COACHING STAFF John Weaver
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Appalachian State, 1971 28th year Coach John Weaver is in his 28th season as the director of the women’s track and cross country program and in his 14th season as the director of both the women’s and men’s programs at Appalachian State University. Weaver assumed the duties of directing both programs in the fall of 1995. A 1971 graduate of Appalachian in biology, Weaver returned to ASU in 1979 to assist the men’s program while earning a masters degree in biology. During his three-year tenure as the men’s assistant, he trained two NCAA qualifiers and seven Southern Conference champions. Weaver took over the full-time coaching duties for the women’s program in 1982. Since that time, the program, including cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, has produced two NCAA Division I National Champions in the 1500m , nine NCAA Division I all-Americans with 23 all-America performances, 18 NCAA Division I qualifiers, 252 Southern Conference individual- champions, 719 all-conference performances, 27 most outstanding honorees, 40 conference team championships, 25 conference Coachof-the-Year honors, 12 conference Freshman of the Year honors and two Southeast Region Coach of the Year honors. Weaver has also sent 49 athletes to Regional competition. After taking over the men’s program in 1995, the Mountaineers have produced two NCAA Division I all-Americans, four NCAA All-America performances, 11 Division I Qualifiers, 195 Southern Conference individual champions, 447 all-conference performances, nine conference MVP’s, 20 conference team championships, 10 coach-of-the-year honors, two conference freshman of the year and two Southeast Region Coach of the Year honors. ASU has also sent 40 athletes to Regional competition. Since regional competition began in 2003, a total of 40 men and 49 women athletes have qualified for the NCAA East Regionals, while eight have posted NCAA Championship qualifying performances.
In 2004, ASU had its first East Region champion, with Earnest Wiggins claiming a first place finish in the men’s 100 meter dash. Coach Weaver has also worked in athletics fundraising as the Yosef Club Director from 1982-1985 and taught classes in the education and physical education departments of the university. A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Weaver graduated from Seventy-First High School in 1967. He earned his bachelor of science degree in 1971 from Appalachian, returning to Fayetteville to teach biology and eventually take over the cross country and track programs at Douglas Byrd High School in 1972. His cross country dual meet record over eight years was an impressive 71-11 and his teams won six conference titles while competing in four state championships. His track team also produced multiple individual conference and regional champions, along with several state meet qualifiers. Currently, Weaver coaches the sprinters, hurdlers, multi-event athletes and relays, while overseeing all aspects of the program. He is also serving an appointment to the NCAA Division I Track and Cross Country Committee effective September of 2006 and active until September of 2010. Each summer, Weaver also directs the Grandfather Mountain Marathon, The Bear Road Race and two cross country team camps. Over 1,000 athletes attend camp at ASU each summer. He is married to the former Cynthia Harmon of Lenoir, N.C. and has two sons, Chase (22) a student at Appalachian and Jay (20) a member of the Appalachian cross country and track and field team.

COACHING STAFF Michael Curcio
Cross Country/Distance Coach - Recruiting Coordinator Appalachian State, 1987 15th year Michael Curcio is in his 15th year as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach, track and field distance coach and recruiting coordinator at Appalachian State University. Curcio’s men’s cross country teams have become a fixture atop the Southern Conference during his tenure, capturing nine Southern Conference titles in the past 13 years, winning those crowns in 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Since taking over the helm of the women’s cross country team in 2000, his teams have recorded four conference runner-up finishes and one SoCon title in 2004. In his 14 years, Curcio has coached two NCAA qualifiers, eight NCAA regional qualifiers, 12 USATF Junior National qualifiers and eight Southern Conference cross country Freshmen of the Year. In addition to those feats, Curcio has also coached 65 all-Southern Conference cross country performances and three Southern Conference cross country individual champions. While coaching the distance runners for ASU track and field, Curcio has coached 37 athletes to SoCon indoor and outdoor individual champion performances and 162 runners to all-conference indoor and outdoor performances. He has also coached two athletes to SoCon outdoor track and field MVP awards and one to a SoCon indoor track and field MVP award. Since arriving at ASU, he has helped the Mountaineers garner 14 indoor track and field championship titles and 15 outdoor track and field championship titles. While athletic excellence is important, Curcio and his teams also strive for success in academics. Since being at ASU, Curcio has coached two NCAA post-graduate scholarship award winners, one Southern Conference postgraduate scholarship award winner, two Brakefield award recipients, given to the ASU senior student-athlete with the highest GPA, and five USTFCCCA academic all-Americans.
In 2003, Curcio was named the USTCA Division I Men’s National Assistant Coach of the Year for Distance. He also has been recognized by the Southern Conference for his team’s impressive performances, being named the SoCon’s men’s cross country Coach of the Year eight times (1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009). Before coming to Appalachian, Curcio served as an assistant at Florida State from 1988-1992. In the spring of 1993, he became an assistant at South Florida, where he helped build a fledgling track and field program, along with a nationally-ranked cross country program. The track women at USF won three conference titles in the first four years of the program’s existence. The men’s and women’s cross country teams were ranked as high as 12th and 21st in nation during his tenure. Coach Curcio hails from Long Island, N.Y. where he attended Newfield High School before attending and competing for Appalachian State University. He was a three-time all-SoCon selection in track and still ranks fifth all-time in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:49.60. His 4x1500 meter relay team still holds the school record for that event.

April Smith

Throws Coach Doane College, 2000 Eighth Year April Smith is in her eighth year at Appalachian State University and is primarily responsible for the throws programs, along with the strength training of the track and field athletes. Since starting at Appalachian, Smith has coached 23 regional qualifiers, three national qualifiers in the shot put and one athlete that met an Olympic trial standard of 63-1 in June of 2007. She has also coached 48 conference champions and 98 all-SoCon performers in the shot put, discus, hammer, javelin and weight throw events. While at ASU, she has also been an integral part of the Mountaineers tradition of winning Southern Conference titles in both men’s and women’s track. For her efforts, Smith was named the NCAA Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007. Smith came to ASU in January of 2002 from Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., where she served as a graduate assistant. While at Chadron, she coached her first Division II all-American during her first year of coaching.
In addition to coaching experience, Smith also has 13 years of competition experience in the shot put, discus, javelin, hammer and weight throws. In college, she was a three-time NAIA National Champion and a nine-time all-American. She was also named the Nebraska State College Athlete of the Year and the Doane College Woman of the Year in 2000. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis on sports management and is completing a master’s degree through Chadron State. Prior to transferring from the University of Kansas to Doane College in 1998, Smith was a Big 12 Conference contender, a Jayhawk scholar-athlete and made the Big 12 conference commissioner’s honor roll. Her competition experience also extends internationally. She has competed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and trained under the direction of Yuriy Syedikh and Natalya Lisovskaya, the current world record holders in the men’s hammer throw and the women’s shot put. Smith is married to former ASU throws legend Bob Smith. They have a six- year-old son, Andrew, and a three-year-old son, Derek.

COACHING STAFF Damion McLean
Jumps/Sprints/Strength and Conditioning Appalachian State, 2002 8th year In his eighth year as ASU’s jump coach and strength and conditioning coordinator, Damion McLean brings a wealth of knowledge about Southern Conference track to his position. A 2002 graduate of Appalachian, McLean was a conference champion in the long jump in both indoor and outdoor track and qualified for the NCAA Championships. He holds third place on ASU’s outdoor all-time list in the long jump with a mark of 25-1 (personal best of 25-8). The 4x300m team on which McLean competed on holds the indoor record in that event. He also competed in the triple jump, high jump, 100m and on the 4 x 100 relay team while at Appalachian. In the past six years, McLean’s efforts have produced 31 SoCon champions, 84 all-conference performances, four SoCon MVPs, 20 regional standard performances, five NCAA competitors, three Olympic trial qualifiers and ASU record holders in the indoor long jump (Vonteena Knotts, 20-10.50 - 18th in the nation) and triple jump (Ronda White, 44-2 - 12th in the nation). In 2008, McLean coached the USATF Indoor Masters long jump champion, John Clifford. Clifford, won the event by a mark of 15-1, a quarter of an inch ahead of his competitor in the 65 & older division.
David Ward
Pole Vault Coach Appalachian State, 1979 Seventh year Coach David Ward is a 1979 graduate of Appalachian, where he was a six-time all-Southern Conference performer in the pole vault. While at ASU, he was the indoor and outdoor record holder, posting performances of 15-6’ indoor and 16-2’ outdooor as well as team MVP and team captain. Ward also attended Santa Fe Junior College, where he was a national finalist in the indoor and outdoor junior college national championships in 1976. He graduated from Olympic High School in Charlotte, N.C. in 1974 and was the conference, regional and state champion in the pole vault and set the North Carolina High School record of 15 feet. Coach Ward spent 11 years as a high school track, cross country and strength and conditioning coach. He has coached individual state champions in indoor and outdoor track, and cross country in addition to coaching conference, regional and state championship teams in cross country and conference championships teams in track. Ward has hosted National Strength and Conditioning Association (NCSA) Clinics, and has been a presenter at numerous track and field, strength training and physical education workshops and clinics. He has directed regional, state and open track meets, organized Charlotte Latin and Tailwind Track Clubs, served as a USA Certified Track Official at NCAA National Championship Meets and has earned USA Track and Field Level I Coaching Certification. He has also published articles related to strength and conditioning topics. After joining the track staff at Appalachian as a pole vault coach in the fall of 2003, Coach Ward has coached 11 Southern Conference champions, 20 Indoor all-Southern Conference performers, 23 outdoor all-Southern Conference performers, an indoor national finalist and an outdoor regional finalist. New indoor and outdoor ASU records were also established in the women’s vault in 2004. Ward is a physical education teacher and resides in Boone with his wife Dawn, a nurse at Watauga Medical Center. They have three daughters Joy, Jennifer and Julie. The Ward family is actively involved in community and school projects and direct a Christian ministry for students.

During his fifth season at ASU, McLean served as an undergrad assistant (sprints/hurdles & jumps) for the Mountaineers before graduating in May of 2002. He is a member of the USATF & USTFCCC Associations, holds a USATF Level 2 certification in the jumps and attended the Emerging Elite Coaches Clinic at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego, Calif. in the summer of 2008. The Lincolnton, N.C. native has a degree in communication and advertising with a minor in business. He has a daughter, Bryanna, 10. McLean continues competing on an individual basis and has qualified for USATF Championships as well as the 2008 Olympic Trials in the long jump. In 2008, he finished with the 12th best mark in the country before suffering an injury during the outdoor season.
Gary Murphy
High Jumps Coach Appalachian State, 1976 Third year Gary Murphy enters his third year of coaching at Appalachian State after spending 27 years in the public school system as both a teacher and coach. During his tenure at Watauga High School, his Pioneers were consistently among the top track and field programs in western North Carolina. His teams finished first five times and runner-up twice during his seven-year stint as head coach. Murphy also guided several athletes to individual championships on the prep level including April Cook, who was a state champion in the high jump and still holds the North Carolina 3A record at 5-8.75. Murphy was also honored as the Northwestern 4A Coach of the Year six times. Murphy’s coaching experience extends back to his graduate years at Appalachian. While at ASU, he was in charge of fall workouts and helped with recruiting and meet day administration. Last season, Murphy guided freshman Darius Purcell to runnerup finishes in the high jump at both the Southern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Purcell also qualified for the NCAA East Regionals and topped out at an impressive mark of 6-11, which ranks sixth in school history. Murphy is also a master’s level USATF official and has worked numerous NCAA Championships and USATF Championships. He also was an official at the 1996 Olympic Trials and Olympic Games in Atlanta and is the coordinator of officials for the Southern Conference Championships. Murphy was a high jumper for the Mountaineers during the early 70s. He still ranks in the top ten indoors with a 6-9 effort and posted personal best of 6-10.25. Murphy and his wife, Gay, reside in Boone and have three children. Their son, Patrick (27), was a track athlete at Charlotte, while daughter Megan, 25, was a volleyball player at UNC Asheville and Briana, 23, played soccer at Charleston Southern.

2 -- The Mountaineers swept both the Southern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships, marking the sixth time this decade they claimed both SoCon titles. 7 -- Appalachian accounted for five individual conference champions at the SoCon Outdoor Championships and two individual champions at the Indoor Meet. 52 -- Appalachian athletes earned all-conference accolades in the 2008-09 Track and Field Season. 5 -- Appalachian sent five athletes to compete at the NCAA Regional Championships. 1 -- Conference MVP -- Lily Tallent was named Most Outstanding Athlete after taking home conference titles in the javelin, shot put and discus.

2009-10 Women’s Preview 2009-10 has all the makings of another banner year for Appalachian State women’s track and field. With 15 athletes returning who earned all-conference accolades in 200809 including six conference championship performances, the Mountaineers will enter the season as heavy favorites to repeat as Southern Conference champions in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Apps pulled off a season sweep in 2008-09. Taking home conference championships at the SoCon Indoor Meet in February as well as the outdoor title in April. With a roster loaded with experienced veterans and a slew of talented newcomers, Appalachian will look to complete the season sweep for the seventh time this decade. Multis Junior Kiara Crutchfield is the top returning multi-event athlete after a standout season in 2008-09. The Greensboro native took home all-Socon honors after finishing second in the pentathlon at the SoCon Indoor Championship. Crutchfield followed up her indoor season with a third-place finish in the heptathlon at the SoCon Outdoor Championship. Throws Senior Whitney Smyre is expected to be among the top throwers in the Southern Conference after an outstanding season in 2008-09. The Stony Point, N.C. native took home league titles in both the shot put and the weight throw at the SoCon Indoor Championships. Smyre also took home a conference championship in the hammer throw at the SoCon Outdoor Championship, to go along with second and third place finishes in the shot put and discus. Junior Michaela McGriff returns after a strong ‘09 campaign as well. McGriff took home allconference honors with a third place finish in the weight throw at the Indoor meet in addition to a runner-up finish in the hammer throw at the Outdoor Championships in the spring. Jumps/Vaults Senior Danielle Thorpe headlines the jumpers and is perhaps the Mountaineers’ most versatile athlete. The Durham native took home the triple jump championship as well as a second-place finish in the long jump at the SoCon Indoor Championship. Thorpe also qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the triple jump. Junior Rebecca Hazeltine returns after an all-conference season in ‘09. Hazeltine placed third in the high jump at the SoCon Indoor Championships and qualified for the NCAA East Regional with a school record jump of 5-9.25.

Senior Julie Ward is the top returning vaulter for the 2009-10 season. The Watauga High product captured the SoCon Indoor pole vault title at the conference meet at Clemson in February, and followed up that performance with a third-place finish at the Outdoor Championships in the spring. Ward is joined by fellow senior Ashley Beale as one of the top returning vaulters in the SoCon. Beale took home all-conference honors in 2008-09 after a third-place finish at the SoCon Indoor Championships and a runnerup finish in the outdoor season. Sprints Senior Ashley McKiver headlines a deep and talented collection of sprinters for the Mountaineers this season. McKiver took home third-place in the 60m dash at the SoCon Indoor Championships and was a member of the second-place 4x100m relay team at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. Junior Michelle Brutus earned all-SoCon accolades in 2008-09 after claiming a third-place finish in the 60m hurdles at the SoCon Indoor Championships. The Ridge, N.Y, native also took home league accolades in the spring with a runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. Asia Dunlap, Nadia Liriano, Lynda Hiller and Christina Parker all return after earning allconference honors in ‘09 as members of Appalachian’s sprint relay teams. Each is expected to challenge for individual all-conference accolades in the 2009-10 season. Distance Hannah Parks returns for her senior season as the most experienced member of a talented group of distance runners. Parks earned second-team all-SoCon honors in cross country in 2008 after a 13th place finish at the SoCon Cross Country Championsips. The Kernersville, N.C. native was also a member of the second-place distance medley relay team at the SoCon Indoor Championships in 2009. Freshman Brittney Caudle will make a highly anticipated debut for the Mountaineer track program this season, and is expected to be among the top distance runners in the Southern Conference. Caudle took the league by storm during cross country season, taking home Runner of the Year honors after winning the SoCon title by over 20 seconds.
The indoor season kicks off in Boone December 5, as the Mountaineers will host the Appalachian Invitational at the Holmes Convocation Center. Following a month-long break over the Christmas holidays, the Apps will return to action January 8, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete in the UNC Opener before returning home the following weekend to host the Appalachian Open January 15. Appalachian will then hit the road two consecutive weekends, with trips to East Tennessee State for the Niswonger Invitational January 22-23 and Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty Invitational January 29-30. After a two-week hiatus, the Mountaineers will be back in action February 12-13 at the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, prior to returning home to host the Mountaineer Open February 18 in their final tune-up before the SoCon Championships at Clemson February 25-26. The outdoor season kicks off with consecutive trips into ACC country in late March. The Apps will travel to Winston Salem to take part in the Wake Forest Invitational March 19-20, and follow that up with a trip to NC State for the Raleigh Relays March 26-27. The Mountaineers begin the month of April with a trip to Wilmington for th annual Sea vs. Mountains meet, hosted by UNC Wilmington April 3. The Apps will be split up the following weekend, with athletes slated to participate at both the Sea Rays Invitational at Knoxville, Tenn. and the Winthrop Quad at Rock Hill, S.C. over the weekend of April 9-10. ASU will then return home for consecutive weekends to close out the regular season, hosting the Appalachian Invitational April 16 and the SoCon Championships April 24-25.

2009-10 Men’s Preview Appalachian State men’s Track and Field heads into the 2009-10 season with sights on adding some addititonal hardware to the trophy case at Owens Field House. With 22 athletes who earned all-Conference accolades in 2008-09, including 11 athletes who took home individual conference titles returning, the Mountaineers appear to be a favorite to capture Southern Conference championships in 2009-10. The Mountaineers nearly pulled off a season sweep of the Southern Conference in 2009. Appalachian took home the Indoor Championship at Clemson in February, but found themselves just a half-point short of champion Western Carolina at the Outdoor Championships. With a roster loaded with experienced veterans and a slew of talented newcomers, Appalachian’s men will look to complete the season sweep for the fourth time this decade. Multis Senior Matt Boruff heads a talented crew of multi-event athletes for the Mountaineers this year. The Raleigh, N.C. native won his second consecutive heptathlon title at the SoCon Indoor Championships last year, in the process scoring 5021 points to shatter his previous ASU and SoCon record. Junior Jake Goodchild is also one of the top returners in the SoCon. As a sophomore, Goodchild notched a third place finish in the heptathlon at the SoCon Indoor Championships, and took home the runner-up spot at the Outdoor Championships while setting a new school record with 6278 points. Throws A deep crop of throwers will be among the Mountaineers’ strengths in the 2009-10 season. Junior Malcolm Styers took home conference titles in the shot put and weight throw at last year’s Indoor Championships. The Newton, N.C. native also claimed runner-up honors in the hammer throw and third place finishes in the shot and discus at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. Junior Tim Daly took home the hammer throw title at the ‘09 SoCon Outdoor Championships and figures to be among the top throwers in the conference this season as well. Junior Jerod Gardner and sophomore Jared Stalling, who each took home all-SoCon honors last year will round out the group of throwers. Gardner won the shot put title and finished second in the discus at last season’s Outdoor Championship, while Stalling notched a third place finish in the shot put at the Indoor Championship.
Jumps/Vaults Sophomore Darius Purcell returns after a dynamic freshman season in the Black and Gold. The Fayetteville, N.C. took home second place in the high jump at both the SoCon Indoor and Outdoor Championships and qualified for the NCAA East Regionals with a jump of 6-11.5. Juniors Ryan Twiford and Mike Wilson are expected to be among the top pole vaulters in the conference in 2010. Twiford took home second place at the SoCon Indoor Championships in ‘09 while Wilson carded a third-place finish at the Outdoor Championships. Sprints Sophomore Dennis Moore headlines a talented group of Mountaineer sprinters in 2009-10. Moore was named SoCon Freshman of the Year in ‘09 after taking home second place in both the 60m dash and 200m dash at the Indoor Championships last year. Moore also anchored a 4x100 relay team that featured returners Philip Bush and DeSean Pearce that placed second at the SoCon Outdoor Championships last year. Senior John Svoboda will also challenge for a conference crown in the 400m after placing second in the event at both the Indoor and Outdoor Championships last year. Distance Perhaps no group on Appalachian’s roster can boast as much depth as Coach Mike Curcio’s distance runners. Sophomore Chris Moen took home a conference title in the mile run at last year’s Indoor Championships. Sophomore Sean Soderman took home first place at USATF Nationals and represented the USA in the Pan-Am Junior Games in Trinidad and Tobago, where he finished second. Classmate Mason Campbell took home third place in 3000m steeple chase at the SoCon Outdoor Championships and competed at the USATF Nationals with Soderman. Cross country standouts Phil Mitchell, Josh Houser and Bud Galloway will also be expected to challenge for all-SoCon honors in 2009-10.

Leigh Hawkins Throws
A member of the ASU track and field team from 1986-1989, Leigh Hawkins still ranks second in school history in the discus (170-6), third in the indoor shot put (52-5) and fourth in the outdoor shot put (54-2.5). Hawkins won 11 individual SoCon titles in the shot put, discus, weight and hammer throws during his four-year career. He was also named the SoCon Championship MVP three times. He claimed outdoor championships in the discus in 1986, ‘88 , and ‘89, shot put in 1988 and ‘89. Hawkins also added indoor titles in the shot put and weight throw in ‘88 and ‘89.

The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which enters its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, has become known as one of the nation’s leaders in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premier Division I-AA football conference since earning that classification in 1981. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes-Scholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s
historical documents. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Samford Western Carolina and Wofford. The most recent addition, Samford University, joined the Southern Conference in 2008. The SoCon also sponsors two all-sports awards, the Commissioner's Cup for men's programs and the Germann Cup for women's teams. In all, Appalachian has claimed 27 of the last 30 Commissioner's Cups along with each of the first six Germann Cups. In both 2005-06 and 2006-07, the Mountaineers swept the awards, winning both. John Iamarino became the comissioner of the Southern Conference on January 30, 2006. Iamarino came to the SoCon after nine years as commissioner of the Northeastern Conference. He replaced Dr. Danny Morrison, who left his post at the SoCon after four years to become the director of athletics at Texas Christian University.
Commissioner’s and Germann Cups For the fourth-straight year and 29th time in school history, Appalachian State won the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cup in 2008-09, awarded annually to the conference’s top all-around men’s sports program. On the strength of SoCon titles in football, cross country and indoor track and field, Appalachian compiled 87.5 points in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, easily out-distancing second-place Chattanooga (70.5) ASU men’s teams finished in second place or higher in 5-of-10 sports and sixth or better in 8-of-10, leading to the fourth-highest points total in the 40-year history of the all-sports competition. All 29 of Appalachian’s Commissioner’s Cup titles have come since 1977-78, giving it 29 of the past 32 allsports crowns overall. ASU’s 29 Commissioner’s Cups are by far the most in SoCon history -- William & Mary boasts the second-most at five, followed by East Carolina (four) and Chattanooga, East Tennessee State and Furman (one each). On the women’s side, ASU placed sixth in the Germann cup standings with 64.5 points, just 13.5 points behind champion College of Charleston in the hotly contested women’s race.

Appalachian State University Educating North Carolina’s Citizens and Leaders... Now in its 110th year, Appalachian State University is dedicated to creating the best possible learning environment for its students. The university promotes international experiences for students and faculty through study abroad and international programs. Appalachian encourages intellectual growth through the Freshman Seminar and Summer Reading Program and through undergraduate research coordinated by faculty. The university recruits and develops outstanding faculty committed to classroom instruction, research and service. It provides student leadership opportunities through involvement on university committees and the student government association or in one of the more than 200 clubs and organizations on campus. Appalachian also fosters a commitment to community service and outreach through volunteer activities coordinated throughout Watauga County and the region. Appalachian offers 95 undergraduate majors, 81 graduate degree programs and a doctorate in educational leadership. North Carolina residents make up 83 percent of the approximately 15,000-student body enrollment, including 13,000 on the main campus in Boone.
Nearly half of Appalachian students come from cities, towns and counties within a 100-mile radius of campus. The student body represents some 40 states and 50 countries. Appalachian is a distinctively residential campus, encompassing 340 acres. The 250-acre main campus includes 16 academic buildings, 17 residence halls, five dining facilities and several recreational facilities. The university also operates living-learning centers in Washington, D.C., and New York City. A high quality and diverse faculty and staff (17:1 student-faculty ratio) promotes small classes, student-faculty interaction and individual student attention. Appalachian ranked third among the South’s top public universities and 12th among public and private universities in the South in the 2002 “America’s Best Colleges Guide” published by U.S. News & World Report. Appalachian has placed among the top 15 southern comprehensive universities since the magazine’s rankings first appeared in 1986. Appalachian has educated more than 90,000 students during its 108-year-history. Three-fourths of the university’s 75,000 alumni reside in North Carolina. Appalachian State University is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system. The campus is located in Boone, N.C., in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Appalachian supports a broad-based athletics program, sponsoring 10 men’s and 10 women’s intercollegiate teams. The Mountaineers hold NCAA Division I status and have been members of the Southern Conference since 1971. Appalachian has received the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cup for overall excellence in men’s athletics 28 times since the award was established in 1970 and the Germann Cup, recognizing the top women’s program in the conference, six of the 16 years the award has been presented. Points of Pride • U.S. News & World Report’s 2008 America’s Best Colleges Guide placed Appalachian fifth among the South’s top public universities and 12th among public and private universities in the South. Appalachian has ranked in the top 15 among southern universities since the rankings first appeared in 1986. • Appalachian is one of 186 colleges in the nation considered a best value for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. The listing appears in the 2008 edition of “America’s Best Values in Colleges.” • Appalachian has been included in Consumers Digest magazine’s listing of the top 50 best values for public colleges and universities. The listing appeared in the May/June issue of the magazine. In the article “2007 College Road Map—Making the Right Choices,” the magazine ranks Appalachian 21st based on cost, quality of education offered, academic excellence of freshman enrollment, student-faculty ratio, graduation rates and the number of faculty members holding a Ph.D. or highest terminal degree in their field. These factors were weighed against out-of-state tuition. • Appalachian is included in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine’s “100 Best Values in Public Colleges.” In the February 2007 listing, Appalachian ranks 31st in terms of in-state costs. • Contributions to the Yosef Club for scholarships for student-athletics exceeded $1 million for the second-consecutive year in 2006-07. Contributions to the Appalachian State University Foundation exceeded $9.5 million through June 2007.
•The university’s operating revenues totaled $262,705,373 in fiscal year 2006. Of that amount, 38.7 percent came from state appropriations and 21.7 percent was generated by student tuition and fees. The university also receives operating revenues from its auxiliary services, such as Food Services and University Bookstore, and from grants and contracts, investment income and gifts. • Appalachian’s campus covers more than 1,320 acres and includes the 90-acre main campus, the 180-acre west campus, and several outlying properties such as Camp Broadstone. Together, the main campus and the west campus contain highrise residence halls, academic buildings, athletic and recreational facilities, libraries, a conference center, student apartments, auditoriums and research centers. • Of Appalachian’s 710 full-time instructional faculty in 2006, 47 percent were in the College of Arts and Sciences, 20 percent were in the College of Fine and Applied Arts, 15 percent were in the Reich College of Education, 13 percent were in the Walker College of Business, and 5 percent in the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music.
• The top five North Carolina counties represented by fall 2006 students were Wake (1,350), Mecklenburg (1,321), Watauga (1,033), Guilford (741), and Forsyth (708). Ninety-one percent (12,559) of the total on campus enrollment were North Carolina residents. Of the 1,322 students from states other than North Carolina, 64 percent came from five states: Georgia (18 percent), Virginia (15 percent), Florida (11 percent), South Carolina (10 percent) and Tennessee (10 percent). • Appalachian provides study abroad opportunities in more than 17 countries. • Faculty/student collaboration on research and creative endeavors is highly encouraged at the undergraduate level. A total of $11.1 million in research grants and contracts was awarded to the university in 2006-07. • The Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT) office at Appalachian provided an estimated $1.74 million of volunteer service to the community during the 2006-07 school year based on the national standard for volunteer time.
• Eight types of bachelor’s degrees with 98 undergraduate major programs are available at Appalachian. Eight types of master’s degrees with 45 programs are available at the graduate level. Additionally, Appalachian offers majors leading to an educational specialist degree, one major leading to a specialist in school psychology, and one major leading to a doctorate of education. The many achievements enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during the first 48 months of Cobb’s tenure include: - Three NCAA Division 1 football national championships -- marking the first time that any program has ever won three consecutive NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS -- formerly Division 1-AA) and the first NCAA football titles ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina at any level. - Shattering regular season attendance records at “The Rock” with a school record 28,227 fans per game piling into Kidd Brewer Stadium during the 2008 regular season -- more than 140 percent of the stadium’s ‘08 seating capacity of 16,650. - A 298 percent increase in football season-ticket sales since his arrival in 2005. - Four-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships -- recognizing the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference. - Two Germann Cup championships -- recognizing the top overall women’s sports program in the Southern Conference. - 35 percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25) - Five teams (men’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field) earning public recogni tion awards, based on being among the nations’s top 10 percent in their respective sports based on Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. - The Yosef Club, which provides scholarships for student-athletes, raising nearly $2.5 million in 2008-09 -- reaching the $2 million threshold for the second-straight year and up over $1.8 million from the year before Cobb’s arrival. - Appalachian’s athletics annual budget increasing from $7.5 million in Cobb’s first year to $11 million in 2009-10.
While Cobb is quick to point out the “total team effort” put forth to achieve the many successes that have been enjoyed since he began his tenure as ASU’s director of athletics on July 1, 2005, it is the experience, vision and work-ethic of the 41-year-old Cobb that has steered the Mountaineers to new heights. Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was a member of the athletics department at North Carolina State University from 1998-2005. A four-year football letterwinner at NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director for external operations for the seven years prior to his arrival in Boone. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations, and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees. During his tenure, NC State increased football season-ticket sales by 87 percent and men’s basketball season-ticket sales by 121 percent. The combined ticket revenues accounted for and annual increase of over 86 percent for Wolfpack athletics, generating more than $6 million for the department. In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s administrator for baseball and women’s soccer, tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for the southeast region of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. Cobb graduated with honors with a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A second-team all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship. After receiving post-graduate scholarships from both the ACC and NFL Charities, Cobb earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 1992.

In addition to the renovations to Appalachian’s most visible athletics facility, the campaign has also produced new homes for Mountaineer baseball (Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium), softball (Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium) and soccer (at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex), as well as the Apps’ firstever indoor practice facility (Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility) and renovations to Varsity Gym that have upgraded the facility to a premier practice and competetion venue for ASU basketball, indoor track and field, volleyball and wrestling.
