ Vistoso. In true Championship style Dean eagles the final hole of the 54 hole Championship to edge out Brandon Smith from Ventana Canyon. Deans 54 hole total of 207 9- under par, posted rounds of 70-68-69 to take home the title and the $2,500 first place check. The Golf Club @ Vistoso hosted the Southern Chapter PGA Championship, and was also a primary sponsor of the 2009 annual event. Congratulations to all the professionals who had an opportunity to participate in this year's Championship. Also, defending the Southwest Section PGA Ping Championship, the 54-hole individual stroke play championship conducted at the par 72 Mesa Country Club on September 15-17. Dean had opening rounds of 66 -65 to take a 6 stroke lead into the final round. Despite hitting in the water on the difficult par 3 8th hole and making a double bogey, Dean kept it on cruise control and finished with a 72, four strokes better than Don Yrene and Benoit Beisser. Chris Dompier tied Mike Malaska, Tony Rohlik and Ralph West for fourth at 209. Vomacka, earned $7,000 for his win and shot a 13-under par 203.

Miller’s Miracle by John Nemo gives PGA Championship something to think about It might be a golf novel, but Miller’s Miracle by John Nemo poses a proposition any weekend duffer would die for – a chance to earn a spot in the PGA Championship. Haunted by the loss of his father, David Miller steps onto a golf course in the middle of Iowa unaware his life is about to change forever. Because what happens on that sleepy Midwestern course is the unveiling of a God-given ability to hit a golf ball that few athletes have ever possessed. And as he begins falling in love with the game that at one time had separated him from his father, something far more important begins stirring deep inside Miller’s soul. At the same time, a CBS television executive desperate to boost his network’s sagging golf ratings creates something every weekend hacker dreams of – a national amateur tournament open to anyone willing to wield a club. And its grand prize – a spot in the upcoming PGA Championship at Hazeltine National alongside the game’s greats – brings everyone from NCAA college golf champions to parish priests spilling onto courses across the United States. David Miller joins them, buoyed by the one man – his new caddie and mentor, Roy Reardon – who believes in his breathtaking-but-unpolished talent. And before his final putt finds its way into the cup, David Miller will encounter an opportunity to change his life – and thousands more – forever. Written by veteran sportswriter and author John Nemo, Miller’s Miracle highlights several of Minnesota’s most well-known golf courses, including Hazeltine National, site of the 2009 PGA Championship. Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones GOLF TRAIL

GORGEOUS GOLF COURSES, GREAT ACCOMMODATIONS & GRACEFUL SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY BY TOM DRAPER

I

t has been written that Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail has provided an opportunity for the rest of the country to see and experience the “old” South with “new” eyes. Nothing could be truer; it is an incredible experience. Funded by the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail was constructed to help expand tourism, recruit business and industry and attract retirees to the area. It is accomplishing its mission. The Trail is the largest golf course construction project in U.S. history. Initial construction, which began in the late 1980’s, was for 324 holes. Since then, more than 100 miles of courses have been constructed. Today the Trail consists of a total of 468 holes in 11 locations across Alabama. The Trail stretches from the rolling hills of northern and central parts of

the state, to the wetlands and woods near the Gulf Coast. Each of the eleven stops on the Trail is within a two-hour drive of the closest Trail course and each is within 15 minutes of a major interstate. The Trail’s artfully designed and beautifully landscaped courses are some of the finest public golf in the country as well as some of the best bargains. My exposure to the Trail was launched in the heart of Mobile at the legendary Battle House, a classic renaissance hotel and spa, which following a $50 million renovation restored this palace to its original grandeur. Today it is proudly proclaimed one of the top 500 hotels in the world. Magnolia Grove, the Southern most site on Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, sits just outside Mobile and

features two championship layouts and a sporty short course simply titled The Short Course. The main track at Magnolia Grove is the Falls Course. Characterized by large, liberally contoured greens and massive, cloverleaf bunkers, the Falls weaves its way through a magnificently landscaped terrain. The signature 10th hole, a 570 par five – possibly the best strategic hole on the course – features a waterfall cascade across stair steps just beneath a contoured green that falls eight feet from back to front. A magnificent sight, a superb challenge. The courses are all beautifully maintained and feature magnificent vistas. Just on the other side of Mobile Bay is the quaint community of Point Clear and the glorious Grand Hotel Marriott Resort situated amidst giant oaks

dripping in Spanish moss standing guard on the banks of Mobile Bay. Since 1847 The Grand has maintained a gracious tradition of Southern hospitality. The hotel consistently receives the AAA Four Diamond Award. The Grand’s 550 acres features multiple beaches and lush landscaping as well as eight tennis courts, a croquet lawn, horseshoes, bikes, kayaks, sailboats and other watercraft for guests’ enjoyment. While The Grand offers a fine and varied restaurant selection, the star attraction is the Grand’s outstanding Sunday Brunch, a favorite of locals and guests alike.

Dogwood Number 11

Two of Robert Trent Jones eleven Trail courses are located directly across the street from the Grand, the venerable Dogwood and Azalea courses – a striking showcase for great golf in the South. The courses are lined with 200-yearold oaks and the dramatic 14th hole on Azalea presents an island green surrounded by a four-acre lake which makes the approach to this par five a testing and sometimes nerve-racking experience. Both courses, recently redesigned including the addition or expansion of ten water features over the 36 holes, as well as other architectural features are in superb condition providing challenging and enjoyable play year ‘round.

Each course is equally challenging and interesting and while Dogwood may seem a bit easier, both courses can be played to your liking since each offers five sets of tees for you to choose from. Without question, Alabama has become a golfer’s paradise. For reservations or more information, phone 888/333-6082 or visit www.rtjgolf.com.

OLD PUEBLO GRILLE: Enjoy the flavor, enjoy the charm

Located in the heart of Tucson, Old Pueblo Grille features the richness of both Southwest and American flavors. Fountains and illuminated foliage create the ultimate dining setting in this historic building. Originally built in 1928, these beautiful grounds were once the site of a small two-room farmhouse. The original restoration, circa 1938, was a fanciful transformation including three towers, several patios, ponds and a wishing well. Reportedly, before heading overseas in World War II, 80 servicemen from Davis-Monthan AFB wished at that well for survival and every man returned safely. Peacocks graced the lawns,

preening in the large windows calling throughout the day and sleeping on the tiled roof by night to escape the coyotes. After nearly three quarters of a century, the integrity of the original property remains. In 2000 the property was purchased and Old Pueblo Grille was born, bringing a new elegance and style to southwestern dining. The chefs have created a regionally focused menu that includes Rattlesnake Eggs (halved jalapenos stuffed with smoked shrimp cream cheese and wrapped in bacon), Fresh Guacamole, Carne Asada and Green Chile Pot Roast. The highlight of the menu has to be the combination plate, of which guests can choose one, two or three items to accompany charro beans, red rice and jicama slaw. The list of over twelve items boasts Slow Roasted Beef Machaca and San Carlos Fish Tacos, to name a few. Pair these with Old Pueblo Grille’s lineup of Arizona brewed beers or a

Portfolio Repair Strategy BY MICHAEL TREIBERG In the current bear market, many investors have learned a compelling lesson: It's impossible to control events in the financial markets, but we can control how we react to them. In that spirit, it may be time to focus on portfolio repair strategies that may help you pursue longer-term financial goals.

Reassess Your Risk Tolerance Your reaction to single-digit declines in the value of your portfolio may provide a clue as to your feelings about risk. If relatively small drops leave you feeling anxious, consider this reaction when making decisions about how to invest. Stocks historically have experienced short-term ups and downs, and this volatility is likely to affect your investments if you own stock or stock funds*. Although volatility on the downside can be unsettling, keep in mind that missing out on stock market rallies could cause your portfolio to forfeit growth over the long term.

Rebalance Your Investment Mix As part of your risk assessment, review your mix of stock, bond, and cash investments. Many investors strive to

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

maintain a target mix that can help balance their exposure to risk and return. If you have not changed your investment mix since the beginning of the current bear market -- which started in October 2007 -- you may find that movements in the financial markets have caused your investment mix to drift significantly from your target allocation. It may be time to rebalance, which entails adding to positions that have declined in value and reducing your exposure to investments that exceed your target allocation. It may sound counterintuitive to add to positions that have gone down, but rebalancing provides a framework for buying when prices are low, which may enhance your chances of long-term returns.

Consider How Much You Need to Invest for Long Term Goals Many investors, especially those who plan to retire within a decade or less, have been affected by losses in their portfolios. If you are approaching retirement, you may need to reassess how much you need to invest on an annual basis, and how much longer you need to continue working, to replenish your retirement nest egg. You may need to undergo a similar analysis if you are investing for another goal, such as funding a college education. Your

financial advisor can help you identify tax-advantaged accounts for retirement and college savings.

Evaluate Both Growth and Income When Selecting Investments During the current bear market, many investors learned that capital appreciation cannot be taken for granted. You may want to make sure that your portfolio includes some investments that generate income. Examples may include dividendpaying stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that invest in them. When evaluating bonds or bond funds, remember to diversify according to sector and maturity. There are no guarantees in the world of investing, but these and other strategies may help you focus on the future and make a renewed commitment to longterm financial goals.
