ASU ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to the high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institutional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing ASU is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of non-discrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.

School Heartland Community College Position Head Coach

Shae Wesley, who led Heartland Community College in Normal, Ill. to a national championship in just the program’s second year of existence was hired as the third head coach in Appalachian State University softball history on September 13, 2010. Most recently, Wesley served as the first head coach in Heartland C.C. history. In the program’s inaugural season in 2008, she led the Hawks to a 3211 record and a third-place showing at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II national tournament. The following year, she coached the Hawks to a 50-8 campaign that culminated with winning the NJCAA Division II national title. For her efforts, Wesley was named the 2009 NJCAA Coach of the Year, Midwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and Region 24 Coach of the Year, as well as heading a staff that was tabbed as the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association. In addition to the success on the field, Wesley’s 2009 title team ranked 11th nationally with a 3.38 cumulative grade point average. Ten of her players went on to play at four-year programs with seven joining the NCAA Division I ranks, including pitcher Hannah Dow, outfielder Michelle Gorzelle and and infielder McKenzie Phillips, who currently play at Appalachian. Wesley also played an integral role in the formation and growth of the entire athletics department at Heartland, as she was one of the first employees ever hired by the newly formed program in 2006. After compiling an 82-19 record (.812) in two seasons at the helm, Wesley stepped down after winning the 2009 national crown to focus solely on her position as Young Athletes Coordinator for the Illinois Special Olympics. In that role, she coordinated and facilitated training for more than 2,500 Young Athletes across central and southern Illinois. She has also served as player/coach of the Bloomington Lady Hearts, a National Softball Association Major AA team, from 2005-08 and a player and coach in the Hutt Valley softball program in New Zealand from 2002-03. Wesley played collegiately at Illinois State in 2001 and ‘02, earning second-team all-America recognition as a senior and all-Missouri Valley Conference honors both seasons. She began her college career at Illinois Central College, where she was named to the 2000 NJCAA national alltournament team before transferring to Illinois State. She graduated from ISU in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology (sociology minor).

and one senior with a junior behind the plate.” Boyd was second on the team in batting average with a .339 clip behind Rembielak, who had a .355 batting average in 52 games. Rembielak and Boyd saw action in all 52 games last season. The duo also led ASU in almost every offensive category last season. In those games, Rembielak had 61 hits and 36 runs scored, with those 61 hits being tied for second most in single-season school history. The Advance, N.C.-native drove in a career-best 15 runs and stole 19 bases, while leading the team with 19 multiple hit games, two of those were four-hit affairs.

Junior Megan Rembielak

Boyd caused havoc in the box and batted her way into the school career record for average with a .372 average. She led the Black and Gold offensive attack with eight homers, a .593 slugging percentage and a .518 on base percentage, categories that she holds the school record in. She also stole a career-best 18 bases. M. Phillips was third on the squad in batting average with a .329 mark in 52 starts. She ranked in the top five in runs scored (25), total bases (55), at bats (158), hits (52), RBIs (22) and stolen bases (21). Also competing for time in the infield will be sophomore Meghan Smith, senior Morgan Price and junior Lindsay Whitlock. Price and Whitlock are both recovering from injuries that put them out for the season and will be looked at to contribute in their respective areas this season.

The infield is the most veteran group of the team. This group of players is some of the most verbal players of the team and with the pitching being young, they will be essential in keeping things calm on the diamond for the Mountaineers. “We have a very veteran infield with three seniors and a junior starting,” remarked Wesley. “There is a lot of leadership that comes from our infield, which is needed because our pitching is a little younger with two sophomores and a junior

2011 Season Outlook

After turning the ship and achieving the first winning season in Appalachian State University softball program history with a 27-25 overall record and 11-12 Southern Conference record, the Mountaineers are adding a new piece to the resurgent program by naming Shae Wesley as the third head coach in program history. Although this is Wesley’s first year at ASU and to the Division I coaching level, Wesley is no stranger to coaching as she posted an 82-19 record in two seasons at Heartland Community College in Illinois, including a 50-8 mark in her final season at HCC. Helping Wesley in her first season at the helm is former ASU pitching standout Kayla Richardson, who was upgraded from student-assistant to assistant coach, and brings a plethora of experience and knowledge to the coaches’ box. Rounding out Wesley’s coaching staff is interim assistant coach Jaime Hall, who was an all-MCCC performer at Spring Arbor University. To help ease Wesley’s transition at the helm will be catcher and third baseman Katie Boyd, centerfielder Sarah Rappe and utility player Allie Cashion. She will also have the good fortune of returning six players who notched all-SoCon accolades last season. Juniors Michelle Lighton, Megan Rembielak, Boyd and Rappe all achieved second-team honors, while Cashion and sophomore pitcher Frannie Seader were named to the all-freshman squad. Wesley also has three former student-athletes on the team that contributed heavily to the Black and Gold last season and understand the system that Wesley will be putting in at Appalachian State. Seniors pitcher Hannah Dow, infielder McKenzie Phillips and redshirt junior Michelle Gorzelle all starred for Wesley at Heartland.

2011 Season Outlook

ASU’s outfield will be comprised mostly of sophomore Hayley Grabner, Gorzelle and Rappe. The outfield is not only filled with speed and maturity, the trio has power at the plate that will be needed for the Mountaineers, despite outscoring their opponents 209-170 last season. “We have a ton of speed in the outfield with Grabner, Gorzelle, Rappe and additionally with Cashion,” said Wesley. “Our outfield brings an unique mix of a lot of speed, but also a lot of power at the plate. Our outfield is very dangerous to anybody that puts any kind of loft on the ball. They are able to get under the ball and not only make the catch, but with the arm strength that they have they are able to cut down on the amount of runners and keep them at bay.” Grabner’s best game of the season came against Georgia Southern when she tallied three hits in the 5-4 victory for the Apps.

sophomores Louise Gibson and Seader and junior Caitlin Wainright will all be responsible for setting the defense in motion and controlling the tempo of the game.

Senior Hannah Dow

“Our pitchers have been working extremely hard in the offseason,” says Wesley. “We have four pitchers and they are a very strong core. They compliment each other and contrast each other when need be.” Wainright led the staff with a 12-8 record last season. She has a 2.00 earned run average, while striking out 90 in 31 appearances. Dow posted a 7-10 mark in 25 appearances, drawing the start in 22 of those games. In 107 innings of work, Dow struck out 84, while only allowing 29 free passes. When Dow is not on the mound, she will see time at first base. Seader recorded six wins against six losses in 27 appearances for ASU last season, striking out 65 batters in 89.1 innings of work en route to her all-freshman conference nod. After taking time to heal an injuried back, Gibson, who made four appearances last season, will also be looked at to get into the rotation for the Mountaineers. Lighton will be catching the majority of the balls behind the plate for the Apps this season, but look for Whitlock and Price to get into the mix as well. Lighton was second on the team in doubles with eight and drew the third-most walks on the team with 18 base on balls. The all-conference performer was also tied for second place on the team with 27 runs batted in. “Michelle Lighton is a fixture behind the plate, however we are very glad to have Lindsay Whitlock back and Morgan Price who we have been working in behind the plate,” noted Wesley.

Junior Michelle Gorzelle

Gorzelle ended the season sixth on the team with a .233 clip, while drawing the start in 51 of 52 games for ASU. Rappe led the Southern Conference for the second year in a row with 29 stolen bases. The mark is tied for third most in school history and 10th most in SoCon history. The Charlottenative hit a career-best mark of .293 and also had a career-high seven doubles and 11 RBI. Cashion set the freshman record for RBIs with 43 and came just short of the single-season record. Cashion was fifth on the team with a .280 average and fourth with 26 runs scored, while leading the team with 12 doubles. The Waxhaw-native amassed a team-leading 77 total bases and was second on the team in homeruns with seven. Also looking to get valuable minutes in the outfield is sophomore Sheridan Phillips.

Junior Michelle Lighton

Appalachian broke the single-season shutouts record with their eighth of the season, finished the season with the best ERA in school history at 2.46, easily surpassing last year’s record mark of 2.86.

• Sophomore shortstop Megan Rembielak led the team with a .355 average, 61 hits and set the school record with 12 sac bunts. She had 19 multi-hit games, and became just the second player in ASU history to record two four-hit games in one season (Glover the other). Southern Conference

The Southern Conference, which enters its 90th season of intercollegiate competition in 2010, has become known as one of the nations’s leaders in emphasizing the development of student-athletes and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premiere conference in the Football Championship Subdivision since earning that classification in 1981. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896) , the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athleties have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 RhodesScholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 untill 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. The SoCon also sponsors two all-sports awards, the Commissioner’s Cup for men’s programs and the Germann Cup for women’s teams. In 2010, Appalachian claimed its 30th Commissioner’s Cup since 1972 and has won the Germann Cup eight times in school history. Appalachian is the only SoCon program to win both cups in the same year, a feat it has accomplished seven times.

Administration

CHARLIE COBB

DEBBIE RICHARDSON

Athletics Director NC State, 1990 Fifth Year

Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Auburn, 1975 15th Year

I

n his first five years at Appalachian State University, director of athletics Charlie Cobb has led the department to unparalleled success.

The many achievements enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during the first 60 months of Cobb’s tenure include:

• • • • •

Three NCAA Division I football national championships — marking the first time that any program has ever won three-consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS — formerly Division I-AA) and the first NCAA football titles ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina at any level. Shattering football attendance records at Kidd Brewer Stadium with crowds surpassing “The Rock’s” permanent seating capacity for each of ASU’s 28 regular-season home games since Cobb’s arrival in 2005. A 298-percent increase in football season-ticket sales. Five-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships — recognizing the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference. Two Germann Cup championships — recognizing the top overall women’s sports program in the SoCon. Thirty-five percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25). Five teams (men’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field) earning public recognition awards, based on being among the nation’s top 10 percent in their respective sports based on Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The Yosef Club, which provides scholarship and facility support for studentathletes, raising over $2.5 million for the first time in 2009-10. Despite the state of the economy, the Yosef Club has reached the $2 million threshold for donations three years in a row and rasied nearly $2 million more in 2009-10 than it did in any year prior a string of five-straight record years since Cobb’s arrival. Appalachian’s athletics annual budget increasing from $7.5 million in Cobb’s first year to nearly $13 million in 2010-11.

Debbie Richardson begins her 15th year as Senior Woman Administrator at Appalachian State University. She joined the Mountaineer staff in August 1996 as an assistant athletics director and earned the title of senior associate director in 2006. Richardson serves as administrator for seven men’s and women’s sports, including volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, softball and men’s tennis. As the senior woman administrator, she acts as spokesperson for the needs and interests of women within the athletics department, campus and community. Richardson has been very active at conference, regional and national levels, participating on numerous committees. In the Southern Conference, Richardson sits on the wrestling and television committees and is the current chair of the volleyball committee. She is also a former chair of the conference’s Senior Woman Administrators’ Association. Regionally, Richardson serves as the chair of the south region volleyball ranking committee, and, at the national level, she is entering her second year as a member of the NCAA Division I volleyball committee. Richardson came to Appalachian following five years as assistant athletics director at the University of Illinois, where she was responsible for 11 sports, handling event management, athletic facilities and special projects, such as NCAA and Big Ten Championships. Prior to her stint at Illinois, Richardson spent nine years at the University of South Florida, including seven seasons as head volleyball coach. While at South Florida, Richardson compiled a 180117 record and earned three Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year awards (1984, 1986 and 1988). She led her team to four Sun Belt championships (1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989). Richardson came to South Florida from Gardner-Webb where she was a volleyball coach during the 1981 season. A 1975 Auburn graduate, Richardson was a four-year starter for the Tigers during the AIAWera. She served as a team captain and was named to the all-state team in both her junior and senior campaigns. The Miami, Fla. native graduated from Berry High School in Birmingham, Ala. An Olympic volleyball volunteer at the 1996 Atlanta Games, Richardson earned a master’s degree in physical education from East Tennessee State in 1977.

However, the most notable of Cobb’s many achievements has been the addition of first-class facilities that will give Appalachian the opportunity to be successful across the athletics spectrum for years to come. Facility enhancements totaling $50 million were completed in 2009, headlined by the 120,000square-foot Appalachian Athletics Center. The seven-story complex, located behind Kidd Brewer Stadium’s west stands, includes new football offices and locker room, a strength and conditioning center, training facilities, academic study space and computer lab for all ASU student-athletes, as well as premium seating in the form of 600 club-level seats and 18 luxury suites. The facility enhancements also included other significant renovations to The Rock. A new ticket plaza, which serves as a grand entrance to the stadium, as well as ornamental fencing that replaced the chain-link barriers that used to surround the stadium and field were completed before the 2007 season, while a 4,400-seat upper deck on the stadium’s east side and substantial upgrades to the east and south concourses were completed prior to the ‘08 campaign. In addition to the renovations to Appalachian’s most visible athletics facility, the campaign has also produced new homes for Mountaineer baseball (Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium), softball (Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium) and soccer (at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex), as well as the Apps’ first-ever indoor practice facility (Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility) and renovations to Varsity Gym that have upgraded the facility to a premier practice and competition venue for ASU basketball, indoor track and field, volleyball and wrestling. With the $50 million in facilities enhancements, all 20 of Appalachian’s intercollegiate sports teams now practice and compete in facilities that have either been built or renovated in the last decade. While Cobb is quick to point out the “total team effort” put forth to achieve the many successes that have been enjoyed since he began his tenure as ASU’s director of athletics on July 1, 2005, it is the experiRICK BEASLEY ence, vision and work ethic of the 42-year-old Cobb that has steered the Mountaineers to new heights. Sr. Assoc. AD, Athletic Develop. Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was a member of the athletics department at North Carolina State University from 1998-2005. A four-year football letterwinner at NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director for external operations for the seven years prior to his arrival in Boone. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees. During his tenure, NC State increased football season-ticket sales by 87 percent and men’s basketball season-ticket sales by 121 percent. The combined ticket revenues accounted for an annual increase of over 86 percent for Wolfpack athletics, generating more than $6 million for the department. In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s administrator for baseball and women’s soccer, tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for the southeast region of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. Prior to returning to his alma mater in ‘98, Cobb spent six years in Atlanta, Ga., where he held positions with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. As an assistant executive director for the Atlanta Sports Council and the Peach Bowl, he helped coordinate Atlanta’s bid for the 2002 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four and handled all game and event operations for the Peach Bowl. As sales manager for the Georgia Dome from 1994-97, Cobb helped procure events such as the Southeastern Conference football championship, the SEC and Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball tournaments, NCAA men’s basketball championship events, Georgia High School Association football playoffs, major concerts and other college and amateur sporting events. Cobb graduated with honors with a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A secondteam all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum Award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship. After receiving post-graduate scholarships from both the ACC and NFL Charities, Cobb earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992. Cobb is married to the former Lindsay Brecher, who was an all-ACC goalkeeper for NCSU women’s soccer from 1988-90 and serves as an assistant coach for Appalachian’s women’s soccer program. The Cobbs have a 12-year-old son, Harrison, and a nine-year-old daughter, Branan.
